Performance in Numbers: Raul Jimenez struggles in Wolves’ win over Arsenal

[ad_pod ]

To pardon the pun, Nuno Santo’s team were all over Arsenal like a pack of wolves on Wednesday evening. They were exceptional, putting a shambolic and embarrassing Gunners team to the sword as they won 3-1 at Molineux.

Diogo Jota and Ruben Neves were both vital to the win and the latter returned to form in some fashion. The team as a whole were also back in form, ending a run of three matches without a victory.

But of course they’d turn up against a big side. Wolves have done it so often since being promoted and they more than capitalised on Arsenal’s mental block away from home to pick up their 16th point against one of the top six in 2018/19.

But in Wolves’ ruthless display, one man and their most potent player this season nearly went missing. Raul Jimenez was barely involved in the build-up play on the night, and his displays since becoming the club’s record signing at the start of the month have dropped off a little.

Indeed the rest of the team have been poor since the FA Cup semi-final but Jimenez’s performances over the last three games have seen him go goalless, something that might develop into a concern considering the £30m they’ve now spent on him.

The Midlands club scored three on Wednesday but it could have been a lot more, particularly if Jimenez had been in form.

He spurned a fantastic chance with the score at 0-0, firing over from close range after Willy Boly’s flick on.

It summed up his day, failing to have a single effort on target whilst even against an Arsenal defence that has been bullied repeatedly, he didn’t win any aerial duels.

Raul Jimenez is turning it on for Wolves and Mexico right now! He definitely deserves the song in the video below…

His lack of dribbles and the fact he was also dispossessed led to a further disappointing evening for the Mexican who never really found himself in the thick of the action.

The 27-year-old has been magnificent this season and there is no denying his quality. After all, he’s found the net on 17 occasions, but this was a rare off day and one where Jota outshone him.

Tottenham would be wise to take up Napoli’s reported offer for Kieran Trippier

Dream come true: Kieran Trippier a target for Napoli, this summer.

As per Sky Italia’s Gianluca Di Marzio, Napoli are chasing Tottenham and England defender Kieran Trippier as their next right-back, but their initial bid for the player did not meet Spurs’ notoriously high demands.

Daniel Levy and company saw Trippier come into his own at the World Cup with England last summer, which followed an already impressive season filling in for the departed Kyle Walker, who joined Manchester City in 2017.

However, the Englishman has not quite hit the right notes this season and has been widely criticised for his abysmal defensive efforts and very limited attacking input, which is usually his one saving grace.

Not that this has stopped interest flooding in, with reports from Italy suggesting that Napoli have already lodged a surprise bid estimated around £15.5million to £17.3million.

Though this bid has been rejected by the club as significantly too low, with the report suggesting that they are only willing to listen to offers no less than £30millon, much to the dismay of Spurs fans – we are sure.

Indeed, spend enough time on social media reading posts under the tag of ‘Kieran Trippier’ or listening to the audible groans that ring out at home games and you will soon realise that the general consensus among the Lilywhites faithful is that the former Burnley man would be driven to Timbuktu if it meant they never had to see him again. To turn down a sizeable offer, then, is sacrilege.

Spurs fans, would you be happy to let Trippier go for less than £20million? Join the discussion by commenting below…

Well deserved: Celtic fans react as James Forrest wins POTY

[ad_pod ]

Celtic fans have taken to Twitter to react after James Forrest was named as the PFA Premiership Player of the Year.

The Scottish international has enjoyed an remarkable season for the Bhoys, scoring 17 goals and recording a whopping 20 assists across all competitions as Celtic won the title for the eighth year in a row.

Controversial. Uncompromising. Leader. C’mon the Hoops’ Keith talks the future of Celtic’s evergreen captain Scott Borwn in the video below…

Impressively, the 27-year-old also scored five goals for his country in the UEFA Nations League in just three games, including a well taken hat-trick.

Forrest’s form has been one of the main reasons behind the Scottish giants’ success this season, and he could yet end the season with a treble of trophies under his belt – Neil Lennon’s men can secure a domestic clean sweep of trophies if they beat Hearts in the Scottish Cup final.

Kristoffer Ajer, Dedryck Boyata, Callum McGregor and Scott Brown were also honoured at the awards ceremony with a place in the PFA Team of the Year, but let’s see what the Celtic fans on Twitter were saying about Forrest’s accolade…

Phenomenon: Pep Guardiola’s record in the league is a sight to behold

[ad_pod ]We all know he’s a perfectionist. That much goes without saying.Pep Guardiola is a man who strives for every last detail to be utterly sound. Even last season, when his Manchester City side had the title sewn up with 97 points, he still looked stressed on the touchline at St Mary’s as his side looked to be heading for a 0-0 draw on the final day, which would have left them on 98 points.Thankfully, Gabriel Jesus netted a delicate lob in stoppage time, and the Spanish coach was literally jumping for joy; he wanted, needed his side to become centurions, or he would’ve been left feeling dissatisfied despite an already impressive title success.Relive all the drama of Man City v Spurs through the eyes Spurs’ fans in the video below…Guardiola has managed, and succeeded, at three of the biggest clubs in Europe: Barcelona, Bayern Munich and now Manchester City.At those clubs, he has won three La Liga titles, three Bundesliga crowns, two Premier League successes, the Champions League twice and a significant number of domestic trophies. Those are the black-and-white details of his vast managerial qualities, but delve a bit deeper, and there’s one stat that is truly mind blowing.

