Wolves Could Sign Talented "Prospect" In £17m Swoop

Wolverhampton Wanderers are in pursuit for a goalscorer this summer, with Sporting CP forward Youssef Chermiti rising as a potential grab.

Julen Lopetegui must recruit a competent striker in the transfer window, to avoid a repeat of last season’s record of being the lowest-scorers in the Premier League.

Could Youssef Chermiti sign for Wolves?

As reported by Portuguese outlet Record, Wolves hold an interest in Chermiti, who graduated from the club’s academy last campaign.

The report claims that scouts were present in Sporting’s pre-season game against Genk, amid rumours of the Old Gold’s curiosities over the striker.

Despite having a contract running until 2027 with a release clause believed to be in the region of €80m (£69m), the teenager could leave for a figure of €20m (£17m) this summer according to the report.

How good is Youssef Chermiti?

After rising through the ranks at Sporting, the 19-year-old finally made the step from the club’s B team to the first team in January.

Following his promotion, the centre-forward was handed a refreshed contract in February after showcasing just what he can do if given a licence to lead the line.

In his first three starts, the teen scored two goals and registered an assist, getting his senior career off to a bang in Liga Portugal.

Donning a dominating 6 foot 4 frame, the striker could be the ideal addition to the squad at Molineux, providing far more than just an aerial threat.

Described as a “superb prospect” by talent scout Jacek Kulig, the forward could be the perfect presence to unlock Wolves’ attack, after the side managed to score just 31 goals in 38 games last term.

A "very interesting" talent hungry to achieve, according to Kulig, the 19-year-old could be introduced as the target man in the Midlands, particularly following the departure of striker Raul Jimenez.

While the teenager is still a name people are learning in Europe, one player in Wolverhampton is already familiar with his ability, with Matheus Nunes being his former teammate at Sporting.

Youssef-chermiti-sporting

Signed from Lisbon by Wolves last summer, the attacking midfielder is yet to show his full potential at Molineux, however has shown glimpses of just the threat he could be in the Premier League.

For Nunes, Chermiti could be the ideal player for him to unearth his creative ability in England, in a talent that could suit his approach to playmaking.

In Portugal, the 24-year-old averaged 4.37 final third passes compared to his 2.55 per 90 in the Premier League last season, via FBref, suggesting that there is much more of his game to unlock in the Midlands.

In having a prominent figure to target in the final third through Chermiti, the Portuguese gem could elevate his game in playing with a talent he is familiar with.

As per The Scouting App, the teenager is described as a ‘pure striker’, with strengths in his physicality and ‘explosiveness’, proposing that he could be an added streak of much-needed energy up-front for Wolves.

The youngster's enthusiasm and ‘eccentricity’, as credited by The Scouting App, could prompt the likes of Nunes to explore areas of his creative game more confidently, as he continues to adapt in the English top tier.

South Africa steady themselves after Lord's horror show

South Africa needed a response after their 211-run defeat in the first Test at Lord’s and the memories were put behind them on an evenly-contested opening day at Trent Bridge

