Newcastle close to agreeing January loan for "Rolls Royce" Kalvin Phillips

Newcastle United are close to agreeing a loan deal to sign a long-term target in January, according to a fresh report that has emerged this week.

Sandro Tonali replacements

After being found guilty of breaching several betting rules, Sandro Tonali has been banned from playing football for ten months, meaning that the club will have to cope without having him available until he stages his return to domestic action. With Bruno Guimaraes being the only other natural defensive midfielder that Eddie Howe has – and even he is better further forward – PIF will know that they need to enter the market to find a suitable successor, and there is one player in particular who has continued to be linked ever since the summer.

Newcastle eyeing move to sign "quality" £40m+ star for Howe

It could solve a current problem…

ByTom Cunningham Dec 6, 2023

Manchester City’s Kalvin Phillips has fallen significantly low down in the pecking order having made zero starts and just four substitute appearances this season in the Premier League (WhoScored – Phillips statistics), and his potential availability has alerted club chiefs around the league.

The Magpies reportedly entered talks regarding a deal for the 28-year-old back in October, and with it since having also been revealed that he would be open to joining the club for the rest of the season, England’s international could soon be putting pen to paper at St. James’ Park if the following update is to be believed.

Newcastle set to sign Phillips

According to NUFC Blog, Newcastle are close to signing Phillips on loan, with an agreement between the two parties almost finalised ahead of January.

Newcastle United are close to securing the signing of Man City midfielder Kalvin Phillips. We’re told it’s now ‘a case of when not if’ regarding his proposed move to St James’ Park, with a loan deal all but agreed ahead of the January transfer window.”

Manchester City midfielder Kalvin Phillips.

Phillips can still be a "Rolls Royce" for Howe

While Phillips hasn’t been a regular feature under Pep Guardiola since joining Man City, he still currently ranks in the 99th percentile for pass completion and the 95th percentile for clearances per 90 when he does get the chance to play, highlighting his composure on the ball alongside his ability to get rid of the danger (FBRef – Phillips statistics).

The Leeds-born talent also has the versatility to operate as a centre-back as well as in three roles in the midfield, so his ability to provide cover in positions outside of his own should any unexpected injuries occur would make him a wonderful option to have in the building considering the Magpies' issues this term (Transfermarkt – Phillips statistics).

As dubbed by journalist Josh Bunting, Howe’s target is like a “Rolls Royce” because he’s more than capable of putting in a marauding box-to-box performance when called upon, and this is a quality that he could be able to showcase more should he put pen to paper on Tyneside.

Finally, Phillips shares the same representative, CAA Stellar, as Nick Pope, Javier Manquillo and Elliot Anderson (Newcastle agents), so this existing connection that his management already have to the club could give the board a small advantage in getting this deal across the line in January.

Extra power-company staff for Gabba's day-night Test after BBL drama

Energex has completed repairs to the faulty cable that was the cause of the problem in the BBL, and officials are confident the problem won’t reoccur

Andrew McGlashan in Brisbane22-Jan-2019The local energy company will have extra staff on site at the Gabba during Australia’s day-night Test against Sri Lanka in case of a repeat of the power outage that forced the abandonment of the Big Bash match between Brisbane Heat and Sydney Thunder last week, but officials are confident the problem won’t reoccur.Energex has completed repairs to a faulty cable under Stanley Street that was the cause of the problem which led to one of the light towers and a section of the ground, including the scoreboard, losing power as well as a number of buildings nearby the ground on the same power grid. The Gabba is fed by two separate grids and power was diverted from the working one but it wasn’t enough to avoid the BBL match being called off much to the anger of the Thunder who were well on track for victory. On Tuesday, Cricket Australia confirmed the result of the match would stand after Thunder appealed in an attempt to get two points for a win.Any repeat of the scenes in the day-night Test which starts on Thursday would be a major embarrassment but contingency plans have been put in place although it is understood there is not enough space at the venue to house portable generators. The floodlights will only take full effect for around the final hour of play with the game starting at 1pm and the sun setting at 6.46pm.Fans who were at the BBL match have been offered the complimentary tickets to a day’s play of the Test as compensation, after the minimum number of overs for a refund in the BBL game had been passed. That may help lift the numbers for a Test which is proving a tough sell with Brisbane having only ever hosted one Test in January and that was back in 1968, while the the elongated Big Bash is also offering competition.A power outage forced the Heat v Thunder game at the Gabba to be declared a no-result•Getty ImagesThe Gabba is battling to retain its status as one of the premier Test venues in the country despite Australia’s formidable record which has not seen them lose a Test at the ground since 1988. This season it missed out on hosting India, with the opening Test of the series going to Adelaide before the second at the new Perth Stadium. Next season is set to feature five Tests instead of this summer’s six with visits from Pakistan and New Zealand. This will be the second day-night Test staged in Brisbane after the 2016 clash against Pakistan which produced a thrilling conclusion as Australia secured a 39-run victory on the final day when Pakistan threatened to chase down a world record 490.This match will be played on the first Test surface prepared by the new groundsman David Sandurski who took over from Kevin Mitchell Jr following the 2017-18 Ashes Test. Sri Lanka have played twice at the ground, losing by an innings and 40 runs in 2007-08 and drawing on the 1989-90 visit.

