Inexperienced players 'learning on the job effectively' the biggest plus, says Henry Nicholls

“If you’re able to stick in there, then it is actually tough for them as well,” Nicholls says about the tough Dhaka tracks

In the T20I series opener, New Zealand combusted to 60 all out – their joint-lowest total in the format. In the second match, they came within one hit of toppling Bangladesh. Then, in the third, which was played on the same pitch that was rolled out for the first fixture, New Zealand overcame a middle-order meltdown to put up 128 for 5, which proved 52 too many for Bangladesh. Henry Nicholls, who was at the heart of New Zealand’s recovery on Sunday, was particularly impressed with the improvement shown by an inexperienced side.”Yeah, it’s great. From where we started in the first match and right through yesterday, the conditions have all varied in each game, which is a challenge in itself,” Nicholls said at a media interaction. “I think, as a group, we’re pretty inexperienced, and it’s been great to see guys learning on the job effectively.Related

“Tom [Latham], as captain, has been really clear with the guys and, I guess, knowing it is tough and also looking for us to find ways to make improvements and if we keep doing that each game, those results will come. So, it’s obviously nice to get that yesterday and I guess for the guys to really feel that to turn the tables on Bangladesh and put them under a little bit of pressure that it can be tough for them as well.”Nicholls said that New Zealand’s strong comeback and ability to adapt fairly quickly to tricky conditions would also serve them well on the forthcoming tour of Pakistan, which begins a week after the end of the Bangladesh trip.”Obviously, incredibly disappointing and a tough way to start [the tour]. When we look back now, we certainly reflect on how tough that wicket was,” Nicholls said. “Certainly, one of the toughest wickets I’ve ever played on in my career and I just think, as a group, we stuck together and we have a lot of trust in each other to know that we will make improvements and also just that if we do what we want to do and execute it in our way, then we were able to turn the tables a little bit on Bangladesh.”And yesterday it showed that if you’re able to stick in there, then it is actually tough for them as well. Moving forward to Pakistan as well for this group, [it’s a] good lesson in terms of that – just sticking in and knowing that we do have the right skills and it’s just about adapting to the different situations.”Nicholls had played just five T20Is before the Bangladesh tour, but the others around him are even less experienced, and he is being seen as a senior figure – along with Latham – on this tour. In the third T20I, Nicholls absorbed the pressure and saw New Zealand through to a competitive total by sharing an unbroken 66-run partnership for the sixth wicket with Tom Blundell.A fit-again Finn Allen got on top of the Bangladesh attack in the powerplay in the third T20I•AFP/Getty Images

“Yeah, certainly getting into this tour, that’s something I was excited about,” Nicholls said of the additional responsibility. “Being more of an experienced player and knowing the stuff on the park is important but touring in general – a lot of young guys are probably on their first overseas tour… So for me and the likes of Tom, as captain, and for the other experienced guys, just sharing that knowledge with them and really enjoying the role of taking a bit more responsibility.”As I said, the cricket is important, but when you come to these parts of the world, you’re spending a lot of time at the hotel and a lot of time with each other, so you try to make sure that everyone is pretty level – good or bad – and knowing that there’s always another challenge on the horizon, that’s two days’ time for us.”New Zealand have had skittish starts with the bat in each of the three T20Is, but Nicholls reckoned that the batting line-up would draw confidence from the way a fit-again Finn Allen got on top of the Bangladesh attack in the powerplay. Allen dashed out of the crease to the second ball he faced and belted Mahedi Hasan down the ground for four. In all, he cracked three fours in six balls, hitting the spinners out of the attack, before Mustafizur Rahman had him chipping a grippy offcutter to mid-on for 15 off ten.”Having Finn in the line-up – the way he came out yesterday and the way he plays and the way he dominates attacks, he gave the guys a lot of confidence,” Nicholls said. “You see, he doesn’t lack a lot of confidence, which probably helps. Even throughout the Super Smash, the way he performed and got his opportunity with the Black Caps and in the Bangladesh series, he was full of confidence.”He obviously has an amazing skillset and he’s already been in environments like the IPL and in England [T20 Blast and the Hundred] as well, which only further enhances it for him. He’s certainly got that X-factor, which he can go from ball one. In these conditions, getting off to a flier gets you ahead in the game, which is massively important.”

