Opinion: Leeds must move for Heaton after Blackman injury

[ad_pod ]

Leeds lost Jamal Blackman to a season-ending injury on Friday, and the Whites must now move for Burnley’s Tom Heaton.

What’s the word?

Leeds have confirmed that Blackman will return to Chelsea after fracturing his tibia during an Under-23’s match, and the Whites now have just one senior goalkeeper.

Considering that lone senior keeper, Bailey Peacock-Farrell, is under loads of fire for his own performances, Marcelo Bielsa must make a new stopper his top priority in January.

Heaton has fallen down the pecking order at Burnley since his injury, and the 32 year-old could be the difference between automatic promotion and the playoffs.

[brid autoplay=”true” video=”332312″ player=”12034″ title=”Watch Fixture in Focus England v Croatia”]

The perfect signing?

Peacock-Farrell was one of the few silver linings of last season, as the disastrous form of Felix Wiedwald led Paul Heckingbottom to give the youngster his chance.

While the Northern Irishman shone under those difficult circumstances, he has regressed this season, possibly the only player to do so under Bielsa.

After a couple of mistakes earlier in the season, most notably against Tom Lawrence’s free kick at Derby, the 22 year-old had the worst performance of his career so far in the 4-1 defeat to West Brom.

Heaton meanwhile has lost his place at Turf Moor simply due to bad luck. The veteran goalkeeper picked up an unfortunate injury at the beginning of last season, and Sean Dyche couldn’t replace Nick Pope after the youngster excelled in Heaton’s absence.

Joe Hart was then brought in this summer after more injuries for both Pope and Heaton, leaving the experienced stopper out in the cold.

Still, he has racked up over 150 league appearances for Burnley and also has three England caps to his name.

Most importantly, Heaton does not make silly mistakes, something which unfortunately cannot be said for Peacock-Farrell.

Heaton was phenomenal in Burnley’s promotion season in 2015-16 and was fast becoming one of the finest goalkeepers in the top tier.

Whether it be on loan or a permanent deal, reviving his career at Elland Road would be a smart move for all parties, and could just push the Whites back into the big time.

So, Leeds fans, would you back a move for Heaton? Or do you trust Peacock-Farrell? Let us know your thought by voting in the poll below…

West Ham and Declan Rice no closer to agreeing new deal

[ad_pod ]

According to club insider ExWHUemployee, Declan Rice is no closer to signing a new contract at West Ham United.

What’s the story?

Rice’s current deal at the London Stadium will expire at the end of next season, and the 19-year-old has been locked in talks with West Ham over the last few months.

A wide range of figures have been mentioned, but the bottom line is that West Ham are not currently prepared to meet Rice’s wage demands.

The Republic of Ireland international is still on his £3,000-a-week salary with the capital club, and is believed to have rejected a basic of £15,000 a week plus additions.

Various sources have claimed over the last few days that Rice is nearing an agreement, but according to ExWHUemployee, that is simply not the case, with ‘no communication’ taking place for ‘over a month’.

There is a genuine fear that the midfielder could decide to leave the Hammers, and he would certainly not be short of offers if that was indeed the case.

How will this one end?

Rice is desperate to stay at West Ham, and the club are desperate to keep him. The numbers have to add up, however, and that is currently not the case.

It does seem strange that Javier Hernandez is on £145,000 a week at West Ham yet the club cannot find the funds for Rice, but the latter is still in the early stages of his career, and still has plenty to prove at the top level.

Rice will argue that Under-23s at the likes of Chelsea are on more money than he is being offered, and the Blues along with Tottenham Hotspur, Manchester United and Liverpool are all said to be monitoring developments.

The teenager has impressed in his 12 appearances for West Ham this season, and certainly has the capabilities of becoming a future captain of the club.

This one is showing no signs of ending, however, which is a big concern for the Hammers.

