TERCEIRO MELHOR VISITANTE DO BRASILEIRÃO

He’s like Salah: Aston Villa chasing late move for Joao Felix upgrade

Aston Villa have established their dominance as one of the top sides in the Premier League of late, with their transfer strategy certainly confirming this.

A couple of years ago, there would have been next to no chance that the club could lure players of such quality as Ian Maatsen and Amadou Onana to the Midlands. Champions League participation has, of course, given the club an advantage over most, which Unai Emery has utilised this summer.

Despite their success in bolstering their squad, the manager has missed out on a few transfer targets throughout the window, most notably João Félix.

Aston Villa's pursuit of Joao Felix

One transfer saga that stretched on far too long was Villa’s pursuit of the Portuguese talent, one that ended in failure.

At the end of July, Emery was still showing plenty of interest in the player, who spent last season on loan at Barcelona.

Joao Felix for Barcelona.

The Spaniard viewed Felix as a ‘dream target’, according to Caught Offside, and it looked as though the incentive of playing in Europe’s premier club competition would seal the deal for the attacking midfielder.

When Chelsea began to showcase their interest, flaunting their deep pockets, it was dream over for Emery. Not long after initial interest was confirmed, Felix joined the Stamford Bridge side for the second time following his six-month loan spell during the second half of the 2022/23 season.

He cost the club around £46.3m from Atlético, and it remains to be seen whether the move will be a success.

It is clear Emery has moved on from missing out on the former Benfica starlet as he eyes a swoop for a current Barcelona winger, who is better than Felix.

Aston Villa chase move for Brazilian sensation

According to Caught Offside, Villa are exploring their options with regard to bringing in a new striker between now and Friday evening.

Names such as Nicolas Jackson, Tammy Abraham and Dominic Calvert-Lewin have been discussed, but it could be difficult to bring any of them in before the deadline.

Barcelona winger Raphinha.

Elsewhere in the report, Villa could strike a last-minute deal for a new winger, as Raphinha is currently on their radar.

This would be an exciting signing, giving Emery some quality out wide to add to the likes of Leon Bailey and Morgan Rogers. Not only that, but he could be a better signing than Felix…

Raphinha’s statistics last season

Last season was certainly a successful one from a personal point of view for the Brazilian. Across 37 matches in all competitions, he scored ten goals while registering 13 assists, becoming one of the most dangerous members of the first-team squad.

Among his teammates, Raphinha ranked second for goals and assists (15) in La Liga last season for the Catalan club, along with ranking third for shots per game (2.1), third for big chances created (11) and for key passes per game (1.5), demonstrating his attacking qualities for the club.

Compare these statistics to those that Felix registered, however, and it is clear who enjoyed the more productive season.

The Portuguese star registered 16 goal contributions – ten goals and six assists – which was seven fewer than Raphinha across the entire season.

When compared to his teammates, Felix ranked fourth for goals and assists (ten), fourth for shots per game (2), seventh for big chances created (six) and a lowly 14th for key passes per game (0.6), certainly proving that the Brazilian enjoyed the more successful season with regard to these statistics.

If Emery did manage to lure the current Barcelona star to the Midlands, it could be a real statement of intent before the window closes on Friday evening.

Furthermore, the former Leeds United winger is similar in style to a current Premier League icon – Mohamed Salah.

Raphinha could be Villa’s own Mohamed Salah

The Egyptian has forged his way into Premier League folklore with his exploits with Liverpool since arriving in Merseyside seven years ago.

Since then, Salah has made 351 competitive appearances for the Anfield side, scoring 213 goals along with grabbing a further 90 assists. This works out as a goal involvement once every 1.1 games, a simply outrageous statistic.

With two goals already this season in as many matches, it appears as though he isn’t slowing down, not right now anyway.

According to FBref, Salah is currently the ninth-most comparable player to Raphinha. Having someone who can register the sort of numbers that the current Liverpool magician will be a huge advantage in Villa’s pursuit of glory.

The duo registered similar domestic statistics last season with regard to assists (nine vs ten), shots per 90 (3.82 vs 3.8), shot-creating actions per 90 (5.86 vs 4.94), successful take-ons (24 vs 27) and goal-creating actions (13 vs 20), showcasing their effectiveness going forward.

Raphinha – who currently earns £200k-per-week at Barcelona – would be an incredible signing, especially as it looks like he is just entering his prime years as a player.

