Mumbai, Kings XI look to put controversies behind, move up the table

Mumbai’s middle-order batting has been a bit shaky, while Kings XI’s recent home record against Rohit Sharma’s men hasn’t been too good

The Preview by Sruthi Ravindranath29-Mar-20193:49

Will Kings XI bring in Mujeeb Ur Rahman?

Big pictureTheir respective first wins this season might have been marred – or overshadowed – by controversy, but Mumbai Indians and Kings XI Punjab will be glad they don’t have any alarming issues to address yet.Mumbai, who came into the tournament with depleted overseas pace stocks, look well-rounded now with Lasith Malinga’s inclusion. They have further received a shot in the arm by roping in West Indies fast bowler Alzarri Joseph as Adam Milne’s replacement. On the other hand, Kings XI, who were over-reliant on openers KL Rahul and Chris Gayle last year, now look like they have a middle-order that can step up when needed. Last year, their middle order (No. 4 to 7) contributed at an average of just 20 in 13 innings, but this year, in just two games, there has been a remarkable turnaround: they average 84 at a strike rate of 148.7.Rohit Sharma and R Ashwin pose ahead of the toss•BCCI

Mumbai do have concerns in the middle order, to be fair. They lost five wickets for 24 runs in the middle during the match against Royal Challengers Bangalore and only recovered because of Hardik Pandya, whose counter-attacking 14-ball 32 took them to 187. Similarly, Yuvraj Singh’s 35-ball 53 was their only solid middle-order contribution in the 37-run loss to Delhi Capitals in their first game. After a couple of away games, Kings XI are all set for their first home game of the season; while that’s usually a cause for optimism for most teams, and they do have a 51% win record in Mohali, they have lost to Mumbai in the last four encounters at the venue.Likely XIsMumbai Indians: 1 Rohit Sharma (capt), 2 Quinton de Kock (wk), 3 Suryakumar Yadav, 4 Yuvraj Singh, 5 Kieron Pollard, 6 Hardik Pandya, 7 Krunal Pandya, 8 Mitchell McClenaghan, 9 Mayank Markande, 10 Jasprit Bumrah, 11 Lasith MalingaKings XI Punjab: 1 Chris Gayle, 2 KL Rahul (wk), 3 Mayank Agarwal, 4 Sarfaraz Khan, 5 David Miller (wk), 6 Mandeep Singh, 7 Andrew Tye, 8 R Ashwin (capt), 9 Mohammed Shami, 10 Mujeeb Ur Rahman, 11 Ankit RajpootChris Gayle was at his blistering best after taking his time to get going•BCCI

Strategy puntChris Gayle and David Miller have an impressive record against Mumbai in the tournament. Gayle averages 41 with five half-centuries, while Miller averages 42.8. So how do you stop these two in-form batsmen? The answer, according to historical data, is Malinga. Gayle has scored just 85 runs in 14 innings in T20s against the fast bowler and has lost his wicket twice to him. Miller averages just 8.8 against Malinga and has been dismissed four times.Short-ball strategy against Gayle? Since IPL 2015, Gayle has lost his wicket six times to short-pitched deliveries. Mujeeb ur Rahman, who was replaced by million-dollar mystery spinner Varun Chakravarthy last game, has played just three games in Mohali but has an impressive record. He’s picked up 11 wickets and has bowled at an economy of 6.6. Will Kings XI bring him back for this match?Stats that matterSince IPL 2016, Mumbai have won 80% of the matches when their captain Rohit Sharma has scored 20 or above.Mumbai are just one away from their 100th win in IPL – no team has reached the milestone yet. Gayle is two short of becoming the first batsman to hit 300 sixes in the IPL.

A pressão deu resultado

Rojas voltou a marcar

Celtic ace Liel Abada may now leave seal January exit in new transfer twist

Celtic are in a positive position heading into the second half of the campaign; however, they could now face a fight on their hands to retain a key first-team man, according to a new report.

