England coach Trevor Bayliss frustrated by players' 'dumb' decisions

The England team “have to be smarter” about how they go about life off the field, the coach said, in the wake of the latest controversy to surround the team

England players have made ‘dumb’ decisions – Bayliss

The England team “have to be smarter” about how they go about life off the field, the coach Trevor Bayliss had said.Bayliss was clearly angry and disappointed after allegations of an altercation involving Jonny Bairstow emerged at the end of the fourth day of the first Ashes Test in Brisbane. While the incident itself turned out to be more of an oddity than an altercation – Bairstow greeted Cameron Bancroft with a well-meaning but somewhat bizarre headbutt when they saw each other in a Perth bar almost a month ago; the pair then enjoyed a few drinks together – Bayliss was disappointed that it appeared to have destabilised his side and increased pressure upon them in a series which has started with a defeat.Although Bayliss confirmed that Bairstow had not broken any curfew and that there would be no disciplinary action against him, he suggested his players had made some “dumb decisions” in recent times and admitted there would be a review of the team’s self-imposed code of conduct. The introduction of curfews and, perhaps, a ban on alcohol, might have to be considered.”It has given not just the Australian team but the media the chance to get involved with stuff other than cricket,” Bayliss said. “That’s the disappointing thing and that’s what we’ve got to be better at. We can’t put ourselves in these situations however small they are. It’s a distraction.”We want to get on with the cricket. But it has given the opposition ammunition to put pressure on as well. We are here to play cricket and we have to find a way to play as well as we can and have no distractions from outside that.”There was no malice in it and Jonny did not break the code of conduct we had in place before this [but] I’m sure there will be a review of that. Probably we will tighten up curfews. I’m sure there will be further discussion between management and players.”We have to be smarter. Most people like going out at night for couple of quiet ones, but you have to be careful you don’t do anything stupid. If that means not having anything to drink then so be it.”The irritation for Bayliss is that the incident occurred so soon after the Ben Stokes episode. Already missing his team’s key all-rounder, he was shocked there should be further unnecessary drama on the first night of the tour.”You can head out [in the evening], but obviously not be stupid,” Bayliss said. “That’s the disappointing thing, we make dumb decisions at different times.”Yes, I thought players’ behaviour would change after Bristol as well. They would be extra dumb and stupid if it didn’t.”It was clear, however, that Bayliss did not blame the Australian team for taking the opportunity to “get under Jonny’s skin” suggesting England would probably have done the same thing in their position. Indeed, they certainly did so after David Warner hit Joe Root in a Birmingham bar.”They probably mentioned it to get under Jonny’s skin,” Bayliss said, “as I’m sure we might have done a few years ago in England.”It’s an opportunity. Any team will take any opportunity to get stuck into the opposition and make them feel uncomfortable wherever possible. If you put yourself in that situation, you are fair game. We have to be careful we don’t do that in future.”

Klinger out of BBL for indefinite period

The Perth Scorchers opener is set to be away for an indefinite period this season after his wife was diagnosed with breast cancer

Perth Scorchers opener Michael Klinger is set to miss an indefinite period of the Big Bash League after his wife was diagnosed with breast cancer.Cindy Klinger received the shock diagnosis this week following a scan to investigate some ongoing back pain.Klinger, who is the BBL’s all-time leading run-scorer and a key member of the Scorchers side, will not play until further notice in order to support his wife and three children.”Last week, my wife Cindy had a routine scan on her back, which had been causing her pain and no physiotherapy or anti-inflammatory tablets seemed to help,” Klinger told the newspaper. “The result of that scan completely shocked and devastated us. Doctors identified three spots on her vertebrae that required further investigation — within hours we were told she had cancer.”Playing cricket, right at this moment, is secondary. It still may happen, because Cindy wants me to play and says it will be a good distraction for her and the kids to see me do so, either on TV or at The Furnace. But, by my choice, if playing clashes with any appointments or treatments, or if Cindy or the kids need me, I will be by their side.”Klinger, 37, made 334 runs in last year’s tournament including an unbeaten 71 in the final to help guide the Scorchers to their third title. His outstanding tournament saw him picked for his long-awaited T20 international debut against Sri Lanka. While the Scorchers’ title defence is of relatively little importance compared to the battle the Klinger and his family faces, coach Justin Langer does have a tricky task in trying to replace his talisman at the top of the order. The Scorchers were already thin in the batting stocks for the first part of the tournament due to the absence of Shaun Marsh, Mitchell Marsh and Cameron Bancroft who are on Test duty. Shaun Marsh has been Klinger’s preferred opening partner when available.Sam Whiteman filled the role late in the tournament last year to great effect. But Whiteman is unavailable for the entire tournament due to a long-term finger injury.Klinger looked set to open with England international David Willey, who has made two centuries opening for Northants and Yorkshire in the T20 Blast in England. Willey made 37 in quick time in the Scorchers’ practice match against the England Lions at the new Perth Stadium last week. He will likely open in the Scorchers’ season opener against the Sydney Sixers on Saturday night at the SCG.The options to partner him include wicketkeeper Josh Inglis and emerging Western Australian batsman Josh Philippe. Inglis is a versatile right-hander who has opened in List A matches for the Cricket Australia XI. He averages 31 in List A cricket at a strike-rate of 110 with three half-centuries. Hilton Cartwright could also potentially fill the role.Philippe has bolted to prominence this season after clubbing 88 off 92 balls for a Western Australian XI against England’s attack in a two-day tour game in November.

