Barcelona player ratings vs Osasuna: Robert Lewandowski finishes it off – Hansi Flick's side move three points clear at top of La Liga table as Alejandro Balde, Pedri and Ferran Torres dominate

The hosts strengthened their grip on top spot in La Liga as they thumped Osasuna 3-0 on Thursday evening.

Barcelona were without Raphinha, who has been an undeniable standout this season, due to his exertions with Brazil, while Robert Lewandowski began the game on the bench after he picked up a knock playing for Poland, but they were comfortable winners all the same, moving three points clear of Real Madrid.

Without Lewandowski, Ferran Torres led the line, and scored within 10 minutes, finishing a pinpoint cross from Alejandro Balde.

Just seven minutes later, Olmo was sent through one-on-one by Pedri and was fouled by Sergio Herrera. A penalty was awarded, but Olmo saw his spot-kick saved. VAR soon intervened though, ruling that an Osasuna player encroached into the box; Olmo scored his retaken kick.

Shortly after, though, he required substituting, as he limped off the pitch after seemingly sustaining a muscle injury.

In a half they dominated, Barca almost had a third before half-time but Torres' superb free-kick could only rattle the bar.

Lewandowski did come off the bench in the second half, and he scored on 75 minutes, directing a powerful header into the back of the net after a superb delivery from Fermin Lopez.

Wojciech Szczesny (6/10):

One very clever dummy saw him leave the pressing striker in the dust. Barely tested when it came to actual saves.

Jules Kounde (7/10):

Excellent at right-back once again. Covers ground so well and defends with real vigour.

Eric Garcia (7/10):

Booked but was adventurous in possession and strong in the backline. Did not miss a single tackle.

Inigo Martinez (7/10):

Dominant. Won basically every duel, particularly in the air. Such a strong defender and never looked in trouble.

Alejandro Balde (9/10):

Fine ball in for Torres to finish. A superbly dynamic footballer, constantly looking to drive forward, and can cause so many problems. This was a truly excellent performance.

Pedri (8/10):

Superb ball into Olmo allowed him to win his penalty. As metronomic as ever. He so rarely gives the ball away.

Frenkie de Jong (7/10):

Subbed at half-time after a fine first half in which he took immense care of the ball, and kept the hosts ticking.

Gavi (7/10):

Ended the game as Barca's captain. A very tidy midfield display.

Lamine Yamal (8/10):

Some glorious touches and one slaloming run in the first half saw him skin two players and only narrowly miss the bottom corner. More than one key pass, and the kind of attacking flair that saw Osasuna regularly double up on him.

Ferran Torres (7/10):

Showed a striker's instinct to meet Balde's cross and open the scoring. Led the line well before his substitution.

Dani Olmo (7/10):

Got away with his poor penalty, as he scored the retake. Was flourishing in the pocket between left wing and the 10, but had to be subbed after sustaining an injury.

AFPSubs & Manager

Fermin Lopez (8/10):

On for Olmo. Some great footwork and an exceptional cross for Lewandowski to score.

Pablo Torre (7/10):

Replaced De Jong at half-time. Great defensive header kick-started the move for Lewandowski's goal.

Robert Lewandowski (7/10):

On for Torres with 20 minutes to go. Scored a superb header.

Pau Victor (N/A):

On late.

Gerard Martin (N/A):

A late sub at 3-0.

Hansi Flick (7/10):

As good as it could have been. Barcelona were never in trouble but he will hope that Olmo returns quickly. That potential setback is the only blot on Barcelona's copybook.

Southampton have endured a bitterly disappointing season and sit rock-bottom of the Premier League, having taken just 10 points from the 30 games they have played. Having won just twice all season, a defeat to Tottenham on Sunday would see Southampton relegated, and they would become the earliest team, by gameweek, to fall through the trapdoor into the Championship.

AdvertisementGetty Images SportTHE EXPLANATION

Derby County – who were historically bad in 2007-08 and earned just 11 points all campaign – and Huddersfield Town have the distinction of the earliest relegations at present. They were both relegated in March, but after 32 games. Thus, a loss for Southampton on Sunday would see them write a piece of unwanted history, as their clash with Spurs is their 31st fixture of the league season.

THE BIGGER PICTURE

Southampton will become the worst team in Premier League history if they fail to add another point to their tally in their final eight games of the campaign. They face fixtures against the likes of Arsenal, Manchester City and Aston Villa before the season's end.

