Foakes had returned to the team hotel midway through the afternoon session and will be assessed overnight ahead of the fourth day

Ben Foakes missed the third day of England’s third Test against New Zealand at Headingley with a stiff back.Foakes was seen warming up before the start of play on Saturday but did not take the field when England were bowled out shortly before lunch, with Jonny Bairstow taking the wicketkeeping gloves instead. The ECB said that Foakes had returned to the team hotel midway through the afternoon session and that he would be assessed overnight ahead of the fourth day.Foakes has made a bright start to the season in his first home series. He scored 107 runs for twice out in the first two Tests and has impressed with his glovework, though dropped two catches and was dismissed without scoring in the third.Foakes has a concerning recent injury history and England will hope that this one is not serious, not least with the Headingley Test due to finish on Monday and the rescheduled fifth Test against India starting on Friday. In the event that Foakes is ruled out, Yorkshire’s Harry Brook would be the most likely player to come into the side to make his Test debut, with Bairstow taking the gloves.
Liverpool manager Arne Slot has now identified a £50m star as a prime target, and they are well-positioned to win the race for his signature, according to a report.
Reds keen on a left-back
It would be fair to say that Andy Robertson has not been at his best this season, and Jamie Carragher believes the Scotland international needs to be replaced in the January transfer window.
At the beginning of the month, Carragher said: “I just think Andy Robertson, who is an absolute legend, is just hanging on in every game.
“I don’t think Kostas Tsimikas is quite of the standard to come in and replace him. I think if Liverpool could get a left-back in January, I think that’d put Liverpool in a really strong position to win the league.”
Liverpool now leading race for "unpredictable" £10m forward who Slot loves
The Reds are in close contact with the 22-year-old’s entourage.

A number of left-backs have been linked with moves to Anfield, including Alphonso Davies, but with the Canadian set to sign a new contract to remain at Bayern Munich, Slot is turning his attentions to an option from closer to home.
According to a report from GiveMeSport, the Liverpool boss has now identified Bournemouth’s Milos Kerkez as his prime target after links emerged last week, with the Cherries believed to be looking for a fee of £50m to sanction the left-back’s departure.
AFC Bournemouth's James Hill and AFC Bournemouth's MilosKerkezcelebrate after the match
Manchester United are also interested in signing Kerkez, but his preference is to move to Anfield, although any deal will have to wait until the end of the campaign, as Bournemouth unwilling to let him leave mid-season.
Waiting until the summer transfer window suits Slot, as the Reds manager does not feel additions to his squad are necessary before the transfer window closes on February 3rd, according to this report.
Kerkez could be the perfect Robertson heir
Robertson has been a fantastic servant to Liverpool, but with his performances this season not up to his usual standard, it’s a good decision to start looking at potential replacements for the summer.
The 30-year-old has always combined solid defensive work with attacking contributions, chalking up 10 assists in the Premier League in the 2021-22 campaign, and there are signs that Kerkez could be similarly effective going forward.
The Hungarian has two goals and three assists to his name for Bournemouth in the Premier League this season, while he also showcased his defensive aptitude in the 2023-24 campaign, averaging 9.85 defensive actions per 90, the highest of any U23 Premier League left-back.
Kerkez’s performances for the Cherries indicate he could be the perfect replacement for Robertson this summer, so it is exciting news that Slot has identified him as a major target and Liverpool are in a good position to get a deal done.

Four dropped catches and sloppy ground-fielding hurt Bangladesh in the first ODI against Zimbabwe; it’s been an issue for long, says their captain

Bangladesh have just lost their first ODI against Zimbabwe in nine years, and a series of lapses in the field, highlighted by four dropped catches, hurt them big time on Friday in Harare. Though Bangladesh scored 303 for 2, Sikandar Raza and Innocent Kaia hit centuries to take Zimbabwe home by five wickets, and the two of them made maximum use of the sloppiness in the field.Tamim Iqbal, Bangladesh’s captain, acknowledged the issue, but pointed out that fielding has been an area of concern all along.”Our total fielding effort hurt us [in the first ODI]. We have given away too many easy runs,” Tamim said. “We could have created a little more pressure through dot balls, instead we conceded easy singles. You can point out a lot of things when we lose. But when we win, I always give the reminder what mistakes we have made. We got away with dropping catches and not fielding well, but today it got back to hurt us.”Related

