Confira no vídeo acima:

Former India spinner says head coach Gautam Gambhir has tough decisions irrespective of Champions Trophy result
ESPNcricinfo staff20-Feb-20255:04
Kumble: Win or lose, Gambhir needs to make some tough calls
Anil Kumble, the former India captain and legspinner, believes the team must start setting transition plans in motion after the ongoing Champions Trophy, and build a new, younger team capable of challenging for the 2027 ODI World Cup.Speaking on ESPNcricinfo’s Matchday show ahead of India’s opening game against Bangladesh, Kumble said that head coach Gautam Gambhir will have some “tough calls” to make, irrespective of how the current team fares in the Champions Trophy.”You could say this is a very important tournament for a coach who has to make those tough calls in terms of transitioning from the legacy players to the others,” Kumble said. “But that’s the job of the coach, to make those hard decisions.”This tournament could determine where those seniors would go, and where India would look at making those changes. Win or lose, you need these tough calls to be made at the earliest. You need to start looking ahead in white-ball cricket, especially at the 2027 World Cup.”While Gambhir has a stellar record in T20Is as head coach, with 16 wins and just two losses, his credentials in ODIs and Tests have been less impressive. India lost a bilateral ODI series to Sri Lanka for the first time in 27 years, while in Tests, they were beaten 3-0 at home by New Zealand before losing the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 3-1 in Australia.Kumble stressed on the need for Gambhir to introduce young blood in the squad and ensure the new group of players have “at least 20-25 matches together” before the next ODI World Cup.”In any World Cup, you’re looking at building a squad that has played at least 20 or 25 matches together. That’s when you understand the nuances of match situations, and who to rely on. Ideally, at the end of this tournament, you must start looking ahead to the next World Cup. Do the seniors make it there? Or do we give the opportunity to youngsters to take the team forward in the shorter formats and build a strong unit? These are questions Gambhir needs to address.”He (Gambhir) has a fresh, young team and plenty of players to choose and build from, so he needs to organically start preparing for the 2027 World Cup. In T20Is, he’s done well. Suryakumar Yadav has been a great captain. The next World Cup is still two years from now, and the new set of players will need a consistent run of games playing with each other, to understand many things like the batting order, match situation, and tactics.”
Maybe the most frustrating part is the familiarity. Manchester United entered the 2025/26 campaign with such optimism in spite of last season’s struggles, having recruited with ambition over the past few months, having pledged to turn the ship around.
Ruben Amorim did not look like a man in control or a manager instilled with belief, after the Red Devils crashed out of the Carabao Cup on Wednesday evening, defeated by League Two’s Grimsby Town on penalties.
A point from the opening two weeks of Premier League action has left plenty to be desired, but the midweek humiliation has unravelled all the tentative work. One step forward, but United have now fallen down the stairs.
If Amorim is the right man to lead this club back toward the glory days, he must enact drastic change with speed. As strange as it sounds, Saturday’s home tie against Burnley in the top flight carries a considerable amount of weight.
The Portuguese manager, without a doubt, needs to raise his win percentage, currently at the lowliest of lows.
Ruben Amorim vs post-Fergie managers
We’ve been here before. This recycling of first-team coaches at the Theatre of Dreams has yet to bring about the fruits of former successes for Manchester United.
Sir Alex Ferguson is one of the greatest managers in the history of the game, and his influence – or lack thereof – over the past 12 years has been despairingly clear for a fallen giant who have yet to return to the pinnacle in the intervening years.
Man Utd’s most embarrassing defeats since Sir Alex Ferguson left Old Trafford
The Red Devils have had multiple humiliating losses since 2013.
ByCharlie Smith Aug 28, 2025
Amorim arrived with an air of excitement, having crafted a high-octane and exciting outfit in Sporting Lisbon, who are now two-in-a-row Liga Portugal champions.
But it hasn’t translated, not one bit. In fact, Amorim’s 36.4% win percentage across all competitions since leaving his homeland for Manchester has seen him plummet below all the other permanent post-Fergie managers, and given the frustrations and disappointment that come attached with some of those names, this is damning indeed.
Such plain-and-simple evidence plays into the fact that things need to change, and quickly.
Man United boast so much potential; summer signings Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo, both Premier League sensations last year, are a testament to that fact.
Maybe what INEOS need is a figure in the dugout who knows the division and can bring out such forward players’ potential.
Man Utd shortlist Premier League manager
According to Caught Offside, Manchester United have shortlisted Bournemouth boss Andoni Iraola as they consider axing Amorim from his role in the dugout.
Manager Focus
Crystal Palace’s Oliver Glasner has also been considered for the role, with discussions even taking place for the FA Cup-winning manager, but Iraola could be a shrewder appointment.
It is understood that INEOS will act incisively if need be, and if Amorim fails to showcase some optimism and signs of a resurgence in the coming days, Sir Jim Ratcliffe may well be rewriting the script once again.
What Andoni Iraola would bring to Man Utd
Iraola’s Bournemouth play adaptable and attractive football, and that’s something that Manchester United need if they are to replace Amorim, whose obstinacy in sticking to his 3-4-2-1 formation has seemingly uprooted any semblance of positivity or synergy within the ranks.
Iraola, conversely, is willing to operate through different styles. Balance, energy and an impressive collective understanding all make for staples of the Spaniard’s managerial skill set, and his ability to eke out the best level from his forwards, in particular Dominic Solanke and Antoine Semenyo, suggests he could be the perfect manager to ensure Mbeumo’s attacking quality is put to good use in Manchester.
Former Premier League defender Nedum Onuoha hailed Iraola for his “incredibly impressive” start to life in the Premier League, and he has sustained Bournemouth’s form across his two seasons at the helm, not just emulating Eddie Howe’s record ninth-place finish in the top flight for the Cherries, but accruing ten more points (56 in total) too.
Semenyo has been crucial in getting the system up and running, having scored two goals and supplied an assist across Bournemouth’s opening two fixtures this season, notching 17 goal involvements across the 2024/25 campaign.
Iraola is the architect of the forward’s success, and he could certainly repeat the trick with the 26-year-old Mbeumo, who is more accurate, more clinical and more rounded in his attacking play.
Bournemouth’s esteemed coach, after all, has been described as “one of the best in the league” by analyst Ben Mattinson.