Everton Now Back "In Talks" To Sign "Electric" £25m Target By 11pm Deadline

Everton supporters will has raised from their seats after breaking deadline day news that manager Sean Dyche is pushing to sign a top summer transfer target after previously giving up the pursuit.

What's the latest on Wilfried Gnonto to Everton?

According to Sky Sports News, Everton are "back in talks" with Leeds United for the signing of "primary transfer target" Wilfried Gnonto before tonight's 11pm deadline, having failing with four transfer offers earlier in the window, the last of which was more than £25m.

The Whites, who were relegated from the Premier League last season, were rocked when the precocious Italy international handed in a transfer request earlier in August, but have maintained their stance that he is not for sale.

Read the latest Everton transfer news HERE…

However, the Toffees are now pushing to swipe the starlet at the eleventh hour, and will likely lodge a fifth official bid in the dying embers of the market.

How good is Wilfried Gnonto?

The 19-year-old joined Leeds from Swiss side FC Zurich for £4m last summer and impressed with his dynamism and directness across the forward line, proving to be a bright spark in a dreary, bleak campaign.

It may be late in the transfer window, but Everton will hope perseverance will pay off and the outfit will secure the signature of a prodigious talent to eradicate the concerns of relegation this season; if at first you don't succeed, as they say.

Hailed as an "absolute nightmare for defenders" by talent scout Jacek Kulig, Gnonto has already earned 12 caps for Italy after dazzling with his natural qualities, having posted four goals and assists apiece for the Elland Road last side as they plummeted into the second tier.

FBref also ranks the "pocket rocket" – as praised by pundit Tam McManus – among the top 19% of attacking midfielders and wingers across Europe's top five leagues over the past year for assists, the top 17% for progressive carries, the top 21% for tackles and the top 4% for blocks per 90.

Given his creativity, driving presence down the offensive channels and defensive application, as evidenced by the above-mentioned metrics, Gnonto could have a transformative effect on Dyche's side, who have lost their opening three matches of the Premier League campaign and are yet to score a league goal – also finishing the 2022/23 term as the division's second-lowest scorers.

Centre-forward Beto has been signed from Serie A side Udinese in a deal worth up to £30m, with the Portuguese talisman hailed a "freak of nature" by Tactically Matt for his brutish physicality and domineering residence in the attacking box.

While not the most prolific of forwards, Beto has entered double-digits across each of the past four league campaigns, with his consistency and ability to "spook defenders", as has been said by journalist Sam Tighe, exactly what the Toffees need.

Also lauded for his "electric pace" by Kulig, Gnonto could be the dream partner for the 6 foot 4 striker, utilising his talents to weave through the lines and break the defensive resolve, homing his creativity to serve as a reliable outlet for the towering Beto.

It would be a remarkable end to the transfer window, and could well extinguish some of the malaise that has seeped into the blue half of Merseyside over the past few years.

Dyche will need to act fast, but by pouncing incisively, Everton could land a talent capable of spearheading a route out of the abyss that has engulfed the club of late.

Spurs: Levy "on the verge" of signing "top talent" who only wants Tottenham

Tottenham Hotspur have not wasted any time before getting going under Ange Postecoglou, who has got off to a near perfect start at the club. Having endured fairly uninspiring football from the likes of Nuno Espirito Santo and Antonio Conte, the Lilywhites are now one of the most interesting sides to watch in the Premier League.

The summer transfer window certainly left them in an interesting position, and without Harry Kane, you worried about them. Yet, after four games, only Manchester City have won more points than their ten, having even defeated Manchester United along the way.

Now, they are set to strengthen further, despite the transfer window slamming shut earlier this month, with a centre-back coming through the doors of Hotspur Way.

What's the latest Spurs transfer news?

james-maddison-tottenham-hotpsur-ange-postecoglou-sarr-rodrigo-bentancur-injury

Losing Kane for a reported £105m to Bayern Munich in the summer, Spurs have invested their money well, welcoming the likes of Micky van de Ven, Brennan Johnson and standout player James Maddison, who already has four goal involvements in five games for the club in all competitions.

Among all the positives, though, Postecoglou actually suffered a late blow to his squad depth when Davinson Sanchez lef the club to join Galatasaray after the closure of the English transfer window, leaving Spurs short on defensive options. But it appears that's not the only out-of-window business, as Postecoglou now looks to the future.

According to Fabrizio Romano, Spurs are "on the verge" of signing the Croatian centre-back Luka Vusković on a five-year deal, fending off interest from five other clubs in the process. The 16-year-old will reportedly make the move from Hajduk Split when he turns 18 in two years, giving him plenty of time to develop even further.

Romano said: "Tottenham are on the verge of signing Croatian CB top talent Luka Vusković! After top project for his development, Vusković only wants Spurs — despite interest from 5 more top clubs. Personal terms agreed, clubs finalising paperwork. Here we go."

Who is Luka Vuskovic?

At 16, Vuskovic stands at 6 foot 4 and could still have room to grow even more, potentially making him a dominant central defender. Despite his age, the Croatian has already made 11 first-team appearances for Hajduk Split, even scoring one goal, and making the bench twice this season.

Given that he is being trusted to feature for the first-team before he's even 18-years-old, it certainly seems as though Spurs have got themselves one to watch for the future.

From the Lilywhites' perspective, they'll be hoping to get a player ready to play a part in their squad once he turns 18, and completes the move once and for all. For now, though, they'll be well aware that he is still very much in the early stages of his career, and gaining first-team experience at Split is more important than ever.

Securing the central defender once again shows how much Spurs have improved off the pitch in such a short space of time. Reportedly beating five other clubs to Vuskovic's signature, the Croatian's arrival represents a major coup for the future.
