Celtic could land McGregor 2.0 in swoop for £9.4k-p/w "creative spark"

Celtic look set to finally end their long wait for a new number one to walk through the door at Parkhead as they close in on a deal for Kasper Schmeichel.

The Scottish giants are reportedly on the verge of completing the signing of the Denmark international on a free transfer after his exit from Anderlecht this summer, with a medical scheduled for this coming week.

Joe Hart retired from professional football at the end of May after three years in Glasgow and the former Leicester City goalkeeper is now poised to replace him between the sticks.

Schmeichel worked with Brendan Rodgers at Leicester City and could now reunite with the Northern Irish head coach to hopefully lift some more silverware alongside him next season.

Celtic target Kasper Schmeichel in action for Denmark.

The Danish giant does, however, turn 38 in November and is not likely to be a long-term option for the Hoops, which means that this particular transfer is only a short-term solution.

There is still plenty of time left, however, in the summer transfer window for the Scottish Premiership champions to target younger players with more long-term potential at Parkhead.

Celtic's interest in midfield ace

One player who could come in with the right profile to make an immediate impact whilst also being a long-term option for Rodgers is reported transfer target Riley McGree.

HITC recently claimed that the Hoops are eyeing up a potential swoop to sign the central midfielder from English Championship side Middlesbrough this summer.

It stated that the Australia international has one year left to run on his current contract with Boro and this means that they may have to cash in this year if they want to avoid losing him for nothing.

If they cannot pin the £9.4k-per-week gem down to a contract extension then Celtic, or another foreign club, would be able to speak to him from January 2025 onwards to agree a pre-contract deal ahead of a free transfer move next summer.

This is the second time that the Hoops have wanted to sign McGree as former manager Ange Postecoglou attempted to snap him up from Charlotte in the MLS back in 2021.

The Scottish giants had a bid of £2m accepted for the midfield maestro but he eventually opted to put pen to paper on a deal with Middlesbrough to move to England, and said in 2022 that he will "stand by" that decision.

This summer may present him with a chance to finally make a move to Parkhead, though, and he could come in as the long-term heir to Callum McGregor.

Callum McGregor's form for Celtic last season

The Scotland international enjoyed a solid season in the Premiership last term but Rodgers may have one eye on what life could look like after him.

At the age of 31, the academy graduate is heading into the final years of his career, or at least the peak of it, and McGree could come in as a future successor to him.

Callum McGregor

But, what exactly would the Boro star need to provide in order to do that? Well, McGregor is a metronomic passer who can dictate the tempo of games and progress play consistently to find his teammates in dangerous positions.

The Scottish ace played in 35 of the club's 38 league matches, starting 33 of those games, and this shows that he remains an integral part of Rodgers' plans as it stands.

As you can see in the table above, the Celtic captain was a midfield metronome for the club in the Premiership with his sublime 92% pass accuracy, which shows that he very rarely gave the ball away to the opposition.

McGregor did not achieve that high success rate through being boring or safe in possession, though, as he created seven 'big chances' for his teammates and made 1.4 key passes per game.

This shows that the 31-year-old star is a creative force in the middle of the park for the Scottish giants, as well as a reliable passer, whilst he can also hold his own in duels with a 54% success rate in physical contests.

Why Riley McGree could be Callum McGregor 2.0

The 25-year-old is not the finished article as he heads into what could be the peak years of his career and Rodgers could look to develop him into being a dream heir to McGregor.

As a left-footed midfielder with an eye for a pass, the potential is there for the Australian whiz to come in and eventually take over from the Hoops skipper.

McGree still has room for improvement in his reliability as a passer, with a success rate of 83% in the Championship for Boro last term, but he did complete 88% of his attempted passes inside his own half.

His decision-making on the ball was forward-thinking and progressive, though, as he ranked within the top 9% of midfielders in the division for progressive passes per 90 (5.72) and the top 35% for progressive carries per 90 (3.22).

This shows that McGree, who was dubbed a "creative spark" by journalist Josh Bunting, was one of the best midfielders in the Championship when it came to progressing the ball through passes and carries.

