Keaton Jennings faces "nervous" wait ahead of Sri Lanka tour – Trevor Bayliss

James Vince, Rory Burns and Joe Denly feature prominently in England’s thoughts ahead of selection meeting

Trevor Bayliss has admitted Keaton Jennings faces a “nervous” wait to see whether he will be included in England’s squad for the tour of Sri Lanka.Jennings averaged just 18.11 in the five-Test series against India and, while Bayliss suggested his decent form on the tour to India a couple of years ago may count in his favour, he declined to confirm that it would be enough to ensure him another tour. With Alastair Cook having retired, England are searching for at least one new top-order batsman and Bayliss confirmed that James Vince, Joe Denly and Rory Burns are all vying for a spot in the squad. Whether Jennings is retained will decide whether England have one or two spots available for them.Ed Smith, the national selector, has previously expressed some confidence in Jennings despite the run of low scores. Pointing out that batting in the top order was treacherously tough during the India series, Smith noted Jennings’ impressive “demeanour” and method and appeared to offer his tour hopes some encouragement. In Jennings’ favour is the fact he made a century on Test debut in Mumbai in December 2016 and followed it with an innings of 54 in Chennai. England expect to encounter similar spinning pitches in Sri Lanka. Those scores are, however, his only half-centuries in a 12-Test career and, in going 10 Tests in succession without passing fifty, he has set a grim new record for an England opening batsman.”We have a selection meeting in a week’s time and I am sure it will be discussed,” Bayliss said. “I’m sure he will be a bit nervous about which way it will go. His history will be in his favour: he scored runs in India on spinning wickets.”But he is a big boy and he knows runs on the board count as well. All of those points will have to be discussed and I can’t say at this stage or another whether he will go or not.”If Jennings is not retained, it could mean a recall for Vince. Although he averages a modest 24.90 after 13 Tests, he averages 30.54 from the No. 3 position. As a result, Bayliss rated him England’s “best No. 3” excluding Joe Root over the last few years. And, having gone back to county cricket and scored heavily in recent months – Vince is the second highest run-scorer in Division One this season behind Burns and is averaging 42.66 – Bayliss said he “had done what we asked of him since he was out of the team”.”If you take Joe out of the equation, Vince has probably been our best No. 3 over the last few years,” Bayliss said. “I gave him the challenge when we dropped him to go back and score plenty of runs. Averaging 40 in county cricket is not good enough. You have got to average 50 or 60 and, take out this last game, he was close to that and made some big hundreds so he has done what we asked of him. Whether he makes the cut or not we will find out in a week.”While Bayliss admitted he had not seen much of Denly, he has had good reports from the team of scouts the England management now employ and confirmed he was being considered for a place in the squad.”I have not seen him in the last couple of years,” Bayliss said. “He has made some runs this year and apparently he is a decent player of spin. He can play the short ball but so can a few others. Vince for example. And obviously Burns is making a lot of runs at The Oval.”I am sure all three guys will get a hearing and there might be more than one spot in the touring party.”Burns is, by a distance, the leading run-scorer in the Championship season. He is approaching the 1,200 run mark – nobody else has made 1,000 – and, while there is a suggestion he has made most of his runs on the flat Oval surfaces, three of his four centuries have come at New Road, Nottingham and Southampton. He also made 90 in Chelmsford and, at the time of writing, averages 95 away from home this season.England expect to announce the limited-overs squad on Monday or Tuesday and the Test squad on the 23rd or 24th. Bayliss returns to Sydney for a brief holiday on Thursday, so will take part in the selection meeting via conference call.

Mohammad Abbas, Fakhar Zaman and Azhar Ali extend Pakistan's dominance

Pakistan tightened their grip on the second Test match after they increased their lead to 281 runs with eight wickets still in hand

The Report by Danyal Rasool17-Oct-2018
Siddle to stay back as T20 cover for hamstrung Starc

Australia’s spearhead Mitchell Starc has complained of tightness in his left hamstring while bowling in the second Test against Pakistan in Abu Dhabi, leaving him in doubt for the T20 series that follows. Peter Siddle, a revelation with the white ball for the Adelaide Strikers in their BBL-winning campaign last summer, will be retained as cover for the T20 matches rather than flying home.
Starc took on a heavy workload in the first Test in Dubai and has looked stiff and sore in the second, bowling only one spell so far in the second innings and also fielding in the slips rather than running round the outfield.

