Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have signed South African batter Dewald Brevis as replacement for the injured Gurjapneet Singh for the remainder of IPL 2025. Brevis will join CSK for INR 2.2 crore.Brevis, who has played 81 T20s and has 1787 runs with a highest score of 162, played two T20Is for South Africa in 2023. He has prior experience of playing in the IPL having represented Mumbai Indians in 2022 and 2024. Earlier this year, he helped MI Cape Town win their first SA20 title with an 18-ball 38 in the final. He was the sixth-highest run-getter (230 at a strike rate of 184) in that tournament. Brevis’ ability to hit the ball hard and access unusual areas in the field have caught the eye of franchise owners in other parts of the world too. He’s played the CPL and represents the MI franchise in Major League Cricket in the USA.Brevis, who entered the IPL 2025 auction in November at a base price of INR 75 lakh and went unsold, has been in good form in the last few months. He finished as the second-highest run-getter in South Africa’s one-day and first-class tournaments. Although he is early in his career, the 21-year-old was tapped for big things, not least because of an uncanny resemblance to AB de Villiers when he’s at the crease. Brevis was even nicknamed ‘Baby AB’.Gurjapneet, the Tamil Nadu seamer who was bought by CSK at the auction for INR 2.2 crore, did not get a game this season.CSK are currently at the bottom of the points table with just two wins in seven games. It was supposed to be a new era at Rangers in the summer. The 49ers completed their takeover and in came the likes of Andrew Cavenagh, Paraag Marathe and Kevin Thelwell to call the shots. Fresh from another Scottish Premiership campaign to forget, this was supposed to be the Gers reborn, led by Martin in the dugout.
Alas, just months later, it’s back to square one for the new owners, who have learned a harsh lesson. Martin has been dismissed in a decision that has seemed inevitable for some time, and he is now destined to be remembered among Ibrox’s greatest disappointments, whilst the 49ers must now turn to fresh options.
Just what’s next for Rangers is the big question. A number of managers have been mooted for some time, with Martin’s record of one win in seven games only ever leading to one decision, but it remains to be seen who takes the vacant job.
Names such as Danny Rohl have once again emerged, as have Steven Gerrard, Sean Dyche and new candidates such as Mark van Bommel. It’s not a decision that the Gers should rush into after making such a mistake in their last hiring process and the international break should hand them ample time to decide on a candidate.
Rohl would represent a similar risk to Martin, but if the 49ers want to persist with the ideas for their project then he could be their man. Meanwhile, positive talks have already reportedly been held with Gerrard, who has outlined his biggest demand to return to Ibrox.
Gerrard outlines Rangers demand before Ibrox return
As reported by TeamTalk, after holding positive talks to return to the club, Gerrard has demanded more control of transfers and to be handed a January budget to fix the current mess at Ibrox. Whether the 49ers accept those demands after bringing Thelwell into his sporting director role in the summer to handle transfers is the big question.
It would certainly make sense to turn to Gerrard. He’s the only candidate on Rangers’ list that has been there and done it in the Scottish Premiership. In fact, he remains the last manager to dethrone Celtic and Brendan Rodgers in Scotland’s top flight.

Moody: Kishan has made it clear he’ll be retained
Ishan Kishan scored 106 not out off 47 balls in the second match of IPL 2025. In the latest, his 12th innings, he scored 94 not out in 48 balls against Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB). Take out those 200 runs, and you’re left with 125 in ten innings. One of the many reasons Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) weren’t the force they were last season was Kishan’s lack of runs through the best part of the IPL – “that certainly impacted the SRH performance,” as Anil Kumble said.Kishan wasn’t the only one, of course. Travis Head couldn’t replicate his heroics from 2024. Heinrich Klaasen was patchy. Abhishek Sharma held his own. In what has been a disappointing season for SRH with one match to go, their last two games is cause for optimism. Before scoring 231 for 6 in the win over RCB on Friday, they had scored 206 for 4 in 18.2 overs to overhaul Lucknow Super Giants’ total.”The last two matches, our batting performance has been very solid, we’ve achieved large scores, match-winning scores,” Helmot said. “Obviously, our batters assessed the wicket [on Friday] and we felt it was a very nice wicket to bat on and a large score was going to be required. So, we maintained that aggressive approach but it was still important to have a batter in at the very end to ensure that we could capitalise on those last few overs. So, I think as a batting unit, we maintained the course.”I think we’ll always be aggressive and always be positive but we’ll always try to be smart as well and understand that not all surfaces play the same way. And so, a score of 170 or 180 might be a match-winning score [in some places]. If Arsenal are going to achieve what they want to achieve this season, their success is seemingly going to be built on a foundation of 2-0 wins.