UNITY and life at Arsenal: Football FanCast meets Mathieu Flamini

On Tuesday 6th November, in a pristine exhibition space down Langley St, just off Covent Garden, Football FanCast attended the Unity brand launch event.

Having been offered a chilled and slightly sparkling rhubarb-based health drink, we were guided through a series of exhibitions and installations, with Unity and its mission being explained along the way.

Through a claustrophobic enclosure, overburdened with discarded plastic containers and wasted packaging – designed to highlight the vast swathes of un-recycled plastic that are currently polluting the oceans and blighting the landscape – we came to a mini indoor sugarcane farm. Atmospherically lit and an arresting sight.

Beyond this, we arrived at a maze of sorts. A twisting passage upon the walls of which was inscribed facts and statistics that shed light upon the truly enormous scale of the environmental catastrophe currently threatening the planet and its people.

Following the maze, we were introduced to the full range of Unity products being launched that day – personal care and hygiene items with eco-friendliness at the forefront of their design, production and distribution.

The blue plastic nightmare room; probably the only indoor sugarcane micro-farm in central London; the maze construct; the Unity products artfully displayed upon bamboo plinths; the long-since-drained fizzy rhubarb juice – they all led to the protagonist of the day, the former Arsenal midfielder, Mathieu Flamini.

The Frenchman, along with current Arsenal star Mesut Ozil, founded Unity.

In a mocked-up living room set, beneath the busy streets of the capital, Football FanCast sat down with Flamini to discuss the brand, his ambitions, and his life in and out of the game.

“The idea was with Unity to create a brand with purpose. I have been close friends also with Mesut [Ozil] now for many years on and off the pitch.

My background is towards sustainability. I have been involved in sustainability for the last 10 years.

Mesut has been involved now in social equality now for many years.

We have maybe two different definitions of fairness. Fairness for me is going to be towards the planet, for him fairness is going to be towards the people, and together, we said ‘okay then, let’s create and do something together. Let’s create a brand which will be respectful to the people and to the planet.’ That’s how decided to create Unity.”

Flamini’s passion for addressing environmental issues is certainly nothing new. Having co-founded biochemicals company GF Biochemicals in 2008, he has become an industry pioneer in developing sustainable alternatives to oil-based products.

“For me it started ten years ago. When I started to be involved in the biochemical industry I was 24. When I decided to move forward in that direction I had the chance to meet incredible people, passionate people about the problem of climate change and sustainability and research scientists and organisations.

These people hold the facts and they hold the solutions also to be able to one day find a solution to these problems, but they don’t have the access to the people. At the end of the day, it’s the people that want the solutions. If they understand the problem and understand what are the solutions, everyone, at their own level, can have a major impact.

What we are trying to do, between these people who are scientists and who own the facts, is to try to push these facts and educate the people out there that we can’t react in 15/20 years, we have to react today to be able to build a bright future for the next generation.”

Flamini, along with his Unity co-founder, Ozil, believes that they are uniquely placed to aid this process of delivering both eco-friendly products and raising awareness of environmental issues.

“We have the possibility today to speak to all people, to speak to the people through social media and through this platform and what wanted is to create awareness, to educate and also inspire. We are followed by many young people and I think it is our responsibility to take the lead and to be able to inspire them and have a positive impact.”

Sharing a sofa with the Gunners’ former midfield enforcer, and listening to him passionately explain his involvement in and vision for Unity, it is clear that his energy and enthusiasm for this venture is genuine.

Cynicism demands jaded scepticism in this scenario, but Flamini and Ozil are two very well-off footballers who look to have come together with an ambitious plan to do a good thing.

“Football has no borders. I think it’s probably the sport that has the largest reach all around the planet, and I think it’s important for athletes to stand up for their beliefs and become leaders. We have a responsibility to show the right example.

That’s what we’re trying to do, and I believe more and more athletes are trying to do that. For me everything started with friendship. I’ve been very close with Mesut and for many years we’ve wanted to do something together.

