Fewer touches than Muric: McKenna must now 5/10 drop Ipswich star

Ipswich Town have now last back-to-back games in the Premier League by a single goal, as Oliver Glasner’s Crystal Palace just about got the better of the Tractor Boys on a cold winter’s night at Portman Road.

The 1-0 win was secured in Palace’s favour courtesy of a sumptuous Jean-Philippe Mateta strike, after the number 14 had somehow wriggled free of various Ipswich markers, before then delicately lifting the ball above Arijanet Muric.

Kieran McKenna was crying out for one of his players to come up trumps in a similar way, but in the end it was a drab defeat for his men to take, with a number of Ipswich shirts underwhelming.

Ipswich's underperformers vs Palace

Not even the likes of Liam Delap could spark into life for the Premier League strugglers in order to attempt to pull off a result, with all three of the former Manchester City striker’s shots unfortunately not finding the back of Dean Henderson’s net.

In truth, it was a poor overall showing from the Suffolk side in the forward areas, with Omari Hutchinson lackadaisical in the number ten role just behind a misfiring Delap, as the ex-Chelsea midfielder squandered possession a hefty total of 19 times.

There were some positives to cling onto defensively at least, with Jacob Greaves standing out as a powerful presence in the heart of defence by completing 12 successful duels, but that wouldn’t matter much considering Ipswich lacked end product up the other end.

On top of that, even for all of Greaves’ glowing numbers, Mateta still managed to waltz through and break Ipswich hearts with his solo strike, with the slim defeat sending McKenna’s men all the way down to 19th spot in the league standings.

The frustrated Tractor Boys boss could well need to be more cutthroat with his team selections moving forward to try and get more out of his up-and-down troops, therefore, with Wes Burns in danger of being axed after a poor showing versus the Eagles.

Burns' performance in numbers

Away from Delap regularly fluffing his lines and Hutchinson continually losing possession, Burns really struggled to get going against Glasner’s visitors too, which would act as a detriment to his side attempting to fashion an opening down the right wing.

Only managing one assist to date since making leap up to the Premier League, it could be that the Welshman isn’t cut out for the huge step-up in quality from the EFL, as the lacklustre Ipswich number seven failed to strike any sort of fear into the Palace defence whenever he roamed forward.

Looking at the table above, not a lot went right for Burns at Portman Road, with his 33 touches coming in at less than Muric’s 51, whilst the experienced attacker regularly failed to beat the first man when firing crosses into the box, resulting in just one accurate cross being tallied up from eight attempted.

Also giving up possession a costly 15 times, it wasn’t a great shock to see East Anglian Daily Times journalist Alex Jones dish out a 5/10 rating to the 30-year-old post-match, as he could now find his right wing spot is taken up by a new face for Ipswich’s next league encounter versus AFC Bournemouth.

Beloved in Suffolk for his heroics last season on the way to promotion being reached, with Burns helping himself to an impressive ten goal contributions in the Championship, it’s clear that the Premier League might just be a bridge too far for the out-of-sorts forward to handle.

Therefore, a fresher option could be thrown into the XI by McKenna next, who will want a reaction from his camp when the Cherries travel to Portman Road shortly.

Gabriel Barbosa, Firmino, Matheus Cunha – afirmou o treinador.

Spurs star who won 100% duels proved he could be the new Eric Dier

It’s safe to say that Tottenham’s season has been a turbulent mess, more specifically in the last few months.

Ange Postecoglou has been facing more questions as Spurs boss and it looked as though fans had run out of patience following the 1-0 defeat at Bournemouth earlier in the month.

Since then they blew a lead against Chelsea and could only draw 1-1 with Rangers in the Europa League.

So, a 5-0 win over Southampton that saw them 4-0 up within 25 minutes was just what the doctor ordered. It was about as comprehensive as you’re going to get in a Premier League game and has relieved the pressure significantly on the squad.

Yes, the Saints have been shocking for the most part this term but it’s not as though Spurs haven’t already dropped points against the likes of Crystal Palace and Ipswich already.

So, who starred on the away team at St Mary’s on Sunday?

Tottenham's best performers against Southampton

There were some bold selection calls from Postecoglou heading into this game and there needed to be following the draw against Rangers.

Timo Werner was unsurprisingly on the bench a few days on from the manager’s public outburst, slamming the forward in his post-match press conference at Ibrox.

The biggest surprise, however, saw Pedro Porro have to settle for a place among the substitutes, although he was forced to come on for the injured Destiny Udogie early in the first period.

While the Spurs defence kept a rare clean sheet, it was the forward players and midfielders who captured the eye the most.

The two key men were Heung-min Son and James Maddison. The latter opened the scoring and found the net once more while Son was more of the creator, setting up two goals but also finding the net himself on the south coast.

The other goal scorers were midfielder Dejan Kulusevski who maintained his fine run of form this term and Senegalese star Pape Sarr who made it four with only a quarter of the game done.

The attack will get their flowers but we want to send some praise in the direction of an 18-year-old; Archie Gray.

