Liverpool Green-Light £208k-p/w "One-Man War Machine" Deal

Liverpool have told Real Madrid that they would be happy to sign Aurelien Tchouameni on either a loan or permanent basis this summer, according to reports.

What's the latest on Tchouameni to Liverpool?

The France international only arrived at the Bernabeu Stadium from AS Monaco ten months ago and has hugely impressed during his 44 appearances to date, becoming Carlo Ancelotti's top-performing defensive player statistically, but before putting pen to paper in Spain, the 23-year-old could have easily been on his way to the Premier League.

Back in May 2022, Fabrizio Romano revealed that Liverpool were battling it out against Paris Saint-Germain to sign the Los Blancos star following his departure from Monaco, with both clubs "on it", but they failed to secure his services as he made the decision to join the La Liga giants, though it sounds like he is still firmly on the radar of Jurgen Klopp.

According to 90min, Liverpool have "informed" Real Madrid that they are "willing" to sign Tchouameni if he was to become available ahead of the 2023/24 campaign. The Merseyside outfit remain "interested" in a deal for the midfielder and are very much "huge fans" of the qualities that he possesses. Ancelotti currently does "not intend" on letting him go, but even if a permanent deal wasn't on the table, FSG would still be keen to take him on loan.

Real Madrid midfielder Aurelien Tchouameni.

Are Liverpool right to test the waters for Tchouameni?

Liverpool are clearly extremely interested in Tchouameni in order to be making a second attempt to get him on board and it's no surprise, considering that he's been dubbed a "one-man war machine" by talent scout Jacek Kulig, so the board are 100% correct to be checking if there's any way they can pull off a deal in the summer.

The World Cup participant is naturally a defensive midfielder which is proven by him ranking in the 99th percentile for interceptions and winning 36 of his tackles made from 55 players challenged since the start of the season, the second-highest success rate throughout the whole of his squad, as per FBRef.

The £208k-per-week gem, who has the versatility to operate slightly higher up in central midfield alongside his natural position sitting just in front of the backline, also has four assists to his name this term so is capable of contributing to his team's efforts at the opposite end of the pitch, making him the perfect candidate to put pen to paper at Anfield.

Northamptonshire strengthened their position in the 30 overs that were possible on the second day of the Specsavers County Championship match against Sussex at Arundel.Captain Alex Wakely batted through the morning session for his unbeaten 46 as Northants reached 142 for 2, just 36 behind Sussex’s first-innings 178. Rain set in during the afternoon and got steadily heavier and umpires Ben Debenham and Steve O’Shaughnessy abandoned play for the day at 5.10pm.Northants lost just one wicket in the action that was possible when Ajmal Shahzad had opener Ben Duckett caught at second slip by Chris Nash for 72, driving at a pitched-up delivery. The left-hander had added 94 for the second wicket with Wakely and took his first-class aggregate to 718 runs with his fifth 50-plus score of the season.Wakely had a scare on 17 when he edged Steve Magoffin just out of the diving Nash’s reach but otherwise batted solidly in difficult light. Wakely was joined by Rob Keogh in an undefeated third-wicket stand of 26 as Northants reached 142 for 2 at lunch when the rain arrived.

£20m Monster Could Be Rangers’ Morelos Replacement

Glasgow Rangers head coach Michael Beale is set to be in the market for a new number nine this summer to replace current forward Alfredo Morelos.

The head coach recently confirmed that the Colombian international, whose contract expires at the end of this month, will be leaving Ibrox, saying:

“Morelos is moving on. I think you saw the difference in energy in the forward area when Morelos came on. And not in a positive way. We'll need a focal point to the team, for sure."

In the same interview, the boss lamented his team consistently missing "incredible chances" and this indicates that the Englishman wants to add a clinical edge to his side next season.

Who could replace Alfredo Morelos at Rangers?

Beale could find an upgrade on Morelos and a player who provides excellent finishing by securing a swoop to sign Coventry centre-forward Viktor Gyokeres this summer.

Glasgow Rangers striker Alfredo Morelos.

Earlier this month, Football Insider reported that the Light Blues have enquired about a potential deal to sign the £20m-rated attacker as Beale is said to be a big fan of the ex-Brighton prospect.

How has Gyokeres done this season?

In the Championship, the Swedish international has scored 21 goals from 16.08 xG (expected goals) and this means that the dynamo has found the back of the net 4.92 times more than expected based on the chances his teammates provided him with. Whereas, Morelos scored 11 goals from nine xG in the Scottish Premiership – two more than expected.

