Sunderland player now "completely forgotten" and losing national team place

Sunderland’s terrific start to the season continued on Wednesday night as they beat Luton Town 2-1 at Kenilworth Road to keep themselves top of the Championship. The Hatters took the lead on the night through Elijah Adebayo, but two quickfire second-half goals from Chris Rigg and Romaine Mundle secured all three points for Regis Le Bris’ side.

“I am proud of the team spirit and the spirit of the fans because tonight we needed everyone because it was a big battle,” said Le Bris after the game.

One man the French coach was particularly impressed with was defender Chris Mepham. The 26-year-old, who is on-loan at the Stadium of Light from Premier League side Bournemouth, put in another sturdy display at the heart of the Black Cats’ defense, which didn’t go unnoticed by his boss.

“Chris was ready for this battle, I think,” Le Bris said. “He wasn’t alone, we needed everyone and it’s a question of personality, aggressiveness.”

Jewison Bennette not feeling the love from Le Bris

While things might be going well for Mepham and plenty of other Sunderland stars, it’s not going quite so well for Jewison Bennette. The Costa Rica international, 20, joined Sunderland from Herediano in 2022, but has since struggled to make an impact at the Stadium of Light. This term, he’s played just nine minutes of first-team football, and has otherwise been limited to playing for Sunderland’s U-21s in the Premier League 2.

Amid his lack of game time, media in Bennette’s home country are now claiming his move to Sunderland has resulted in him being “completely forgotten” by his national team.

Costa Rica international Jewison Bennette.

Bennette, who was in Costa Rica’s squad for the 2022 World Cup, hasn’t featured for the Tricolor since November of last year, when he played against Panama in the quarter-finals of the Concacaf Nations League. Media there claim that the likelihood of Bennette now being called back up is now slim, with the winger having gone from “fleeting growth to stagnating” at the Stadium of Light.

Bennette's Sunderland career so far

Bennette’s Sunderland career got off to a good start, scoring in just his second appearance for the club against Watford. But soon, he found himself further and further from first-team action, and in January 2024 was loaned to Greek Super League side Aris Thessaloniki for the remainder of the season.

ByKelan Sarson Oct 23, 2024

His time in Greece quickly turned into a nightmare, however. After making just two appearances for Aris, he was dropped. According to Bennette himself, he was dropped after complaining about the Greek club breaching his contract.

“When I arrived at Aris I started two games and after that they had to pay my salary, my house and my car. I complained to Sunderland and they were upset about that, so they started to leave me out and left me off the list,” the winger told Teletica in May.

He added of Aris: “I had to take out my savings to pay for my expenses, house and car there, they are irresponsible.”

Former India batter VVS Laxman has accepted the BCCI offer to take charge as director of cricket at the National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru starting mid-December. ESPNcricinfo has learned that Laxman accepted the NCA position over the weekend. He has also informed Sunrisers Hyderabad of his decision to quit as mentor, a role he took on in 2013.While the BCCI is yet to announce details of Laxman’s appointment and tenure, this will be the first time Laxman occupies a position, an influential one, in Indian cricket. In terms of coaching experience, Laxman, 47, was also a batting consultant for six years at Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB), which had roped him for the ‘Vision 2020’ program aimed at tapping and promoting grassroot talent in Bengal. That role was facilitated by former Indian captain Sourav Ganguly, who was CAB’s joint secretary in 2014.Ganguly has been once again at the forefront, this time as BCCI president, in Laxman’s NCA appointment. Laxman became the frontrunner for the NCA lead position which vacated by his former Indian captain and teammate Rahul Dravid, who recently took charge as India men’s team head coach until 2023 World Cup.As a NCA director, Laxman’s primary job will be to create roadmap and pathways for both men’s and women’s teams in both senior and junior age groups. Laxman will also get the freedom to work in coordination with the selectors to pick and manage India A and Under 19 teams including the appointment of the coaching staff.Fortunately for Laxman, he takes charge of a well-established structure set up by Dravid, who put in place education and skill-based programmes not just for the players but also for former players aspiring to be coaches. For support Laxman will have a band of coaches – batting, bowling, fielding – working alongside him, but the BCCI is yet to announce the names despite having conducted interviews recently for various positions.Meanwhile, the BCCI has appointed former Saurashtra captain Sitanshu Kotak as the head-cum-batting coach for India A during their tour of South Africa, which will act as a shadow tour for senior Indian team’s tour in December-January.Former Mumbai and India legspinner Sairaj Bahutule will be the India A bowling coach with Shubadeep Ghosh as fielding coach. India A, who will be lead by Gujarat opener Priyank Panchal, play three four-day Tests in Bloemfontein from November 23.

Friedkin want to seal exciting first Everton deal for "strong" DCL upgrade

After defeat against Southampton sent a timely reminder of just how much progress those at Goodison Park still need to make, The Friedkin Group now reportedly want to replace Dominic Calvert-Lewin by sealing an impressive first deal at Everton.

