Liverpool should act now to secure £30m signing of Ajax star: Opinion

Liverpool will be hoping to keep improving following a massively successful season which saw them claim the Champions League again.

The Reds were superb throughout the campaign, and but for some incredible form from Man City, would be the proud owners of the Premier League title too as it stands.

However, it was not quite meant to be for Klopp’s men, and that in itself is enough for the club to consider bringing in one or two new faces which can impact the squad and ensure that they can achieve multiple trophies in each season.

This weekend then has seen the club linked with a move for Ajax star Hakim Ziyech, and we here in the Tavern can’t help but feel this would be a superb signing for the club.

Ziyech was instrumental as Ajax made it to the Champions League semi-finals this year, and his overall showings, coupled with his goals and assist numbers marked him out as one of the finer young talents on the continent.

With talk of the Dutch side only looking to bring in some £30m for Ziyech, it would be silly of Liverpool to not make their move if there is a genuine interest in the player.

While Mo Salah and Sadio Mane do of course occupy the positions the Ajax man plays in mainly, you can never have enough attacking options, and we saw at title winners Man City that this can often prove the difference between success and failure.

Liverpool cannot afford to start becoming over-reliant on the likes of Salah and Mane, and if they can move to bring in a player of Ziyech’s quality and potential, then it can only be a positive thing for the club going forward.

Spurs fans unhappy with potential Rabiot signing

[ad_pod ]

Tottenham Hotspur remain in the running to sign Adrien Rabiot from PSG this summer, per France Football via Sport Witness, to the bemusement of fans.

The midfielder is out of contract at the end of this month and will be available to sign on a free transfer from July 1.

As a result, he needs to make a decision on his future and the report claims that both Spurs and Manchester United have expressed an interest in signing the 24-year-old.

The France international may well be a little rusty, having made just 20 appearances in all competitions for PSG in 2018/19.

Rabiot was left out of the squad for 22 Ligue 1 games between December and May and it remains to be seen if he will be playing in the Premier League next season.

Liverpool fans have their say on how much Alexander-Arnold is worth

[ad_pod ]

Liverpool fans on Twitter have been discussing how much Trent Alexander-Arnold is worth as Aaron Wan-Bissaka’s £50m move to Manchester United looks set to be completed.

Trent was the third-highest assister in the Premier League last season, breaking the record for number of goals set up by a defender.

Aged just 20, Alexander-Arnold is certainly one of the best right-backs on the planet at the moment, and there is no reason why he can’t continue that for the next decade.

With extraordinary transfer fees being paid for full-backs nowadays, Reds supporters were asked how much it would take to prise the youngster from Anfield.

The response was overwhelming. Almost every fan wanted a nine-figure fee for their star, with many stating that a bid of around £150m would be enough.

As a local lad it is hard to see Alexander-Arnold leaving Jurgen Klopp’s side anytime soon, but if he does Liverpool fans will certainly be expecting him to fetch a hefty fee.

Spurs fans excited over possible Olmo deal

[ad_pod ]

Tottenham Hotspur fans have been left excited at the prospect of signing Dani Olmo from Dinamo Zagreb.

A Mundo Deportivo report claims that Spurs have tabled a €25m (£22.4m) bid for the Spain Under-21 international, who helped his country to glory in the European Under-21 Championships this summer.

The report claims that Spurs have already entered into talks with Dinamo and the player’s representatives, with the deal likely to go through in this transfer window.

Olmo, of course, is something of an unknown quantity, but he has made over 100 appearances for Dinamo at the age of 21.

Spurs have already signed Tanguy Ndombele from Lyon and Jack Clarke from Leeds United in this transfer window; the club broke their transfer record to sign the former and have loaned the latter back to the Championship club.

And fans are giddy at the thought of making a third signing in this transfer window, having gone two without making a single acquisition.

Southampton: Mario Lemina tells club he wants to quit this summer

Mario Lemina could be heading for the Southampton exit door this summer after admitting it might be time for a new challenge.

Lemina, who joined the Saints from Juventus back in 2017, missed a lot of last season due to injury and has since told the club he wants to start afresh elsewhere.

“The last four months have not been easy for me, with my injury. The coach put his team together. I want to start afresh. So why not leave?,” the 25-year-old was quoted as saying by the Daily Mirror.

“We have very good discussions with the club. We are in agreement. If I don’t feel good in this project, I can leave. They are giving me the opportunity to be able to go elsewhere.”

Lemina did not always feature last season due to that abdominal injury he picked up but, when he did play, his impact could arguably be felt.

With 1.1 dribbles per game in the Premier League, only Nathan Redmond averaged more in Ralph Hasenhuttl’s squad, while his 86% pass success rate was better than what any other active Southampton midfielder averaged (as per WhoScored).

Bearing that in mind, should Lemina depart St. Mary’s this summer, it could mean even more responsibility for another midfield man in Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg.