Praveen Jayawickrama ruled out of second Test with Australia due to Covid

Sri Lanka left-arm spinner had been expected to come into team for Galle rematch

Madushka Balasuriya04-Jul-2022Sri Lanka left-arm spinner Praveen Jayawickrama has been ruled out of the second Test against Australia, due to start in Galle on Friday, after testing positive for Covid-19.An SLC media release stated that the 23-year-old had complained of feeling “unwell”, which was prompted the test. “Jayawickrama was immediately isolated from the rest of the team members and now will remain in room isolation for 5 days,” added the release.Related

Following Jayawickrama testing positive, the rest of the Sri Lanka players and support staff were subjected to Rapid Antigen Tests, with SLC confirming they had all returned negative results. The news is a blow for Sri Lanka, who would have been banking on Jayawickrama in their bid to level the series. Sri Lanka succumbed to a heavy 10-wicket defeat on a spin-heavy Galle surface last week. However among the most striking aspects was seeing the visiting spinners extracting far more assistance off the surface than those from the home side. Of those left-arm spinner Lasith Embuldeniya struggled the most, going wicketless and bowling just the 15 overs.Jayawickrama had been slated to come into the side, likely in place of the out-of-form Embuldeniya. His unavailability leaves Embuldeniya as the only left-arm spinner in the squad, though the uncapped spin-bowling allrounder Dunith Wellalage, 19, who had impressed in the ODI series against Australia and ended it as the leading wicket-taker, is on the list of standby players.Jayawickrama is the second player to contract Covid on tour, with Angelo Mathews being ruled out midway through the first Test. Mathews is currently recovering from the illness, though SLC is hopeful of him being passed fit for the second Test.

Aston Villa now targeting January move to sign "rapid" Mingueza alternative

As they continue to weigh up whether to meet Oscar Mingueza’s price tag, Aston Villa have reportedly set their sights on a potential alternative option in one of La Liga’s quickest players.

Aston Villa transfer news

Following the pending sale of Jaden Philogene for a reported £21m, those in the Midlands could spring into action on the incomings front. Names such as Donyell Malen and, of course, Mingueza have already been mentioned among the options that the Villans could turn to this month but it remains to be seen just how much they’ll be in position to spend.

Mingueza is particularly an interesting case. The defender is reportedly top of Villa’s wishlist in the right-back department but his €20m (£17m) valuation could yet be enough to turn those in the Midlands away from any deal and instead towards another La Liga ace.

According to Relevo, Aston Villa are now targeting a move to sign Andrei Ratiu from Rayo Vallecano this month. The right-back has reportedly been the third-quickest player in La Liga so far this season – recording a speed of 35.38 km/h – and could now add that electric pace to Unai Emery’s backline.

6 players who could join or leave Aston Villa in January

Aston Villa will be aiming to make a few signings and sell some players this January.

ByRoss Kilvington Jan 9, 2025

Gradually becoming more of an important part of the current Rayo Vallecano side, it remains to be seen just how much the Spanish side demand to sanction the sale of their defender.

Whether it’s Ratiu, Mingueza or another alternative option, however, adding a fresh face down the right-hand side of their defence seems to be among Aston Villa’s priorities this month.

"Rapid" Ratiu could replace Cash

One player that recent rumours should concern is Matty Cash, who would be in instant danger of losing his starting role under Emery if Ratiu arrived before the end of the January transfer window. The Romanian enjoyed an excellent Euro 2024 and could yet replicate that performance on the biggest stage in the Premier League – leaving Cash to settle for a place on the bench.

Although analyst Ben Mattinson described Ratiu as “rapid”, the right-back is also far more than just a quick defender as the numbers highlight in abundance. Outperforming Cash so far this season, Ratiu has proved his ability to make an impact going forward whilst being perfectly placed to recover possession at an impressive rate – something that Cash has contrastingly struggled with.

So, if Villa are not willing to meet Mingueza’s valuation then the Rayo Vallecano man is an intelligent second choice option – especially if they can secure a cheap transfer fee before the end of the January transfer window.

Jude Bellingham and Kylian Mbappe at Arsenal?! How Gunners almost signed Real Madrid superstars as teenagers – with one deal worth just £500k and the other leaving Arsene Wenger heartbroken

Had it not been for very fine margins, Los Blancos' two leading men might have both been plying plying their trade at Emirates Stadium right now

Arsenal will have to pull off an upset for the ages to reach the Champions League semi-finals. After thrashing PSV 9-3 on aggregate in the round of 16, Mikel Arteta's side were handed the worst possible last-eight draw against holders Real Madrid, who progressed after ruthlessly dismantling Pep Guardiola's declining Manchester City.