Celtic up and running in January…

Despite repeated sentiment from Brendan Rodgers regarding his pursuit of quality reinforcements this month, Celtic have endured a quiet transfer window; nevertheless, they finally look to have sprung into action in the last few days.

Taking to social media platform X, Sky Sports journalist Anthony Joseph has confirmed that Rapid Vienna winger Nicolas Kuhn is now close to joining the Scottish Premiership champions and will travel to complete a medical before being announced as their first January signing, as he stated below:

An alternative report claims that Bologna striker Sydney van Hooijdonk could also be set to join the Hoops once the Serie A outfit ratify a deal to bring in Velez Sarsfield striker Santiago Castro. Rocco Vata is of interest to the Italian outfit, which could pave the way for smoother negotiations on both sides.

Of course, a striker has become paramount to Rodgers' January transfer strategy in light of Oh Hyeon-gyu, Daizen Maeda and Yang Hyun-jun being involved at the Asian Cup. Kyogo Furuhashi is the only recognised striker at the club and is likely to need support over the coming weeks.

Celtic to spring out of nowhere for “flamboyant” £3.4m target – report

It’s been quiet on the transfer front for months, but Celtic could now come alive.

ByDavid Comerford Jan 13, 2024

Nonetheless, another prolific attacker could potentially leave the club this month as his career in Glasgow has taken yet another turn, according to a report.

Liel Abada could leave Celtic…

According to Football Insider reporter Wayne Veysey, there is a possibility that Liel Abada could depart Celtic before the end of the month due to the imminent arrival of Rapid Vienna attacker Kuhn. The Israel international attracted "significant interest" from other clubs during the last window but ended up signing a new four-year contract in the summer, so this is another transfer twist.

In the copy, it suggests that the two-time Scottish champion could look to move on if an appropriate offer were to arise for his services.

There has been a notion among some that the pro-Palestinian sentiment of some Hoops supporters may play a part in any prospective exit; nevertheless, it is unclear whether there is any defined truth in that statement.

Celtic winger Liel Abada.

Labelled "ambitious" by former boss Ange Postecoglou, Abada has made just seven appearances this campaign due to injury problems, registering one goal and a solitary assist (Abada statistics – Transfermarkt).

Celtic are in the midst of a battle with Rangers to try and claim the Scottish Premiership title and should look to reject any advances for the player due to his importance to the side and ruthless streak in front of the target.

Gloucestershire 335 for 6 (Hammond 95, Taylor 69) beat Sussex 219 (Wiese 55) by 116 runs
Gloucestershire improved their chances of reaching the knockout stages of the Royal London One-Day Cup after a comprehensive 116-run win over Sussex Sharks at Eastbourne. They plundered 135 off the last ten overs and 76 from the last five to boost their total to 335 for 6 and a Sussex side missing Phil Salt, Jofra Archer and Chris Jordan never really threatened despite another half-century from South African all-rounder David Wiese.Benny Howell took a hat-trick – removing Ben Brown, Abi Sakande and Danny Briggs – to finish things off as Sussex were dismissed for 219 in 43.2 overs after losing their last five wickets for 14 runs and their net run rate also suffered. The final round of South Group games on Tuesday will determine which sides join Hampshire in the knockout stages with Gloucestershire, Sussex and Middlesex all in contention.Gloucestershire’s innings was transformed a sensational barrage in the closing overs from Jack Taylor, whose unbeaten 69 came off just 26 balls and included eight sixes and two fours. None of the bowlers were spared as Taylor peppered the small boundaries at the Saffrons, although he was dropped twice in the 47th over by Will Beer on 25 and Luke Wright on 35 off the luckless Mir Hamza. The foundations had been laid by opener Miles Hammond, who quickly came to terms with a two-paced pitch and took few risks. His 95 off 105 balls contained 11 fours and two sixes and it was a surprise when he was caught trying to clear the long-off boundary in the 31st over.Hammond had shared 110 for the first wicket with skipper Chris Dent who made 46 after being dropped by George Garton in the fifth over on nine. Sussex’s spinners Will Beer and Briggs did a good job of tying Gloucestershire down during the middle part of their innings and both finished with 2 for 51. Gareth Roderick’s first 25 runs all came in singles but when he drove Briggs to extra cover for 53 in the 44th over it was the signal for Taylor to cut loose. On a small ground a run rate of 6.72 per over ought to have been well within their range, but Sussex’s innings never got any momentum in the face of some accurate bowling.Luke Wright (21) and George Garton (1) fell in the power-play and Harry Finch (29) and Stiaan van Zyl (29) were unable to build on solid starts. When Wiese, fresh from his record-breaking 171 against Hampshire on Thursday, came in during the 23rd over the required rate had climbed to 8.72 but he kept Sussex in the hunt, sharing 65 in 11 overs with Laurie Evans (44) and 56 in seven with Ben Brown.Sussex were actually one run better off than Gloucestershire as the last ten overs began and Wiese had reached 55 from 58 balls when Taylor ran in from the mid-wicket boundary to hold a diving catch off his younger brother Matt. Brown (27) was caught in the deep off Howell in the 42nd over before he finished the innings off by dismissing Sakande and Briggs from the first two balls of the 44th.Sussex must now beat Glamorgan at Hove to give themselves a chance while Gloucestershire travel to Essex knowing a third successive win could enable them to squeeze into the quarter-finals.