Coventry's star man has overachieved his xG and scored ten more than the Colombian marksman to date, which indicates that Gyokeres would be an upgrade on the departing Gers forward in terms of the finishing quality he can provide.

The 24-year-old goal machine could offer more creativity than Morelos in the final third to go along with his goalscoring.

He has racked up 10.16 xA and 1.84 key passes per 90 in comparison to the 26-year-old's 4.81 and 1.62, which means that the Championship bulldozer has opened up opposition defences on a more regular basis for his teammates.

Gyokeres could also provide a focal point at the top end of the pitch as the goal machine has won 6.2 battles per game in the English second flight, whilst the Light Blues attacker has only won 1.9 duels per outing in the Scottish Premiership, and this shows that the Coventry gem can compete with defenders and put himself about in physical contests, thus preventing the other team from easily winning possession back off the number nine.

Taking all of this into account, the Swedish phenomenon – whose ability was hailed as "unbelievable" by his manager Mark Robins – could be a big upgrade on Morelos due to his clinical finishing, creative output, and his willingness to do the dirty work, which is why Beale must work hard to secure a deal this summer.

Root's hunger bodes well for England

Joe Root was determined to right the wrongs of his Lord’s performance and his 10-hour effort at Old Trafford could be a defining moment in his career

George Dobell23-Jul-2016Of all the revealing moments in Joe Root’s innings, it was perhaps the irritated swish of the bat upon his dismissal that was most revealing. We have become accustomed to Root displaying frustration in such circumstances. He came into this game having converted just one of his previous eight scores of 50 into a century at Test level, after all, and having suffered what he described as “two poor dismissals” at Lord’s.But this time he had scored 254. He had batted for more than 10 hours. He had registered the 15th highest score in England’s Test history and the third highest by an England No. 3. He had shown he had learned all the lessons from Lord’s – his first Test in his new role of No. 3 – and batted his side to a dominant position. You would think he might feel quite pleased with himself. But instead he was frustrated. Frustrated at the manner of his dismissal and frustrated to tear himself away from the fun.Such an insatiable desire for runs bodes well for Root and England. It suggests that, after a phase of his career where he has been content to produce attractive cameos and fluent half-centuries, he is developing the hardness to complement his talent. The discipline to maximise it and make it count. The hunger that has been a characteristic of the most successful – not necessarily the most talented – batsmen in Test history.Root knows that scores of 70 rarely win Tests. They might on occasions but, generally, on surfaces such as this, they are insufficient. He knows, too, that this team need more from him. They are a bit too flaky, a bit too fragile for him flirt and flicker. He is required to provide substantial contributions. So, after the setback at Lord’s, he returned to the nets and worked on minimising risk. He reminded himself to play straighter, leave more outside off stump and make a point of rolling his wrists on any pulls or slog-sweeps to ensure the ball was played into the ground. If that meant some strokes brought singles rather than boundaries, that was fine.”I wanted to nullify those Lord’s dismissals from my game,” Root said. “That’s why I was so revved up when I reached 200. It seemed like reward for all the hard work. It was pleasing to make one count.”Some context is required for this innings. It has come on another disappointingly slow pitch, for sure. But it has also come against a fine attack with Mohammad Amir bowling far better than his figures suggest and a legspinner who is both No. 1 in the Test bowling rankings and who claimed 10-wickets against England in the previous Test on a pitch that offered him little better. Let’s not always find reasons to diminish excellence. Brian Lara’s two highest scores were made on flat tracks; Matthew Hayden’s 380 against a modest attack. This was a fine innings from a special young player. Don’t be fooled by how easy he made it look.Joe Root takes in the standing ovation for his innings•Getty Images