So, that’s what excites me and hopefully Unity will be a larger brand that will be able to do much more for the people and for the planet. That’s the idea.”

Conversation then segues into Flamini’s playing career, which he is insistent, despite having left Getafe in the summer, may well not be over yet.

“Let’s say, I’m at the stage of my life and of my career when it’s not about that it’s necessary to play. It’s more about the project, the experience, and it’s also about the fact that I love football. That has been my passion for many years. I still feel good, so, if there is the right project, the right experience, why not? I haven’t turned the page.”

Whilst his time on the pitch may not be over, the 34-year-old already has a long career at the top level to look back fondly upon. Having come through the academy and established himself in the first team at Marseille, Flamini was brought to Highbury in 2004.

He went on to enjoy two spells with Arsenal – picking up three FA Cups and becoming a Champions League finalist with the club – either side of a spell at AC Milan, where he won a Serie A title. The Frenchman also represented his country on three occasions.

“It’s difficult to pick one memory, but what I want to say is, to have the chance to play for the biggest clubs and to share that with incredible people like Mesut, and to be able to not only be partners on the pitch but partners in life, and to experience all this with great individuals, for me, has been incredible.

When you go on the pitch, where we have the chance to play in front of 60,000 people, and all of these people are passionate and give everything to the club, it’s a sort of inspiration. For us, with all these experiences through the years, we want to give back to these people because they gave us so much.

Now it’s maybe our turn. It’s time for us to try to give back and that’s an opportunity we have and want to take.”

Flamini’s former teammate and current business partner, Ozil, still represents Arsenal. However, plenty has changed since our interviewee’s time at the Emirates Stadium, not least the summer departure of the man who first brought him to England, Arsene Wenger.

“He was inspiring. Definitely, I learned a lot by having the chance of working on his side. He’s the one who took me from Marseille, brought me back from Milan, and, of course, for me he’s been a mentor.

He has done so much for the club. So, obviously, I think it’s a bit weird for everyone to see Arsenal without Arsene, but it has been an incredible time for me to work with him.”

The long-serving Frenchman’s successor, Unai Emery, has made a fine start to life in the Premier League. The Gunners are currently enjoying a 17 game unbeaten run in all competitions under his stewardship.

“I think he has been doing very well up to now. It is important to give this opportunity for the new manager to prove that he is going to do well for the club, and he has been proving it until now because I think the results are speaking for themselves. I am glad that Arsenal is doing well and I really hope it will be a very exciting year for everyone.”

Things are certainly about to get tougher for the Spanish coach, as he prepares for his first ever north London derby. This fixture – of great significance to all with Arsenal or Spurs connections – returns fond memories to Flamini.

“I scored at White Hart Lane, which is a big emotional moment, of course, because I’m quite old fashioned and the derby is a big game with a lot of emotions. That’s one of the great memories I have, because I am not in a position to score every game – I’m more on the defensive side – so for me to score two goals over there was a big moment.

So, I will definitely follow this game and fingers crossed everything goes well because there will be a lot of emotion around this game.”

Arsenal’s aim for Emery’s first season shall be to keep pace with their neighbours, and hopefully triumph in the race for Champions League qualification. Flamini is certainly optimistic about his former club’s chances of a successful campaign.

“I remain an Arsenal fan. I still have a lot of friends playing for that club and I’m really tied to this club still.

I mean, I want to say right now we are competing for the title, so hopefully we will still say that at the end of the year. Anything is possible. Football can go very quickly one way or another. As an Arsenal fan, I hope we will be competing for the title until the end. That’s my wish.”

Flamini’s positive outlook on the Gunners’ fortunes reflects his countenance. As eager to listen as to speak, he has taken great care and attention in every detail of Unity’s formation, including being very generous in the time he afforded us at Football FanCast.