This suggests that the talented ace could fulfill McGregor's role in the Celtic team in that respect – passing through lines to find attackers at the top end of the pitch.

As you can see in the table above, McGree also showcased his threat as a scorer and a creator of goals for Middlesbrough in the 2022/23 campaign.

He created more than one chance per game, as McGregor did last term in the Premiership, and racked up 14 goals and 'big chances' created combined.

This suggests that the potential is there for the Boro whiz to come in as a progressive and creative midfielder who can also chip in with goals for the Hoops.

Therefore, he could be a dream long-term successor to McGregor, as he is six years younger than the Scottish star, whilst also being an excellent option in the immediate term as a squad option.

Rangers struck gold on GVB signing who’s worth more than Barron

Glasgow Rangers manager Philippe Clement has gone about his transfer business fairly well so far this summer, managing to lower the average age of the first-team squad at Ibrox rather considerably.

At the end of last season, Ryan Jack, Borna Barisic, Kemar Roofe, John Lundstram and Jon McLaughlin all departed Rangers once their contracts expired. The quintet had an average age of 32, and it was clear that allowing them to leave would free up space in the wage budget for future incomings.

Since then, Clement has signed seven players, with all but one – Liam Kelly – under the age of 23, showing how important he is placing his trust in young talent ahead of the current campaign.

The likes of Hamza Igamane, Clinton Nsiala and Jefte all look to have bright futures in the game if they can continue their development under the tutelage of the Belgian manager.

It is the signing of Connor Barron which could prove to be one of the most impressive deals that the Light Blues will conduct this summer, especially as his profile fits Rangers perfectly.

What Barron could offer Rangers next season

The former Aberdeen midfielder had been linked with a move to the Ibrox side as far back as January this year, although Clement would surely have been keeping an eye on the player’s contract situation after a few weeks in the hot seat.

Connor Barron Aberdeen

With the rumour mill circling once the 2023/24 season finished, it looked as though the Gers were going to miss out on Barron, as Swansea City were showing interest, along with a few Serie A sides.

After weeks of speculation, Clement finally announced the signing of the Scottish midfielder in what was arguably the most obvious piece of transfer business the club could do this summer, with the majority of the Ibrox faithful clearly wondering when a deal would happen.

The 21-year-old made his Premiership debut for the Dons during the 2021/22 season, but it wasn’t until last term that he became a regular member of the starting XI.

Across all competitions, Barron made 42 appearances for Aberdeen, scoring once and registering three assists from the heart of the midfield.

Among his teammates, the Scot ranked third for accurate passes per game (27.6) in the Premiership, along with ranking fourth for key passes per match (0.8) and for tackles per game (1.8), showcasing his talents across a range of metrics.

There was no doubt he was destined for better things and the Light Blues have secured a wonderful bargain, as Barron will likely make them a substantial profit in the near future.

At the time of writing, his current market valuation according to Transfermarkt stands at €1m (£850k), but this will rise rapidly once he hits the ground running at Ibrox.

Despite losing a couple of midfielders in the summer, the Gers have a player in their current squad who has been linked with an exit in recent weeks, yet is worth over twice the value of Barron…

Rangers have hit gold with Giovanni van Bronckhorst signing

In the summer of 2022, Van Bronckhorst embarked on his first summer transfer window in charge of the Ibrox side, eventually signing no fewer than seven players, with Tom Lawrence among them.

The Welshman arrived on a free transfer from Derby County, where he registered 62 goal contributions – 37 goals and 25 assists – in 185 games for the Rams, becoming one of the most dangerous players in the Championship in the process.

Tom Lawrence

It looked as though he could add some much-needed creativity to a side that struggled domestically during the second half of the 2021/22 season, yet injury problems meant he featured just nine times throughout the entire campaign.

He endured a more productive season last year (more on that later) and thus, his market value, according to Transfermarkt, currently stands at €2.5m (£2.1m), which isn’t bad considering his age and previous injury record.

This value is more than double that of Barron’s. While the youngster will eventually overtake Lawrence with regard to his market value, Van Bronckhorst's signing from two years ago could see Clement secure a decent profit on the former Manchester United starlet.