Last season, the 23-year-old was handed the captaincy by Hasenhuttl, something he spoke about with the Daily Echo in May, and could now be expected to carry out some of the tasks Lemina does whenever he is in the team.

For example, ball carrying. With 0.7 dribbles per game, Hojbjerg was the second best regular midfielder behind Lemina when it came to dribbling. Hasenhuttl will surely be expecting the Denmark international to help the team transition by collecting the ball and trying to drive through the midfield with it in a post-Lemina era if that is anything to go by.

At 82.9%, Hojbjerg also had the second highest pass success rate out of Southampton’s current crop of midfielders, with only Lemina averaging more at 86%. Like with dribbling, there could easily be more of an emphasis on Hojbjerg when it comes to someone needing to retain possession, with the previous pointing towards the former Bayern Munich player being that man.

Lemina leaves and Hojbjerg could find himself taking on even more responsibility at St. Mary’s.

Southampton fans, will Lemina leave this window? And if he does, what does it mean for Hojbjerg and co? Let us know your thoughts in the comment section below!

Celtic midfielder Olivier Ntcham is "looking to move on", says Jackie McNamara

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Pundit View series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent quotes from journalists, pundits, players and managers…

Celtic’s Olivier Ntcham has been criticised by Jackie McNamara for his outspoken comments last week, as reported by website Football Insider.

What’s he said?

The Hoops midfielder spoke to French newspaper L’Equipe about his current situation at Celtic Park, criticising the standard of opposition and lamenting the fact he could not join Porto last summer.

They were comments that attracted the ire of manager Neil Lennon, who will deal with the situation when the Frenchman returns to the club’s training base at Lennoxtown.

McNamara thinks he is simply working his ticket out of the club but has criticised the player for being disrespectful to his employers and Scottish football.

How can Celtic improve next season? A Hoops fan tells us how in the video below…

As quoted by Football Insider, the former Celtic captain said:

“I think his comments are disappointing, Neil Lennon’s said that as well. It’s disrespectful for the club and the league.

“It’s given him the opportunity and the platform to play and, especially last season, he wasn’t really strong in his performances. If it was that inferior then he should be standing out more, which he didn’t.

“Obviously the lad’s just looking to move on there. It’s a strange one, is he disruptive when he’s playing? The most important thing is whether he is contributing to the team. If they’re doing it on the pitch they can say what they want, do what they want at certain times.”

How should Lennon handle Ntcham?

With this spat taking place so publicly, the expectation will now be that it is all dealt with internally and privately.

Lennon had his say in public, letting fans know that the player’s behaviour was out of order, so there’s no use letting it all drag along in the open.

With the midfielder’s contract not expiring until 2023, Celtic should hold firm in the face of any low-ball offers from clubs looking to capitalise on the situation.

The best case scenario here is that the air is cleared and Ntcham is either sold for his true market value or keeps his head down and gets on with the task of helping deliver trophies for the club.

It’s not the first time a footballer has made outlandish comments while away on international duty and in this case there’s no need for it to critically impact the relationship between Ntcham and Celtic.

Celtic fans hail Marian Shved as Ukrainian scores on debut

[ad_pod ]

Marian Shved capped his Celtic debut with a goal as the Ukraine international struck in the latter stages of Tuesday’s 2-0 win over Nomme Kalju.

The 22-year-old actually joined Celtic in January, but stayed on loan with Karpaty Lviv for the remainder of the 2018-19 campaign.

Shved has now linked up with the Scottish giants, though, and was on the scoresheet in the two-goal success in Estonia.

The Hoops recorded a 7-0 aggregate victory over Nomme Kalju and will now take on Romanian outfit Cluj in the Champions League third qualifying round.

After Tuesday’s match, Shved, who made his Ukraine debut last November, gave an interview which was published on Celtic’s official Twitter account.

And that led to a number of the Scottish side’s supporters lavishing praise on the winger, with many tipping him to make a big impression during the 2019-20 campaign.

Newcastle fans react as Emil Krafth reportedly set to become fourth signing

[ad_pod ]

Newcastle are reportedly set to secure a deal for Sweden international Emil Krafth, and fans are excited about the signing.

The Magpies hadn’t had a lot to shout about this summer, but the last few weeks have seen three new faces arrive on Tyneside.

The club smashed their transfer record on Joelinton to kick things off, and last week brought a double swoop for Jetro Willems and Allan Saint-Maximin.

Now, French outlet Courrier Picard claim Krafth is on his way to St. James’ Park as the fourth new signing this summer.

The report claims Amiens withdrew the 25 year-old from their squad this weekend for fear of an injury that could scupper the transfer.

Krafth has five goals and ten assists in 147 career appearances as a right-back, and has racked up 20 caps for Sweden, per Transfermarkt.

After both Javier Manquillo and DeAndre Yedlin struggled to cement themselves in the role last term, Steve Bruce will be hoping Krafth makes an immediate impression.

And fans are hopeful he will be an upgrade on the aforementioned pair, as you can see from the Twitter reactions down below…
