When it rains… Everton’s wretched start to the season drags on, with a forlorn Sean Dyche watching from the sideline as Ashley Young’s sudden death spot kick was saved in the penalty shootout against Southampton in the Carabao Cup.
Everton had taken the lead in the first half after Abdoulaye Doucoure nodded home after 20 minutes, though Taylor Harwood-Bellis restored parity for the visitors shortly after the 30-minute mark, notching a thumping header of his own.
Ashley Young looks dejected for Everton
The hosts had opportunities to win but will rue some poor finishing and an inability to gain control throughout the affair – Southampton dominated and claimed 74% total possession.
Still, the chances were there. Jesper Lindstrom had the pick(s) of the bunch and will hang his head after a match that could have marked an emphatic introduction to Merseyside.
Jesper Lindstrom let Sean Dyche down
Lindstrom signed for the Toffees this summer, moving from Napoli on an initial loan deal that could extend to a permanent stay down the line.
He was the most prominent forward against Southampton, with his 40 touches more than any other Everton player beyond the defence.
He did, however, miss form great chances to score, missing two big opportunities. The 24-year-old Dane clearly brings some new dynamism to the table, but he will need to take some loping strides if he is to earn a regular starting berth in the team.
He wasn’t the only one to struggle, however. Indeed, at least he fired away at the Saints goal. Iliman Ndiaye put in a decent showing in the Carabao Cup but failed to actually offer much attacking substance.

Ndiaye, another summer addition, netted in the previous round against Doncaster Rovers but failed to add to that first strike last night.

Writing in his post-match ratings, Liverpool World’s Will Rooney gave him a poor 5/10 score and said of the Senegalese: ‘Had a couple of moments when he got fans off their seats with the ball at his feet in the first half. Moved into a centre-forward role midway through the second period but couldn’t really impact the game. Bagged the third penalty in the shootout.’
Everton's Iliman Ndiaye
Make no mistake, Ndiaye is invariably dangerous due to his fleet-footed and electric motions, but he needed to offer more having failed to register a single key pass or have a shot at goal in normal time. It wasn’t… toothless, per se, but it was a performance that left plenty to be desired against a Southampton side that could have been there for the taking.
He has all the tools to hit that vein of potency that would really propel him to upper standing in the Everton squad, but the likes of Dominic Calvert-Lewin can’t do it all, and if he fails to take a shot or even make an impactful pass, he won’t elevate to the next level.

Essex’s hopes in balance after subsiding to below-par total despite Tom Westley half-century

An unbeaten 62 by Ravi Bopara guided Sussex Sharks to a crucial six-wicket win over his former club Essex Eagles in the Vitality Blast at Hove. The 36-year-old, who spent 17 years at Chelmsford before heading to Sussex last year, came in after skipper Luke Wright departed for a first-ball duck and supervised a successful chase of 147 with nine balls to spare. Victory lifted Sussex into second place in the South Group and one win from their two remaining games, away to Hampshire and Kent, will be enough to secure a place in the quarter-finals. Essex will need to win both their games to have a chance of making the last eight.Sussex were in trouble after two of their other experienced players, Travis Head and David Wiese, departed cheaply to leave them 67 for 4 at halfway. But after a skittish start Delray Rawlins gave Bopara impressive support in a stand of 85 in 8.4 overs which took the game away from Essex, despite miserly bowling by spinners Simon Harmer and Aron Nijjar, who had combined figures of 3 for 34 from 7.3 overs.Bopara’s 62 came off 46 balls with eight boundaries while Rawlins produced some fireworks at the end, winning the game with a straight six off Nijjar which took him to a 29-ball fifty, with four sixes and three fours.Earlier, Tom Westley made a half-century on his return after missing Essex’s six previous games but when he was brilliantly caught by Head running in from midwicket in the 16th over the Eagles nosedived, losing six wickets for 22 in 23 balls in a total of 146 for 9.Westley and Michael Pepper had put on 72 from 52 balls for the second wicket after Ollie Robinson had Adam Wheater caught at extra cover with his first ball. Pepper made 38 before he was beaten in the flight by 16-year-old legspinner Archie Lenham and Westley contributed 53 off 45 balls, with a six and four boundaries, but once he went a combination of tight bowling and excellent fielding put Sussex in control.Chris Jordan, back after recovering from a groin injury, took 3 for 30 and showed all his experience while Robinson, who had to self-isolate for ten days after a team-mate tested positive for Covid-19, picked up 2 for 15 in his first game back.Essex could only manage four boundaries and a six in the second half of their innings as well as Harrison Ward and Bopara also took outstanding catches in the deep to back up some accurate bowling.