Across his 10 seasons as a coach, Guardiola has taken an astounding 906 points out of a possible 1104, which works out at 82% – that is absurd.

To only drop 18% of the possible points on offer takes some doing, and undoubtedly cements the Spaniard as one of the greatest managerial minds in football history.

You can call him a chequebook manager, a fraud or say he has always had it easy at each of his clubs, but that would be disrespectful to what he has achieved.

In the modern game, almost every boss at a top club has funds, groundbreaking facilities and other advantageous features.

The difference with Guardiola is that he is obsessed not with winning but by doing things the right way and obtaining perfection, so that the winning comes without even thinking about it.

He is a true great, and that one stat just sums up how ruthlessly efficient he is.

Pundit View: Davie Hay issues honest verdict on whether Neil Lennon will get Celtic job

[ad_pod ]

Former Celtic player Davie Hay has issued his honest verdict on what the future holds for Neil Lennon at the club in his latest Glasgow Evening Times column, and has hinted that he has changed his own mind on the matter.

What’s the word, then?

Well, the Bhoys’ hierarchy face a decision in the coming weeks as to whether they are going to hand caretaker manager Lennon a contract beyond the end of the campaign, or switch their attentions elsewhere.

The Northern Irishman looked to be in a good position to get the job following an unbeaten run that saw him steer the club to the Scottish Premiership title despite Brendan Rodgers’ mid-season exit, but the 2-0 defeat to Rangers last weekend was surely a big blot on his copybook.

Hay has issued his latest verdict on whether Lennon will get the job via his Glasgow Evening Times column: “If I was pressed on whether I think he will get it or not, I’m now really not so sure.”

Change of mind?

The fact that he says he is “now not really so sure” indicates that he thought the 47-year-old was essentially a shoo-in for the role previously.

Controversial. Uncompromising. Leader. C’mon the Hoops’ Keith talks the future of Celtic’s evergreen captain Scott Brown in the video below…

The Old Firm defeat and some of the criticism Lennon has received as a result has clearly made an impact, given Hay’s latest words.

He’s right to be unsure now as well, with the likes of Slaven Bilic and Carlos Carvalhal throwing their hat into the ring for the job just this week, with Rafa Benitez another name mentioned.

There appears to be a real feeling that the job is more up for grabs than it might have been previously, and the former Hibernian manager may well be relying on completing the treble-treble against Hearts at the end of the month to boost his chances again.

Bitten on the backside: Allardyce’s Tosun & Walcott comments now look misjudged

[ad_pod ]

Upon splashing out nearly £50m on Theo Walcott and Cenk Tosun in his one and only transfer window as Everton boss, Sam Allardyce was ecstatic to get those two deals over the line.

After the Turkey international Tosun was signed for £27m, the former England manager said: “He is a player who is desperate to come to play in the Premier League so I like that sound of all of what he is saying and what he has done in the past as a footballer, particularly recently as he is Turkey’s No. 1 striker.

“I don’t think you can look at more than what we have done and think that this is, for what is available at the price we are paying, the best in Europe at the moment.”

In this era of ‘big 6’ dominance, has finishing 7th become as good as winning a trophy? The Pl>ymaker FC squad have their say in the video below…

£27m? As the best deal available in Europe at the time? Allardyce must’ve been having a laugh; remember that Tosun was signed in the same window that Chelsea secured Olivier Giroud for £18m and Tottenham got Lucas Moura for £23m!

When speaking about the signing of Walcott for £20m, Allardyce said: “He is at a prime age. The prime age of a professional footballer is between 25, 26 and 30, 31. That is when they appear, by all research today, to be at the peak of their careers.

“We have not got too many players in that age bracket in the squad, so he adds one to that. He has a lot of experience and will hopefully provide a lot of excitement for the Everton fans and for us, in terms of getting results, assists and scoring goals.”

It seems as if the former Crystal Palace boss didn’t do his research on Walcott thoroughly enough, as the 30-year-old certainly didn’t arrive at Goodison Park in the peak of his career; he has mustered up just nine goals and five assists in 54 appearances for the Toffees.

Allardyce’s immeasurable confidence in his two signings as Everton boss seems especially foolish now, as the pair could be considered huge flops for the price tag they were signed for as well as the huge wages they have ‘earned’ on Merseyside – Walcott reportedly earns £100,000-a-week, whilst Tosun picks up £60,000-a-week.

A sentiment supported by the Everton supporters’ hatred of him, Allardyce didn’t get much right during his time in the Goodison Park dugout, other than helping the club avoid relegation perhaps.

His two marquee captures have burdened the club more than benefited them, and his assurance that they would be excellent additions has turned out to look silly.