Today was the day all days this series were supposed to be like. With a Pakistan team that has historically been near-invincible in the UAE against an Australian Test unit that was near-unrecognisable, the hosts, at last, dominated in every single facet. Their fast bowlers outbowled Australia’s, their spin bowlers were a class apart, and the batting was in a different league to the visitors’ calamitous effort that they offered this morning. The upshot was Pakistan lead by 281 runs with eight wickets still in hand. With three days remaining in this Test, any fourth-innings batting heroics this time, however Herculean they may be, are unlikely to prevent an Australian defeat.Australia’s only chance of victory lay in turning over Pakistan cheaply, but those hopes were dashed courtesy another deft innings from debutant Fakhar Zaman. This one was more to type, the opener clever enough to understand he would be able to cut loose in the way that’s become his strength, quick runs being the best way to put the game out of Australia’s reach. He put on 66 of them, and looked on track to reach the debut hundred he was so agonisingly denied yesterday. But a stunning catch from Nathan Lyon off his own bowling dashed Fakhar’s hopes. Lyon looked to be taking evasive action after Fakhar struck the ball hard, but the cherry lodged itself in his hands, and Australia could celebrate a fleeting moment of joy.Even Azhar Ali, who had struggled for runs over the past 18 months, found form today, finishing unbeaten on 54 when the day drew to a close. He looked more confident than he has in months, looking more certain when he used his feet. He was also willing to be patient when the bowling grew tight, refusing to yield in the manner he had in two of his three previous innings this series. While Lyon remained – by a distance – Australia’s best bowler, it wasn’t compliments but numbers in the wickets column that Australia needed to feel more hopeful at the end of the second day.For the second time in as many Tests, Pakistan punched big holes in Australia’s middle order, establishing firm control right from the outset. It was Mohammad Abbas, the flavour of this season, who continued to endear himself to Pakistan’s fans. He teased and tested Australia’s batsmen in a game of patience, as Shaun Marsh and Travis Head were his third and fourth victims this morning, adding to the two scalps he had from last evening. The pair fell in almost identical fashion: Abbas pitching on a line just outside off stump and nipping away ever-so-slightly, the outside edges almost drawn to the ball as if they were in its magnetic field.Sarfraz Ahmed, keen to take advantage of the new ball while the pitch was cooperative, kept Abbas in for a lengthy seven-over spell, and Pakistan seem to have unearthed a gem who looks dangerous whatever the conditions or situation. He can bowl in England, West Indies or the UAE without so much as noticing where he is. Right-handers, left-handers, new ball, old ball. He is a trump card Pakistan may continue to play for years to come.Mitchell Marsh looked solid for the time he was at the crease, and with Aaron Finch, who had managed to survive all morning, Australia needed a partnership of the sort Sarfraz and Fakhar had put on on Tuesday. But within the last half hour before lunch, the session’s pendulum swung decisively in Pakistan’s favour as the spinners made their presence felt. First it was Yasir who took Marsh’s edge, another catch for the reliable Asad Shafiq at first slip. Bilal Asif then struck the hammer blow when he removed the opener Finch for 39, with short leg diving to take a smart catch after the ball had skimmed the inside edge. And there was still time for Asif to remove the Australia captain Tim Paine in the last over before lunch, trapping him on the crease as the ball spun sharply into his pads.Pakistan didn’t need any help, but they were assisted by a moment of madness from Marnus Labuschagne which ended Australia’s biggest partnership – 37 runs. After Starc drove Yasir tamely back to the bowler, Yasir got a touch onto the ball as it headed towards the stumps. Labuschagne had his bat in the air as he watched the ball hit the stumps, but inexplicably failed to ground his bat. Soon after, Asif broke through Lyon’s defences, before Abbas completed a five-wicket haul – and his career-best innings figures – to wrap up Australia’s innings. With none of the batting concerns Australia had before this series coming close to being resolved, it appears hard to see a way out of this hole for Paine’s men. Pakistan, meanwhile, are on course to put last week aside as an unfortunate blip, and walk away with the authority to claim that their UAE formula still adds up.

How Leeds’ dream starting XI may look after signing 3 new players in January

Leeds United are gearing up for a busy January of business as they prepare for an assault towards the automatic promotion places.

Eight points is the difference between them and the league's top two, Leicester City and Ipswich Town, but with some positive reinforcements in the transfer window, the Whites could soon close that gap.

While incomings are expected to arrive through the door, speculation continues to link teenage sensations Archie Gray and Wilfried Gnonto with moves away from the club.

According to TEAMtalk, Liverpool and Borussia Dortmund are interested in luring Gray out of Yorkshire with Leeds slapping a £50m price tag on the 17-year-old.

Leeds United manager Daniel Farke.

In a different report from the same outlet, Lazio are preparing to agree on a pricey loan deal to capture Gnonto in January, with a potential option to buy set at €15m (£13.1m).