Aston Villa fans on Twitter loved James Chester’s performance against Middlesbrough

[ad_pod ]

Aston Villa were impressive 3-0 winners against Middlesbrough on Saturday as they continue to push towards the playoff places in the Championship, and fans of the club on Twitter loved the performance of captain James Chester.

The 29-year-old opened the scoring for the away side by turning the ball home after Boro failed to clear a corner, and the clean sheet would have been a welcome relief having conceded seven goals in the past two matches.

Chelsea loanee Tammy Abraham doubled the Villans’ lead just after the hour mark, and Glenn Whelan rounded off a strong day’s work for Dean Smith’s side with a low strike that Darren Randolph really should have saved late on.

Chester though marshalled his defence well and Middlesbrough barely created any clear cut chances, barring one Jordan Hugill shot that was impressively saved by Orjan Nyland with the score at 2-0.

Revealed: 66% of Liverpool fans want Lovren starting over Matip

[ad_pod ]

Loads of Liverpool fans have been giving their verdict on the centre back situation after Joe Gomez’s injury, and 66 per cent of polled fans want Dejan Lovren to replace the youngster.

Liverpool had an absolutely perfect week, beating Everton, Burnley and Bournemouth in the space of six days, but the injury to Gomez was a huge setback.

The 21 year-old fractured his lower leg under a challenge from Ben Mee at Turf Moor, and is expected to be out for around six weeks, meaning he will miss the entire Christmas period.

One of Lovren or Joel Matip will now have to step up, and it seems like fans prefer Lovren despite Matip’s back-to-back solid performances.

The lanky 27 year-old played well at Turf Moor and at the Vitality Stadium, two really tough outings for his first real testing action of the season.

Lovren had an excellent end to last season however and a brilliant performance at the World Cup, and the voting is firmly in the Croatian’s favour.

The 29 year-old has missed the last few games through injury, but will he walk straight back into the team when he returns?

HYS: Should Aston Villa sign Karl Darlow?

[ad_pod ]

According to The Sun, Aston Villa and Leeds United are currently both in pursuit of a £4m January deal for outcast Newcastle United goalkeeper Karl Darlow.

Darlow is no longer the Magpies’ No. 1 shot-stopper since the arrival of Martin Dubravka. Now, it looks as though the 28-year-old must seek pastures new if he is to get back to playing week in, week out.

Playmaker FC’s Matchday with Max caught up with Jamaica’s women’s team. See what happened when he met the history makers in the video below…

The Villans’ boss, Dean Smith, may be on the look out for a new ‘keeper to challenge Orjan Nyland for the No.1 spot. With an apparent price tag of just £4m, Darlow represents an affordable option for Smith to bring to Villa Park in the winter window.

However, with the likes of Tom Heaton and Fraser Forster also struggling to get game time with their current Premier League clubs Burnley and Southampton respectively, there may be more attractive options out there for Smith to explore.

What do you think, Villa fans, would you be happy to see Darlow at Villa Park?

Manchester United fans react after Paul Ince tips Steve Bruce to succeed Jose Mourinho

[ad_pod ]

As we all know, Jose Mourinho has been immediately replaced by a Manchester United legend in Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, who will be in charge of the Red Devils until the end of the season as caretaker manager.

However, in the short time that the Premier League giants were managerless, former United midfielder Paul Ince hilariously tipped another United old boy in Steve Bruce for the job, and presumably believes he would be the right man in the long-term still.

Bruce has been unemployed since being sacked by Aston Villa just a few games into the current campaign, but that didn’t stop Ince telling Paddy Power that he thinks the former Hull boss was the right man for the job.

“Yes, he’s been sacked, but we’ve all been sacked before”, said Ince as he ended his argument for Bruce to become United manager. Whatever that means.

Obviously, fans of the Red Devils were not going to take that suggestion seriously, and consequently took to Twitter to share their opinions on the outrageous claim…

Rony Lopes could fit nicely into Tottenham’s exciting side

Tottenham kept the pressure on the league leaders with a 6-2 thrashing of Everton at Goodison Park.

