Malinda Pushpakumara bags all 10 wickets in an innings

The Sri Lanka left-arm spinner picked up 10 for 37 in a Premier League Tier A match for Colombo Cricket Club against Saracens Sports Club

Malinda Pushpakumara, the Sri Lanka left-arm spinner, has achieved the rare feat of taking all ten wickets in a first-class innings. Bowling for Colombo Cricket Club in Moratuwa, Pushpakumara took 10 for 37 to bowl Saracens Sports Club out for 113 in a fourth-innings chase of 349.Pushpakumara took the new ball for CCC, and bowled an unchanged 18.4-over spell in a Saracens innings that lasted 36.4 overs. He also picked up a six-for in Saracens’ first innings, and finished with match figures of 16 for 110.Pushpakumara’s figures of 10 for 37 are the joint 13th-best in first-class history, for matches with full scorecard details, and not including 12-a-side games. Another left-arm spinner – the opposition’s Chamikara Edirisinghe – had in fact almost achieved the feat himself, taking the first nine CCC wickets, only for teammate Ashen Bandara to claim the final dismissal.During the course of the match, Pushpakumara also went past 700 first-class wickets. The left-arm spinner, who has played four Tests and two ODIs since his international debut in August 2017, now has 715 first-class wickets from 123 matches, at an average of 19.19.The last bowler to take all ten wickets in an innings was another Test left-arm spinner with a mighty first-class record, Pakistan’s Zulfiqar Babar. Bowling for Multan in the 2009-10 Quaid-e-Azam Trophy, Zulfiqar took 10 for 143 in Islamabad’s first innings in a match that eventually ended in a draw. Two bowlers have taken all ten in an innings in Test cricket – the England offspinner Jim Laker took 10 for 56 against Australia at Old Trafford in 1956 and the India legspinner Anil Kumble picked up 10 for 74 against Pakistan at the Feroz Shah Kotla 43 years later.

O’Neil could sign big Gomes upgrade with Wolves move for “fabulous” £7m ace

Wolverhampton Wanderers will want to get back to winning ways on Christmas Eve when Chelsea travel to Molineux, Gary O'Neil's side losing to West Ham United 3-0 last time out despite registering more shots on the day than David Moyes' arguably fortunate hosts.

The disappointing nature of this defeat could see the Wolves manager assess and scrutinise his squad over the Christmas fixtures to come, wanting to see more from a number of underperforming individuals before making a call in January over who he should recruit and bring into Molineux.

The Old Gold could add this long-term target to their squad finally when the transfer window reopens, keeping the likes of Joao Gomes on their toes in midfield in the process.

Wolves transfer latest – Premier League midfielder rumoured

A report from the Mirror earlier this month disclosed that Wolves will go full steam ahead in their pursuit of Burnley midfielder Josh Brownhill this January, who is yet to sign a new contract with Vincent Kompany's Clarets.

That could result in Wolves swooping in to secure the central midfielder for just £7m, with interest also coming in the form of Crystal Palace, Fulham and Leicester City who all want to land the 28-year-old at the expense of O'Neil's side.

Kompany did fire back at these rumours, stating rather strongly that "they are rumours that I can not even entertain" when speaking to The Burnley Express recently. Still, Brownhill could have his head swayed by a potential move to Molineux.

This isn't the first time Brownhill has been linked with a move away from Turf Moor, rumoured to be joining Aston Villa back in 2021 with football pundit and ex-Villa midfielder Lee Hendrie calling the midfielder "fabulous" at the time and likening him to John McGinn when speaking to FootballFanCast.

The experienced midfielder could even displace Gomes on his potential arrival to the West Midlands in O'Neil's first team, Wolves' number 35 needing to impress his manager in the games to close out December or face the chop with or without Brownhill joining.

How Josh Brownhill compares to Joao Gomes

Gomes has put in a number of unsatisfactory displays in the middle of the park for the top-flight club this campaign, resulting in the Brazilian averaging a second-rate 6.69 Sofascore rating from 15 games to date.

In contrast, Brownhill has been a shining light for the relegation-threatened Clarets and has averaged a superior 7.06 rating from 16 games – scoring three times this season to chip in and do his part.

Josh Brownhill in action for Burnley.