Real were deserving winners last season, but look even stronger now, not least because of the summer addition of Kylian Mbappe. Indeed, Carlo Ancelotti's men are still in the hunt for a historic treble, while in stark contrast, Arsenal have fallen way behind Liverpool in the Premier League title race, and the Champions League is the only trophy left for them to play for.

Arsenal have enough quality to cause Real plenty of problems at the back – just as Valencia did in La Liga at the weekend – but won't have any hope of winning the quarter-final tie if they can't keep Mbappe, and his right-hand man Jude Bellingham, quiet across the two legs. They wouldn't be the first team to fail in that regard, and certainly not the last.

After a slow start to life at Real, Mbappe has re-emerged as one of the most deadly strikers in the business and a firm contender for the Ballon d'Or again. However, he may face stiff competition for the 2025 Golden Ball from Bellingham, who at just 21 already looks like a complete midfielder – and a future Real captain.

Their presence gives Real an advantage in any game, but in an alternate universe, it would have been Arsenal benefitting heading into this blockbuster clash. That's because the Gunners came agonisingly close to signing Mbappe Bellingham when they were teenagers, with one bargain deal falling through at the last minute and the other leaving legendary former manager Arsene Wenger heartbroken…

GettyCompensation gaffe

Bellingham enjoyed a meteoric rise to prominence at Birmingham City, becoming the youngest player in the club's entire history when making his debut at 16 years and 38 days old against Portsmouth in a 2019 Carabao Cup tie. That was the first of 44 appearances Bellingham would make in what turned out to be his only full season in the Blues senior team, as Borussia Dortmund swooped to secure the midfielder's services for £25 million ($32m) in the summer of 2020.

It was a huge coup for the German giants, who reportedly fended off competition from Manchester United, Chelsea, Real Madrid and Bayern Munich. But Bellingham could actually have been playing for Arsenal years before then had circumstances not conspired against them.

According to , the Gunners made a formal approach for Bellingham when he was in Birmingham's U14s squad. Arsenal were willing to pay the £500,000 compensation required to bring the teenager to Emirates Stadium, but an 'unforeseen delay' of 48 hours on signing off that fee allowed the Blues to beat them to the punch.

Bellingham signed a contract with Birmingham instead, leaving Arsenal red-faced. That was not, however, the end of the club's pursuit of the English prodigy.

AdvertisementGetty ImagesBellingham deal was 'kind of done'

Tony Adams has claimed that Arsenal were also in pole position to sign Bellingham after his stunning breakthrough campaign at Birmingham. "He was spotted very early on, not by me, by the Arsenal recruitment office. The chief scout [Steve Morrow] was absolutely bowled over by him and the great prospect that he is. He had more or less done the deal," the Gunners icon told in November 2020.

On that occasion, though, a change in the boardroom led to the deal falling by the wayside, as Adams added: "At that moment the new sporting director Edu came in from Brazil and had no European experience and no UK experience. I think it got lost in the transition, Edu didn't know anything about this player. Unfortunately, the chief scout had the deal kind of done – we missed that one unfortunately. They are the type of players we need to get hold of at the Arsenal if we’re ever going to develop. These kind of players we need to tie up, get them to the Arsenal and build a phenomenal league team."

To this day, it's not clear whether Adams' story was 100 percent accurate – it seems unlikely that Edu would have neglected to push through a transfer for one of English football's most promising talents – but he's certainly right that Arsenal dropped the ball. Bellingham's subsequent success at Dortmund, and later Madrid, suggests he might have been able to push Arsenal over the line in their pursuit of a first Premier League title since 2003-04, and they only have themselves to blame for missing out, having failed to act quickly enough to capitalise on the groundwork put in by the scouting department.

Getty ImagesMbappe 'wanted to sign'

Arsenal's interest in Mbappe can be traced even further back, all the way to the start of 2013. At that stage, the Frenchman was working his way through the academy ranks at AS Bondy, and former Gunners defender Gilles Grimandi was one of the scouts who had recognised his potential.

A then-14-year-old Mbappe held formal talks with Arsenal, but ultimately stayed in his homeland and joined Monaco, which Grimandi believes was a sporting decision rather than a financial one. "We just could not convince him," he admitted to . "He was out of contract in June 2013 and we met him in February. If we could have convinced him to join, he would have changed the club – but he then decided on Monaco. Arsenal were not always playing their best so it was quite complicated.