What the future holds for Tom Lawrence

Last month, news emerged that Van Bronckhorst – newly appointed manager of Besiktas – was eyeing a deal to reunite with Lawrence at the Turkish club this summer.

Lawrence is also attracting attention from Ipswich Town, who are about to embark on their first Premier League season in over 20 years, and with one year left on his current deal at Ibrox, this is perhaps the right time to cash in.

Last season saw the attacking midfielder make 32 appearances in all competitions for the club, scoring three goals and grabbing two assists.

In the Premiership, the 30-year-old also created four big chances, averaged 1.1 key passes and succeeded with 0.6 dribbles – a 64% success rate – per game, not bad for someone who managed to start just 12 league games all season.

Former professional Noel Whelan lauded the midfielder upon signing for the Glasgow side back in 2022, saying: “I think Lawrence is an amazing player. He put the work in at Derby as they were going through a very bad period. I believe he’ll settle right in at Rangers. He was probably one of Derby’s best players for a number of years – with his assists, goals, and that box-to-box nature. He’s a real engine.”

Tom Lawrence

Is it the right time for Clement to cash in and cut ties with the Welshman this summer? Or can he play an important supporting role for the club as they chase Celtic down in pursuit of a first league title in three years?

He may be worth more than double that of Barron at the time of writing, but surely these two players will head in opposite directions with regard to market valuations over the next 12 months.

Lawrence has perhaps failed to live up to the hype upon signing for Rangers. But he could have the chance to redeem himself this term should Clement wish to keep him at the club.

Mark Boucher: South Africa to make 'brave calls' as focus turns to spin in subcontinent conditions

South Africa’s head coach confirmed they will ‘definitely’ play more than one spinner in Karachi

Firdose Moonda25-Jan-2021

Mark Boucher expects Keshav Maharaj to come into his own in the series against Pakistan•BCCI

South Africa are set to make what head coach Mark Boucher called “brave calls,” in deviating from their usual seamer-focused approach to a more spinner-based set-up for the subcontinent. On surfaces Boucher thinks are being prepared for turn, he confirmed that South Africa will “definitely play more than one spinner” in the Karachi Test.”We always revert back to our seaming options because that’s what we get grown up to think,” Boucher said. “But if it looks like it’s going to turn, we must make the right selections and make good cricket calls. I encourage an open mindset rather than going back to the norm. It’s a two-match series, so we can’t go one down and have regrets that we should have played an extra spinner. We’ve got to make the call right now. We’re coming with a mindset that if we want to win a series away from home, we’ve got to make a couple of brave calls.”South Africa have taken three spinners and nine seamers to Pakistan. Kagiso Rabada, who missed the home Tests against Sri Lanka with a groin injury, is set to return, though Boucher does not think reverse swing will play a big role in this series.”We spoke about reverse swing but having gone to the ground only recently, we found the outfield was very green and quite moist. I don’t know how big a weapon reverse swing is going to be,” Boucher said. “The conditions are going to be proper subcontinent conditions and I don’t think there will be a lot of assistance for seamers.”That will mean South Africa will have to decide if they think Anrich Nortje’s pace will be more effective than Lutho Sipamla’s consistency or Lungi Ngidi’s aggression, considering there may only be space for one of the three if Rabada, an allrounder (Wiaan Mulder) and two spinners play. They also have to choose which of the spinners to select and early indications are that the job will be given to Keshav Maharaj, the incumbent, and Tabraiz Shamsi, the wristspinner who has not played a Test since 2018. “Tabraiz has been selected as an attacking, aggressive spinner. If you get given the opportunity to give him a chance in spinning conditions, then why not?” Boucher asked.Related