Archie Gray's performance in numbers vs Southampton

It’s safe to say that when Gray arrived from Leeds United in a £30m deal back in the summer he was not expected to play as a centre-back in a four-man defence.

The teenager had played most of last term at Elland Road as a right-back but he is a central midfielder by trade and has begun his Spurs career by featuring in both roles after moving to north London.

However, Tottenham’s defensive injury crisis has meant the youngster has been forced to play as a centre-half now on three occasions.

Now, doing so against a Southampton side who are so turgid in the final third was never going to be the most arduous of nights for young Gray but he performed admirably all the same, earning an 8/10 match rating from Football.London’s Alasdair Gold who was keen to note his ‘important late goal-saving tackle’.

It was certainly a competent display from the English talent who was so composed and so confident on the ball, showcasing those midfield qualities that have earned him rave reviews over the last few years.

In total, Gray had 101 touches of the ball, the most of any player on the field. Meanwhile, his 90 accurate passes were the highest number on the pitch as well, 12 more than the next best in Radu Dragusin.

Perhaps more impressive was his ability to win duels, coming away from the contest with a win rate of 100% from two battles.

Based on this performance and the composed nature of previous displays in a Spurs shirt, he is set to make a real name for himself as a Lilywhite in the forthcoming years.

Judging by his ability to play in a multitude of positions, the club may well have unearthed their next Eric Dier too.

Like Gray, the England international arrived at White Hart Lane as somebody who could play in midfield and full-back but swiftly transitioned into an out and out central defender.

bryan-gil-eric-dier-tottenham-opinion

Although some may bemoan some error-stricken performances at Tottenham, Dier was ultimately a fine servant, featuring on 365 occasions and never receiving a red card.

In Gray, they have a player of equally fine versatility and perhaps even someone with a higher ceiling than they ever had in the current Bayern Munich star.

Last night was very much all about the attack but let’s not forget those behind them.

Pakistan build steadily on Naseem Shah's reverse swing masterclass

Alex Carey and Cameron Green added 135 before Australia lost five wickets in a session

Abdullah Shafique and Azhar Ali chipped away at Australia’s first innings of 391 after quick Naseem Shah had earlier staged a spectacular fightback for Pakistan to leave the deciding third Test in the balance.Pakistan reached stumps on day two at 90 for 1 with in-form Shafique 45 not out and Azhar unbeaten on 30 as the hosts trail by 301 runs. Naseem’s brilliant 4 for 58 from 31 overs marked by reverse swing mastery helped restrict Australia and move this match forward with the series deadlocked after two draws in batting friendly conditions in Rawalpindi and Karachi.Naseem’s expertise with the old ball dashed Australia’s hopes of a massive first innings total on a slow surface in the first Test played in Lahore since 2009. Australia, however, still managed a decent score on a pitch offering some welcome assistance for weary bowlers, with cracks evident, but Pakistan started their first innings reasonably comfortably during a prolonged final session lasting 39 overs.Related

After Naseem’s exploits provided a spark, Pakistan’s response started slowly and a stalemate ensued as Australia waited for signs of reverse swing. Their wish was granted in the 11th over bowled by Cameron Green prompting skipper Pat Cummins to bring himself back on and he struck immediately after removing Imam-ul-Haq lbw for 11. After twin centuries in Rawalpindi, left-hand opener Imam has thudded back to earth with three straight failures.Cummins could have had a second wicket after in-form Shafique edged between wicketkeeper Alex Carey and Steven Smith at first slip, who were both stationary. It was a frustrating missed opportunity for Australia and continued the struggles behind the stumps for Carey and Smith this series. Finally batting on his home ground in his 94th Test, Azhar started with a gorgeous drive to the boundary and then counterattacked spinner Nathan Lyon with a six over long-on. With stumps approaching, he shut up shop and defied a tantalising late burst from Cummins. After his tough debut, where he finished with the figures of 2 for 188 from 62.4 overs, legspinner Mitchell Swepson came on in the 22nd over and almost had Azhar stumped then produced deliveries that skidded low but turn was minimal. After Naseem’s reverse swing prowess, there was expectation that Mitchell Starc could replicate something similar but he struggled to find the type of rhythm that crashed through Pakistan’s first innings in the second Test.Cameron Green was cleaned up by some excellent bowling from Naseem Shah•AFP/Getty Images