Raza: I may not be a fighter pilot, but I am a fighter
Substitute fielder Taijul Islam dropped a simple catch in the covers when Raza was on 43. Raza finished on 135 not out off 109 balls. Kaia was dropped twice in one Shoriful Islam over. He was on 68 when Taskin Ahmed dropped him at deep third, and Shoriful spilt a straightforward return catch at the end of the over with Kaia on 74. Kaia scored 110 in 122 balls. Taskin, who had a poor day in the field, dropped another sitter at fine-leg when Luke Jongwe was on 17. That didn’t cost Bangladesh much, as Jongwe was dismissed for 24, but the match was as good as over by then.”I have been saying that we have been dropping a lot of catches so it had to cost us at some point,” Tamim said. “This was probably the day. Previously, we have got away with it. We won despite dropping a couple of catches. On these types of wickets [which are good for batting], when you drop four catches, you are not going to win the game.”We have to take the chances. When there’s help in the wicket [for bowlers], there are always chances coming even when you have dropped a catch. But on such a good wicket, it becomes very difficult. We couldn’t hold on to any of the four chances. It is the biggest difference [between winning and losing].”Tamim defended the team management’s decision to not play a left-arm spinner, and add an extra batter at No 7, Afif Hossain in this case. But left-arm spin has done well for Bangladesh and Zimbabwe over the years.”I won’t call it [not playing a left-arm spinner] a wrong decision,” Tamim said. “The story would have been different had we bowled first. But we have to think about the combination for the next game.”At the same time, though, we have had our opportunities, which we didn’t grab. I am not someone who blames a defeat on other things. We must have made mistakes. We take full responsibility.”Things could also have been different had Bangladesh scored more than the 39 they did in the last five overs despite having wickets in hand. They had the experienced Mushfiqur Rahim and Mahmudullah in the middle for the last four overs, but couldn’t get a move on.”We should have scored 15-20 runs more when you consider the circumstances,” Tamim said. “We were 250 for 1, so in that kind of situation you can push a little harder to get those 15-20 runs. We had to tackle the first 10-15 overs, which I thought we handled very well with a good partnership [between Tamim and Litton Das]. We didn’t finish well.”It will be very unfair to point out one or two individuals. As a group, we should have got those 15-20 runs. Those in the middle really tried hard. They have done it a lot of times, so I am not one to point fingers at my players.”

Batter makes hay with the tail before Kent collapse cements Essex’s dominance

Kent 74 for 4 trail Essex 573 (Khushi 164, Critchley 90, Cook 78, Westley 54, Allison 53) by 499 runsIt has been Feroze Khushi’s misfortune that until now the most national attention his career had attracted was when beer was heedlessly sprayed over him during Essex’s balcony celebrations after winning the Bob Willis Trophy two years ago.Khushi visibly recoiled at what he later dismissed as “just a silly mistake”. He had to withstand scrutiny from within the Muslim cricket community and from some members of his wider family. Not to mention the debate in the media and on social media.Kent at Canterbury in September 2022 is the time when, rightfully, he put all that behind him. He was in princely form during the Royal London Cup, collecting two hundreds, and has now added a maiden Championship hundred – 164 from 228 balls from No.6 in a measured innings that insisted he deserves a regular run in the four-day side. That run should arguably have come already. After dabbing Joe Denly wide of short third man to secure his hundred, Khushi shared a brief hug of congratulation from Ben Allison, whose own maiden half-century at No.9 had provided the support he needed, and then quietly bowled his forehead to the ground in an act of .Should liquid refreshment be required for a celebration, there are advantages of Kent having a supermarket on the edge of the ground these days, as they do a very good line in Cocoa and Coconut Rooibos Infusion.Kushi said: “I’ve had a couple of good celebrations this year. I obviously lay flat thanking God as well, because without Him nothing would happen and without my parents’ hard work this success wouldn’t be possible, so I always keep them in my thoughts. I pride myself on my beliefs as well. It’s very important for me, being a Muslim and a British Pakistani. I’m very thankful and appreciative of my form at the moment. I’m doing quite well and I hope it can continue.”Kent’s loss of four wickets in the last 25 overs of the day have left them under pressure entering the third day, especially as their skipper, Sam Billings, has popped a groin and will take no further part. They will be grateful for forecasts of that rare thing in Kent this summer – rain – on the final day.Three wickets fell to the new ball: the most wasteful, Ollie Robinson, who drove Jamie Porter to cover; the best catch, a one-handed scoop by Adam Rossington as Sam Cook left Daniel Bell-Drummond slightly; the most unexpected, the sight of Ben Compton being bowled behind his legs while jazz sounded from the Cowdrey Suite. Cook’s dismissal of Denly came in marginal light. While Essex’s fortunes fluctuated around him, Khushi’s constant tread remained unimpaired. He was 46 overnight and saw Matt Critchley miss out on his own century ambitions when he contrived to flick a wide leg-side delivery from Bell-Drummond to the wicketkeeper.Brief flurries from Rossington, who pulled Bell-Drummond to deep midwicket, and Shane Snater – whose 11 from eight balls ended with a leading edge to mid-off as he flicked Harry Podmore to leg – added to the pressure, three wickets lost for 17 in 19 balls. Khushi was only on 71 when Allison joined him and it appeared that Essex, at 383 for 7, had an appetite for rapid progress. But it emerged that such thoughts were only in the heads of Rossington and Snater, and normal service then ensued.Kent were led by a stand-in captain, Jack Leaning, and his options were limited by a back strain for Matt Milnes, who managed just 14 overs on the opening day and was prevented from bowling on the resumption. Milnes will have a precautionary scan and, as he is departing for Yorkshire at the end of the season, it is entirely possible that Kent have seen the last of him.It was left to Podmore to sum up the demands on Kent’s weakened attack. “It’s been 17 weeks since I bowled more than ten overs so 32 was a bit of a shock to the system,” he said. “I’m looking forward to going to sleep tonight.”With no specialist spinner, such as Hamidullah Qadri, in the side, Kent’s attack became a vapid affair on a benign surface. When Khushi laced Grant Stewart through extra cover, it was a rare act of aggression. His method remained ingrained, despite a growing sense that his singles were appearing at the start of overs rather than the end so giving him rather too much time off strike. At lunch he was still 14 short of his hundred. An edged boundary against Quinn helped him settle into the afternoon, but there was a further delay, on 97, when Quinn struck Allison on the helmet as he tried to hook. Khushi then timed a full-blooded off-drive against Harry Podmore to mid-off. Meanwhile, Allison was serenely driving boundaries without concern. At that moment, the maiden century appeared to be far from certain, but Leaning turned to Denly’s leg spin with him on 99 and one ball was enough to reward his labours. His maiden hundred achieved, life instantly became easier, the rest of his runs coming at around a run a ball. Kent’s spinners had a slow over-rate to address and runs were calmly collected. That Khushi has big shots, too, was exemplified by a straight six against Denly which landed in the top deck of the Woolley stand and was politely tossed back by a man in a natty Panama hat. A Denly googly ended Allison’s best on 53, before Cook hit around him to good effect.Essex by now were so dominant that the last three wickets had added 190 in 50 overs. Khushi was last out, trying to slog Podmore down the ground – Leaning clinging on despite a collision with Grant Stewart. If his final act had been one of unabashed aggression, it was his cogency that had caught the eye. Anthony McGrath, his coach, once told him that he had the ability to play for England. At least now he should get the chance to play for Essex.