Boucher also expects Maharaj to come into his own in this series, after operating in the shadows of the quicks in the home Tests. “Kesh is hungry, He didn’t bowl a lot against Sri Lanka, for various reasons like the wicket was more conducive to seam bowling. He is hungry to get stuck in and play a role.”Being our main spin bowler over the last few years, with all respect to him, he didn’t have the best tour of India. We’ve worked on a couple of technical things and he has come on in leaps and bounds. He is itching to get out there, especially in these conditions where he knows he is going to be bowling a lot and potentially could have a series where he could have a massive impact on a win.”Maharaj played in two of South Africa’s three Tests on their 2019 tour to India (he was injured for the last match) and bowled 127 overs, with returns of 6 for 514. Compare that with the haul of R Ashwin (15 wickets) and Ravindra Jadeja (13) and that Rabada was South Africa’s leading bowler with seven wickets, and it’s understandable why Maharaj did not have a great outing. He has had more success in Sri Lanka, where, in 2018, he was the joint leading-wicket taker with 16 wickets across the two Tests, both of which South Africa lost.Mark Boucher suggested South Africa have to wrest control early against a young and rebuilding Pakistan side•Getty Images

For Maharaj, the next frontier is to lead the attack and the team to victory in conditions suited to spin but that’s not the only individual goal South Africa have set. “We are putting a challenge on how many hundreds we want to score,” Boucher said.South Africa recorded their first opening century stand in three years against Sri Lanka over the festive season but only two batsmen scored hundreds: Dean Elgar and Faf du Plessis. That puts the spotlight on Aiden Markram, who struggled against spin in Sri Lanka and India, Rassie van der Dussen, who has gone 43 international innings without a hundred, and Temba Bavuma, whose only Test century came five years ago.”A big innings first score will always be a bonus, because once you get that you get in control of the game,” Boucher said. “The wickets are generally pretty good for the first two or three days and then once you start getting a bit of rough, the ball starts turning. The game tends to speed up towards the end of the game so first innings runs are important.”With all the talk of turn, and last week’s remark by captain Quinton de Kock, that subcontinent teams prepare dustbowls to “target” South Africa, you may expect the general mood is that South Africa are being disadvantaged but Boucher refused to see it that way.”It’s not doctoring, it’s being smart about where you play your opposition and how you can drive home an advantage where you maybe see a weakness in your opposition,” Boucher said.To that end, South Africa have identified how they can look to exploit some of Pakistan’s vulnerabilities. Boucher suggested South Africa have to wrest control early, against a young and rebuilding Pakistan side. “If we can get them doubting themselves early on in the Test match, we must do that. It can play to our advantage. If we can get momentum going our way early on, it will be a big advantage for us.”

Bid incoming: Spurs target £50m goal machine who’d revive Kulusevski

It's set to be a big campaign for Tottenham Hotspur next season, as Ange Postecoglou has had a year to settle into life in the Premier League, and fans will be looking to him to guide the team back into the Champions League at the second time of asking.

However, to do that, he needs Daniel Levy and Co to do their jobs in the remaining weeks of the summer transfer window, as at the moment, they have not sufficiently improved the Australian's squad.

Fortunately, reports suggest that the club are working hard to bring in the right players, one of whom could be a real game-changer for the club and help bring the best out of some of their players, including Dejan Kulusevski.

Tottenham Hotspur transfer news

According to a recent report from TEAMtalk, Tottenham have intensified their interest in Bournemouth striker Dominic Solanke and are ready to make an offer for his services.

The report claims that the Lilywhites are prepared to offer £50m plus a player to help 'sweeten the deal', which could be one of Giovani Lo Celso, Sergio Reguilon, Oliver Skipp, Djed Spence or Alejo Veliz.

This is an ambitious move, as previous reports suggested that the Cherries wanted £65m for their star striker and nothing less.

That said, even at this newer price, this transfer would still represent a significant investment from Spurs, but given Solanke's form last season, it is probably worth making, especially as he could help revive some of the club's other attacking players, such as Kulusevski.

Why Solanke would be a great dream for Kulusevski

Now, when it boils down to it, there is one primary reason Solanke could help get the best back out of Kulusevski next season: his output.

Bournemouth striker Dominic Solanke.

Only two Tottenham players, Son Heung-min and Richarlison, scored more than ten goals across all competitions last season, which means that the club's wingers were starved of an effective goalscorer to play off down the middle.

We can see this regarding the Swedish international from Understat's data, as they have him down as underperforming his expected assists figure in the league by a massive 5.62, whereas last season, when Harry Kane was in the team, he overperformed by 1.52.