Semenyo was linked with a £60m move to Tottenham Hotspur before signing a new contract at the Vitality Stadium this summer, with his exploits on the south coast leading analyst Ben Mattinson to hail him as a “workhorse” and a “duel monster”.
However, Mbeumo has demonstrated an even deadlier attacking sense in the Premier League with Brentford, and the comparable right-sided forwards, both with impressive underlying data, also have prolific touches in front of goal, Mbeumo more so.
If anything, United need stability and signs of progress within a structured system that has been proven within the English game.
Sadly, Amorim’s style is anything but that, and change might be required if Old Trafford wishes to return to the glory days.
Bad news for Mainoo: Man Utd preparing late move to sign £43m England star
Manchester United are set to make a move for one talent who could send Kobbie Mainoo packing.
Newcastle United are now firmly out the other side of a whirlwind summer transfer window.
The main obvious talking point towards the end of the hectic window that clouded over every Toon conversation was Alexander Isak’s future, with the superstar Swede eventually moving on to Premier League rivals Liverpool in a staggering £125m deal on deadline day, after a well-known refusal to line up for the Magpies again.
Eddie Howe’s men thankfully bounced back from this expected departure by adding two new strikers to their camp late on, with the hope that both Yoane Wissa and Nick Woltemade can immediately hit the ground running, having cost a pretty penny to bring them both in.
What Wissa & Woltemade can offer Newcastle
Replacing a striker of Isak’s unbelievable quality was always going to be a tricky task.
However, Howe and Co. will pray that throwing both Wissa and Woltemade into the mix will make their former star-man’s absence feel less obvious, with Wissa especially well-versed in what it takes to succeed in the demanding Premier League.
Indeed, the 29-year-old – who cost an excessive £55m to bring in – already has 45 Premier League strikes next to his name when lining up for Brentford, with the Congolese attacker no doubt chomping at the bit to score goals by the bucket load at his new employers, after missing Newcastle’s weekend clash with Wolverhampton Wanderers owing to injury.
New £69m recruit Woltemade might well have to lead from the front, therefore, if Wissa is stricken with injury, with more pressure on the former Stuttgart man’s shoulders, arguably, considering he has never stepped foot onto English soil in his career to date.
He certainly knows where the goal is, though, when assessing his red-hot Bundesliga numbers from last season, with 13 strikes coming his way from just 28 starts.
It will just be whether Woltemade can immediately leap into the Premier League in style, with his bumper price tag upping the pressure levels on his shoulders. He has, of course, lessened that strain immediately when heading home a debut effort against Wolverhampton Wanderers last time out.
The worry will still be that Howe’s side might well have overpaid for both these attackers in their desperation to fill their Isak-shaped hole, with this consistent first-team star at St James’ Park coming in with a heftier valuation, despite all the fanfare surrounding Newcastle’s two new major purchases.
The "monster" worth more than Wissa & Woltemade
Newcastle have spent big all summer long away from the additions of Wissa and Woltemade, with Anthony Elanga costing an inflated £55m to further bolster the Magpies’ new-look attack.
According to Football Transfers, however, Isak’s fellow compatriot is already worth a slightly lesser £51m, with both Wissa and Woltemade also falling victim to reduced values when using the same site.
Staggeringly, the ex-Bees forward’s value has already dropped all the way down to a meagre £22m when weighed up next to Elanga’s value, with that amount more in line with Newcastle’s original valuation of the 29-year-old, which stood at £30m, before Brentford drove a harder bargain.
Moreover, Newcastle could well have splashed more cash than they needed to with Woltemade as well, with the lethal ex-Stuttgart man worth just £32m, a far cry away from his high £69m valuation.
Amazingly, when judging all these new values, Newcastle fan favourite Joelinton even has a bigger transfer worth next to his name, which is arguably a testament to how vital the Brazilian has been to Howe’s cause over the past few seasons, even when many fresh faces have arrived through the door.
When first joining the Magpies ranks, many might have worried that the former Hoffenheim man was going to be known as an extortionate waste of cash, having struggled to initially settle after a whopping £40m was forked out to win his services.
Now, however, the South American “monster” – as he was once labelled by journalist Liam Kennedy – is a guaranteed starter when fit, with his value not wavering too far away from the millions originally spent on his services back in 2019.
Joelinton’s valuation now comes in at a slightly lesser £35m, which isn’t as dramatic a dip as Wissa and Woltemade have immediately experienced, with the 29-year-old keen to add even more goals and assists to his Toon back catalogue to help Howe and Co. surge up the early Premier League standings.