The 10 most expensive Sunderland January signings

Whether or not Sunderland are a Premier League team in 2024/25, they will need to splash the cash in a bid to improve the side.

Of course, fans love to see their club splash the cash, but there is that element of risk when spending big fees on players, as for a club like the Black Cats, youngsters have played a big part and continue to do so at the Stadium of Light. And, evidence of this is the fact that almost all of Sunderland’s top 20 most expensive signings came before the 2017/18 season.

Nevertheless, Football FanCast have taken a look at the 10 most expensive January window signings that Sunderland have made.

10 Ignacio Scocco (January 2014) £3m from Internacional

Argentina international Ignacio Scocco joined the Black Cats for a reported £3m as they sought a dramatic great escape from the Premier League drop. Bought under Gustavo Poyet’s management in early 2014 officially for an undisclosed fee, the striker was unable to make a name for himself on Wearside despite the team surviving come the end of the season.

Scocco departed with just eight appearances to his name having only started on two occasions in the FA Cup, without a goal or assist to show for his efforts. This January marks two years since his retirement from the game.

9 Mart Poom (January 2003) £3.2m from Derby County

Poom originally joined Sunderland on an initial loan back in November of 2002, and the Wearside club soon made that permanent less than two months later as he became what is now the club’s ninth most expensive January signing.

Many fans will remember his iconic goal in the dying embers against his former club Derby County, where the goalkeeper powered a header into the net with the Black Cats trailing at the time.

Overall, the Estonian made 62 appearances for the Black Cats, conceding 57 goals and keeping 25 clean sheets.

8 Alfred N'Diaye (January 2013) £3-4m from Bursaspor

N’Diaye joined Sunderland to provide some much-needed support in the engine room at the Stadium of Light, but things just didn’t work out. He made just 16 appearances for the Black Cats before being shipped out by Paolo Di Canio.

For someone who cost as much as he did, it really was a disaster as the club made around a £2m loss. And things don’t appear to have gotten too much better for the African midfielder, as he was declared bankrupt in 2019.

7 Andy Reid (January 2008) Up to £4m from Charlton Athletic

Reid started in blistering form for the Black Cats and was a fan favourite for some, but a succession of fitness problems saw him fall down the pecking order at the Stadium of Light, which led to an emergency loan move to Sheffield United.

He later went on to leave Sunderland on a free transfer to Blackpool.

All in all, he proved to be a good signing, which is backed up by his six goals and 18 assists in 80 appearances in red and white.#

6 Will Grigg (January 2019) £4m from Wigan Athletic

Signing from then-Championship outfit Wigan while the Black Cats were a League One side, Will Grigg is Sunderland’s most expensive January signing since their Premier League days.

It is reported that their accepted bid – rubber-stamped very close to the winter 2019 deadline – was their eighth attempt at luring the Northern Ireland international over to the Stadium of Light.

Now at non-league side Chesterfield, Grigg racked up just eight goals in 62 Sunderland displays, and after two subsequent loan spells away at MK Dons and Rotherham United, joined the former on a free transfer in the summer of 2022. Sunderland can perhaps forget about his spell now they are a comfortable Championship club and looking on the way up.

5 Claudio Reyna (January 2002) £4.5m from Rangers

The signing of Claudio Reyna was a big deal for Peter Reid and Sunderland back in 2002, with the loss of Don Hutchison really halting his plans at an important time.

A goal on his debut against Paul Gascoigne’s Everton to win the game for the Black Cats was the best possible start in the red and white stripes. However, the American, who later impressed in the 2002 World Cup, would damage knee ligaments in an October draw between Sunderland and Bolton, which ended up being his last game for the Wearsiders.