The Report by David Hopps14-Jul-2017
Scorecard and ball-by-ball detailsSouth Africa needed a response after their 211-run defeat in the first Test of the series at Lord’s and the memories of their second-innings collapse were put behind them on an evenly-contested opening day at Trent Bridge.Nevertheless, it might have been even better. The loss of four wickets for 56 runs in 15 overs immediately after tea – an interval during which South Africa had been excellently placed at 179 for 2 – was a haphazard period which invited England back into the second Investec Test and rewarded a day in which James Anderson and Stuart Broad, in particular, persisted with an experienced air, drawing help where they could on a slow surface.Anderson became the first Test bowler to reach 300 Test wickets in home Tests, while Broad was the day’s most successful, and insistent, bowler with 3 for 47. As their Test tallies build, and their status as one of England’s most prolific fast-bowling pairs is further implanted, their respective Test averages remain locked around 28.5 as if somehow it has been pre-ordained that it must always be this way.England’s optimism had been tested in an afternoon session in which Hashim Amla and Quinton de Kock took command on an easy-paced pitch, gambolling along at more than four an over as they added 123 between lunch and tea. If Amla possessed the munificence of a warm sun, uncluttered by clouds, alongside him de Kock, promoted to No. 4, was as playful as a sunbeam dancing upon a car windscreen. That sunbeam disappeared instantly after tea – de Kock, on 68, chopping at a length ball from Broad and depositing it into the hands of Alastair Cook at first slip. Amla seemed to have settled back into his orderly routine, but on 78 he succumbed to Broad, too, as a top-edged pull sailed to Mark Wood to deep square leg: a shot where he had been a little flighty more than once.Nobody can fairly claim to have Amla’s measure, but Broad can claim it more than most: he has now dismissed him eight times in Tests and no bowler has achieved as many.Du Plessis and Temba Bavuma both fell to wicketkeeper catches off Ben Stokes and, if Bavuma’s departure was routine, a comfortable catch as he failed to withdraw the bat, the manner of du Plessis’ dismissal will have delighted the England dressing room, and no-one more so than their wicketkeeping coach Bruce French.Du Plessis imagined his review would be successful, knowing the ball had struck his hip, but there was also the merest hint of a glove – umpire Paul Reiffel having made either a brilliant or fortunate decision – and so attention turned to the catch itself, a leaping affair down the leg-side as Bairstow clutched the ball one-handed. He pulled off a similar catch to dismiss Bavuma at Lord’s and in both cases displayed a spring and lightness on his feet that would have been unimaginable a year ago.Vernon Philander drives through the covers during second half-century of the series•Getty Images

After South Africa’s extravagance, came a recovery from the sixth-wicket pair Vernon Philander and Chris Morris, who added 74 to take them to stumps at 309 for 6, and survived the second new ball in the process, the last delivery of the day falling mockingly short of England’s captain Joe Root at second slip. Philander’s flowing off drives stressed that he is a batsman of some quality, one who should not regard his seventh Test half-century as the height of his ambition.Anderson’s 300th Test wicket in England had been a statistical landmark in an otherwise mournful start to the Test with only 23 overs possible on a blustery morning briefly interrupted by a flurry of rain. He wangled the wicket of Dean Elgar, drawing him into an insecure drive at a slightly wide one and winning his wicket courtesy of a fine, diving catch to his right by Liam Dawson at backward point. Elgar, who can be a bit of a stodge when conditions are testing, would have berated himself for that. There was uncertainty for Heino Kuhn, too, who took a blow on the back of the helmet in Wood’s first over. Wood, displaying a hostility at the start of his first spell that he did not quite sustain, beat Kuhn for pace with his fourth delivery and caused the batsman to turn away and take the blow. Earlier, he had also taken a blow on the bottom hand from Broad, discomfort aplenty which was sure to ginger up England’s seamers. The loss of only one wicket by lunch represented decent damage limitation.Kuhn represented England’s one wicket in the afternoon, a wicket well won as he was subjected to a succession of induckers by Broad, in particular, and eventually dragged one on.Less impressive for England was their wasting of two reviews, on either side of lunch, in their anxiety to make progress. They reviewed a rejected lbw appeal against Amla, on 14, the batsman surviving survived courtesy of an inside edge and a front pad outside the line, neither of which had not entered the computation of a clearly enthusiastic bowler, Stokes. Broad, also voracious when it comes to reviews, then lost a review because the ball was too high.Joe Root, a new captain, looked somewhat biddable as both reviews fell on stony ground. On the second occasion, his predecessor in the job, Cook, offered a few quiet words alongside him at slip. Cook might have been just expressing relief that the decision was no longer his, but if he was advising Root to temper first-term ambition with realism it would have been no bad thing.Amla and de Kock dominated the afternoon. Amla started uncertainly and Anderson, in particular, taunted his outside edge and, on 37, forced an edge which fell agonisingly short of Root at second slip.Amla ticked along with leg-side nudges but saved his biggest shots for the square boundaries on the off side. He reached his half-century with a blissful straight six against Liam Dawson, who entered the attack 10 overs before Moeen Ali. A pecking order designed to take the pressure off Moeen might yet put the pressure on England and it could remain a talking point of the summer.De Kock’s insatiable appetite for adventure has made South Africa reluctant to card him in the middle order but they were rewarded for their boldness. Many will regard his promotion as unwise – comparable perhaps to fielding the great Australian wicketkeeping No. 7 Adam Gilchrist up the order – and would certainly argue the case for him to come in behind du Plessis at five. But, for all the misadventure of his get-out shot, there is a roundness to his game that suggests he has the aptitude to cope and his four boundaries in quick succession off Dawson and Wood helped seize the initiative.Anderson’s was not the only statistic of the day. Amla had gone past 8,000 Test runs and another landmark was also marked as the impending retirement of Henry Blofeld, the long-serving Test Match Special commentator, was marked by his very own bus – a green one named in his honour which one hopes will draw highly-coloured bursts of adjectival delight from generations to come. There was also a replica to go with it, presented no less by the Sheriff of Nottingham – a local councillor of upstanding repute, rather than the lecherous Robin Hood villain.

