Injury worries for Durham despite draw

Durham’s relief at escaping with a draw from a match in which they were largely outplayed was tempered by news that the injury crisis that has undermined the champions in their second title defence may become deeper still.

ScorecardDale Benkenstein injured his knee while fielding on the second day to compound Durham’s worries•Getty ImagesDurham’s relief at escaping with a draw from a match in which they were largely outplayed was tempered by news that the injury crisis that has undermined the champions in their second title defence may become deeper still.Already without Stephen Harmison, Graham Onions, Mitch Claydon and Callum Thorp, who between them took 148 championship wickets in 2009, Durham now face losing Liam Plunkett, who was responsible for another 49.But their problems do not begin and end with injured bowlers.Opening batsman Michael Di Venuto, top scorer with 1601 runs last season, could not build on his overnight unbeaten century when play resumed on the last day here because of strained intercostal muscles.Meanwhile it was revealed that Dale Benkenstein, who batted on Thursday in defiance of a knee injury sustained while fielding on Wednesday, has a detached patella tendon. The former captain was Durham’s second most productive batsman last summer, with 1155 runs.Neither would have batted yesterday except in an emergency and while expectations are that a week’s rest should be enough for Di Venuto, obliging him to sit out only the match against Durham UCCE, Benkenstein’s prognosis is less clear.More will be known about Plunkett’s prospects once he has undergone a scan on strained ribs. “He has had a similar injury twice before and each time he was out for six weeks,” Durham’s director of cricket, Geoff Cook, said. “We hope we can nip it in the bud this time.”It looks like a stress injury. He has carried a tremendous workload recently and was virtually a one-man attack in the last game against Hampshire. Of course he has had to bowl a lot of overs again here.”Durham have recalled Luke Evans from his loan to Northamptonshire and are hopeful, at least, that Harmison and Claydon might be fit to face Nottinghamshire in Durham’s next Championship action on May 10.Thorp, however, faces a longer spell on the sidelines with a hip injury while Onions, who has not played since dropping out of England’s tour to Bangladesh with a back problem, has had another setback in his recovery, needing another injection after suffering more pain.In the circumstances, Cook was clinging on to any positives he could detect after rain at tea consigned this match to a draw.Durham, who had been four down for 215 overnight, were obliged to follow on for the second time this season, bowled out for 330 in the absence of Di Venuto. They were 46 without loss when the match was abandoned, having sent in their young legspinner, Scott Borthwick, as emergency opener after finishing the first innings unbeaten on 20.Given that neither Di Venuto nor Benkenstein would have batted except in emergency, whether Durham would have survived another session was a matter for debate.Yorkshire’s two spinners, Adil Rashid and David Wainwright, had not found the help they had been promised from a pitch that remained turgidly solid throughout but there was a clear threat from Tino Best, who showed some versatility to take four of the five wickets to fall. The West Indian, renowned for hitting the deck hard and using his pace off the pitch, worked out quickly that he needed to bowl a fuller length and look to swing the ball and it paid off in a way that excited his teammates. He dismissed two batsmen in the space of three deliveries, Ian Blackwell playing on before Phil Mustard edged a catch to the wicketkeeper, swing doing the damage each time. He found late away movement to account for Ben Stokes and ended by flattening Chris Rushworth’s stumps for figures of 4-86 from his debut bowl.Best had a smile on his face afterwards, insisting he had been happy despite being presented with such an unhelpful surface.”Friday is surfing day in Barbados but I’d rather be here playing cricket at this lovely ground,” he said. “I thank God every day for giving me the talent to play cricket and I thank God for blessing Martin (Moxon) with the insight to sign me for Yorkshire.”It is a privilege to have the chance to play in county cricket and if there were two counties I could have chosen they would have been Surrey because my grandparents are English and are Surrey fans.”I play to work hard and earn everybody’s respect here and I hope that two or three years down the line I can still be playing for Yorkshire.”Yorkshire, certainly, hope to keep him beyond their original aim of using Best merely as a stop-gap before Australia’s Ryan Harris became available.”Tino has impressed me and with there being a doubt now about whether Ryan will be allowed to join us after being picked for Australia’s Twenty20 squad we are looking at keeping him for longer,” Yorkshire’s director of cricket, Martin Moxon, said.

Spurs make contact regarding de Vrij deal

Tottenham Hotspur are interested in a deal to bring Stefan de Vrij to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to a report by Italian media outlet FcInterNews.it, who claim that all three of Spurs, Newcastle United and Barcelona have contacted Mino Raiola – the agent of the Inter Milan defender – regarding the possibility of a move for the centre-back.

It is claimed that, while the Serie A side are hoping to extend the 29-year-old’s current deal until the summer of 2025, the club’s current financial difficulties are proving to be a stumbling block in bumping the Netherlands international’s wages up to the proposed €4.5m-per-year (£3.8m-per-year).