It was arguably England’s best innings from a No. 3 batsman for almost six years. Perhaps since Jonathan Trott’s 168 not out against Australia in Melbourne in late 2010 or maybe his 184 in the famously overshadowed Test against an excellent Pakistan attack at Lord’s earlier the same year. By comparison, Nick Compton contributed 296 runs in the seven Tests (13 innings) he played in his second spell in the side as England’s No. 3.The key difference between this England innings and the two at Lord’s was not the bowling or the pitch. Neither are as different as the scorecards might suggest. The key difference was the English batting. While at Lord’s England were impatient and ill-disciplined, here they – or at least Root and Alastair Cook – played straighter and left better outside off stump. That drew the sting out of the Pakistan bowlers and exploited the dangers of playing a four-man attack in back-to-back Tests. Root, in particular, did his demanding batting on the first day and reaped the rewards on the second. He has so many strokes – Grant Flower, the Pakistan batting coach, described him as “brilliant” after play – that he will rarely be bogged down. And, if there were times he seemed to settle for accumulation rather than savagery, that should probably be interpreted as maturity. Sachin and Bradman didn’t always thrash boundaries; they appreciated the value of low risk, long-term batting. Just about all the greats have.”He made it look simple, left a lot and played the patience game,” Flower said. “And he has great shots to go with that.”Odd though it sounds, Root’s problem in recent months may have been that his form was almost too good. With so much time and so many strokes, his issues have come more with choosing his options rather than being dismissed by deliveries too good for him. In this innings at least – and as he pointed out, he is only three innings into his new role so it is too early to make conclusions – he restricted himself to safer strokes and high-percentage options. James Vince could learn much from watching Root’s development. The identities of those involved the last time two of England’s top three made centuries in a Test innings is revealing. They were Nick Compton and Trott (and New Zealand were the opposition in early 2013); two men who focused on crease occupation first and fluency second. For the first time in some months, England’s top-order took a similar approach in this innings with Root showing that he was quickly adapting to the differing demands of batting at No. 3.Trott always had some reservations about batting at No. 3. He felt that No. 4 was his natural position – he continues to bat there for Warwickshire – and felt that coming in a place higher up the order made far more difference that is generally appreciated. It forced him, he believed, to leave more balls and bat with a more defensive mindset. Having done it for a while, he was no longer able to rediscover the fluency.Maybe it was the same with Root here? Having made an effort to tighten up on day one – to leave more balls and play straighter – he struggled to find another gear when the time came to accelerate. He wasn’t bogged down, exactly, but he could not match the fluency of Chris Woakes in the morning or Jonny Bairstow in the afternoon. But if the new Root is a slightly less flamboyant spectacle, it will be a price worth paying for England. For too long – since Trott’s decline and barring Gary Ballance’s bright start – England have been reliant upon their long middle-order to help them to reasonable totals.Root’s promotion promises to stop the rot before it starts and provide the middle order with the protection it requires to flourish. And this innings, coming after one Test where he struggled to adapt to the different demands of the No. 3 position, suggests he is learning fast. It’s still premature to call him a great batsman, but he may be the closest thing to an English-born one since Graham Gooch and David Gower. And, by the end of his career, we may well have to go much further back than that to find his equal.

Arsenal: "World Class" Signing Now "Closer To Completion"

Arsenal talks to sign West Ham United star Declan Rice are "closer to completion" as a report shares some promising news out of north London.

What's the latest Arsenal transfer news?

The Premier League title charge appears all but gone, as rivals Man City look almost set to seal domestic glory soon and could well do it this weekend against Chelsea.

Regardless of results around them, victory over the Stamford Bridge side would seal Pep Guardiola's third-successive English title, with City firmly in pole position.

That being said, you could make a compelling case for this campaign being a success for Arsenal overall, as Champions League football is guaranteed for 2023/2024 – a marked improvement on 21/22.

Arsenal transfer chief Edu is now tasked with building upon 2023 and mounting another title challenge, with the club reliably believed to be targeting major signings in key positions.

Arteta is reportedly after additions in defence, leading to links with Crystal Palace's Marc Guehi, as well as reinforcements further forward.

However, their biggest priority appears to be signing a central midfield star, with both Rice and Brighton star Moises Caicedo being heavily linked with a move to Arsenal.

The former especially, and a report by Football Transfers has shared quite a promising update on Edu's pursuit.

The outlet, and journalist Steve Kay, have dropped a line near the bottom of a piece detailing that transfer talks for Rice are "closer to completion" – with the West Ham midfielder looking "more and more likely" to make his move across London.

This may come as a big boost for Arteta as the Spaniard chases more steel for his midfield, despite the signing of former Chelsea ace Jorginho in January.

Who is Declan Rice?

The England international has been heavily courted by top sides for a while, with West Ham boss David Moyes quoting £150 million for him last summer.

Rice, who's been called "world class" by media members, could be one of the next transfer window's hottest commodities as he continues to come on leaps and bounds under Moyes.

As per WhoScored, the 24-year-old ranks as West Ham's star player overall in the top flight, averaging their highest match rating per 90.