Former West Indies captain Richie Richardson has been appointed match referee by the ICC for the three-match T20 Independence Cup between Pakistan and the World XI side – the first instance since 2009 of an ICC match official overseeing cricket in Pakistan.Richardson has been a member of the ICC’s Elite Panel of match referees since January 2016 and has officiated in 11 Tests, 19 ODIs and 18 T20Is till date. The Pakistan Cricket Board announced the ICC’s decision in a press release on Tuesday. “The Pakistan Cricket Board today announced that the International Cricket Council has appointed Sir Richie Richardson as match referee for the Independence Cup to be played between the World XI and Pakistan at the Gaddafi Stadium on 12, 13 and 15 September.”The ICC has thrown its weight behind this series, working closely with the PCB to tackle security which satisfied the standards of the players’ body, the Federation of International Cricketers’ Associations (FICA).Zimbabwe’s tour in 2015 – the only international tour by a Test-playing team since the terror attack on the Sri Lanka team bus in 2009 – had gone ahead with local umpires and match officials. Prior to Zimbabwe’s tour, several countries had refused to play in Pakistan, in the aftermath of the attack in Lahore. The PCB, however, has been gradually pursuing more matches in the country. Earlier this year, a few international players turned out in Lahore for the final of the Pakistan Super League.

Everton Could Repeat Barry Horne Success With "Dynamic" £22m Gem

Everton managed to narrowly retain their infamous top-flight status last season and could be set to add sufficiently to once again avoid the dreaded drop…

Is Kamaldeen Sulemana joining Everton?

Especially given they have already made solid moves in the market already, welcoming Ashley Young and Arnaut Danjuma to bolster key areas, with Youssef Chermiti set to occupy the much-needed striker role too.

In returning for Villarreal's Dutch wide man, Toffees boss Sean Dyche showcased an ability to forget the past in order to capture those he has had a longstanding interest in.

Read the latest Everton transfer news HERE…

That would therefore explain their reported interest in Southampton's Kamaldeen Sulemana, who opted to move to St Mary's over Goodison Park in January.

Having since been relegated, Football Insider are now suggesting that the Merseyside outfit are once again in talks for his services, seeking to negotiate with the club that paid €25m (£22m) to tempt him last window,

How good is Kamaldeen Sulemana?

Whilst he could not offer enough across those six months to fire the Saints to safety, the 21-year-old livewire did provide a glimpse into the exceptional talents he can bring to English football.

After all, in his last full campaign in France, he posted eight goal contributions across all competitions, before scoring just twice across ten Premier League starts last season.