Man Utd now consider eye-watering 2025 move for £612k-p/w title-winning duo

Manchester United are reportedly keeping a close eye on a pair of German superstars as they look to catapult themselves back up towards the top of English football and challenge for the Premier League again.

Manchester United's summer business under scrutiny

Despite spending significant sums over the summer, Erik ten Hag is under massive pressure and Manchester United are 14th in the Premier League, having scored just five goals in their seven games so far. It comes in the wake of a summer in which the club once again backed the Dutch manager, shelling out £180m on five new players headlined by the arrivals of Manuel Ugarte from PSG and Leny Yoro from Lille.

Despite the heavy spending, United’s CEO Omar Berrada has suggested that the Red Devils won’t be able to challenge for the title until 2028.

“It’s not a 10-year plan. The fans would run out of patience if it was a 10-year plan. But it’s certainly a three-year plan to get there”, he revealed.

“To think that we’re going to be playing football as good as Manchester City played against Real Madrid last season by next year is not sensible. And if we give people false expectations, then they will get disappointed. So the key thing is our trajectory, so that people can see that we’re making progress.

“I think it’s the club’s 150-year anniversary in 2028… if our trajectory is leading to a very good place in that sort of timeframe then we’d be very happy with that.”

Despite the realistic rather than optimistic goal, the club will still be aiming to recruit the best talent in world football to Old Trafford, and now are reportedly monitoring a potentially massive double deal.

Manchester United plot De Ligt & Mazraoui repeat

That comes as Sky Sports journalist Florian Plettenberg has revealed that Manchester United are once again looking to snatch unwanted stars from Bayern Munich. This summer, the Red Devils shelled out around 60m euros to bring Matthijs de Ligt and Noussair Mazraoui to Old Trafford from Bavaria, and are now looking to repeat the trick for two of their former title-winning teammates.

That comes in the shape of Leroy Sané, who is out of contract at the end of the season as things stand, as well as out-of-favour midfielder Leon Goretzka, who has featured just once in the Bundesliga under Vincent Kompany this season and was publicly dubbed unwanted over the summer.

The report claims that the club are “monitoring” the duo, and that Goretzka is an “interesting candidate” for a potential winter move, while former City winger Sané is free to enter negotiations over a free transfer in the same window.

It is added that both are keen to stay at Bayern as things stand, but with Goretzka unfavoured by Kompany and Sané likely to have to take a pay cut to do so, that could change quickly.

When fit, the Germany winger has been a key man for Bayern, with Jamal Musiala dubbing him “one of the best wingers in the world” earlier in the year. Even if both he and Goretzka were to come cheaply, their wages would be another stumbling block, with the pair taking home a combined £612k per week at the Allianz Arena.

With both earning around £300,000 a week, it would put them among Manchester United’s highest earners were they to be paid the same in the northwest.

There is the added complication of European football, with United not currently on course to be playing Conference League football next season, let alone the Champions League football that the pair have become accustomed to.

Pulling off a deal for either would be a major coup, but given the recent history of big signings at Old Trafford, it would be another suggestion that nothing new has been learned by Sir Jim Ratcliffe and co.

Chelsea wasted £63m on Lampard signing who earned more than Palmer does

With Enzo Maresca at the wheel and Chelsea’s recent acquisitions all coming together to form something coherent, Blues fans have trust in their club once again.

Holding fifth place in the Premier League, Chelsea are blessed with some of the finest attacking talent on the continent, with a wealth of quality in the centre of the park and some of English football’s finest defenders too.

Of course, the cream of Chelsea’s crop operates between the forward and central lines. Cole Palmer hasn’t been so much a revelation as a saviour, signed for an initial £40m fee just over one year ago and guiding Stamford Bridge back into the limelight.

Cole Palmer's incredible rise

Chelsea welcomed one of England’s most exciting young talents in Palmer last term, but many across the country actually felt that the west London club had overpaid for a player untested as a regular in the Premier League.