Gomes was noticeably way off the pace against Brownhill's side at Molineux at the start of the month, inaccurate with his only long ball attempt of the game in a quiet showing from the reserved midfielder.

Whereas, Brownhill excels venturing forward and helping out in attack – Wolves in dire need of a midfield presence who is urgent and energetic on the ball, alongside being adept at scoring from long-range ever since Ruben Neves left in the summer.

O'Neil could finally replace Neves in Wolves swoop for £7m ace

Wolves are showing interest in a current Premier League midfielder…

ByRoss Kilvington Dec 11, 2023

Away at Molineux, despite exiting the field of play on the losing team, Burnley's number eight was head and shoulders above his uninspiring counterpart – attempting to catch the visitors out with two efforts on goal, winning all four of his aerial duels with determination too.

Looking at FBRef, Brownhill would be a smart acquisition on Wolves' end – the statistics show that his bright performance in the West Midlands against O'Neil's men is indicative of his full campaign with Gomes falling short in comparison.

Over the last year, per 90 minutes, Brownhill has amassed 2.85 shot-creating actions compared to Gomes' lacklustre 2.03.

On top of that, Brownhill is far more impressive as a combative and disruptive presence in midfield than Gomes also.

Wolves midfielder Joao Gomes.

Gomes comes in at just 0.66 interceptions, whilst his Clarets equivalent has a far more impressive 1.61 on average – the Brazilian coming up short in the statistics you'd want a midfielder to excel in, bailed out by the bravery and creativity of midfield partner Mario Lemina.

The 22-year-old's cemented spot in the Wolves first team could well be up for grabs therefore, with O'Neil desperate to sign Brownhill to enhance his midfield and propel the Old Gold to new heights.

Kings XI Punjab complete heist as Delhi Capitals lose 7 for 8

Sam Curran took 4 for 11, including a hat-trick, while Mohammed Shami set the collapse in motion by dismissing the set Rishabh Pant

The Report by Andrew Fidel Fernando01-Apr-20194:28

Hodge: Delhi looked a deflated unit once Pant departed

Twenty-three runs to get. Twenty-one balls to get them in. Seven wickets in hand. Two set batsmen at the crease. You can’t lose T20 games from there, right?Well, Delhi Capitals did.In an insane collapse that even the old Daredevils would have been embarrassed of, this revamped Delhi team lost their last seven wickets for eight runs, as Mohammed Shami and Sam Curran produced death overs that even they might never have thought could be so productive. Curran was a monster, claiming 4 for 11 from his 2.2 overs – his last eight deliveries yielding all of his wickets, and only four runs. Shami, though, was the man who set the collapse in motion, uprooting Rishabh Pant’s middle stump in the 17th over, then making a mess of Hanuma Vihari’s stumps in the 19th.In between, captain R Ashwin produced a run out, this time one even his harshest critics could not claim was unethical. When Chris Morris pushed the first ball he faced to Ashwin at mid-off, Kings XI’s captain swooped, picked up, and threw down the stumps, finding Morris meters short, and tore into the embrace of his team-mates. The wicket of Pant was important, but it was the dismissal of Morris that seemed to breathe sudden life into the Kings XI team as well as their home crowd, just as it seemed to strike Delhi dead.Next over, Curran had the other set batsman – Colin Ingram – caught at the long-off boundary, and Kings XI had swung the game dramatically in their favour, in the space of seven deliveries.Sam Curran roars after picking up a wicket•BCCI

The hat-trickAlways difficult to spot these when split across two overs, but Curran did take one, having Harshal Patel caught behind off the last ball of the 18th over, before dismissing Kagiso Rabada and Sandeep Lamichhane off the first two balls of the 20th. There were doubts as to whether he could justify his INR 7.2 crore price tag, particularly after he’d been left out of previous games, but a bowling analysis of 4 for 11 and batting returns of 20 off 10 balls go some way to suggesting he might be worth the hype. The collapse in fullOf the seven batsmen to be dismissed during this incredibly hilarious/pathetic (choose adjective based on where your allegiances lie) period of play, four ended with their stumps in some sort of disarray. Pant had his middle peg neatly knocked out of the ground by Shami, the annoying wires attached to the stump camera ruining the possibility that it might carthweel towards the wicketkeeper. Hanuma Vihari had two stumps – leg and middle – blasted out of the ground in Shami’s next over, as he aimed a swipe over midwicket. Kagiso Rabada and Sandeep Lamichhane had their woodwork rattled by Curran to end the match, and in between there was Ashwin’s run out, and the two catches off Ingram and Harshal Patel. It was like watching a train derailing in slow motion.Rishabh Pant is bowled after going across the line•BCCI