Raphinha-Leeds-Stats

The 27-year-old has plenty of English top-flight experience during his spell at Leeds United, playing 65 games in the top tier, scoring 17 times while chipping in with 12 assists too, meaning he wouldn’t have to settle in.

His former teammate Daniel James lavished praise on the South American winger during their spell in Yorkshire, describing him as a "magician".

High praise indeed and Raphinha has gone from strength to strength in recent years, starring for Barcelona and playing for Brazil during the 2022 World Cup.

Much will depend on the fee Barcelona will demand for one of their star assets should Emery decide to make a move, but if it is realistic, then the club should be doing all they can to lure him back to England.

Onana repeat: Aston Villa have discussed signing "monster" striker

He has 12 months left on his contract and could move before the deadline.

South Africa seamers bundle out West Indies after Quinton de Kock's 96

Wiaan Mulder picked up 3 for 1, and Kagiso Rabada and Lungi Ngidi took two each to give South Africa a lead of 149

South Africa seized the advantage in the second Test against West Indies with a first-innings lead of 149. After being dismissed for just under 300 in the morning session, their attack plucked West Indies out for 149 on a wicket-filled day. Fifteen fell in total, although conditions were not as helpful for swing as they were on the first day. There was some seam movement and decent bounce on offer but as was the case in the first Test, the West Indies batters’ shot selection let them down against a disciplined visiting attack.Jermaine Blackwood top-scored with 49 but was some distance off South Africa’s best batter. Quinton de Kock fell four short of a second successive century and remains the main difference between the two sides. de Kock could even have the opportunity to add to his series tally when South Africa bat again.Kraigg Brathwaite was dismissed on review off the first ball of the innings when he followed a Kagiso Rabada length delivery down the leg side. Although the on-field umpire was not convinced, UltraEdge showed the ball had brushed the West Indies captain’s glove on its way through to de Kock.Watch cricket on ESPN+

The WI vs SA series is available in the US on ESPN+. Subscribe to ESPN+ and tune in to the match.

Lungi Ngidi shared the new ball and did not take much longer to strike. He had Kieran Powell lbw off the first ball of his second over, when he beat Powell’s inside edge and hit him in front of middle stump. Powell reviewed unsuccessfully to leave West Indies 8 for 2. Ngidi left the field after that over with an upset stomach but returned later in the session only to leave again later on.Anrich Nortje took over from Ngidi and had Roston Chase caught by Kyle Verreynne at short leg. West Indies almost lost their fourth wicket soon after when Sarel Erwee, on the field as a substitute for de Kock who left with cramps with Verreynne taking over the keeping duties, stationed at short leg received a Kyle Mayers’ pull in the rib cage. Erwee could not hold on to the chance but Mayers was dismissed soon after when he chased a wider, full delivery from Keshav Maharaj and edged to Aiden Markram at slip.Shai Hope and Blackwood put on 43 for the fifth wicket, and Hope posted his highest Test score in 15 innings but was bitterly disappointed when he inside-edged Ngidi onto his stumps.Jason Holder was caught at gully off Rabada and Joshua Da Silva had an unhappy 23rd birthday when he nicked off Wiaan Mulder to ensure all the South African bowlers had at least one wicket to their names. Kemar Roach, who had done his bit with the ball earlier in the day, went the same way and two balls later Jayden Seales was caught at leg slip to leave Mulder with figures of 3 for 1. In the next over, Blackwood top-edged Maharaj to end West Indies innings, five minutes before the close of play.Earlier, Roach and Mayers finished with three wickets apiece as West Indies forced a South African collapse of 5 for 59 to enjoy their best period of play in the match so far.West Indies took the second new ball immediately as play began on day two, half an hour late after a morning shower, and shared it between Seales and Holder. But it was only when Roach was introduced that West Indies got their first wicket. He angled a delivery in towards Mulder, who moved forward to defend and outside-edged to Da Silva.Maharaj hung tough as de Kock took the score past 250 and rotated the strike well but his time ran out when he tried to drive Holder as the ball moved away from him and he was caught behind, sparking a mini-collapse. Mayers got de Kock to slash at a wide delivery and edge it to Hope in the gully. Two overs later, Mayers struck again when Nortje tried to flick him over midwicket but chipped it to Seales, who was perfectly positioned for the chance. Just before lunch, Roach claimed his third when Ngidi lobbed him to midwicket but may feel the line-up undid much of his and the rest of the attack’s good work.