He made just 28 appearances on Wearside before joining Manchester City.

4 Lamine Kone (January 2016) £5m from FC Lorient

The central defender started well on Wearside as he put in a number of impressive displays which helped the Black Cats avoid the drop in the Premier League. But, apart from that, it was a rather unhappy three-and-a-half-year spell for the Ivorian at the Stadium of Light.

Sunderland ended up being relegated to the Championship the following season, as when Sam Allardyce left, things just went downhill.

He couldn’t even get into the side in the Championship under a couple of managers, as another relegation followed.

Inevitably, his exit came after Jack Ross decided he wasn’t in his League One plans, which led to a loan and permanent move to Strasbourg after making a total of 72 appearances in England.

3 Danny Graham (January 2013) £5m from Swansea City

The signing of Danny Graham for around £5m proved to be a massive blunder by the club.

Many fans expected plenty of goals at the Stadium of Light from the Englishman as they’d been accustomed to a rather prolific striker during his time at Swansea. But, that wasn’t the case as he managed just one goal in 42 appearances during his first spell at the club.

Graham ended up leaving on a free transfer after a handful of loan spells away from Wearside.

2 Stephane Sessegnon (January 2011) £6m from Paris Saint-Germain

The attacking midfielder joined Sunderland in January 2011 for around £6m.

He proved to be a really good buy for the Black Cats as an absolute menace in the final third, with a combination of speed, tricks, finishing and creativity proving too much for even some of the best Premier League defenders. He managed to score an impressive 18 goals and laid on 20 assists for his teammates.

However, Sessegnon, who was one of Sunderland’s highest earners, was let go by Paolo Di Canio so that he could bring in his own men. To be fair, he was unsettled on Wearside for some time, but Sunderland had hoped that by handing him a new four-year contract 12 months before he would settle down. But he still made the decision that he’d had enough.

1 Wahbi Khazri (January 2016) £9m from Bordeaux

Well, for number one on the list, Wahbi Khazri arguably had one of the worst times at the club.

He made 42 appearances on Wearside but offered little to nothing in the final third, with three goals and two assists.

The Tunisian was one of the top earners at the Stadium of Light, and moving his wages off the books and getting a fee in return was the right move for Jack Ross at the time, as another player from Sunderland’s Premier League splurge who proved to be a waste.

Liverpool could hinder Mac Allister with move for £50m "genius"

The true art of Liverpool's success under Jurgen Klopp's guidance is not the scintillating attacking arrowhead, nor is it the imperious defence that strikes fear into hapless attackers when Virgil van Dijk is at his apex.

No, it is the never-say-die mentality that never allows the opposition a chance to breathe. Sewn into the very fabric of the club's core, Liverpool breeds winners, and while many of the stars of the illustrious Klopp era did not arrive with glittering trophy cabinets, they have been moulded into players of the highest pedigree.

Liverpool could sign "immense" Van Dijk partner in bid for £52m Arsenal target

Jurgen Klopp is interested in strengthening his title-chasing side’s defence this winter.

ByAngus Sinclair Dec 28, 2023

Occasionally, however, the Reds have opted to sign a player of established brilliance, with honours and accolades pinned to their garment and with a hunger to replicate the feats on Merseyside.

Liverpool have identified a player who fits this mould; indeed, Inter Milan's Nicolo Barella remains a target and could be the subject of an official approach in 2024.

Liverpool transfer news – Nicolo Barella

Italian outlet L'Interista has recently revealed that while Inter are eager to commence contract negotiations with Barella, there are many obstacles in the way of an agreement and this could open the door for Liverpool, Chelsea and Newcastle United to swoop.

In the summer, the Telegraph reported that Newcastle were closing in on a £50m deal to sign the Italy international, though the Serie A side rejected advances in the late stage, with Barella himself also discouraged.

Last week, revelations came to light that Inter are embroiled in financial uncertainties and might need to cash in on some key players to balance the books.

Although multiple parties have registered an interest, there is a sense that 2024 is the perfect year to advance negotiations and snap Barella up, and this is something that Klopp will undoubtedly be considering.

Nicolo Barella's style of play

Barella has been hailed as a "little warrior" by talent scout Jacek Kulig in the past, and while he may be diminutive in stature, the maestro projects a monstrous presence in the centre of the park.

As per FBref, he ranks among the top 8% of midfielders across Europe's top five leagues over the past year for shot-creating actions, the top 6% for progressive passes, the top 12% for progressive carries and the top 9% for progressive passes received per 90.