Talks underway: Man Utd now actively discussing Eric Choupo-Moting deal

Heading into the transfer window, Manchester United made clear that supporters shouldn't expect many fireworks. Loan moves were said to be a possibility, with footbball director John Murtough telling a fans' forum that there could be additions "around the edges of the squad", most likely in the form of players "who are not playing as much football as they would like".

Part of the reason United have played down the chances of major permanent incomings is that they're constrained by Financial Fair Play rules as they work to ensure compliance. However, they have opened up some breathing room by offloading Jadon Sancho to Borussia Dortmund on loan, with the Bundesliga club covering some of his wages.

Erik ten Hag ideally wanted to add another forward, with £72m summer signing Rasmus Hojlund only able to find the net twice in the Premier League so far, and United may now have the capacity to do so.

One player who's thought to be open to the idea of moving to Old Trafford is Bayern Munich's Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting. Fabrizio Romano recently told GiveMeSport that the Cameroonian would be a "candidate" if the Red Devils "decide to attack the situation strongly", and it seems they have now taken action.

Man Utd open Choupo-Moting talks

According to French football journalist Seb Ecrivain, Man Utd are now "in contact" with Bayern over Choupo-Moting. The club are "considering" a six-month loan deal that would be seen to "provide a solution to Ten Hag".

Man Utd transfer target Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting in action for Bayern Munich.

Significantly, it's thought that the deal would cost "a minimal amount", though it's not clear whether that refers to the loan fee, the salary contributions or both. Ecrivain adds "to be continued" at the end of his tweet, so we can expect more developments shortly.

Choupo-Moting can help transform Hojlund

Choupo-Moting may fit Murtough's aforementioned criteria as a player sure to be frustrated by a lack of game time. While he's appeared in all but one Bundesliga game for Bayern so far, he's only started three, condemned by the historic form of summer signing Harry Kane. Kane has scored more goals (22) than anybody else in Europe's big five leagues so far this season, and also equalled Robert Lewandowski's record for the most in the first half of a Bundesliga season.

United have seen flashes of promise from Hojlund in recent games with a match-winning effort against Aston Villa to open his Premier League account and then a goal and an assist in the 2-2 draw against Spurs last time out. There may be a temptation, then, to stick with the Dane as the starting number nine, and entrust Choupo-Moting to be a prolific bench presence.

Since he joined Bayern in 2020, he's scored seven goals as a substitute, and this could solve a clear issue for Ten Hag. As the table below shows, United had the most impactful bench in the league last season, but this year, they're down in lower mid-table for the same metrics.

You might question why Choupo-Moting would accept playing second fiddle to Hojlund, but he'd certainly have a much bigger chance of dislodging him than he would Kane given the vast gulf in the output of those two players this season. This, then, may be a deal that makes sense for all parties.