Everton transfer news

It certainly seems as though Dan Friedkin wants to shake things up at Everton when his team complete their takeover of the club. He’ll at least be relieved that the Toffees turned their early season form around but a 1-0 defeat at the hands of fellow relegation candidates Southampton should have brought any dreamers crashing back down to the reality that Everton still find themselves in.

Friedkin, of course, will want to make sure that those dreamers can fantasise about more than just survival and look set to turn their attention straight to the transfer window as a result, amid links to players such as Stanis Idumbo as of late. The Sevilla gem has reportedly been watched by Everton scouts, who have been hugely impressed.

Before signing a player for the future, however, the Toffees could welcome the ultimate replacement for Calvert-Lewin. According to GiveMeSport, Friedkin Group now want to sign Jonathan David in a surprise move ahead of the likes of Newcastle United and Chelsea to replace their own soon to be out of contract star in the summer.

Like Calvert-Lewin, David is set to become a free agent at the end of his current Lille contract next year, representing a bargain deal for whoever is lucky enough to land his signature.

If it is to be Everton, then it would be quite the statement. Alas, at this moment in time, David is reportedly keen to join a club competing on the European stage which instantly leaves those at Goodison Park needing to pull a surprise to welcome the star striker.

"Strong" David would transform Everton

In the form of his career with 13 goals in his last 18 games in all competitions, including against both Real Madrid and Juventus, David would be the signing of the summer if Everton were to lure him to Merseyside. The Canada star has the quality to play for a top-six side, so it would of course have to be some offer from the Toffees, but there’s no doubt that he’d transform them back into a top-half side.

The Lille forward has earned plenty of praise over the years, including from Arsenal and Premier League legend Thierry Henry, who said via HITC in 2022: “When you have a player like Jonathan David, who runs the way he does, in behind.

“His directness. Don’t ask him to come to play or assist because he has none this season. If he sees the centre-back dropping, then he will go in behind. But as soon as he sees there is a gap, he will run and he is also pretty strong too and he loves contacts.”

Broad will not take 'spur-of-the-moment calls' on his Test future

“There is a long time between now and the tour of the Caribbean in March and I have never been one to make emotional decisions.”

Stuart Broad has said he will not take “any spur-of-the-moment calls” on his future as an England player after a “very disappointing” tour to Australia which has seen him selected in only one of the first three Tests.Broad was the world’s leading wicket-taker in Tests in 2020 but took 12 wickets at 39.50 in 2021. He played in only seven out of England’s 15 Tests last year due to a combination of rest and rotation, a calf injury and selection decisions, and was left out for the first and third Ashes Tests on seamer-friendly pitches.Related

David Warner, whom Broad dismissed seven times in the 2019 Ashes series, said after the MCG Test that it was “a great result that he’s not playing” and the decision to leave Broad out of the first Test at the Gabba came in for criticism from Alastair Cook, who said selecting him should have been a “no-brainer”.Broad turns 36 in June and has already lined up a second career as a broadcaster and commentator with Sky Sports, and with Ollie Robinson – a similar style of bowler – impressing since his debut earlier this year, his future in the Test team has been called into question.”As a wobble-seam bowler, I feel as though I missed out on two of the best wobble-seam pitches in Australia,” Broad wrote in his column. “Only playing once has made this a very disappointing trip, one that has not met my personal expectations.”The biggest frustration is losing the Ashes, being 3-0 down and feeling like I’ve not really done anything. Not being able, as an experienced player, to influence a series while it’s live is tough.”Has it affected my hunger to play Test cricket? No. Looking at things pragmatically, I would argue that I won’t get a better chance to take wickets than at Brisbane and Melbourne. But I must be ready for my next opportunity, whether that be in Sydney, Hobart or beyond.”There is a long time between now and the tour of the Caribbean in March and I have never been one to make emotional decisions. So I’m not going to make any spur-of-the-moment calls on my future. I feel fit, I’ve come back from the calf injury feeling strong and I’m taking wickets in the nets. That’s all I can do given the lack of tour games and the tight schedule.”Broad also admitted that “the energy and the mood in the camp is low” heading into the final two Tests after Australia retained the urn within 12 days’ play, and said that England were approaching “the end of our mental tether with Covid”.”There are no excuses for England’s performances on this Ashes tour, he wrote, “but there are reasons why things have turned out as they have.”Unfortunately our displays have reflected our preparation. Imagine Tiger Woods rocking up at the Masters having not played for four months, spending time in a biosecure bubble and then seeing his entire practice rained off. He hasn’t played a single round of golf, yet he’s still expecting to win. Would you bet on him in those circumstances? No, you wouldn’t.”The reality is we turned up undercooked while Marcus Harris, Marnus Labuschagne, Travis Head, Cameron Green, Alex Carey, Nathan Lyon, Scott Boland and Jhye Richardson were playing state cricket. Yes, like us, Australia had players at the T20 World Cup until mid-November. But was it a level playing field? Not really.”This tour has taken its toll on all of us. Without sounding like [I’m] making excuses, we may be at the end of our mental tether with Covid. We are the only team that has played solid international cricket throughout the pandemic and our multi-format guys had already done 50 days in a bubble before they turned up here.”We spent day two of the Boxing Day Test match testing for Covid and having guys moving out of their hotel rooms, away from their families, so they were no longer classed as close contacts. When you are faffing about with external stuff like that, it drags your focus away from where it needs to be.”