Having missed some games already this season through his own injury difficulties, the St. James’ Park faithful will be keen to see Joelinton back in the starting XI moving forward, knowing his added presence could see Newcastle kick on, as much as both Wissa and Woltemade can also be difference-makers.

Brendan Doggett finished with the best figures in a final but Queensland have a shot at an astonishing turnaround

The Sheffield Shield final could be set for a grandstand finish after centuries from Jack Clayton and Jack Wildermuth gave Queensland hope of producing a record-breaking turnaround after South Australia had appeared on the brink of the title with Brendan Doggett claiming the best ever figures in a decider. When Michael Neser fell to the last ball before lunch on the third day, Queensland led by just 45 with four wickets in hand. But Clayton, who ran himself out first ball on the opening day, and Wildermuth added 103 for the seventh wicket then Wildermuth found support from Mark Steketee in a further 112-run stand for the eighth leaving South Australia needing what would be a record chase in a final of 270.Related

If Queensland are able to secure a remarkable victory having been dismantled for 95 in their first innings, they will have overturned a record final deficit in doing so with the previous being the 104 Victoria trailed by against New South Wales in 1990-91.South Australia will, though, take solace from the fact batting has become easier and, with Nathan McAndrew claiming the final wicket five minutes before stumps, they can start their chase afresh on Saturday morning although reverse swing could become a factor on an abrasive surface.Clayton’s century, the fifth of his first-class career, came with a push into the off side from his 247th delivery in what had been a superbly composed display after his first innings aberration.Jack Clayton made a superb century•Getty Images
He was lbw to Ben Manenti without adding to his total, at which point Queensland were still a precarious 148 ahead. But Wildermuth, who survived some close lbw shouts, continued to defy the home side to bring up his second century in consecutive matches, this one off a brisk 118 balls despite being kept quiet in the 90s, having also scored one against South Australia in the last round where his innings helped Queensland squeeze into the final.Wildermuth’s hundred, reached with a firm clip through midwicket off Liam Scott, was met with a more outgoing celebration than Clayton as he let out a roar of delight. He fell late in the day when McAndrew dug deep, finding some late movement to beat the inside edge with relief as much as joy the emotion for the home side.South Australia’s quicks visibly tired during the day. As the eighth-wicket stand extended, their shoulders started to slump for the first time in the game. Offspinner Manenti bowled just 15 of the 136 in the second innings, while captain Nathan McSweeney did not try any part-time options in an attempt to break the concentration of the Queensland batters but Doggett, with match figures of 11 for 140, and McAndrew were herculean in their efforts as they shared eight wickets.ESPNcricinfo Ltd
Queensland had resumed with a lead of just one run and the game appeared to be slipping away when Doggett struck twice with a brace of lbws to remove Ben McDermott and Jimmy Peirson to complete a 10-wicket match haul.Targeting full and straight with a hint of late reverse swing, Doggett trapped both batters on the crease with deliveries that tailed in to continue his outstanding performance. He went on to become just the second bowler to claim 11 wickets in a Shield final after Tasmania’s Shane Jurgenson 2001-02.Clayton, who gave a very tough chance to Manenti at slip on 43, and Neser responded in a largely defensive mode, adding 29 in 21 overs as they nursed Queensland towards the second new ball while only edging the lead upwards. Then, having done the hard work to reach that moment, Neser edged a big drive against McAndrew against what became the final ball of the morning session.Clayton had only added 25 during the first session but he rarely appeared flustered and his off-side play stood out although he did have a nervous moment when he top-edged a Doggett short ball towards fine leg. At numerous times during the day, South Australia’s quicks went to a short-ball plan on an increasingly docile surface but, largely, the batters had time to adjust.Brendan Doggett continued his outstanding match•Getty Images
It was Wildermuth who signaled a change of tempo as he scored briskly from early in his innings. In a two-over period either side of afternoon drinks he took four boundaries in seven balls off McAndrew and Scott then reached his fifty from just 49 deliveries. When Clayton departed, getting a tap on the shoulder from Alex Carey in acknowledgment of his efforts, Wildermuth needed further support to give Queensland’s bowlers more to work with. Steketee did an ideal job and was also able to keep the scoreboard ticking against an increasingly weary attack.Steketee brought up just the fourth half-century of his 94-match first-class career, but his second of this season, when he took Jordan Buckingham for his seventh boundary followed by a two from his 101st delivery. He fell to a well-judged parried boundary catch at long leg by McAndrew who palmed the ball up as he went over the rope then gathered it back inside the playing area. It gave Doggett his 11th wicket; whether it becomes one of the great title-winning performances is yet to be determined.