"At first it was easy, as soon as we talked to a player he wanted to sign. However, if you are not getting results it is difficult to bring top players to help the team. That’s why it is important to stay at the top for as long as possible. It is so much easier."

Getty ImagesWenger meeting

Mbappe graduated from the Monaco academy just two years later, and broke Thierry Henry's record as the club's youngest debutant when lining up in a Ligue 1 clash against Caen aged 16 years and 347 days. By the start of the 2016, Mbappe boasted a seemingly endless list of potential suitors as the most revered young prospect on the continent.

Arsenal were on it, and Wenger put in the legwork to make the transfer happen. "I went to his parents and tried to convince them," the former Gunners boss told French broadcaster last June. "At the time, he was a little shy, people were starting to ask him for his first autographs in Monaco."

Once again, though the Gunners' efforts proved fruitless. Mbappe opted to sign his first professional contract at Monaco in May of that year, committing his future to the club until 2019, but surprisingly, Wenger held no bitterness. "At the beginning of your career, you don't have too much pressure at the start and they managed to persuade him to extend it by promising him that he would play more easily at Monaco than at Arsenal, Liverpool or Real Madrid," he explained. "We can say that his parents advised him well and that he made the right decision."

Grimaldi, who had also been part of the team that tried to persuade Mbappe to choose Arsenal, added to : "We met his parents in London who came to the training ground and alongside Arsene and Richard Law [then transfer chief] we travelled to meet Kylian in the South of France. We tried, and I really don't think we were far from getting him, but he declined the project and signed a new deal with Monaco. I'd say it is probably the biggest disappointment in my 15 years as an Arsenal scout."

Dinesh Chandimal, Oshada Fernando hit fifties on shared first day

For Pakistan, Nawaz picked up two wickets while Yasir, Nauman, Naseem returned one apiece

Andrew Fidel Fernando24-Jul-2022The openers put on 92 together, Dinesh Chandimal made 80, and Niroshan Dickwella went to stumps on 42 not out, as Sri Lanka strode to 315 for 6 for the day. On a flat Galle surface that will take some days to properly wear, this was neither a commanding total, nor a modest one. While spinners found turn, it wasn’t the rapid variety that causes collapses. The quicks found some movement off the surface, but only while the seam was hard. It was a batting-friendly day. And if anything, Sri Lanka may be kicking themselves for losing one wicket too many.Of Pakistan’s bowlers, Mohammad Nawaz seemed the likeliest to take wickets, even if he was somewhat wayward at times. Nauman Ali, the other left-arm spinner, was more consistent, and took the wicket of Angelo Mathews, who was playing his 100th Test. But Pakistan’s bowlers didn’t have a lot to work with – the turn off the pitch still mostly slow, even if the occasional ball erupted off the pitch.Sri Lanka may reflect they were unfortunate to lose two wickets to such deliveries. The balls that got Oshada Fernando (from Nawaz), and Mathews (from Nauman), turned and bounced more than most deliveries had during either batter’s stay. Then there was the dismissal of Kusal Mendis, which came from one of those run outs where the bowler does well to get a hand to a straight drive and the non-striker doesn’t get their bat down quickly enough. Kusal had only faced 10 balls, and was out by just a couple of frames. It was Chandimal, the form batter in the Sri Lanka side, who pushed Sri Lanka forward better than anyone else, however. Two of his first three boundaries boundaries were streaky – an inside edge past the stumps off Yasir Shah, and a outside edge past slip against Naseem. But eventually, things settled, and Chandimal was in his confident-but-measured self, finding gaps through cover when he went for the big drives, working the singles square on either side of the pitch, but rarely employing the sweep apart from when he was looking for a boundary. He got to fifty off the 99th ball he faced, and hit a couple of sixes off Yasir Shah soon after – one over deep square leg when Yasir sent him a long hop, and the other over wide long-on, when he got down on one knee to clatter Yasir. As with several of Sri Lanka’s batters, Chandimal was out against the run of play, when he had been under little pressure from the bowlers. He ran down at Nawaz, got nowhere close to the ball, tried to launch him over cow corner anyway, and ended up just giving a leading edge out to point, where Fawad Alam gobbled a straightforward catch.Mohammad Nawaz picked up two wickets on day one•AFP/Getty ImagesOshada, Sri Lanka’s other half-centurion, had also attacked the spinners in the morning session. He used his feet to hit three sixes in the arc between midwicket and long-off, although the first hour had largely been defined by watchfulness and defence. He got to his half century, raised his bat, and was out moments later, edging a big-turning Nawaz delivery behind, as he sought to defend. His was the first of three top order wickets to fall for 28 runs. Kusal was out from that unlucky run out off the ball that turned out to be the last of the first session. Soon after resumption, a Dimuth Karunaratne reverse sweep found backward point, and Sri Lanka’s captain was out for 40, again despite the lack of serious pressure upon him. This, though, came in Yasir’s best spell of the day, in which he also tested Mathews and Chandimal. While Sri Lanka did not put on a century stand, they had three that surpassed 50, and only one that was worth less than 24. Dickwella’s busy 42 not out off 43, in which he hit five boundaries and a six, perhaps edged the day for the hosts, though there’s plenty of work to be done by the lower order. At stumps, Sri Lanka were dreaming of a total in excess of 400. Pakistan one south of 350.