If Leeds do decide to sell the talented duo, amid links to several clubs, Daniel Farke could be provided with the funds to bolster multiple areas of his squad, strengthening their chances of returning to the Premier League.

With this in mind, here's what a predicted Leeds XI could look like come the end of the January window…

1 GK – Illan Meslier

Leeds goalkeeper Illan Meslier.

At the age of 23 years and 16 days, Illan Meslier became the youngest-ever goalkeeper to reach a century of appearances in the Premier League.

A testament to how good the talented shot-stopper is, the Frenchman continues to grow in stature in between the sticks and since Leeds were relegated to the Championship, he's played an integral role in their strong start to the season.

He's kept an impressive six clean sheets and conceded just 16 goals with his side boasting the joint-second best defence in the division.

2 RB – Archie Gray

Leeds United midfielder Archie Gray.

A central midfielder by trade, the 17-year-old has adapted into a right-back berth this term under Farke and although he's shown signs of his rawness in defence, he's also showcased why several clubs, including Liverpool and Dortmund, are keen on snapping him up.

He "oozes class" – as dubbed by journalist James Marshment – and the fact the Whites have slapped a £50m price tag on the youngster suggests how highly rated he is, having featured in all but one Championship game this term and made the most tackles in the Leeds squad (2.3), as per Sofascore.

3 CB – Joe Rodon

Leeds defender Joe Rodon.

Rodon has been a revelation in the heart of the Leeds defence since arriving on loan from Tottenham Hotspur in the summer and has found himself a home at Elland Road.

While the possibility of him returning to north London in January has been mooted given their ongoing injury crisis, Leeds should do all they can to capture the Welshman on a permanent deal – even if a reported price tag of £20m could make that difficult to complete.

The 26-year-old has oozed class, averaging a 90% pass completion, 1.2 interceptions and four clearances per game this term.

4 CB – Pascal Struijk

Leeds defender Pascal Struijk.

Despite being out injured currently with two hernias, Struijk is preferred to partner Rodon over Liam Cooper in defence having performed exceptionally well prior to this minor setback.

While it would have been easy for the Belgium-born titan to jump ship following relegation, he's played a vital role in commanding the defence, setting the tone with his sensational ball-playing capabilities.

Across 15 matches this term, he ranks in the top 8% against his positional peers in the Championship for passes attempted, top 19% for pass completion and top 7% for progressive passes, as per FBref.

5 LB – Sam Byram

Leeds defender Sam Byram.

The Thorp Arch academy graduate, who returned to the club this summer, has made the left back position his own and that is a testament to the work rate, energy and dynamism he offers his side down the left flank, complimenting the sublime skillset of Crysencio Summerville.

Although he was forced off with an injury in the win over Plymouth Argyle, he is expected to return after the international break and that is music to the ears of Leeds supporters.

6 CM – Glen Kamara

joe-rodon-glen-kamara-leeds-opinion

Once described as a "class act" by former manager Steven Gerrard, Kamara has quickly struck an influential partnership with Ethan Ampadu in the engine room, complimenting the Welshman's tough-tackling displays with his superb passing range and tidiness in possession.

The 28-year-old, who has featured nine times this term, ranks in the top 2% of all Championship midfielders for pass completion (91.5%) and the top 11% for progressive passes per 90 (7.35).

7 CM – Ethan Ampadu

Leeds midfielder Ethan Ampadu.

The superlatives continue to drop for Ethan Ampadu following his £7m move from Chelsea in the summer and for good reason.

Dubbed "brilliant" by his Welsh midfield partner Jordan James, the 23-year-old has exhumed brilliance in the majority of his 16 matches this term, anchoring the Leeds ship towards promotion through his all-action displays.

Ampadu has made the second most tackles per game (2.2), the most interceptions (1.6) and accurate long balls (2.6) in the Whites squad.

8 RW – Grady Diangana

grady-diangana-transfer-gossip-leeds-united-west-bromwich-albion-farke-cody-gakpo

As reported by several outlets, including the Express & Star, Leeds were interested in signing Grady Diangana from West Brom in the summer, with the Baggies planting a £7m price tag on his head.

If the Whites were to go back in for a second bite of the cherry in January, they'd be purchasing a winger who not only has the "potential for magic" – as per journalist Graeme Brown – but has also averaged more successful take-ons (2.67 / 1.22) and more assists per 90 (0.40 / 0.38) this term than current fleet-footed right winger, Dan James.

9 CAM – Nadiem Amiri

Bayer Leverkusen midfielderNadiem Amiri.

Leeds had a bid of £5.1m (€6m) accepted for Bayer Leverkusen attacking midfielder Nadiem Amiri in the summer, however, Farke pulled out of the deal when personal terms couldn't be agreed.