However, what the skilful winger did bring was far more than just his tangible goalscoring and assisting, as there are few on the continent as consistent when it comes to bypassing defenders with pace and trickery.

When compared to other wide men across Europe, he actually ranks in the top 1% for successful take-ons per 90, as well as the top 18% for interceptions per 90, via FBref.

He pairs electric running with a relentless work rate, as former coach Didi Dramani outlined him as someone capable of earning success in England:

"His strength is coming inside as a wide player. He is very dynamic in his movement, very unpredictable where he wants to go with either foot. When he is in space, he is basically unstoppable in one-on-one situations."

barry-horne

To once again look to Southampton whilst in the midst of a troublesome period for the club, having flirted with the drop for two seasons on the run now, perhaps such an acquisition could be reminiscent of their 1992 signing of Barry Horne.

The Welshman joined having endured a fairly uneventful career, and although his spell on Merseyside was hardly prolific, he did enjoy one particularly important moment that lives long in the memories of fans.

Welcoming AFC Wimbledon on the final day of the 1993/94 season, the Toffees knew that only a win would be enough to preserve their top-flight status.

So, when they found themselves 2-0 down, they likely feared the worst.

Graham Stuart halved the deficit from the spot, but as time ticked on they needed to pull a double from somewhere. Up stepped Horne, who thundered home from 30 yards to bring the scores level, setting up a grandstand finish. Stuart's second would seal the 3-2 win, as they were destined to feature in the Premier League once again.

He would even go on to win the club's 1995 Footballer of the Year award too, helping them win the FA Cup; their latest piece of silverware.

Should Sulemana prove half as heroic as the now 61-year-old Goodison legend, this would be a deal more than worth making, as the famous outfit seek to attain survival until they can make the triumphant move into the new stadium.

76 y/o Roy Hodgson Squares Up To Rival In Crystal Palace Win

Footage has emerged of Crystal Palace manager Roy Hodgson in a touchline confrontation with an opposition player during his team’s most recent match.

What’s the latest on Crystal Palace and Roy Hodgson?

Premier League football is back upon us with the 2022/23 season kicking off this season and it has already delivered an Erling Haaland goalscoring clinic, a Bukayo Saka beauty, and much much more.

However, for all the champagne football and poetry in motion, true football fans always love a little bit of argy-bargy and that’s exactly what we got as Palace travelled away to Sheffield United for their first league match of the new campaign.

Playing at Bramall Lane – with the Blades promoted from the Championship last term – the Eagles managed to pick up a narrow 1-0 victory thanks to a single goal from Odsonne Edouard, which he scored in the 49th minute of the match.

Understandably desperate to cling onto their lead as the minutes dragged on, Hodgson – who turned 76 years old this week – did all he could to help his team pick up the points with a touchline tussle on the hour mark.

And this was beautifully captured in the footage being circulated on Twitter and on Sky Sports’ YouTube channel – which you can see below.

As the ball runs out of play, the former England manager stops it with his foot. Sheffield United defender Max Lowe, who is 26, is first on the scene and ends up in an aggressive confrontation with Hodgson who refused to let him pick the ball up and get on with play.

Crystal Palace podcast host Dan Cook, also known as HLTCO, best summed up the incident on Twitter, saying: “Turned 76 this week and still backing himself against someone 50 years his junior. Don Roy.”

Discussing the incident with talkSPORT after the game, Hodgson said: “I don’t think he meant to catch me, chasing the ball to the side. We both smiled about it. My first reaction of course when I received the blow was complain. But I think it was a pure accident, it was nothing.”

Is Roy Hodgson staying at Crystal Palace?

Hodgson only returned back at Palace last season in March – two years after leaving – to help guide the club to safety after things had taken a turn for the worse under Patrick Vieira.

He did a fine job as he led the Eagles to an 11th-placed finish in the league and has kept his job over the summer, as confirmed by the Selhurst Park outfit in July.

He will remain in charge for the 2023/24 season and seems very up for the job – as evidenced by the footage above.