The report then goes on to state any potential move by Antonio Conte’s side would not come in the January transfer window, but rather in the summer, when, with just one year remaining on his current deal, Inter may well decide to cash in on De Vrij.

Better than De Ligt

Considering just how important a part of Conte’s Scudetto-winning Inter side De Vrij was last season, it is easy to understand why the Italian manager is so eager to secure a deal that would see the centre-back follow his own path to North London.

Indeed, over his 32 Serie A appearances last term, the £40.5m-rated defender helped his side keep 11 clean sheets, scored one goal and created one big chance for his teammates, as well as making an average of 1.3 interceptions, 0.9 tackles, 57.4 passes and winning 60% of his duels per game.

These returns saw the player who Kees Kwakman dubbed “one of the best defenders in the world” earn an extremely impressive seasonal SofaScore match rating of 7.03 – ranking him as Conte’s 10th-best player in the top flight of Italian football last time out.

Furthermore, Kwakman also stated his belief that De Vrij is “more stable” in the heart of a defence than another of Tottenham’s reported transfer targets, Matthijs de Ligt – not to mention one who, considering Inter’s reported willingness to cash in on the 29-year-old, would more than likely a much cheaper option for Fabio Paratici to pursue.

As such, it would appear as if the £116k-per-week defender would be a better fit all round for Tottenham in comparison to the Juventus youngster, although, whether or not Conte is willing to wait until next summer in order to bring in a fresh face in the position is another matter altogether.

We don't know how to finish them off – Gayle

Chris Gayle, the West Indies captain, has said his team didn’t know how to “finish them off” after losing the fifth ODI to South Africa during a tense finish in Trinidad

Cricinfo staff04-Jun-2010Chris Gayle, the West Indies captain, has said his team didn’t know how to “finish them off” after losing the fifth ODI to South Africa during a tense finish in Trinidad. West Indies had South Africa at 246 for 9, chasing 253, and eventually lost with two balls to spare, consigning them to their second 5-0 whitewash at home against Graeme Smith’s team.”The game came close again, and we fell short again,’ Gayle told reporters after the match. “We don’t know how to finish them off. Losing has become a habit, but we have to put that behind us and look forward to the Test series.”The one-wicket defeat on Thursday followed a loss off the last ball in the fourth game in Dominica. “I think our team needs to learn from South Africa. They are a top team and we came close to victory against them many times this series. When you look at their performances, we can take something from their approach to the game and put it into our game.”Though they lost all seven games in the series so far, West Indies, according to Gayle, could take some encouragement from knowing South Africa “are beatable” as the teams prepare for the three-Test series. “We came close, and we fell short, but one positive we can take away is that we know they are beatable,” he said. “We just hope that we can change things around for the Tests. We can beat them, we have done it once in South Africa, so there is no reason we can’t beat them at home.”Gayle received mixed reactions from the Port-of-Spain crowd after the game and was booed by some and cheered by others. He wasn’t too fussed about it, saying it had “happened in the past in Trinidad and Tobago”.

Ornstein drops Coutinho to Villa update

With on-loan defender Axel Tuanzebe leaving Aston Villa for a different loan spell away from his parent club Manchester United, this time to Napoli – as well as reports claiming that Wesley will be joining Brazilian club Internacional on a temporary basis until the end of the season after his loan spell with Club Brugge earlier in the campaign – Villa seem to have been more focused on getting players out of the club rather than bringing new ones in this month.

However, it seems as though the Midlands club could be set to welcome their first new face of the 2022 January transfer window imminently, which will surely excite a lot of fans.

What’s the latest?

According to a recent report from The Athletic by journalists David Ornstein and Gregg Evans which was shared on Ornstein’s official Twitter profile, Barcelona star Philippe Coutinho is set to join Villa on a six-month loan deal after a number of Premier League clubs were apparently interested in signing him.

The report also claimed that the opportunity to play under Steven Gerrard was the key factor in the 29-year-old’s decision to return to the Premier League.

The move has now been confirmed by Villa’s official club website, which stated that “the agreement, which is subject to the player completing a medical and receiving a work permit, also includes an option to buy and Philippe will travel to Birmingham in the next 48 hours.”

During his time with Liverpool, Coutinho made 152 appearances in the Premier League, scoring 41 goals and providing 37 assists in the process, with 81 of those games seeing him play alongside Gerrard, who recently labelled the Brazilian a “serial winner” and a “special footballer”.

Even though Coutinho has only scored 25 goals and provide 14 assists in 106 appearances for Barcelona since he made his big-money move to the La Liga club back in January 2018, it is still an exciting piece of business for Villa and their fans to see Coutinho playing under his former teammate for the remainder of the season.