That said, recent reports suggest that Amiri wants to leave the German giants after being told he wasn't in Xabi Alonso's plans, only making five appearances this term.

If he did move to Elland Road, he'd offer more of a creative threat than current number ten, Joel Piroe, averaging more progressive passes and carries than the Dutchman.

10 LW – Crysencio Summerville

rutter-summerville-leeds-opinion

Summerville has arguably been the best winger in the Championship this term, posting an impressive six goals and five assists in 13 appearances.

The 22-year-old possesses the unique ability to conjure up match-winning moments out of nowhere, as demonstrated by his incredible display against Norwich City.

The Dutch dynamo inspired a Leeds comeback on that afternoon and has produced magic throughout the season, recording the most goals, assists, highest average Sofascore rating (7.79) and second-most chances created (7) in Farke's side.

West Ham could land "ridiculously good" Coufal upgrade in January

West Ham United may have invested heavily in the summer transfer window, mainly utilising the £105m freed up from the sale of Declan Rice, but David Moyes is still in need of January reinforcements.

Despite reaching the quarter-finals of the Carabao Cup and coming to within touching distance of the Europa League knockout stages, fixture congestion has taken its toll on their squad.

The Hammers have won just one of their last five matches in the Premier League and although they stopped the rot with a 3-2 victory over Nottingham Forest last time out, the squad could do with more competition for places as Moyes eyes up a new right back to challenge Vladimir Coufal.

West Ham transfer news – Aaron Wan-Bissaka

As relayed by Football Transfers earlier this week, West Ham could go back in for Aaron Wan-Bissaka in January, after failing to secure a deal for the 25-year-old in the summer.

It is reported that the Irons are looking at the Manchester United star as a possible target following the news of Coufal's uncertain future with the club unwilling to extend his contract beyond the summer.

Negotiations with the club's other right-back, Ben Johnson, have also hit a stumbling block, as the club and player remain some distance apart in agreeing terms of the deal.

That said, West Ham could launch a bid for Wan-Bissaka, who is valued at £17.5m (€20m) as per Football Observatory, and land an upgrade on Coufal.

The stats that show Wan-Bissaka would be an upgrade on Coufal

This time last year, it looked as though Wan-Bissaka would be departing Man Utd in January after being overtaken by Diogo Dalot in the pecking order at right-back, but the Englishman fought for his place and thanks to some solid form, won the starting berth back from Dalot.

With the Red Devils more interested in extending his one-year option as opposed to entertaining talks for a long-term renewal, his future is once again up in the air, which suggests he is not guaranteed to be a key part of their plans moving forward.

West Ham defender Vladimir Coufal.

At West Ham, however, he would likely play a pivotal role in Moyes' starting XI, returning to his home city where his attributes as an all-encompassing full-back would be allowed to flourish.

Described by James Maddison as a "ridiculously good" one vs one defender and the "best in the world bar none" for how difficult he is to get past, Wan-Bissaka has reined in the plaudits for the fundamentals of his defensive work, prioritizing his ability to tackle and pocket opposing wingers as opposed to marauding up the pitch.

For a Hammers side that are tasked with doing a lot of defending, having a full-back capable of doing the above is imperative, with the 25-year-old boasting the physical attributes and defensive statistics that demonstrate he's an upgrade on Coufal in that area.

Although Coufal eclipses Wan-Bissaka for his attacking output, posting four assists this season compared to the Englishman's one, the Man Utd titan is better than his compatriot in every other department, offering added strength in the tackle, explosive ball carrying and better accuracy with his passing.

With Wan-Bissaka open to leaving Old Trafford, Moyes should pounce at the opportunity to sign the former England under-21 star and solidify a position that is in need of surgery.

Sri Lanka spinner Akila Dananjaya is likely to miss the third Test against England in Colombo, as he is set to travel to Brisbane to undergo biomechanical testing after having his bowling action reported. He will be available for selection for the second Test, which begins on Wednesday, however.Team management had hoped Dananjaya could fly the short distance to the ICC-approved testing centre in Chennai in between the second and third Test in order to complete his biomechanical examination there. However, they have been made aware by the ICC that the Chennai centre is currently unavailable due to ongoing upgrades. Centres in Loughborough in the UK, Pretoria in South Africa, and Brisbane are the only options that remain.SLC is likely to send the spinner to Brisbane, largely because an Australia visa will take the shortest time to obtain. “We’re hoping to get Akila down to Colombo the day the second Test ends, and send him on from there,” team manager Jeryl Woutersz said. “At this stage it doesn’t seem like he will be able to be back in time for the third Test.”The fifth day of the second Test, in Pallekele, is schedule to take place on November 18. There is only a four-day gap before the third Test, which starts on November 23.