Two 62-run partnershipsAlthough both teams lost wickets in quick succession in the end, their 62-run fourth wicket stands laid the platforms that the middle and lower orders squandered. For Kings XI, Sarfaraz Khan and David Miller launched a recovery from 58 for 3, and helped ensure that although they did not deliver the team to a good total, they got them to a half-decent one. Pant and Ingram came together with Delhi at 82 for 3, and seemed to be marching resolutely towards that sub-par target – Kings XI’s middle-overs bowlers seemingly no match for the pair.Miller was the highest scorer of the four, hitting 43 off 30 balls. Pant was the fastest – his 39 coming off 26 balls. Sarfaraz and Ingram both faced 29 balls, making 39 and 38 respectively. What this report would have said if it had rained 16.4 overs into Delhi’s inningsThe Kings XI innings was not without its bright spots, but they lost six wickets for 36 runs towards the end of their innings, and landed upon a modest score, which Delhi were chasing down with ease before the rains came. Delhi’s Duckworth-Lewis-Stern victory was set up by death bowlers Chris Morris and Kagiso Rabada, who shared five wickets between them, before Delhi’s top order orchestrated a straightforward chase – Pant and Ingram top-scoring. At least one of these batsmen – perhaps both – seemed headed for a half century, but were denied the milestone by rain’s arrival.

Clement could land an ideal Jack replacement in Rangers move for 25 y/o gem

Glasgow Rangers begin 2024 occupying second place in the Scottish Premiership table and Philippe Clement will be aiming to make this year a much better one than 2023, that’s for sure.

The first ten months of last year were nothing to shout home about, yet the Belgian manager took over and changed the fortunes of the club in the space of just two and a half months in what has been an incredible turnaround.

A League Cup trophy has already been added to the trophy cabinet and, despite a recent 2-1 defeat to Celtic, the mood is high heading into the winter break.

The onus on the 49-year-old coach will now be to ship out some deadwood this month along with signing a couple of new players in order to bolster his squad.

With this in mind, the Ibrox side have been linked with a move for a South American midfielder who was once teammates with former Ibrox cult figure Alfredo Morelos…

Rangers transfer news – Steven Alzate

The previous few weeks have been productive, to say the least, but Clement struggled with injuries to several central midfielders, such as John Lundstram, Ryan Jack, Jose Cifuentes, and Nico Raskin.

Latest Rangers transfer news: Gers want PL teen; Saudi link to midfield ace

Who is Philippe Clement eyeing up in the transfer window ahead of his first full season at Ibrox?

ByRoss Kilvington Jul 9, 2024

While they are all either totally recovered or close to returning to the senior side, the crisis means that the manager must bring in another midfielder or two during the transfer window.

According to Belgian outlet DH Les Sports (via the Scottish Sun), the Gers are monitoring the situation of midfielder Steven Alzate, who has only a few months left on his contract at Premier League side Brighton and Hove Albion.

Steven Alzate for Brighton

Brighton are looking to sell him during the January transfer window in order to secure themselves some sort of transfer fee, rather than see him walk free in the summer.

The Colombian has spent the previous 18 months on loan at Standard Liege. Although he is currently suffering from an ankle injury, he could be injury-free once Rangers return to action in a couple of weeks.

The Light Blues have a few midfielders out of contract themselves at the end of the season – most notably Lundstram and Jack – and this is a position which Clement will be desperate to bolster.

The former Sheffield United enforcer will likely secure an extension to his deal, but this should be the final season for Jack at the Glasgow side, especially with his recurring injury niggles.

Alzate could be a dream replacement for the Scot, who has been a stalwart for the Gers since arriving in 2017.