In May 2020 Australia were ranked No.1 in Tests and T20Is. The Test team had retained the Ashes away and won seven consecutive Tests at home. They had also won four consecutive T20I series including away victories in India and South Africa. Since the Covid-19 pandemic hit they have lost five consecutive T20I series and a home Test series to India with reports of tensions between coach Justin Langer and the players running rampant in the media. Here’s how it unfolded.September 2020Australia toured England for three T20Is and three ODIs with a full-strength squad, their first assignment since Covid-19 halted world cricket. In the first T20I they needed 39 runs from 39 balls with nine wickets in hand and lost. Australia also dropped the second game to lose the series but won the dead rubber. They then won the opening ODI before succumbing to another batting collapse from a winning position in game two. Langer gave the group a verbal lashing post-match for not learning from their mistakes in the opening T20I. It secured the desired response in the decider with Australia pulling off a stunning chase off the back of twin centuries from Glenn Maxwell and Alex Carey to win the series, which the coach described as one of the best series wins he’s been involved in.November 2020 Australia thumped India in the first two ODIs of the home summer thanks to two masterclasses from Steve Smith to win the ODI series with a game to spare.Steven Smith made back-to-back centuries against India•Getty Images
December 2020-January 2021 Injuries and the need to rest players from the biosecure bubbles saw Australia lose the T20I series with Aaron Finch, David Warner, Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc, Kane Richardson, and Marcus Stoinis missing matches. Australia were back to full strength for the Test series and won the first match in Adelaide when they bowled India out for 36. But they lost the series from there against a second-string India side with Virat Kohli, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Shami, Ravindra Jadeja, and R Ashwin all missing the decider at the Gabba. Australia’s batters failed twice in Melbourne, they dropped critical catches on the final day in Sydney to snatch a draw from the jaws of victory, before the bowlers ran out of gas at the Gabba with Shubman Gill and Rishabh Pant engineering a famous chase to claim the series.Related

Finch: Dressing room leaks about Langer 'disappointing' and 'not ideal'
Langer addressed 'confronting' team review with squad ahead of tour
Team rumblings are a 'wake-up call' which Langer won't ignore
February 2021 Reports emerged in the papers in Australia of tensions boiling over between the players and the coach during the Gabba Test match suggesting players were concerned about the team environment. Langer was shocked by the media reports but said it was “a wake-up call”.Australia then had to select two squads for simultaneous Test and T20I tours in South Africa and New Zealand respectively. Langer was to take charge of the Test squad while senior assistant Andrew McDonald was tasked with leading the T20I squad. A first-choice Test squad was chosen but the tour of South Africa was abandoned due to Cricket Australia’s concerns over South Africa’s biosecurity protocols. Australia lost the opening two games in New Zealand before Finch and Maxwell stood tall to level the series at 2-2. But the batting failed to fire in the decider and they lost the series 3-2.There wasn’t always much to cheer for Australia’s T20 side•Getty Images
June 2021 Langer joined the contracted players at a pre-tour camp on the Gold Coast ahead of back-to-back limited-overs tours of the Caribbean and Bangladesh. The findings of an internal review into Australia’s performance against India, conducted by leadership consultant Tim Ford, were presented to the group. Langer addressed the findings with the players, something Finch described as “confronting” for the coach but Finch the meeting was successful and the group was “behind him 100 percent”.July 2021 Australia toured the West Indies for five T20Is and three ODIs minus, Warner, Cummins, Smith, Maxwell, Stoinis, Kane Richardson, Jhye Richardson, and Daniel Sams who all withdraw due to bio-bubble fatigue or injury following the postponement of the IPL. Australia’s selectors opted to leave Marnus Labuschagne in England and Cameron Green at home and a host of others with international experience weren’t selected. The T20I team again disintegrated from a winning position in the first game of the tour and loses the series 4-1. Finch suffered a knee injury and was forced to withdraw from the ODI series. Carey was promoted to captain one of the most inexperienced ODI teams Australia has ever fielded and they claim a series win 2-1 despite the series being interrupted due to a Covid-19 scare.Australia’s last five T20I series•ESPNcricinfo Ltd
August 2021 Australia traveled to Bangladesh without Finch who headed home to have knee surgery. Matthew Wade took over as captain but the side capitulated on difficult batting surfaces to lose the series 4-1. They would have lost 5-0 save for an onslaught from Dan Christian in the third game and were bowled out for 62 in the last match. Two days after Australia arrived home, with the players and staff in hotel quarantine, the published a report of an incident that took place in Australia’s team hotel during the Bangladesh tour. Australia team manager Gavin Dovey was involved in a heated exchange with Cricket Australia’s digital journalist who was inside the Australian team’s bio-bubble as part of the touring party. Dovey was upset that a video had been posted on Cricket Australia’s website of Bangladesh celebrating their first-ever series win over Australia. Langer, a close confidant of Dovey’s, spoke briefly but firmly to the journalist in the immediate aftermath before the pair cleared the air the following day.The report sparked a flurry of media speculation about Langer’s coaching style and of tensions between the coach and the players resurfaced. Finch said the leaks from the dressing room were “disappointing” and “not a good look.” It led Cricket Australia CEO Nick Hockley to issue a statement supporting Langer and confirming he would continue on through the T20 World Cup and the Ashes. Hockley and CA chairman Earl Eddings held an emergency zoom call with Australia’s three playing leaders Tim Paine, Finch, and Cummins to discuss the tensions with the coach.Paine spoke on his SEN podcast two days later vowing that the players would work with Langer for the summer ahead.