He also makes more interceptions per 90 than any other Hammers star, backing how he could add some defensive solidarity to Arsenal's midfield.

News of the Gunners edging closer to his capture is excellent, yet reports suggest he will also be very costly.

Nevill defends delayed stumping

Peter Nevill has defended his delayed stumping of Dimuth Karunaratne on day four of the Colombo Test match, while Sri Lanka have indicated they would have done the same

Daniel Brettig16-Aug-2016Australia’s wicketkeeper Peter Nevill has defended his delayed stumping of Dimuth Karunaratne on day four of the Colombo Test match, while Sri Lanka have indicated they would have done the same.Nevill successfully appealed for Karunaratne’s wicket after hovering with his glove next to the stumps as he waited for the batsman to switch his feet and momentarily leave the crease, following a Nathan Lyon delivery that had beaten the bat.The dismissal was cause for a range of reactions, with some questioning the dismissal’s acceptability in the spirit of cricket. However, Nevill had absolutely no qualms about claiming the wicket, saying it reflected the simple reality that batsmen needed to stay in their crease.”I thought he was going to move his foot out of his crease and he did,” Nevill said. “You might’ve seen on the footage, I had my hand right by the stumps waiting for that to happen, and it did happen and just worked out well that the timing was just right that it was out.”Well there’s always people who are going to say something like that [it went against the spirit of the game] but I don’t think it’s contrary to the spirit of cricket. If you don’t want to get stumped stay in your crease. You can sort of see, a shifting of weight and you’re expecting the back foot to come up. That’s the hunch I had and that’s what happened. Just managed to get the bails off in time.”Nevill said he had been able to dismiss a batsman in that manner at least once before, in a second XI match. Footage of other similar dismissals effected by Alec Stewart against Brian Lara and Sri Lanka’s Romesh Kaluwitharana against Darren Lehmann emerged over the course of the day.”It’s happened a few times, in a second XI game in Australia there was one where the guy jumped after he played his shot,” Nevill said. “I know Hadds [Brad Haddin] has tried to do it a million times as well, so I think that’s rubbed off on me.”Sri Lanka batsman Kaushal Silva said his side would take the opportunity if roles were reversed. “We don’t know if we will get a chance to effect that kind of dismissal, but if we do, we would have to take that opportunity,” he said. “I don’t see it as a wrong thing. But you can’t also take wickets in a way that is against the spirit of the sport. That said, there’s no problem if it’s done the right way.”

Wolves Could Have To Pay Around £30m For Signing

Wolves could have to pay approximately £30m to sign Fiorentina right-back Dodo in the summer transfer window, according to a new update.

Had Dodo had a good season?

Wanderers have an important summer ahead of them, as they look to improve upon what has been a fairly underwhelming Premier League campaign. Granted, Julen Lopetegui has come in and steadied the ship, but it is vital that they both keep hold of the manager and bring in some top-quality signings at the end of the campaign.

One player who is reportedly a target for Wolves is Dodo, with a rumour earlier this week suggesting that they are considering making a move for him. The 24-year-old has been a regular for Fiorentina this season, appearing 28 times in Serie A and making five appearances in the Coppa Italia, but a new challenge could appeal to him in the summer.

The Brazilian's current deal doesn't expire until 2027, however, so it may be that Wolves and other potential suitors are unable to sign him on the cheap. In fact, news of his valuation has now emerged, giving Wanderers an idea of the fee needed to prise him away.

How much could Dodo cost Wolves?

According to TuttoMercatoWeb [via Sport Witness], Dodo is "one of the best" full-backs in Serie A currently and would cost Wolves between €30-35m (£26-30m) this summer. While they aren't specifically mentioned in this new report, they are least aware of his price tag now.

The Fiorentina man could be a really astute signing by Wanderers before the start of next season, coming in and adding both quality and squad depth. He could provide competition for Nelson Semedo at right-back, assuming the Portuguese stays put, and at 24, he would be coming in as a younger alternative to him.

Dodo registered 17 assists in 97 appearances for Shakhtar Donetsk during his time there, highlighting his attacking ability from full-back, wile he also a total of 18 caps across three different age groups for Brazil (five for the Under-23s, 11 for the Under-20s and two for the Under-17s).

The price tag mentioned doesn't exactly feel extortionate for someone who is a regular for a Serie A team, so Wolves could be wise to make a move for him, even though Newcastle United's interest could scupper the situation, given their promise of Champions League football next season, making this one to watch.