Moving forward, if Coutinho can hit the ground running at Villa and Gerrard can get the best out of his former Reds team-mate in terms of goals, assists and solid performances, this could be just what the Midlanders need in order to get consistent results under their belt after winning four and losing four of their eight Premier League games since the 41-year-old took over in November.

Man United fans react to Haidara report

‘There is now an open dialogue’ between Manchester United and RB Leipzig regarding Amadou Haidara, according to journalist Jonathan Shrager.

He tweeted: “Whilst talks are in preliminary stages, I am told that there is now an open dialogue between #MUFC and RB Leipzig regarding Amadou Haidara”.

Predominantly a central midfielder but also able to play a more defensive role, Haidara has started 10 Bundesliga games for Leipzig so far this season (via WhoScored).

According to FBRef, he is similar stylistically to Chelsea’s N’Golo Kante, Leicester City’s Youri Tielemans and Borussia Dortmund’s Jude Bellingham.

United have transfer advantage, but could AFCON cause a problem?

Significantly, while Newcastle are also said to be interested, SPORT 1’s chief reporter Patrick Berger points out that Haidara’s ‘favourite club as a kid’ was Manchester United.

The 23-year-old is currently away with Mali at the Africa Cup of Nations, and it’s unclear if that would prove to be an obstacle towards signing him in this month’s transfer window. He has three-and-a-half years left to run on his contract at Leipzig and is valued at £21.6m by Transfermarkt.

Fan feed Utd Report relayed Shrager’s update, and here’s what some supporters made of it, with one fan believing that Haidara would be a significant upgrade on the much-maligned midfield duo of Scott McTominay and Fred.

Rain washes away Roses clash

The weather was the only winner at Headingley where the Roses match ended in a rain-soaked draw after both side’s had anxiously hoped for any sort of play

01-Jun-2010
ScorecardThe weather was the only winner at Headingley where the Roses match ended in a rain-soaked draw after both side’s had anxiously hoped for any sort of play.Yorkshire had closed the third day of the County Championship game on 199 for 8 in 63 overs, which meant they required just one more run for a solitary batting bonus point while Lancashire needed one more wicket to pick up a third bowling point.Neither captain was keen to call it a day but with no improvement in sight at four o’clock umpires Barry Dudleston and Nigel Cowley decided the ground could not dry out in time even if the rain stopped.Had a start been made then a further point would have given Yorkshire a clear lead at the top of the First Division table, but they are now second to Nottinghamshire who are level on points but have more wins. With the first day of the match also falling foul of the weather, it became the first time in two seasons that Yorkshire had suffered two blank days in a Championship fixture. Both Yorkshire and Lancashire are now poised to begin their Twenty20 programme and will not resume Championship cricket until they meet in the Roses match at Old Trafford on June 28.

Afridi wants Pakistan to replicate T20 form in Tests

Pakistan captain Shahid Afridi has rallied his players to carry forward their consistency in the Twenty20s against Australia to the two-Test series that begins at Lord’s on July 13

Cricinfo staff08-Jul-2010Pakistan captain Shahid Afridi has rallied his players to carry forward their consistency in the Twenty20s against Australia to the two-Test series that begins at Lord’s on July 13. After getting hammered by Australia in all formats of the game earlier this year and in the World Twenty20 in the Caribbean, Pakistan hit back by winning both the Twenty20s at Edgbaston to get their England tour off to a resounding start.”I think now that we have regained our winning habit we must work harder to maintain it and make winning a habit,” Afridi told a Pakistani sports channel. “I knew sooner or later we will win back-to-back matches because we have been performing well since the Twenty20 World Cup but missed out in close matches.”Twenty20 cricket has suited Pakistan both technically and temperamentally and their crowning moment was the World Twenty20 title win in 2009 in England. However, their form in Tests hasn’t been up to the mark, having been beaten 3-0 by Australia away, and drawing a three-Test series in New Zealand 1-1 before that. Afridi, whose leadership has won himself admirers, is determined to reverse that trend in the longer format.”There is a difference and we have to be aware of this,” Afridi said. “But the good thing is that a win is a win in any form of the game and this series win should serve a confidence booster for us ahead of the Tests.”The coach Waqar Younis agreed that the team can take a lot of confidence into the Test series. “I think these two wins are really going to help us to get into the momentum,” Waqar said. “Test matches are a different ball game fair enough, but with victory behind you it always helps.”With senior players Mohammad Yousuf and Younis Khan missing the tour despite their bans being lifted by the PCB, Afridi threw his weight behind the younger players to fill the gap. Yousuf hasn’t yet come out of retirement while Younis was left out due to disciplinary reasons.”Obviously we will miss their experience. I wanted them in the team for this tour and I tried my best to see they were in the team but for different reasons this couldn’t happen and it is unfortunate,” Afridi said. “But one has to manage with the available resources so right now I am focusing completely on the team I have, on the new players because they are the ones who will fight for Pakistan in the Test matches and I retain confidence they can do this.”