Russell Martin retains belief that Rangers will come good in the long run after beginning their Europa League campaign with a 1-0 Ibrox defeat to Genk.
Gers midfielder Mohamed Diomande was shown a straight red card in the 41st minute for his challenge on Zakaria El Ouahdi. In added time in the first half, Gers keeper Jack Butland saved a penalty from former Celtic striker Oh Hyeon-gyu, but the South Korean eventually opened the scoring in the 55th minute and it proved to be the winner.
Martin, who had no complaints about the red card, has won four times in 14 games since he took over in the summer and the remaining fans in the crowd of 37,898 – the lowest in a European game at Ibrox since Rangers came back to the top flight – chanted against him at the final whistle.
When asked what gave him continuing confidence, he said: “Well, the way the players train, the way they stick together in the second half, the feeling inside the training ground, so I can’t control anything else apart from that. We will work, learn from tonight.
“Have a bit of perspective on tonight and how difficult it was after the red card. Because whether you like it or not, it changes a lot when you are down to 10 men for so long in a game in a European tie.“So, learn from it, especially the first half, where we hurt ourselves a little bit and got trapped too much.
Fewer touches than Butland: Rangers man was just as bad as Diomande vs Genk
Rangers began their Europa League campaign with a 1-0 defeat to Genk, but the sent off Mohamed Diomandé as not the only man to blame for this defeat.
ByBen Gray Sep 26, 2025
“And then get ready to prepare and perform and win on Sunday. I’m disappointed we lose. The red card changed the game a lot. I was looking forward to getting to half-time. We had a few key points across to help the performance.
“We started fine, we had a bit of control and then we had a 10-minute spell where Genk got on top because we just didn’t look after the ball anywhere near well enough, forced it a little bit, and then we defended too deep because we didn’t take care of each other with the ball.
“And then I thought we rode that out and it looked like we were getting a bit of control back. Then Dio gets sent off, so it’s frustrating for us, really frustrating. I asked them to be really aggressive and not just defend for 45 minutes to try and get a draw and get a point, so I thought we looked a threat.
“And they had a couple of moments but they didn’t cut us open. It wasn’t like we were defending relentlessly and we had a couple of moments ourselves. So I’m frustrated. The red card changes a lot but I’m proud of the effort in the second half.
Genk boss heaps praise on "special" Rangers fans
Genk boss Thorsten Fink was pleased to leave Ibrox with a 1-0 win and recalled playing at the Govan stadium for Bayern Munich in 1999, when the two sides drew 1-1 in a Champions League group game.
He said: “I was happy to see the crowd today and the fans in the stadium. I was here in 1999. I didn’t play, but I was on the bench. Rangers drew 1-1 with Bayern Munich.
“They played a very good game against us. I have been a coach for a long time, but it was my first time coming here as a coach so it is a nice victory for me.
“There is always a good atmosphere here. They supported their team from what I saw. When I was here with Bayern Munich there were more fans, 52,000 I think.“They are special, special fans. The atmosphere in 1999 I will never forget. Today the fans were good as well. I was happy to be here.”