Arsenal could look to the Parc des Princes for a January attacking reinforcement, with another Paris Saint-Germain regular now considering a mid-season exit alongside exit-bound teammate Randal Kolo Muani.

Arsenal targeting new forward for Arteta in January

The north Londoners have lost star winger Bukayo Saka until March, following the England international’s hamstring surgery, and this has left manager Mikel Arteta with a glaring hole in his squad going forward.

Arteta personally wants Arsenal to sign £50m Saka replacement in January

ByEmilio Galantini Jan 8, 2025

Saka’s return, in terms of both goals and assists, is absolutely crucial for Arsenal. The 24-year-old bagged an incredible 20 goals and 14 assists in all competitions last term, and continued in that fine form with nine goals and 13 assists so far this term.

Minus that output, Arsenal are struggling to finish teams off right now – most recently dropping points in a 1-1 draw away to Brighton and wasting a host of chances in their 2-0 Carabao Cup semi-final first leg defeat against Newcastle at the Emirates Stadium on Tuesday.

The Gunners are clinging on to this year’s Premier League title race by a thread, and Man United did them a huge favour last weekend by sealing a surprise 2-2 draw away to Liverpool.

Arsenal manager MikelArtetabefore the match

Arsenal are arguably in need of a goalscoring winger who can provide that extra injection of threat in the final third, and it is believed that Arteta personally wants Nico Williams from Athletic Bilbao in January (The Athletic).

However, Arteta won’t have it all his own way, as the Spain international is not agitating to leave Bilbao. The cost of a winter operation, when taking into account Williams’ salary and £50 million release clause, also makes this possible signing a more feasible one for the summer (The Athletic).

While the 22-year-old would be an exciting addition, there are other options, like PSG forward Lee Kang-in.

Arsenal could make January move for PSG attacker Lee Kang-in

The South Korea star is apparently unsettled and thinking about leaving Luis Enrique’s side before deadline day, according to The Athletic, despite playing regularly.

Kang-in has made 24 appearances in all competitions for the Ligue 1 champions this season, bagging six goals and two assists in that time.

The 23-year-old has featured in a variety of roles under Enrique as well, playing as a right-winger, centre-forward and as a central attacking midfielder – which should make him pretty appealing to Arteta given just how much the tactician is rumoured to value versatility.

It is therefore little surprise that The Athletic and reliable journalist James McNicholas say Arsenal could make a January move for Kang-in. However, this is dependent on PSG being willing to green-light a loan with the option to buy, rather than an outright permanent deal.

The French heavyweights value Kang-in at around £37 million, double what they originally paid for him, and he is quite highly-regarded at the club – both in terms of his ability and personality.

Aston Villa join race to sign "exciting" new £21m+ striker alongside Malen

Having already secured the arrival of Donyell Malen from Borussia Dortmund, Aston Villa are now reportedly setting their sights on an in-demand forward worth over £21m.

Aston Villa transfer news

Desperate to make it back-to-back top four finishes in the Premier League and qualify for the Champions League as a result, those at Villa Park have acted as swift as ever to hand Unai Emery a fresh option going forward. Malen – an experienced forward after his Dortmund exploits – instantly hands the Spaniard an upgrade on the struggling Leon Bailey and a player capable of sharing the goalscoring responsibility with Ollie Watkins and Jhon Duran.

When asked about that aforementioned experience in a question and answer session with the club’s official website, Malen said: “I’ve seen a lot of football. I’ve been in different leagues now. I’ve played Euros, I’ve played a lot of tournaments, so that creates a lot of character, so from there, I just have to show it.”