Sunderland fans slam Flanagan vs Lincoln

Many Sunderland fans have been left slamming the display of Tom Flanagan in their 3-1 loss at home to Lincoln City in League One on Tuesday night.

It was a miserable night for the Black Cats, which was capped off by Lee Johnson getting himself sent off at the end of the game after a scuffle broke out between both teams.

Chris Maguire haunted his former side with a hat-trick at the Stadium of Light, as Flanagan and the rest of the backline simply did not defend well enough to keep him at bay.

The SAFC captain was especially guilty of a lacklustre performance, losing out on six of his duels in total, while he was also guilty of giving the ball away on no fewer than on 18 separate occasions in the match, the joint-second most out of his teammates (SofaScore).

He could have especially defended better in the build-up to Maguire’s second goal, which he scored from the penalty spot after teammate Carl Winchester was sent off, which pretty much summed up how things went for the central defender.

These Sunderland supporters slammed his display on Twitter, with one even going as far as to claim that he is a ‘liability’:

NUFC set for talks over Bissouma deal

An update has emerged on Newcastle United and their pursuit of Mali international Yves Bissouma…

What’s the talk?

According to the Daily Mail, the Magpies are set to hold talks with Brighton over a deal for the midfield gem as they look to bolster Eddie Howe’s options in the middle of the park.

The report claims that the Seagulls want £50m for him, which is causing fellow Premier League side Aston Villa to stumble in their efforts to land him.

St. James’ rocking

Newcastle could get St. James’ Park rocking by sealing a £50m deal for Bissouma this month as it would be a gigantic sign of intent from PIF to show that they mean business.

Bringing Kieran Trippier back to England from Atletico was a fantastic first start, but the 31-year-old may not have had many more chances to get back to the Premier League. Snatching Chris Wood from a relegation rival was also a shrewd piece of business by the Magpies, weakening Burnley and potentially strengthening their own side.

However, Bissouma is different as he is heading towards the peak years of his career at 25 and is currently at a team who are a whopping 15 points ahead of Newcastle in the table.

This means that he would be downgrading significantly in the short-term in regards to the respective positions of the two sides during the best years of his career, which would show how much of a pull PIF can make the club.

Dale Stephens previously heaped praise on the midfielder and tipped him to improve in the future, saying:

“He’s got bundles of ability. He’s still a young boy and is still learning but I’m sure he’ll be a massive asset for this football club.

“He’s got the ability of perhaps a winger playing in central midfield with the way he can go past players. His feet are incredible and I’m sure he’s going to get better and better. He’s got everything you need to be a top player. It’s all about getting experience and minutes and I’m sure he’ll get that here.”

In the Premier League this season, the midfielder – once dubbed “top-class” by Ray Parlour – has averaged a superb SofaScore rating of 7.21. He has won 64% of his individual duels whilst making a whopping 5.5 tackles and interceptions per game in the division. This shows the level of quality the beast could bring to the Newcastle team and that is another reason why St. James’ could start rocking with his arrival at the club. Therefore, the club must work hard to get a deal over the line to bring him to Tyneside before the end of the month.

Elbow forces Ryder out of Sri Lanka trip

Jesse Ryder’s disrupted year has continued after a nagging elbow injury ruled him out of New Zealand’s tour of Sri Lanka

Cricinfo staff21-Jul-2010Jesse Ryder’s disrupted year has continued after a nagging elbow injury ruled him out of New Zealand’s tour of Sri Lanka next month. Ryder, 25, spent most of last summer fighting a serious groin problem and only returned for the World Twenty20 in the West Indies. He entered that tournament with hurt ligaments in his elbow and batted five times for 93 runs. Ryder eventually succumbed to the pain, which is particularly bad when he throws, missed the Twenty20s against Sri Lanka in May and has failed to recover during his time off.”Due to the compressed nature of the tour and his speed of recovery so far we feel we have insufficient time to get Jesse fully fit and able to take part in any of the one-day matches,” the coach and selector Mark Greatbatch said. “Therefore we have made the decision to keep Jesse in New Zealand where he will continue his rehabilitation from the elbow injury and return to playing as soon as possible.”A replacement will be named for the tri-series tournament that also involves India. New Zealand will be captained by Ross Taylor at the event, with Daniel Vettori and Brendon McCullum both on paternity leave.Greatbatch said it would be a huge achievement if New Zealand won the tri-series. “The team is a relatively young side without Daniel Vettori and Brendon McCullum but it gives other players an opportunity to express their natural talent on the international stage,” he said. “We’re building towards the first one-day international and are confident we will be ready when it really matters.”The squad departs for Sri Lanka on August 1 and the first match is against India on August 10. This week the players travel to Australia for three 50-over practice games against Maharashtra in Darwin to acclimatise.