So, if the Lilywhites could introduce a Premier League-proven out-and-out number nine into the squad, then we could expect to see the former Juventus ace's assist tally start to creep back up, and luckily, in Solanke, they could have exactly that.

For example, in just 42 appearances for the Cherries last season, the "predatory" marksman, as dubbed by former professional Kris Boyd, scored 21 goals and provided four assists, equating to an impressive average of a goal involvement every 1.68 games.

Moreover, this haul saw him finish joint-fourth in the Premier League's top scorer list and would have been enough to make him the Lilywhites' top goalscorer.

Ultimately, Tottenham need a clinical number nine to move up the table next season, and Kulusevski needs one to get on the end of the chances he creates, and while he might not have the reputation of some of the other strikers on the market at the moment, Solanke has proven that he has what it takes to score bags of goals in the Premier League.

Sean Williams: Playing in Covid-19 times 'not for the faint-hearted'

Sean Williams – “I would love this team to play Tests as often as possible. It’s the ultimate”•Associated Press

Zimbabwe are hoping to begin the process of rebuilding their national side, with at least two confirmed Test series in the next two months, and several white-ball fixtures in the lead up to the 2023 World Cup. The windfall of matches, which starts with two Tests and three T20Is against Afghanistan in the UAE, comes after a lean year for Zimbabwe in which they only played six internationals, none of them Tests. This return to the rigours of the longest format is what captain Sean Williams says his team needs to improve across the board.Related

“I would love this team to play Tests as often as possible. It’s the ultimate,” Williams said. “And having the opportunity to play in Covid-19 times is massive. It’s character building. The challenges you face in Test cricket are huge and if you can overcome those challenges, it prepares you for ODI and T20 cricket. I am very excited to see the Tests against Pakistan (in April) are on, and the Ireland (white-ball) tour and then the qualifiers next year leading into the 2023 World Cup.”Though looking forward to the opportunity to get on the field again, Zimbabwe, like many other teams, are finding that playing during the pandemic brings challenges of its own.”It is difficult. The team sacrifices a lot. They sacrifice family time, and there is a lot of alone time,” Williams said. “The mental aspect is big. The time you spend in the room, with quarantine and testing, over and over and over – it’s extremely tough. You spend a lot of time on your cellphone and your screen time goes up. You spend a lot of time on social media and social media can play mind games with you, especially when it comes to international sport.”The squad have moved from a biosecure environment in Harare, where they were training, to a bubble in Abu Dhabi, their base for the entire Afghanistan series. Although they are no longer confined to their hotel rooms, there are still restrictions on their movement and how much they can interact with each other.”You’ve got trackers around your neck so you can’t spend too much time with each other. After 15 minutes, the beeper goes off and you’ve got to head off,” Williams said. “We are separated a lot of the time. It’s tough. It’s not for the faint-hearted.”But it’s the only way to ensure they get the game time Williams is so desperate for to prompt an upskilling of their players.Zimbabwe have to go back more than two years to remember their last Test win, against Bangladesh in Sylhet in November 2018, and more than a year for the last respectable performance in the format, when they drew against Sri Lanka in Harare. For that reason, the goal for this series is simple: “I want to win. I just want to win. Simple,” Williams said. “And we need to have team goals hour by hour like we had in the Sri Lanka Test match. And make decisions collectively as a group. There will always be a guy that struggles and someone else will have to step up and carry him along.”Williams has backed Prince Masvaure to step up in the absence of several key players•AFP

