Speaking to Sky Sports (as quoted by The Manchester Evening News), Graeme Souness has insisted Jonny Evans would walk into the current Manchester United team.

What did he say?

The 31-year-old played 198 times for the Red Devils in the early stages of his professional career, but is now part of the first-choice back four at fellow Premier League side Leicester.

Now, Souness has suggested that despite his increasing age, Evans still possesses some of the key qualities that mark him out as one of the better defenders in the league.

He said: “I’m an enormous fan, of this guy (Evans) as well. I think at 31, he may have not reached his peak yet. When you look at Man United have at the back, he walks into the Man United team, for me. He looks to be a really solid character, not short of ability, a modern centre-back at times, he’s more than comfortable to take it in areas where a lot of centre-backs wouldn’t.

“He can make passes, senses danger, of course, he should at 31, but he’s an all-round top-class centre-half for me.”

Late bloomer

Despite making just short of 200 appearances for the club, Evans never really established himself as one of the first names on the team-sheet at Old Trafford. The Northern Ireland international has since stepped up his game considerably however, and in his debut campaign with Leicester last season, averaged impressive numbers of 1 tackle, 1.4 interceptions and 6.1 clearances per game.

Would he have become the centre-half he is now if he had just remained at United? Probably not. His exposure to consistent first-team football at Premier League level has helped him massively, and he may well be the ideal partner to Harry Maguire – his former Leicester teammate of course.

Compared to Maguire’s current partner in crime, Victor Lindelof, Evans has averaged more tackles, clearances and blocks this season in the Premier League, whilst he has also managed to pick up an assist. United could certainly do a lot worse than bringing the veteran defender back.

Barnsley sit in 22nd place in the Championship, having taken just six points from their first 10 games, but their last-minute goal to earn a point against Derby County on Wednesday night gave fans a long-awaited moment of joy.

Striker Cauley Woodrow made it 2-2 in the 94th minute and it could provide the boost they need between now and Christmas.

Woodrow has scored three goals from seven Championship appearances this season and that’s fine form considering the club have only netted seven all season so far. The number nine bagged 16 league goals for the Tykes while on loan last term and, given his importance, surely their survival hopes largely rest on him.

Fans know that too, and they showed their support for the 24-year-old on Twitter when he posted a picture of his celebrations after the game against Derby. The caption included: “Fantastic tonight, to get a draw in 94th-minute amazing scenes…don’t matter how they go in”.

In an interview with  The Evening Times former Celtic forward and Sky Sports pundit, Andy Walker, has claimed that any title challenge could go down “to the wire” this season.

His comments are inspired by the weekend’s developments that saw the Parkhead side lose their grip on top spot following the shock 2-0 defeat to Livingston.

Walker has been effusive in his praise of the Ibrox men which won’t go down well with his Paradise brethren, reflecting on Rangers’ recent form he claims that:

“It’s a real boost for Steven Gerrard to see his team react in the way they have since losing to Celtic at Ibrox. I think you have to admire Rangers and the way they have responded after losing that game”.

“Apart from the [Europa League] defeat against Young Boys, their response has been terrific. They obviously would have had a big lift from Celtic losing [to Livingston] and the crowd would have been up for it, the players were up for it”.

“And when you see Jermain Defoe coming in and taking the place of Alfredo Morelos, with the amount of goals they’ve scored already, as long as they steer clear of injury then Rangers have got every chance”.

“From middle to front, they’re creating chances and the response since losing to Celtic has been absolutely first class. And, make no doubt, the title race is going all the way to the end of the season”.

There’s no doubt about Rangers’ improvements in squad depth this season, being able to call up on Jermain Defoe as back-up to Alfredo Morelos for a whole campaign instead of Kyle Lafferty and being able to beat teams like Hamilton comfortably with a number of first-team regulars rested. The likes of Joe Aribo, Brandon Barker and Greg Stewart have all chipped in with goals this season, after all.

As with most close title races, the fine margins can be what decides who lifts the trophy at the end of the season and, at the moment, it is the Gers that are edging it.

A late winner against Kilmarnock and a single goal victory over St Mirren with only Borna Barisic’s excellent free-kick the difference between the two sides could easily have been four points dropped.

Compare this to Celtic in the last two weeks, two penalty claims turned down against Hibernian and Ryan Christie sent-off against Livingston after just 25 minutes. Five points dropped in two games that they would expect to win comfortably. All it takes is a bad referee decision or a moment of madness from an individual to cost a team points.