As one experienced option arrives, however, a younger option looks to have emerged onto the radar of those in the Midlands. According to Sky Germany’s Florian Plettenberg, Aston Villa have now joined the race to sign Stefanos Tzimas from PAOK Salonika following his loan spell at FC Nurnberg at the end of the season.

The 19-year-old striker has also attracted the interest of Liverpool an Brighton & Hove Albion to create quite the race for his signature which will reportedly be worth €25m (£21m) plus add-ons when the summer transfer window arrives.

A player who has thrived in Germany’s second division on loan this season, Tzimas could yet receive the ultimate chance to take the biggest step of his career so far courtesy of Aston Villa.

"Exciting" Tzimas is one to watch

Whilst he is still only a teenager, Tzimas has shown all the signs that point towards a future star whilst at Nurnberg and deserves to reap the rewards for such success. Alas, whether Aston Villa’s interest brings Duran’s future into question once more will be interesting to see. The clinical forward has already been linked with a move away to West Ham United this month and Tzimas could be seen as an ideal replacement when the summer arrives.

Jhon Duran

Scoring eight goals and assisting another two in 15 games in all competitions so far this season, the Greek striker certainly knows how to find the back of the net in a rise to stardom that Jacek Kulig saw coming in October. The Football Talent Scout dubbed the forward “one of the most interesting young strikers in Europe” and predicted an “exciting future ahead”.

A summer switch to Aston Villa would only see the forward accelerate towards that increasingly impressive potential too.

Club World Cup Scouting Report: Inter Milan have earned title as Italy's best, now look achieve more on world stage

The Italian giants will be among the top contenders to take the trophy as they look to build on recent success

After a decade of Juventus dominance at the very top of Italian soccer, Serie A has become as entertaining as any league in the world. With a number of strong teams, the country's top flight has gone from Europe's most predictable league to one of its most unpredictable.

Of those top sides, Inter Milan have come closest to shedding the "very good" label in favor of a "great." They've won the league twice in the last four years and, if results hold, they'll win it again this year.

On the continent, they have a Champions League final run on their resume, too, proving that they can win at every level. They're Italy's model club. No team in the world wants to face Inter.

They'll get another chance to showcase that in the Club World Cup. Their Champions League successes put them in a position to go toe-to-toe with the game's elite. Led by stars all over the field, Inter will head to the United States this summer with both belief and expectations. This is a team that can win, one that has the talent, experience and mentality to go out and beat anyone in their path.

The 2025 FIFA Club World Cup will be played in 12 stadiums in 11 U.S. cities, from the opener on June 14 until the final on July 13. In the U.S., fans can stream or watch matches on DAZN or TNT. Leading up to kickoff, GOAL will provide scouting reports on each of the 32 participating teams in the expanded field.

Next up is Inter Milan with a look at key players to watch, and expectations for the Italian side at the tournament.

Inter were agonizingly close to lifting the Champions League trophy, and qualifying for this tournament directly, in 2022-23, having previously won a domestic cup double in Italy. Their dreams of a treble, though, were dashed by Manchester City in Istanbul, as a Rodri goal ensured the Premier League side would claim the trophy in a narrow 1-0 win.

Even without that win, Inter did enough to qualify for the Club World Cup based on their Champions League successes. They were the fourth-best ranked eligible team in UEFA's four-year ranking, giving them one of the nine bids reserved for Europe's non-Champion League winners.

Getty ImagesThe player to watch

Inter has no shortage of starpower, but Lautaro Martinez is the player in the team bordering on superstar status. He's often been a subject of criticism despite his seemingly endless flurries of Serie A goals, but it seems that much of that is behind him.

He was the catalyst behind Argentina's Copa America win last summer and, now back with Inter, he's only built on that with yet another 20-goal season in Italy.

The 27-year-old striker is right up there among the best in the world and, when you have a forward of that quality, you'll have a chance in every game. Lautaro doesn't have to carry Inter, but he can be the difference – as he has been for both club and country over the last 12 months.

The first hurdle should be relatively easy as Inter are massive favorites in Group E. Playing Monterrey in California will feel like something of an away game, and River Plate should certainly give Inter a test. But realistically, it would be shocking if the Serie A contenders didn't come out on top of Group E.

After the group stage, they'll match up with a team from Group F, arguably the tournament's weakest, which really opens up the door to a quarterfinal run. At that point, only heavyweights will remain, but reaching the quarters seems very manageable for this Inter team.

From there, who knows? This is a team that has proven it can win big games and could very well contend for the trophy.