How he has silenced the detractors. How he has speedily claimed a prominent seat in the upper echelon of Europe’s top talents. Last season, Chelsea might have only finished sixth in the league, awarded with a place in the 2024/25 Conference League after Manchester United won the FA Cup (swiping their Europa League spot).

Had Palmer been plying his art elsewhere, Chelsea may well have failed to escape from the sliding morass that they had fallen into the previous year, with his 25 goals and 15 assists in all competitions for the Londoners proving invaluable.

As per FBref, the Three Lions superstar, still only 22, ranks among the top 1% of attacking midfielders and wingers across Europe’s top five leagues over the past year for goals, the top 2% for assists, the top 10% for shot-creating actions, the top 20% for passes attempted and the top 9% for progressive passes per 90.

He’s the real deal alright, with Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher even pronouncing Palmer as “the best player in the Premier League” at the start of the month.

Chelsea star Cole Palmer

Having performed with such incredible efficiency, Palmer has already been duly rewarded with a contract extension, penning a new £130k-per-week deal that will keep him at Stamford Bridge until 2033.

Believe it or not, even with this lucrative new salary, Palmer is still not earning anywhere near as much as some of the Chelsea flops that have littered the club’s recent chequered period. Indeed, Timo Werner is one who is looked back on with not that much fondness.

Why Chelsea signed Timo Werner

In June 2020, Chelsea completed the signing of RB Leipzig forward Werner after meeting his £45m buyout clause under the management of Frank Lampard. It was seen as a significant coup for a forward who had also been coveted by Liverpool and Bayern Munich.

RB Leipzig striker Timo Werner celebrates scoring a goal.

The pointers were promising. Werner had garnered a reputation as one of the most menacing strikers in Germany and had completed a fantastic 2019/20 campaign, posting 34 goals and 13 assists across 45 matches in all competitions.

This was a statement season but simply another year of clinical football from one of the country’s biggest talents. With electric pace and dynamic attacking movements, he appeared tailor-made for Premier League football.

Unfortunately, even a triumphant Champions League campaign in the Germany international’s first year in England was unable to see him live up to the price tag, with high-priced wages and an uninspiring goal return combining to brand Werner as a flop.

Timo Werner's total cost at Chelsea

Werner has plied his trade for Tottenham Hotspur since the start of last season, having failed to recapture the same heights back on home soil with Leipzig after falling by the wayside with Chelsea.

The Blues were unable to get the best out of the 28-year-old’s qualities, sure, but his own wastefulness in front of goal proved to be the crux of his demise under Lampard and Thomas Tuchel, scoring just ten times in the Premier League for Chelsea across two campaigns, crucially missing 24 big chances in this same time period.

Take Palmer. The current Chelsea phenomenon has scored 29 top-flight goals for the Blues but has only missed 12 big chances. Some difference.

Former Chelsea star Timo Werner

And when taking into account the fact that Werner earned more than £9m per year at Chelsea, which translates to around £173k-per-week, it’s clear that Chelsea have triumphed in whittling down their wage bill, even if it’s somewhat unjust that Palmer’s fresh terms still keep him below that of Werner’s salary at the club.

Indeed, when combining that salary expenditure with the fee forked out to bring him in from Leipzig, you can see that Chelsea were bled some £63m by their German blunder.

Of course, there’s no escaping from the fact that Werner played a fundamental part in winning the Champions League, a feat that, in a way, has immortalised his name in Stamford Bridge’s rich history.

Even so, it’s hard to justify that Werner’s total cost of around £63m across just two years justified the deal, even if he bagged against Real Madrid in the semi-finals. Pundit Rio Ferdinand perhaps encapsulated it neatly, calling Werner a player who is “frustrating” to watch.

He wouldn’t get a sniff in Chelsea’s crackling frontline of the present, even with a player of Palmer’s distinction pulling the strings behind him.