Newcastle star was worth just £2m in 2023, his value’s now risen by 1350%

Newcastle United have claimed seven points from their opening three Premier League fixtures and stand a good chance of stretching into the top four with victory at Wolverhampton Wanderers on Sunday.

The growth of the past several years has been remarkable, Eddie Howe the architect of Newcastle's PIF-fuelled rise. The transfer dealings have been a thing to behold, for the most part, with the likes of Bruno Guimaraes, Anthony Gordon, Alexander Isak and Sven Botman among the stars to have made a significant impact.

Newcastle United's Anthony Gordon and Alexander Isak

But it's not all external. The Magpies are flying and have benefitted from some revived existing players and one or two homegrown talents. None have been more impressive than Lewis Miley.

Lewis Miley's 2023/24 season

Miley made his debut for Newcastle on the final day of the 2022/23 campaign, clipping the crossbar during a 1-1 draw against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.

It was a statement start, and though Newcastle were knocked by persistent injuries and absence last year, particularly in midfield, the "elegant" teenager, as hailed by talent scout Jacek Kulig, used the opportunity to impress.

The fact that he only turned 18 in May is almost laughable, for here is a player with experience aplenty in the Premier League and Champions League, hailed for his "clever" play by journalist Henry Winter, who also praised his precocious maturity.

Across his 17 top-flight appearances last year – 14 starts – the rangy midfielder scored one goal and claimed three assists, also completing 84% of his passes, winning 54% of his ground duels and averaging 1.9 tackles and 4.6 ball recoveries per game, as per Sofascore.

It's hardly surprising that his market value has shot up in no time at all.

Lewis Miley's market value in 2024/25

Miley's meteoric rise bears testament not only to his natural-born talent and studious approach to his craft, but Howe's expert ability to guide him to the fore and allow him to flourish. He really does look to be older than his years.

The starlet's performance against Chelsea back in May 2023 put his name on the map, but he was still a minnow in both stature and market value.

According to Football Transfers, Miley was worth just £2m at the time, though this still suggested recognition of his qualities. Fast-track to the present, and it would be fair to say that he's eclipsed expectations.

Indeed, Miley now boasts a market value of £32m, which, to put it another way, stands as a 1350% rise in little over a year, which is astounding but deserved for a top, top talent.

What does the future hold? The 18-year-old is blessed with technical skills and intelligence. Come back next year, we might just be writing once again about a player defying the odds and soaring toward the apex of the Premier League's talent pool.

Spurs sold striker for £6.7m, now he’s scored as many as Kane this season

What is there to say about Harry Kane that has already been uttered? Quite frankly, very little.

The striking sensation – who famously left Arsenal behind as a boy – is now a Tottenham icon and leads Spurs’ scoring charts.

If ever you needed any further evidence of his goalscoring prowess, the England international is also his nation’s top scorer, topping a certain Wayne Rooney a few years ago now.

Harry Kane at Euro 2024

Kane continues to go from strength to strength and since moving to Bayern Munich last season after finally leaving Spurs behind, he has been a man-possessed.

Kane’s time at Bayern so far

With Kane in tow, Tottenham failed to win a trophy. With Kane in tow, Bayern Munich failed to win a trophy.

Perhaps it’s just him? Despite all of the goals and indeed the personal accolades, the striker’s misfortune is quite incredible.

He’s lost a Champions League final, two European Championship finals, a World Cup semi-final and he’s not scored in any of them. Perhaps Kane is not made for the biggest of occasions then.

We jest, of course, but it was rather typical that Bayern’s 11-year dominance of the Bundesliga came to an end the campaign Kane joined.

That said, the centre-forward enjoyed a remarkable season himself, scoring a staggering 44 goals in 45 games for the German outfit. Now 31, however, the former Spurs man is showing no signs of slowing down having already found the net on four occasions in three top-flight games this season. It’s safe to say he’s pretty damn good.

On that note, however, there is a player who recently left Spurs who can now boast Kane-like numbers.

Spurs may have sold their next Kane

Over the summer supporters got a wonderful opportunity to watch teenage sensation, Mikey Moore, in action.

Now 17 years of age, the attacker is one of the best young properties in the Premier League right now and actually found the net over pre-season, notably scoring impressively in the clash with Hearts.

Mikey Moore makes his Tottenham debut

Moore looks destined for a bright future in the game but as he will know, plenty have tried and failed to cross the bridge between academy and first-team football.

Dane Scarlett is currently at Championship side Oxford United on loan while a certain Troy Parrott is plying his trade in the Netherlands.