Such metrics highlight a remarkable level of creativity but also a willingness to surge up the pitch and make things happen in pockets between the lines, evidenced by his return of nine goals and ten assists across all competitions last season, as Inter won the Coppa Italia and the Supercoppa Italiana.

Deft and delightful, Barella's direct rate of contribution might have declined this season but he has still been integral to Simeone Inzaghi's side's pursuit of the Scudetto, currently in first place after 17 matches, four points clear from Juventus.

Having started 16 of these fixtures, the 26-year-old has scored two goals, supplied three assists and completed 87% of his passes in the centre of the park, averaging 5.0 ball recoveries and 1.1 key passes per outing.

Having once been declared a "genius" by journalist Mike Pielluci, there's no denying that Barella would be a credit to any ambitious side on English shores, but given the overload of creative and multi-functional midfielders in Klopp's squad, the question does arise regarding whether it would be a prudent venture to launch significant funds toward the acquisition of Barella.

Who Nicolo Barella could replace at Liverpool

Of course, Liverpool maestro Thiago Alcantara, aged 32, is out of contract at the end of the season and has not actually featured once during the 2023/24 campaign as he fights to return from a long-term injury.

Undisputably magnificent, the distinguished Spaniard ranks among the top 3% of midfielders for passes attempted and progressive passes, the top 6% for successful take-ons, the top 4% for interceptions and the top 13% for tackles per 90, but his inability to avoid the clamping jaws of the medical room will ultimately convince Klopp that he must depart in June.

While Thiago occupies a deeper-lying role than his Cagliari-born counterpart, both are sublime passers of the ball with a metronomic swagger that establishes control and command in the engine room.

Barella could be a worthy successor but his signing still wouldn't address the concerns relating to Liverpool's requirement for a specialist No. 6.

The move could also prove to be detrimental to the progress and success of Alexis Mac Allister at Anfield, with the Argentinian World Cup winner completing a £35m transfer to the club in the summer.

While Mac Allister has been utilised from deep this season, he remains one of the Premier League's most creative and cultured centre-midfielders, earning praise in the past for his "intelligent" approach by countryman Sergio Aguero.

As the graph above shows, Mac Allister and Barella are midfielders of similar like; not quite cut from the same cloth but mirroring in qualities that would perhaps not be worth the cost, with Dominik Szoboszlai, Harvey Elliott and Ryan Gravenberch also plying their trade at Anfield.

The backline needs attention and, while Wataru Endo has been impressive of late, a long-term solution to the anchor of Liverpool's midfield must be discovered too.

Barella might be an excellent player, perhaps he is even world-class, but there it might be best to invest resources elsewhere to maintain the dynamism and growth of this exciting Liverpool team.

Plenty of questions for Mumbai Indians against CSK's old pros

Yuvraj Singh has the worst middle-overs dot-ball percentage of any batsman in IPL 2019. Will Mumbai replace him with Ishan Kishan?

Agarkar: Mumbai start as favourites against Chennai

Big pictureYet again, Mumbai Indians have begun a season poorly. The ghosts of a pasting from Delhi Capitals in their season opener seemed to have vanished when they restricted Royal Challengers Bangalore in the next game, but an umpiring error took away the sheen. It seemingly took away the confidence from their bowlers too – two nights later, all their main performers from the win were blunted by Kings XI Punjab. Mumbai are among the worst bowling teams in the tournament right now, and despite having a relatively constant core in place are getting caught off-guard in various situations.Chennai Super Kings is the only other franchise that also relies on a stable line-up, and despite the appearance of being the weaker team, man-to-man, in this fixture, have managed to make it work much better than Mumbai so far. Three wins in three matches, based largely on using the right resources at the right time – and a little bit of pure MS Dhoni magic – makes them favourites against Rohit Sharma’s team.Form guide (most recent matches first)