After just over a month of constant rumours, speculation, and deals, transfer deadline day is finally here, but so far, Arsenal’s list of incomings is entirely blank.
Mikel Arteta’s side are still just about in the Premier League title race, flying in the Champions League and could even overturn their 2-0 deficit in the League Cup on Wednesday, but to give themselves the best chance of winning anything this year, they’ll surely need to make an addition to the squad before the window slams shut tonight.
Now, the North Londoners have been trying to strengthen their squad, with concrete links to players such as RB Leipzig’s Benjamin Sesko and Aston Villa’s Ollie Watkins, but to little success.

Fortunately, with just a day remaining, recent reports have strongly linked the club with one of the most exciting up-and-coming attackers in European football, a youngster who’d be the perfect replacement for the ageing Leandro Trossard.
Arsenal chasing in-demand star
According to a recent report from Sky Sports Germany reporter Florian Plettenberg, Arsenal are one of several clubs who remain incredibly keen on Bayern Munich’s Mathys Tel.
Plettenberg has revealed that, as things stand, no club has been able to reach an agreement with the German behemoths regarding the French talent and that while the Gunners are “in talks” with them, there will be “no panic sale.”
One of the major stumbling blocks for the Red Devils appears to have been the fact that Bayern wanted them to sign the 19-year-old on a permanent deal or on loan with an obligation to buy, which could potentially be an issue for the North Londoners as well, especially as the offer they accepted from Tottenham Hotspur last week stood at around £50m.
Mathys Tel
It could be a complicated and potentially costly transfer to get over the line before the end of the day, but given Tel’s immense ability and potential, it is one well worth fighting for, especially as the club need to be thinking about a Trossard replacement.
Why Tel would be a dream Trossard replacement
So, the first thing to clear up is just why Arsenal would want to sign a replacement for Leandro Trossard this month, especially as it was only last season that he racked up a tally of 19 goal involvements in 46 games.
Well, it comes down to two things. The first is that while he was exceptional last year, this season has been a different story altogether, and while still reasonably impressive, a tally of five goals and six assists in 35 games isn’t really enough for a side gunning for the title.
The second reason is that, at 30 years old, the Waterschei-born winger is far closer to the end of his career than the start, and while footballers of today can play longer than they did in the past, research carried out by The Athletic revealed that wingers peak at around 26 and experience an incredibly sharp decline in their ability to take on defenders when they reach 30.
Moreover, with reports coming out last month that little to no progress was being made on a new contract for the former Brighton & Hove Albion ace, it makes sense to start looking for a young and exciting long-term replacement, which in this case would be Tel.
Now, it is true that the Frenchman hasn’t had the best of campaigns this year, but that is almost entirely down to the fact that Vincent Kompany has barely played him, as he’s made just four starts across 14 appearances, totalling 458 minutes.

However, when you look at how effective the Sarcelles-born dynamo was last season, the clamour from other sides to secure his signature becomes far easier to understand.
For example, in just 1406 minutes across 41 appearances, the “mind-blowing” talent, as dubbed by talent scout Jacek Kulig, scored ten goals and provided six assists, meaning he maintained an average of a goal involvement every 87.87 minutes, which is an awe-inspiring rate of return.
Moreover, considering that he produced those numbers despite being just 18 at the start of the campaign, it really does feel like the sky is the limit for the Bayern ace.
Ultimately, with Trossard being on the wrong side of 30 and his rate of return declining this season, it’s time Arsenal signed a proper long-term replacement for him, and based on his sensational form last season, Tel appears to be the perfect candidate.