The emphasis on the collective is in part a response to the number of players Zimbabwe are missing for this series. Six first-choice players – Brendan Taylor, Craig Ervine, Kyle Jarvis, Tendai Chatara, Chamu Chibhabha and PJ Moor – are out of the tour through illness or injury, putting more pressure on Williams and other senior members of the side, like Sikandar Raza.”Missing them is huge. We need them in Test cricket but at the same time, we have a young bunch coming through. We are in a rebuilding process again,” Williams said. “Missing them is huge not only for the juniors but for guys like Raza and myself as well. They are support for the group but they are not here so we have got to get on with it.”The absence of Taylor, Ervine, Chibhabha and Moor, which leaves Zimbabwe with an inexperienced middle-order, will not be used as an excuse for below-par batting. In fact, Williams is specifically targeting improved first-innings scores of “450-500 plus which is what’s expected in a first innings total Test cricket nowadays,” which is much more than Zimbabwe’s recent average of 280 across their last nine Tests. It will be up to Prince Masvaure and Kevin Kasuza, who are established as the top two, to step up and Williams believes they are more than ready for the task. “Their characters speak volumes on them. If I had to pick a team on character and not on talent, they would both be there,” he said. “They have that sacrificial mindset and that makes a big difference when it comes to Test cricket. They are opening doors for themselves and for us. I am extremely happy to have them and I value them massively. The workload that they do and the work ethics they have is massive.”Zimbabwe have several options in the bowling department, particularly when it comes to spinners, but that’s not where Williams’ focus is. Although conditions are expected to favour slower bowling, he wants his quicks to come to the fore against the Afghan line-up. “Pace against them is a big thing so we are hoping our bowlers get an opportunity to have a crack at them,” Williams said. That means Donald Tiripano and Victor Nyauchi will have a big job to do, as will Blessing Muzarabani, who returned to Zimbabwe last year after a Kolpak stint, and will play his first Test since 2018. “It’s a huge thing to have him back. His height, his pace, the bounce that he gets is a big thing for us, especially against a team like Afghanistan,” Williams said. “His leadership skills coming from the county scene is also a big thing for us and our bowling unit.”Both Tests and all three T20Is will be played in Abu Dhabi.

Senior Tottenham first-teamer agrees to leave after Gil with deal imminent

A senior Tottenham first-team player has agreed to leave north London after Bryan Gil, with talks advanced and a deal now described as imminent.

Bryan Gil seals loan move to Girona as he leaves Tottenham

Gil became the latest official departure from Spurs amid a summer of many outgoings, with manager Ange Postecoglou sticking to his guns and orchestrating the overhaul he hinted at earlier this year.

Postecoglou suggested that a few players would be leaving Tottenham this summer, claiming that the club need to undergo drastic change and not everybody will be along for the ride – going on to draw a comparison with Arsenal and Liverpool.

"We need change. Change has to happen," said Postecoglou on Tottenham's need to evolve.

"You can’t want to alter your course and expect the same people are going to be on that. It’s just not going to happen. We’ve had two windows and we’ve had some development of players, for sure, but when I say we’ve still got a long way to go, that’s what I’m talking about.

"It’s impossible to say you’re going to have drastic change and yet expect everyone to be on that journey. It’s not for the want of trying. It’s just that we’re going to play a certain way, we’re going to train a certain way and we’re going to have a certain mindset.

"And that’s not for everyone. Whether it’s Liverpool or Arsenal, if you look at the beginning of their journeys, by the time they win the competition or have success, the team’s almost unrecognisable."

While Gil's move to Girona is temporary on paper, the Spaniard signed a new contract which includes a release clause of around £12.6 million (Fabrizio Romano) – giving the La Liga side or any other suitors a chance to snap him up next summer for a fairly reasonable fee.

The 23-year-old will help to fill the void left by Savinho on his season-long loan, coming after the Brazilian joined Girona's sister club and Premier League champions Man City. Following Gil, it appears very likely that the next player to depart N17 will be right-back Emerson Royal.

Emerson Royal agrees AC Milan terms with Tottenham exit imminent

According to Football Insider and journalist Wayne Veysey, Emerson has agreed terms to join AC Milan and his Spurs exit is imminent.

Talks are finally at an advanced stage for the 25-year-old, with Milan having been negotiating over a deal to sign the Brazilian for a long time. The Rossoneri had a bid rejected for him "several weeks ago", but both Tottenham and the Serie A side are close to shaking hands on a total agreement.

Postecoglou has apparently deemed Emerson surplus to requirements, despite the lack of an alternative for Pedro Porro on that side of his backline.

Reports in Italy back this claim from FI and Veysey, with Gianluca Di Marzio writing that Milan have submitted an improved offer of around £11.6-12.6 million with add-ons and hope they can finalise a deal this week.