The dismissal of Jose Mourinho led to speculation that Mauricio Pochettino could replace the Portuguese at Manchester United which dominated the headlines yet again. However, Spurs were in no mood for dwelling on rumours and simply blew the Toffees away on Merseyside. Goals from Harry Kane, Dele Alli, Son Heung-Min and Christian Eriksen meant Tottenham were able to capitalise on Manchester City’s surprise defeat to Crystal Palace; they are now just two points behind the Citizens.

Spurs are well and truly in the title race – a feat made even greater considering they didn’t sign a single player during the summer transfer window. While their lack of spending is admirable, a few additions in the upcoming January window could give them the boost they need to close the gap at the top of the table.

A wonderful addition to the squad could be Monaco maestro – Rony Lopes. Valued at £25.2m by Transfermarkt, the Portugal international made his name in the Benfica youth academy before being poached by Manchester City in 2012. Lopes climbed the youth ranks in Manchester and impressed during a loan spell with Lille but wasn’t given a shot in the first-team. Monaco signed him permanently for £10.8m in 2015 and Lopes has developed into a critical player.

The 22-year-old ended last season with an incredible 15 league goals as well as registering five assists for his team-mates. With Monaco languishing in the Ligue 1 relegation zone, Lopes could be tempted to move back to England. As Pochettino has a reputation for bringing the best out of young players, Tottenham would be the perfect home.

The Portuguese is an excellent dribbler and can carve open defences with his expert vision – his eye for goal would also lessen the goalscoring burden on the shoulders of Harry Kane. His arrival could be the boost Spurs need to end their trophy drought.

Tottenham fans, thoughts?

Pellegrini would be making the right call by selecting Nasri for West Ham v Brighton clash

West Ham confirmed the signing of free agent Samir Nasri yesterday with the Frenchman able to prove his fitness after weeks of training with the east London club.

And while he may not be up to speed yet in most departments, the 31-year-old could still end up making his debut for his new club as early as tomorrow.

The Breakdown

According to the Daily Mail, Manuel Pellegrini could be forced to chuck Nasri straight into the West Ham starting XI due to an injury crisis within the squad.

Pellegrini is already without the likes of Andriy Yarmolenko and Javier Hernandez when it comes to attacking options, making any potential first-team inclusion for Nasri a logical one.

Felipe Anderson and Robert Snodgrass have performed exceptionally well in recent weeks but, with the predicament West Ham are currently in, Pellegrini will want to avoid either of the two picking up an injury or burning out as a result of this hectic part of the season.

Furthermore, bringing £5.4m-rated (Transfermarkt) Nasri into the side to replace Anderson or Snodgrass or even join them if Pellegrini wants to take a cautious approach with Marko Arnautovic following his hamstring problem, could be a wise move.

Whatever the case, rotation could now be key for Pellegrini if West Ham’s season is not to end in total collapse.

Liverpool fans react to Alberto Moreno’s performance against Wolves in the FA Cup

Liverpool fans have taken to Twitter to direct their anger towards Alberto Moreno, after the full-back put in a poor performance against Wolves in the FA Cup third round defeat at the Molineux.

Moreno has recently spoken to the media about his frustration regarding a lack of game time, but he did himself no favours with his showing against Nuno Espirito Santo’s men as he endured a torrid evening.

The Spaniard looked out of his depth against the likes of Raul Jimenez, Diogo Jota and Ivan Cavaleiro, when he really needed to grasp a rare opportunity to impress Jurgen Klopp and prove he is good enough to play for the Reds.

Naturally, when a player is underperforming, Liverpool fans aren’t slow to let them know it, but the annoyance towards Moreno has only been heightened by his recent comments.

Let’s take a look at some of the best tweets from fans who watched their side bow out of the FA Cup early on once again…