This shouldn’t stop them from playing Ishan Kishan as a pure batsman in place of Yuvraj Singh, who has been striking at a significantly lower rate than every partner he’s batted with so far. At 40.7%, no one in the IPL currently has a worse dot-ball percentage in the middle-overs than Yuvraj. Rajasthan Royals had only one left-hand batsman when they played against Super Kings on Sunday; this is likely why Mitchell Santner was brought into the XI in place of Harbhajan. Against Mumbai Indians and their various left-handers, Super Kings are likely to go straight back to the offspinner and to playing with only three overseas players. However, if they’re worried about their batting, particularly the runs they’re getting at the top of the order, Super Kings might be tempted to bring in either Sam Billings of Faf du Plessis to replace Ambati Rayudu, given they have Kedar Jadhav and Suresh Raina as bowling options. Mitchell McClenaghan has been a trusted wicket-taking option for Mumbai for many seasons, but if Jason Behrendorff is sans jetlag, he should be slotted straight in. Behrendorff’s economy rate in T20 Powerplays is 6.2 and he averages 18.6, which is among the best ever.Stats that matter Mumbai Indians have failed to beat Super Kings in a season only once before – in 2014. Overall, they lead the head-to-head 13-11 and have won four of the last five fixtures between these teams. Suresh Raina strikes at more than 140 against any of Mumbai’s likely bowling options on the night, with the exception of Malinga against whom he strikes at 127.8. Only Bumrah from Mumbai’s entire roster has dismissed him more than once in T20s – twice in seven innings. An underrated feature of Super Kings’ success so far is that in three consecutive matches, Deepak Chahar has bowled out his four overs up front. In none of those matches has he conceded more than five an over. Thirty-nine of his 72 balls this season have been dot balls, and he’s currently conceding 4.66 per over.

If you’re not going to the World Cup expecting to win, then you probably shouldn’t go. But I’m not going to lie, we have some fantastic players.”Three of them – Kagiso Rabada, Imran Tahir and Faf du Plessis – have been in excellent form for several months, including at the IPL, and Steyn hoped with their help and a bit of fortune, the World Cup could finally be theirs.”We’re led by Faf, who’s been in fantastic form lately. And in the IPL, Imran Tahir has been right up there in terms of wickets. From Quinton de Kock all the way down to No. 11, they’re all match-winners. We just need to go there and hope a bit of luck – weather, a missed no-ball – goes your way, and you could win the tournament.”You look at KG [Rabada], he’s been bowling exceptionally well. Kagiso is a wunderkind. Just hope he continues that kind of form. He’s come on to the scene in international cricket and grabbed the opportunity with both hands. We’ve seen players come in, show signs of extreme excellence and then fade away, but KG is someone we can get used to.”Steyn also stressed that ODI rankings have little value once the World Cup begins. His belief is that only those who adapt earliest to the conditions in England will win the trophy.”You just need to go there, figure out which teams are best adapting the conditions and then the team that hits the ground running first has the best chance.”Dale Steyn is carried on Kagiso Rabada’s shoulders after his South Africa record 422nd Test wicket•Getty ImagesWhen asked which other teams were favourites entering the competition Steyn said, “I think every team going to the World Cup has a massive chance. England are playing in England, and they’re playing some good white-ball cricket.”But I think you really need to take rankings and throw it out of the window. Rankings these days don’t mean anything. I don’t even know what ranking West Indies have, and they just beat England. Australia were losing, and then they’ve started winning again.”As for Steyn’s mid-season IPL stint, he said that a call from Royal Challengers coach and fellow South African Gary Kirsten brought him to India. Despite being snubbed at the IPL auction in December 2018, Steyn said he holds no grudges, and that although Royal Challengers have lost seven of their first eight games, miracles are always possible in a tournament format like the IPL.”It happened really quickly,” Steyn said. “I got a call from Gary last week. He asked me have I been playing, have I been bowling, and I said yes. I was actually prepping to play our local T20 tournament. It can sometimes be difficult coming halfway through the IPL and the World Cup coming up, but we got through it, and here I am.”I wasn’t originally picked up for the IPL, but that’s totally okay. Coaches have plans and structures, and if you’re not in those plans you shouldn’t take it personally. It’s nothing personal, it’s business. But to be honest with you, I just love playing cricket. Whether I was playing T20 cricket in South Africa or came here, I’d still be doing exactly the same thing. And when I have the ball in hand, I want to win for whoever I’m playing for.”It’s sometimes nice to join halfway through a tournament, because you bring in some injection of excitement. Obviously, the season hasn’t gone how RCB have planned, but that’s cricket. It’s like fishing. They would call fishing as ‘catching’ if we caught fish all the time. We don’t, and that’s why it’s called fishing. But it’s a strange game. if we win our games, and hopefully the energy I bring in pays off, then anything can happen.”South Africa face England in the World Cup’s opening fixture on May 30 at The Oval. They announce their 15-man World Cup squad on Wednesday.