On being confirmed in his current role, he said in a statement shared on the Crystal Palace website: “I am immensely pleased and proud to be extending my time at Crystal Palace, and I would like to thank the Chairman and Sporting Director for their continued faith in me.

“I know what a fantastic squad we have here. It’s a great blend of youth and potential, alongside experienced players with Premier League and international pedigree.

“I have spoken with the Chairman at length and we agreed that we must be ambitious in getting the most out of such talent. As such, we have set ourselves the target of a top-half finish, which we believe is eminently achievable with such a fabulous group of players and the most magnificent supporters who get behind the team, week in, week out.”

A informação inicial é do jornal “O Dia”.

Imam-ul-Haq called up to Pakistan's ODI squad

Pakistan have left out former ODI captain Azhar Ali from their squad for the upcoming series against Sri Lanka in the UAE

Umar Farooq06-Oct-20170:51

Who is Imam-ul-Haq?

Pakistan have, unsurprisingly, kept faith with much of the squad that won them the Champions Trophy but with a couple of notable changes. They have left out former ODI captain Azhar Ali for the upcoming series against Sri Lanka in the UAE and included the uncapped batsman Imam-ul-Haq. Imam is the nephew of former captain and current chairman of selectors Inzamam-ul-Haq.Pakistan squad

Ahmed Shehzad, Fakhar Zaman, Mohammad Hafeez, Babar Azam, Shoaib Malik, Sarfraz Ahmed (capt), Imad Wasim, Shahdab Khan, Faheem Ashraf, Hasan Ali, Mohammed Amir, Ruman Raees, Junaid Khan, Haris Sohail, Imam-ul-Haq

Relieved of the captaincy, Azhar played some of his most assured ODI innings in the tournament, including fifties in the semi-final and final. But the knee problem that almost ruled him out of the Test series is one selectors want to rest. That is one of the reasons Imam, an opener, has been brought into the squad.Imam, 21, has been on the selectors’ radar for a few seasons now, especially when he was selected in the Islamabad side for the 50-over Pakistan Cup in 2016 – filling in for Misbah-ul-Haq. He scored a century in his first game. But questions will be asked about his inclusion on the back of what has been, at best, lukewarm form in the 50-over format. He played four games in the National One-Day Cup in January this year for Lahore Whites and scored only 96 runs (including an innings of 49). A month earlier in a National One-Day Cup for department sides, he scored 318 runs at 35.33 for Habib Bank. Over the last three years, Imam has played 24 List A games; in the last 10 months, he has played 13 matches, scoring 414 at 31.84.According to some board officials, in the past Inzamam had expressed reluctance in pushing Imam into the national fold – in one of his first selections ahead of the England tour last year, he said: “I’ve seen his [Imam’s] first-class record, he hasn’t scored many runs in this season and I have not selected him. That should be the way.”It would seem that has changed over the last year. “If you say he is my nephew then it was difficult,” Inzamam said of the selection in Dubai on the first day of the second Test between Pakistan and Sri Lanka. “But if you look at his performances then I thought it’s ok. We wanted to keep the Champions Trophy team, to continue that, but unfortunately Azhar has a knee injury through which we had to bring an opener up. In my view, of all the openers who have performed recently, he was pretty good in that and deserves the pick.”The performances Inzamam spoke of have mostly been in the four-day game. Imam scored 848 runs at 49.88 in the last Quaid-e-Azam trophy, with three hundreds, including a double-century, for Habib Bank Limited. He has opened this season with a hundred for Habib Bank as well, against FATA at the end of last month.”We have to see what the talent is, what he can do,” Inzamam said. “His performances in the QeA everyone can see. He scored two hundreds in an U-23 tournament. Then recently in Sialkot he scored a hundred, so we look at performances but also how much talent a player has. Mickey [Arthur] and Sarfraz [Ahmed] and others were also involved in this decision. We give all the names but there is a discussion. So it would be better to not look at this selection in that way.”