The Irishman was sold in a permanent deal over the summer, a move that was reported to cost Dutch side AZ Alkmaar a paltry £6.7m to finalise.

So, how is the 22-year-old faring in the Eredivisie so far?

Troy Parrott’s time at AZ Alkmaar

Well, it just so happens that the Irishman is one of the most prolific forwards on the continent right now.

Having swapped London for the Zaan district in the Netherlands, the forward has quickly made a name for himself in his new setting.

Parrott happened to spend last term on loan at Rotterdam club Excelsior where he thrived, scoring 17 times in 32 outings across all competitions. It would appear that he impressed those in the Eredivisie, with Alkmaar shelling out to sign him over the summer.

Since then he’s continued to score on a regular basis, finding the net on four occasions in five matches. That stat might be a tad misleading, however, as all four of those goals came in the same match.

During a staggering 9-1 win for AZ against Herenveen last weekend, Parrott was the main source of goals as he beat the goalkeeper on four occasions. To make this story even more intriguing for those of a Spurs persuasion, who was managing the opposition? A certain Robin van Persie.

The former Arsenal and Manchester United star certainly knows a thing or two about scoring goals but even he would have been blown away by the Irishman’s performance.

Such a tally of goals means that he’s now scored as many as Kane has in the Bundesliga for Bayern Munich this term.

Tottenham’s record scorer netted his own hat-trick last weekend, putting Holstein Kiel to the sword in a 6-1 drubbing.

While those incredible results were happening, Postecoglou’s men would go onto lose to their fierce rivals Arsenal. They did not score but you can bet your house on the fact they would have done with Kane in the team.

While they will sill no doubt lust after his return, they can probably be secure in the fact that they sold Parrott at the right time. That’s unless he goes onto become a world-beater in the years to come.

Spurs could axe Johnson by unleashing "outstanding" academy teen instead

Stuart Broad has been named England’s vice-captain for the Test series against New Zealand, which starts at Lord’s on Wednesday.Ben Stokes is Joe Root’s usual deputy, and stood in for him in the first Test against West Indies last summer, but will miss the New Zealand series through injury, while Jos Buttler – Stokes’ predecessor, and Eoin Morgan’s deputy in limited-overs cricket – has been rested following the IPL.Related

James Anderson also has experience as vice-captain, having filled the role during the 2017-18 tours to Australia and New Zealand, but England have instead opted to give Broad the role for this series. Broad has some experience of captaining England, leading them in 27 T20Is and three ODIs between 2011 and 2014, but this is his first official leadership role in the Test side.”Stuart has been a senior player within this group for a long time now,” Root said. “He speaks extremely well, he’s got a very good cricket brain and he’s got captaincy experience in the short format. He’s the right man to take that on in Ben and Jos’ absence. He’s an integral part as a senior player and very much a leader within that bowling group. It’s a great opportunity for him to take that on.”He’s at real peace with his game at the minute. He’s got a really good understanding of how he’s going to operate. He obviously is very comfortable and understands his role within the squad and the team and knows what’s required of him, and sets a very good example to younger players within the group.”In our sport, you have to be able to deal with setbacks and have to be able to come back and respond well to that. It’s part and parcel of the professional game but he’s done it exceptionally well. You don’t play as many games as he has and have the record he does without having some difficult moments in your career, and a lot of the time it’s how you respond to them. He’s always done that extremely well and that’s why he’s such a wonderful player and one of the best players in the world.”James Bracey will make his debut at Lord’s•AFP via Getty Images

Broad’s appointment as vice-captain acts as confirmation that he will not be rested for Wednesday’s first Test, and while Root stopped short of saying that he would definitely play in the second Test, he appears likely to do so.”We’ll have to wait and see because you don’t know how this game is going to go but it certainly gives him a better chance,” Root said. “If there are injuries or anything then you just never know, but it’s a great opportunity for him to take that on, and hopefully it means he can get a run in the team.”While Root confirmed that Broad would play – and that James Bracey will make his debut as a wicketkeeper-batter – he did not announce the rest of England’s team in his press conference at lunchtime on Tuesday, and would not confirm whether either Ollie Robinson or Jack Leach would play.”We haven’t quite got that clarity as to exactly what we want to go in with yet in terms of the balance of the side and how that looks,” he said. “When you’re missing a pivotal allrounder like Ben Stokes and the other allrounders that have been round the squad for the last couple of years, it does change things slightly, and we’re going to have to look at doing things slightly differently. That provides a great opportunity for others to come in and show their worth.”