Viktor Gyökeres' mixed start to life at Arsenal
Fair to say, after arriving from Sporting Clube de Portugal for around £62m, Viktor Gyökeres did so with sky-high expectations.
Despite Kai Havertz and Gabriel Jesus’ array of qualities, Arsenal have not had a truly reliable goalscorer since the departure of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang in January 2022, and Gyökeres’ tally of 97 goals in 102 games for Sporting speaks for itself.
Last month, at the Ballon d’Or ceremony, the Swedish international was awarded the Gerd Müller Trophy, given to the highest-scoring striker in European football, but he doesn’t quite look like a world beater just yet in red and white.
His statistics below underline his mixed start to life in North London.
As the table documents, in nine appearances, Gyökeres does have three goals to his name, but it could be more.

His expected goals figure is almost four, while he has so far missed seven Opta-defined big chances across the Premier League and Champions League.
The numbers also show that the striker is offering almost nothing from a creation point of view, mustering just 27 touches per 90, of which more than a quarter come in the opposition’s penalty area.
Patience is required; Gyökeres is taking time to adapt to his new teammates, who are likewise still adapting to him.
However, did the Gunners sell their own home-grown Gyökeres for just £4m, a player who has been absolutely on fire since leaving?

Back in 2021, Arsenal poached an 18-year-old by the name of Mika Biereth from Fulham, an event that would’ve passed most Gooners by, considering he never made a single first-team appearance for the club.
However, he was prolific in Premier League 2, scoring 11 times in 21 games, subsequently loaned out to RKC Waalwijk and then Motherwell, certainly catching the eye during his very brief spell at Fir Park, bagging six goals in 14 Premiership outings for the Steelmen.
His loan in North Lanarkshire was abruptly cut short, allowing him to move to Sturm Graz, first on loan and then permanently for £4m, really making his name in Austria.
Biereth scored 23 times in just 47 appearances for die Schwoazn, averaging a goal every 156 minutes, helping them win a domestic double, as well as bagging three goals in four outings in the Conference League, before netting against Girona and Lille in the Champions League too. As the forward self-proclaimed in one interview, “like Haaland, all I really care about is scoring goals”. He’s like Gyokeres in that regard too.
Thus, back in January, Monaco moved quickly to sign the now 22-year-old for a reported fee of €15m (around £13m).
This quickly looked like a very shrewd investment because, in Ligue 1 last season, Biereth scored 13 times in just 16 appearances, including bagging hat-tricks against Auxerre, Nantes and Reims, firing les Monégasques to a third-place finish.
As a result of this form, Football Transfers estimate that the Danish international’s current market value is now around £23m, representing a 464% increase on what Arsenal sold him for.
The Gunners did pocket around £1m via a sell-on clause when the striker swapped Sturm Graz for the Principality, but could have earned so much more had they given Biereth a chance.
Admittedly, he has only scored once so far this season, on target during a 5-2 victory over Metz at Stade Louis II last month, so only time will tell if he was just a one-season wonder, or if this is a brief blip.

Nevertheless, given that Gyökeres is yet to be firing on all cylinders, perhaps Biereth would have been a more effective option to spearhead this Arsenal attack.