Rangers are in a better position to challenge Celtic for the title this year but October, after eight league games, isn’t the time to make the judgement. Until we get deeper into the campaign, Rangers have just made a good start to the season and Walker is just jumping on the bandwagon.

ولكن بحسب الصحفي، إيان ماكجاري، في برنامج “Transfer Window Podcast” الإذاعي الإنجليزي ربما يكون مهاجم يوفنتوس والأرجنتين، باولو ديبالا، هو البديل المناسب لرحيل مواطنه أجويرو.

ديبالا هناك أنباء كثيرة حول مستقبله في الفترة السابقة، وارتبط بالرحيل عن يوفنتوس أكثر من مرة وهو ما فتح الباب أمام أندية مثل باريس سان جيرمان وبرشلونة لضمه بعد نهاية الموسم الحالي.

ولكن دخل مانشستر سيتي في سباق التعاقد مع ديبالا كخيار ثالث بعد هالاند وكين في حالة عدم نجاحهما في ضم أي منهما.

Leeds United defender Ben White has been one of the Championship’s standout players this season and has helped Marcelo Bielsa’s side to become the best defensive team in the league, conceding just seven goals.

White has played every minute of league action so far and has averaged a very respectable 7.33 rating in that time. The 22-year-old has even played both League Cup fixtures this season, starting one and coming off the bench for the other, as he continues to prove how vital he is for Leeds’ backline.

However, as the Whites failed to pencil in an option to buy when he signed on loan from Brighton & Hove Albion, it seems unlikely that the 6 foot 1 Englishman will be at Elland Road next season, especially if they fail to win promotion to the Premier League.

Furthermore, not only will the Seagulls surely do what they can to keep him after such stellar form, it should be expected that White will be subject to heavy transfer speculation as a result. The defender is already being linked with a £20m move to Liverpool, as the Reds look to replace Dejan Lovren for the future.

Of course, it will be tough for anybody to turn down the Merseyside giants right now, considering they hold the European crown and are on a very positive course to win the Premier League title. White may not become a regular for Liverpool, but would surely consider such a lucrative move over a stay at Elland Road or even the Amex.

Truthfully, Leeds will not have a say in either matter, as White appears destined to depart regardless. Should that be the case, the Yorkshire club will miss the defender greatly especially considering he has averaged 2.4 tackles and 3.3 interceptions per game so far in the league.

Leeds and Bielsa must consider these reports and the inevitability that White will be returning to Brighton and therefore delve into the market for a new centre-back, with Gaetano Berardi also out of contract at the same time as White leaves.

Since arriving from Borussia Dortmund in 2016 for a fee in the region of £20m, Ilkay Gundogan has endured a mixed time at Manchester City.

The 28-year-old has shown flashes of the quality he possesses, but has also frustratingly disappointed too. In the shock 2-0 defeat to Wolves in the Premier League, some City fans flooded to Twitter to voice their anger and disappointment with the midfielder’s poor showing.

But the international break appears to have done Gundogan the world of good. The former Dortmund man scored twice and provided a further assist in Germany’s 3-0 win over Estonia on Sunday.

After watching the midfielder’s superb display in EURO 2020 qualifying action, City supporters took to Twitter to share their thoughts about the matter.

Many Citizens fans hailed Gundogan for his performance, and one supporter in particular insisted he did a great job in “silencing those haters”.

Some even compared his display to Spain legend Xavi, and felt he is returning to peak form in a timely manner for the side.

واستطرد: “من الواضح أن ميسي كان لديه صديق في مباراة كاستيلديفيلس وقد جاء لرؤيته، من هو الرجل الذي لا يريد صورة معه؟ حسنًا، هذا أنا! وهكذا قلت لا، شكرًا أنا بخير وأريد أن أستمر في اللعب!”.

وأكمل: “إنها مجرد صورة، أليس كذلك؟ لكن، رغماً عني، أوقفوني بجوار ميسي والتقطوا الصورة، لم أخبره بأي شيء، انتظرت انتهاء التصوير ثم عدت للعب كما لو كنت قد أسديت له معروفًا”.

وأردف: “في النهاية، أنا سعيد لأنهم أجبروني على أخذ تلك الصورة، لأنني ما زلت أمتلكها في المنزل، ومع ذلك، في ذلك الوقت، لم أكن سعيدًا لأن وقت اللعب الثمين قد توقف، حتى من قبل أيقونة كرة قدم”.