Ryan Jack’s statistics at Rangers

The former Aberdeen gem cost Rangers nothing when he arrived during the summer of 2017 on a free transfer after his contract at the Dons expired, and it looked as though it could be a solid piece of business by the club.

Jack soon became a mainstay in the first team and, despite failing to win a trophy during his first three seasons at Ibrox, progress was shown.

Ryan Jack

Injury problems were his kryptonite, however, and prior to the title-winning 2020/21 campaign, Jack missed 41 matches due to various injuries and this would become a recurring theme during his spell in Glasgow.

He managed to play 19 times as the club won their first Premiership crown for a decade, chipping in with two vital goals, yet he featured just 22 times in all competitions the following season as he continued to pick up knocks on a regular basis.

Despite playing only eight times in the league this term, Jack has shown glimmers of his abilities as he currently has an 87% pass success rate along with losing possession just 4.9 times per game, and he is a useful option for Clement to call upon, when fit, that is.

Paying a wage for someone who could miss 50% or more of the season is a big gamble to take and the former Club Brugge manager should make the call to let him leave for free this summer.

Steven Alzate could replace Ryan Jack

The 25-year-old was picked up by Brighton in the same summer as Rangers signed Jack, yet it took him a couple of seasons to make his way into the senior side.

A decent loan spell at Swindon Town helped his cause and he went on to play 19 times in the Premier League during 2019/20.

Journalist Josh Bunting heaped praise on him during that season, saying: “Steven Alzate superb again for Brighton, he is so creative, brings so much energy into the game.”

This was as good as it got for Alzate on the south coast, adding just another 24 top-flight appearances to his CV before sealing another temporary switch away from the Amex, this time to Belgium.

Brighton’s loss has been Standard Liege’s gain as the English-born gem has shone in the Belgian top flight over the previous 18 months.

Last term, the midfielder ranked fifth among the squad for goals and assists in the top flight (eight), while also ranking fourth for big chances created (five), first for accurate passes per game (42), and second for tackles per game (2.4).

These statistics indicate that he would be an ideal replacement for Jack, especially as he clearly has the required passing and defensive abilities to succeed at Rangers.

Meanwhile, the talented gem could also offer a threat going forward with his ability to create big opportunities for his teammates in the final third.

Alzate has played just 11 times in the league this term, yet has already contributed one goal and two assists, proving that he can chip in with the odd goal contribution.

Steven Alzate

Jack’s spell at Rangers will go down as a major what-if. Although he has featured 204 times for the club, the reality is, it could have been so much more if not for the continuous stream of injuries.

Indeed, the Scot has missed a grand total of 118 matches through a succession of injuries since 2017 and the older he gets, the longer it will take for him to recover from any injury he suffers.

This represents an ideal chance for the Gers to bring in a player such as Alzate, who has shown his abilities both defensively and in an attacking sense during his spells with Brighton and Standard Liege in recent years.

Wolves now close to signing PSG midfielder in January transfer

Wolverhampton Wanderers are closing in on making their first January signing under Gary O'Neil and are in the advanced stages of tying up a deal for a talented gem, according to transfer insider Fabrizio Romano.

Wolves eyeing January deals

Wolves have enjoyed an encouraging Premier League campaign despite initial doubts from som over their capabilities at the beginning of this term and will now break off from English top-flight duty to face Brentford in the FA Cup third round on Friday evening.

Nevertheless, incomings and outgoings will be on the mind of O'Neil and his counterparts at Molineux as the 40-year-old looks to trim some areas of his squad in order to add quality reinforcements.

Of course, Portuguese outcast Fabio Silva has already left the building this month and will spend the rest of the season on loan at Scottish Premiership side Rangers, and could be joined in his departure by fellow striker Sasa Kalajdzic, who is being courted by Bundesliga side Eintracht Frankfurt.

Most fans will be concerned more with where shiny new arrivals may arrive from over the course of January and West Ham United star Said Benrahma is said to be a target for the Old Gold; however, Fulham and Olympique Lyon are also keen to sign the Algeria international, as provided by Foot Mercato.

Arnaut Danjuma is also believed to be of interest to the latter and it remains to be seen whether their move for the Everton loanee would rule them out of a move for Benrahma. Nevertheless, the Old Gold now look to be close to making their first signing of the January window, according to new developments detailed by Romano.