Newcastle United are showing serious interest in signing a player who has been compared to Liverpool superstar Mohamed Salah, according to a new transfer report.
Newcastle transfer news
The Magpies continue to be linked with new signings, considering a relatively underwhelming summer transfer window, with Brentford attacker Bryan Mbeumo emerging as a rumoured target. The Cameroonian has enjoyed a highly impressive start to the new Premier League season, scoring five goals in six appearances.
Borussia Dortmund ace Karim Adeyemi has also been mentioned as an option for Newcastle, with sporting director Paul Mitchell believed to be battling his predecessor Dan Ashworth for his signature, as the latter looks to bring him to Manchester United.
Karim Adeyemi for Borussia Dortmund.
Meanwhile, Monaco attacking midfielder Maghnes Akliouche has also been backed to join the Magpies in the near future, with Mitchell knowing the 22-year-old well after working alongside him at the Ligue 1 club, prior to moving to St James’ Park in the summer.
In terms of the futures of current Newcastle players, a recent report has claimed that the club are looking to tie Sean Longstaff down to a new deal alongside Alexander Isak and Anthony Gordon, as they look to retain the services of key figures moving forward.
Newcastle want to sign "outstanding" player
According to a new claim from Give Me Sport, Newcastle are among the clubs interested in signing Omar Marmoush from Eintracht Frankfurt, with West Ham and Aston Villa also in the mix. The 25-year-old’s “prolific performances during the early stages of the campaign” are seen as the reason for such a willingness to snap him up, as he potentially moves “to the English top flight for the first time in his career next year”.
Marmoush would be such an eye-catching signing by Newcastle, with his performances so far this season showing exactly what he is capable of. The Egyptian has six goals and three assists in just five Bundesliga appearances, as well as netting once in the Europa League.
His current manager, Dino Toppmoller, has heaped praise on him:“He’s very difficult to defend due to his pace and how fast he can run deep. He can also sneak in from close range, exhibit a great touch and play some great balls. He’s in outstanding form at the moment, and he’s feeling comfortable. That’s the key to his success these days. He feels comfortable with this club and the group, and is thus a key component for us.”
The fact that Marmoush has been compared to Liverpool legend Salah says so much about his ability, being backed as his heir for Egypt at international level, and Newcastle should see him as a brilliant attacking option.

Promising signs for the Magpies…
ByTom Cunningham Oct 3, 2024
Capable of thriving out on the left wing or in an attacking midfield role, the Frankfurt hero is at the perfect age to come in and hit the ground running at St James’ immediately, so Mitchell should do all he can to strike a deal in one of the upcoming transfer windows.