After winning a crucial toss, Australia’s first innings comprising 133.1 overs was a rollercoaster and dominated by two century partnerships. Usman Khawaja and Smith rescued them from 8 for 2 with a 138-partnership before Green and Carey produced a record 135-run partnership in the highest sixth-wicket stand for Australia in Pakistan.Having started the second day in a delicate position at 232 for 5, Carey and Green batted fluently through the first session to frustrate Pakistan and restore Australia’s control. But they both missed out on maiden Test centuries after falling early in the second session leaving Khawaja as Australia’s only centurion of the three-match series.Australia had appeared set for a commanding first innings total until they lost five wickets in the middle session, as they crumbled under a superb spell of reverse swing from Naseem who was rewarded for unwavering bowling through the innings. In a riveting contest between two of cricket’s brightest young talents, Naseem had the last laugh when he clean bowled Green with a gem of an inswinger to end the allrounder’s 163-ball knock. Green fell just short of his highest Test score of 84 but it was another impressive innings from the 22-year-old who showcased a mixture of strong defence, marked by an intent on getting his huge frame forward, and exquisite strokes on the off side.Carey, in his eighth Test, also produced an encouraging performance to help strengthen Australia’s middle-order after notching his second straight half-century. Having entered the series under some pressure after an inconsistent Ashes with bat and gloves, Carey’s 105-ball knock was marked by superb driving to thwart the quicks and perfectly executing reverse sweeps to fluster the spinners.Pakistan’s five-pronged attack toiled manfully amid oppressive conditions after appearing to be staring down the barrel of again conceding a massive first innings score. But they hung in and took full advantage of reverse swing after lunch through young guns Naseem and Shaheen Shah Afridi, who also claimed four wickets.Naseem’s scintillating burst late in the middle session was a rare sight of ball dominating bat in this series. In a more familiar sight, an arm wrestle ensued in the final session as little separated these teams after two days.

Amorim must axe 4/10 Man Utd star who looks a "shadow of his old self"

Manchester United crashed out of the Carabao Cup on Thursday night at the hands of Tottenham Hotspur. Some costly goalkeeping blunders from Altay Bayindir and poor defending meant the Red Devils ran out 4-3 losers in North London.

Spurs were 1-0 up at half-time with the first of two errors from the Turkish goalkeeper. He parried Pedro Porro’s shot from range right into the path of Dominic Solanke who converted via the post to give them the lead.

Shortly after the half-time break, the Lilywhites added their second, with Dejan Kulusevski converting after a poor United clearance. Solanke scored the third moments later after he bullied his way through the Red Devils defence and fired home from range.

However, Bayindir was not the only goalkeeper who had a poor night, with Fraser Forster in the Spurs’ goal giving United a way back into the game. He gifted Bruno Fernandes the ball in the penalty box, who simply squared it to Joshua Zirkzee, and was hunted down by Amad for the second strike, who closed down his clearance.

Spurs won the game after Son Heung-min scored directly from a corner, with Bayindir failing to punch the cross away, although he arguably was impeded by Lucas Bergvall. Looking at the post-match statistics show United perhaps deserve credit for their performance.

Statistics from Spurs vs. Man United

The fact that Spurs ran out winners and Ruben Amorim’s side conceded four goals is perhaps not a fair reflection of how the game actually panned out. The stats on Sofascore show that the Red Devils were actually the dominant force at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

In terms of the possession numbers, the visitors slightly dominated the ball, with 54% to Spurs’ 46%. They were especially dominant in the second period, having 60% possession which is perhaps unsurprising given they were chasing the game.

United peppered the Spurs goal, taking 20 shots but finding the target just five times. In contrast, the home side had nine shots but got six on target, and were pretty clinical too, scoring four times. Amorim’s side perhaps should have capitalised more, creating four big chances and missing three of them.

It’s also interesting to read into the expected goals stats from the game, which again, can paint a better picture of the game. As per the xG Philosophy on X, Ange Postecoglou’s team had just 0.78xG, with United creating far more, 2.58xG to be exact.

The Red Devils will surely be disappointed that they could not capitalise on such dominance, with defensive errors costing them. Lisandro Martinez was one player who struggled.

Martinez’s stats vs. Spurs

It was a tough night at the office for Martinez. He was the culprit for the tame clearance which led to Kulusevski’s goal, and was at fault for Solanke’s second, too.

Firstly, he didn’t step up which played the Spurs striker onside and couldn’t get near him to even make a challenge, merely getting swatted out of the way by the England international.

It was not a night in which the 2022 World Cup winner covered himself in glory. Football writer Henry Winter explained that he looked like “a shadow of his old self”; the Martinez of old would not necessarily have made those errors.

Chalkboard

Football FanCast's Chalkboard series presents a tactical discussion from around the global game.

He received a scathing rating of 4/10 from the Manchester Evening News journalist Samuel Luckhurst, which was reflected in his stats from the game.

The defender had 71 touches, completing 87% of his passes and even that is a drop from his usual standards, having averaged 91% pass accuracy in the Premier League this season. He won just 50% of his tackles and won just four from seven duels.

Next up for the Red Devils is a visit from high-flying Bournemouth. Amorim might well decide to rotate him out of the side. Given the fact he struggled against former Cherries man Solanke, Martinez could also struggle against his replacement, Evanilson, and the likes of Antoine Semenyo.

The Portuguese boss is not short of options if he chooses to make a change. Jonny Evans played just over half of the game against Spurs, and Harry Maguire was rested. Young prodigy Leny Yoro performed well once again, and Amorim will be hoping to have Matthijs de Ligt back from illness.

It remains to be seen if Martinez can keep his place against Bournemouth. However, after a performance which arguably cost United a place in the Carabao Cup semi-final, it might well be that Amroim rotates things against the Cherries.