Forget Tavernier: Rangers star has just shown he’s Ibrox’s future captain

Glasgow Rangers head into the international break having secured all three points at Ibrox in their Premiership clash against Hearts, but it was far from pretty.

Cyriel Dessers netted for the third game in a row, opening the scoring after just six minutes with a close-range finish. That was as good as it would get for Rangers, as their performance levels dropped as the game went on.

It was yet another turgid and lethargic display which has been common this term under Philippe Clement and the international break has come at the right time for him and his team.

It is evident that several players in blue need a break due to their recent exertions in Europe and domestically. James Tavernier is one name that stands out, as his performances for the Ibrox side this season have been way below the level expected.

James Tavernier's stats for Rangers this season

Last season, the defender registered a staggering 36 goal contributions – 24 goals and 12 assists – in all competitions, becoming the Gers’ leading scorer.

Over the previous few campaigns, Tavernier’s success in the final third has been exceptional.

His numbers from right-back won’t ever be replicated and, while question marks naturally appear given the lack of success the club has achieved since 2016, the Englishman has led the team to a Europa League final in that time.

Adding in the Scottish Cup and League Cup triumphs along with the unforgettable 2020/21 unbeaten league title win, Tavernier played his part.

Has this season been a year too far for the player, however? Especially as it looked like he might have been on the move during the summer.

Indeed, Steven Gerrard was reportedly keen on signing him for Al-Ettifaq in Saudi, which would have seen the former Ibrox boss reunite with Tavernier, but no move materialised.

Giovanni van Bronckhorst – another former Gers manager – also showed keen interest in securing his signature for Besiktas. Again, no concrete bid was made by the Turkish side and the captain began the season fully committed to the Light Blues.

Perhaps Clement should have made a better effort to move him on, as his form has dipped dramatically since last term.

In 19 games for the club in all competitions, Tavernier has scored just once – a penalty against Dundee – while grabbing a further three assists. Hardly the numbers the Light Blues have been used to with the captain.

The defender hasn’t been at his finest defensively either. In the top flight, he has lost possession on average 20 times per game, while being dribbled past 0.5 times per match.

Taking statistics out of the equation, Tavernier’s intensity has been lacking, showing little fight to win the ball back when he loses it. Could it be time for a change of leadership in the near future?

Clement may already have an ideal candidate right in front of him. Someone who has shown a resurgence of late under the Belgian…

Raskin's performance in numbers vs Hearts

Nico Raskin has started the previous five matches for the Gers, partnering Connor Barron in the heart of the midfield to good effect.

Against Hearts, Clement opted to use Raskin and Barron at the base of his midfield, deploying Mohamed Diomande in a more advanced role, which certainly suits his attributes.

During the match, Raskin took 87 touches, completed 85% of his passes, made six tackles and won an impressive eight of 11 ground duels, displaying his tenacity in the centre of the pitch.

He was even given a rating of 8/10 by Glasgow World for his display and with every passing match, Raskin’s confidence is building.

After suffering an injury in pre-season, it looked as though the Belgian would struggle to make inroads into the team, especially as a Barron/Diomande duo was forming in the middle of the pitch.

Rangers midfielder Nicolas Raskin

These recent displays prove just how effective the 23-year-old can be if given a chance in the starting XI.

Could he emerge as a candidate to take over the captaincy when Tavernier does finally depart Ibrox?

Chalkboard

Football FanCast's Chalkboard series presents a tactical discussion from around the global game.

Rangers' future captain

Michael Beale signed the midfielder in the 2023 January transfer window, even reportedly beating off Barcelona to secure his signature.

He then missed only three games for the Gers during the second half of the 2022/23 campaign, which allowed him to settle in well ahead of his first full campaign at the club.

The youngster endeared himself to several of the senior professionals at the club, with Scott Arfield showering him with praise.

Not a bad endorsement for the future captaincy, yet Raskin struggled last term. An injury meant he missed 19 games. Even when he was fit, Clement tended to keep him on the bench as it appeared he wasn’t a big fan of the former Standard Liege starlet.

Former Standard Liege ace Nicolas Raskin.

Another injury suffered before the start of the season threatened to derail his spell in Glasgow before it had even begun, but he has shown incredible resilience to emerge as a vital member of the squad.

In the Premiership, Raskin has won 6.6 total duels per game – a success rate of 66% – while making 3.3 tackles and recovering the ball four times per game, showcasing his ability to win the ball back in the heart of the midfield and his strength in one on one battles.

Rangers may not be at their best, but this midfield triumvirate of Barron/Raskin/Diomande has given Clement a strong core to the starting XI, that’s for sure.

Tavernier won’t be at the Light Blues for much longer. Could Raskin be a viable contender for the captaincy role when it becomes available? Only time will tell.