Wasim Khan steps down as PCB CEO four months before contract ends

PCB chairman Ramiz Raja has called in the board of directors for a meeting on Wednesday afternoon to take up the matter

Wasim Khan, the PCB CEO, has resigned from his position four months before the end of his contract, the third big exit since the arrival of Ramiz Raja as the new chairman of the board. Wasim follows the departures earlier this month of head coach Misbah-ul-Haq and bowling coach Waqar Younis, both of whom left after Ramiz’s formal appointment.”When I arrived in 2019, there was a real need to build relationships and restore and enhance the global image and reputation of the PCB and Pakistan cricket,” Wasim said in a statement. “With decisive and strategic decision-making, particularly during the Covid-19 pandemic, we succeeded in earning the goodwill and respect of the global cricketing family, which I am hopeful will lead to increased international cricket being hosted in Pakistan in future.”With a five-year strategy in place, new domestic structure in its third season and the investment in women’s cricket in an upward direction, I feel it is the right time to move on and reunite with my young family. They have sacrificed a lot so that I could fulfill my dreams of contributing to Pakistan cricket, which will always remain very close to my heart.”Related

Ramiz vows to 'reset Pakistan cricket's compass'

Misbah and Waqar resign from Pakistan coaching roles

Wasim’s departure continues a period of uncertainty for Pakistan, with the new chairman starting to settle down, and the pullouts of New Zealand and England. That has affected Pakistan’s on-field preparations for the T20 World Cup; without the New Zealand and England T20Is, Pakistan will have played one out of the 12 games they had scheduled in the run-up to the event.Wasim had four months left on his current contract, though he had been verbally offered another three-year term by Ramiz’s predecessor, Ehsan Mani. He was, however, thought to be undecided about whether he wanted to take that up, primarily because he was unsure how secure his role would be should Mani move on. Ramiz’s arrival has brought with it considerable change already, not least in his more hands-on steering of the board than Mani’s.Ramiz has been the more prominent face of the PCB’s response to the fallout from the tour cancellations and has held multiple meetings with players of the men’s national team, as well as PSL franchises. Wasim is also believed to not have had any input in the appointments of Matthew Hayden and Vernon Philander on to Pakistan’s coaching staff – all situations and decisions in which a board CEO would ordinarily play a role. All this would’ve been a drastic change to the role Wasim had been in over since early 2019. Though the revamp of Pakistan’s domestic cricket was forced upon the board by the Prime Minister Imran Khan, Wasim was tasked with its implementation. He oversaw a difficult dismantling of the previous mix of departmental and regional cricket by implementing the provincial-team model – difficult because, in the shrinking of the player pool, a large number of first-class cricketers were overnight in danger of being bundled out of their careers and livelihood. After the New Zealand and England pullouts, Pakistan will have played one out of the 12 T20Is they had scheduled in the run-up to the World Cup•Getty Images

But, by revamping the PCB’s domestic cricket department and combining it with National Cricket Academies and turning it into a high-performance centre, more roles were created for some of the more established and senior first-class cricketers. Positions were also found for other players in the second XI sides of provincial teams as well as in newly-built city associations.Wasim was also a key figure in improving Pakistan’s status as a venue that is safe and welcoming for touring teams. But for the Covid-19 pandemic, Pakistan would have staged two entire PSLs in the country and under his tenure, there was also the return of Test cricket to the country. It could be argued that the groundwork for these developments was laid by the board administration before Wasim’s arrival, but the key move under him was that the PCB was not luring teams to visit by paying them extra money.Wasim’s personal relationship with key figures, especially in England, was instrumental in convincing teams to tour Pakistan. But, with New Zealand and England both pulling out – and with Wasim so closely associated in ensuring that Pakistan visited England in their time of need and in convincing players to undergo especially tough isolation in New Zealand – the fallout is bound to have reflected poorly on the progress he had made.Though his role was often curtailed by events and factors beyond his control, Wasim was the first CEO to be operating under a new board constitution in which the role actually had some influence. Previously, board chairmen have been all-powerful but under this constitution, the CEO held more say in the day-to-day management of board affairs. The chairman, as is becoming clear with Ramiz, still holds considerable power, but more at policy level. The chairman, according to the constitution, holds no final say in the selection of national teams for any series or event or has the power of naming a captain and vice-captain, with the CEO overseeing that responsibility and the chairman only allowed the final say, for which the chairman will be briefed by the CEO.But PCB will not name a replacement – permanent or interim – for Wasim at the moment. His departure is not expected to impact any operational matters and all signs point towards Ramiz, as chairman, taking on more of the role.

Left-arm spin test awaits England's top order in powerplay

Buttler says England could even shuffle the batting order by promoting Dawid Malan or Moeen Ali

Matt Roller26-Oct-20211:48

Harmison: ‘England should try and bat Moeen higher up’

You’re an international captain walking out to the field hoping to limit the damage against two of the world’s most destructive T20 openers: Jason Roy is on strike, with Jos Buttler at the bowler’s end. Who do you throw the ball to?Increasingly, captains are settling on the same answer: a left-arm spinner. Roy and Buttler have opened together in 12 T20Is in the last 18 months and teams have opened the bowling with slow left-arm spin in seven of those innings, looking to turn the ball away from the outside edge and denying them pace on the ball in the powerplay. That run was extended in England’s opening T20 World Cup fixture against West Indies on Saturday night, with Akeal Hosein taking the new ball and bowling four overs off the reel. On Wednesday they play Bangladesh, who fielded two left-arm spinners in Nasum Ahmed and Shakib Al Hasan in their first Super 12s game against Sri Lanka; given Nasum’s first-over wicket in that game – and Bangladesh’s obsessive focus on match-ups – England have been preparing for another early test.Related

Tymal Mills comes full circle in his remarkable England comeback

“We prepare specifically for the opposition and also for the conditions we face,” Buttler said on Tuesday ahead of England’s optional training session at the ICC Academy in Dubai. “I think spin is obviously going to play a huge part in this tournament, and of course Bangladesh have a couple of left-arm spinners, so we’ve been practising against that lots in the nets and trying to get some plans in place.”I think it’s something we’ll see throughout this tournament, spin playing a prevalent part of the powerplay. Of course the challenge is the ball spinning away from the bat – it’s a good match-up in T20 cricket. Obviously with the new ball, some can skid on with the angle, and potentially there may be a little bit of spin as well.”Both batters have worked hard on their method against left-arm spin – particularly Roy, who displayed his range by thumping Hosein over extra cover for six on Saturday night – and their strike rates facing it in the first six overs are almost identical. Buttler’s is 136.13 (in all T20s since the last World Cup), a shade below Roy’s 136.32; the difference is that Buttler has averaged 54 against it, compared to Roy’s 26.84.”It’s about trying to be really clinical picking length and looking to be positive with that option,” Buttler explained, while leaving open the idea that another batter – potentially Dawid Malan or Moeen Ali – could shuffle up the order if England struggle against left-arm spin early on. “I think one strength of our team is the flexibility of our order,” he said. “If that became the trend, I guess we could try to counter that with a change of order as well.”Bizarrely, Wednesday’s fixture will be the first time England and Bangladesh will meet in T20Is, after 21 ODIs and 10 Test matches between them. Buttler said that England were fully aware of the “spin-heavy” side that they were coming up against but that their main focus was on themselves.”We know the challenges they’ll pose,” he said. “We’ve played against them lots in 50-over cricket and they’re a dangerous side. They’ve got a lot of experience in T20 cricket as well, some very good players, playing quite a specific style which is unique to them. We’re focused obviously on trying to plan for the opposition but at the same time we’re focused on ourselves, trying to get our level of intensity to the place it needs to be.”Generally they are a spin-heavy side and have a lot of fingerspinners with great experience such as Shakib Al Hasan who has played a huge number of T20 games all around the world. Generally their batsmen, as a rule, tend to be very strong square of the wicket, and players such as Shakib, Mushfiqur [Rahim] and Mahmudullah, they’ve been around for a long while.”Mustafizur [Rahman] is a threat with his left-arm bowling and excellent slower balls. They’re a team full of match winners. They’re a strong team and in the last few years, especially at home, they have had a lot of success in T20 cricket. Coming to conditions here, it will be quite familiar to the players in terms of what they face at home, so we are expecting a tough challenge.”
