Birmingham goalkeeper Lee Camp’s mentality is a concern

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Opinion series, which provides analysis, insight and opinion on any issue within the beautiful game, from Paul Pogba’s haircuts to League Two relegation battles…

At least he’s had a long time to think about it.

Having put an end to a bit of a bad run of form against Middlesbrough before the international break, it has given parts of the Blues squad the chance to reflect on how things have been going so far this season.

Blues stopper Lee Camp has been talking about the adjustments that the players have had to make under new management and how the team have been adjusting to all the changes:

“The Club’s obviously in a period of transition, the owners and the board want to play a different way and there are different demands on the team this year. There are going to be teething problems and a little bit of uncertainty when you are trying to change a style of play and it all takes time and practise and repetition.”

Later on, he spoke about the victory against Boro and what gave them the motivation to pull out the win:

“We were told it was one of the only games in the world being shown live so all eyes would be watching and at home you want to put in a performance and make the place as much as a fortress as possible.”

One thing that should be a concern about his words is the fact that he mentions the eyes of the world is enough to motivate them to put in an extra performance. Surely they shouldn’t need that sort of motivation to perform just because they are on TV.

If that is the only thing that is getting Birmingham players motivated and willing to perform, the fact that they don’t want to find themselves shown up on TV as it were, then there is a serious problem off the pitch that really needs to be addressed.

In the grand scheme of things, something as little as that shouldn’t have such a big say on the mentality of a player.

It’s also interesting to note that at no time during the interview did he speak about his own errors in the games against Derby County and Wigan Athletic.

As we have noted before on Football FanCast, they have started to creep into his game and he needs to sort them out before he can really start talking about the rest of his teammates.

In theory, Camp should be motivated by his mistakes alone. If we consider the goalkeeper in isolation, that should be enough to make him improve, not the mere presence of a TV camera.

It’s a classic mantra that some players often perform better when they’re on television but it’s perhaps a questionable statement from the ‘keeper.

The Athletic journalist Greg O’Keeffe delivers encouraging verdict on Marco Silva

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Pundit View series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent quotes from journalists, pundits, players and managers…

Journalist Greg O’Keeffe has praised Marco Silva for his determined managerial efforts against West Ham United, claiming the Portuguese arrived at Goodison Park with a different mentality to previous games.

What did he say?

Everton returned to winning ways over the weekend after their impressive 2-0 win over the Hammers. It was indeed the first time Everton looked convincing in the Premier League, having looked far superior to Manuel Pellegrini’s side throughout.

It now means that the Toffees have jumped out of the relegation zone and into 15th on 10 points – the same as Manchester United. O’Keeffe wrote for The Athletic: “Marco Silva arrived at Goodison Park on Saturday morning looking like he meant business.

“He stepped off Everton’s team coach with his head bowed and a steely look in his eyes. He led his team through the players’ entrance and would continue to lead them all afternoon. “

O’Keeffe also touches on how majority shareholder Farhad Moshiri was seen at Goodison Park in what was a rare attendance on Merseyside for him.

Silva picked the perfect time

As Moshiri was watching the game, it seems as if Silva picked the perfect time to show the owner what he can do. Over the international break, it was reported by the Daily Star that the Iranian handed the manager the next three games to save his job.

So, with Moshiri in attendance, it’s fair to say that Silva knocked one of those games down and in convincing fashion as well. Across the pitch, players put in inspiring performances, whilst the boss at the helm was seen to put in a motivational, passionate display from the touchline.

Players who have often struggled surprisingly stepped up for Silva, such as Theo Walcott and Yerry Mina.

The key now for the Everton boss is to build and grow his team. The next two games for 42-year-old are the away trip to Brighton & Hove Albion and the Carabao Cup clash at Goodison Park with Watford. If the former Hornets boss can pick up three points on the south coast and get past his old side in the League Cup, he may well have secured his future on Merseyside, for now at least.

One thing is for certain, regardless of the performance, he must keep up this positive and inspiring attitude that O’Keeffe saw on display.

These characteristics may prove vital in motivating his side.

Leeds fans on Twitter are buzzing after Phil Hay confirms injury returns

Leeds United fans on Twitter are buzzing after Phil Hay tweeted to confirm that Liam Cooper and Jamie Shackleton are back fit after their injuries. The Scot is back sooner than expected as it was claimed that he would be out for six weeks after picking up an injury against West Brom earlier this month.Watch Leeds United Live Streams With StreamFootball.tv Below

Leeds’ defence has been average since he was ruled out, conceding twice to Millwall and also against Preston, but his return will undoubtedly be a big boost to the entire team.

With Adam Forshaw also struggling with injury, Jamie Shackleton has been a big miss as Marcelo Bielsa has been forced to play Stuart Dallas out of position in central midfield.

Whether or not either of these two returning stars are placed immediately into the starting XI on Saturday remains to be seen, but the fans are buzzing to hear that they’re back in contention.

Arsenal fans laud Joe Willock as Patrick Vieira "regen" after EFL Cup strike

Many Arsenal fans have lauded Joe Willock as being a regeneration of Gunners legend Patrick Vieira, after the midfielder struck from range against Liverpool in the Carabao Cup.

Willock must have thought he had scored his side’s winning goal in spectacular fashion in the 70th-minute, when the 20-year-old picked the ball up just inside the Liverpool half, glided past Adam Lallana and unleashed a fierce, whipped strike into the top-left corner.

Caoimhin Kelleher could get nowhere near to save his shot, but the Anfield outfit pulled themselves back level when Divock Origi secured his brace by pulling away from his marker to volley home a stoppage-time equaliser.

Find out who is each Premier League club’s biggest bargain in the video below…

Arsenal had overcome an early own goal by Shkodran Mustafi to hold a 3-1 lead over Liverpool approaching half-time, but found themselves initially pegged back minutes before the break when James Milner tucked home from the spot.

The Gunners rallied on with Ainsley Maitland-Niles restoring their two-goal lead, only for Jurgen Klopp’s Reds to fight back and snatch their first equaliser through Origi, following Alex Oxlade-Chamberlin lashing home an effort Mustafi ducked out the way of.

Willock’s goal, though, left a lasting impression on many Arsenal fans despite their side going on to lose on penalties, with supporters lauding the 5 ft 8 youngster as a regeneration of Vieira.

The French icon famously struck a similar strike against Newcastle United at Highbury in April 1998, as the North London side went on to win the Premier League title.

Vieira would win the World Cup that summer, and added a further two English top-flight crowns and four FA Cups to his trophy cabinet during his time with Arsenal.

Willock’s appearance vs Liverpool was his 30th first-team game for the Gunners, while his strike was his seventh in senior football.

Everton’s Mason Holgate needs to ‘get out’ of the club, says Danny Mills

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Pundit View series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent quotes from journalists, pundits, players and managers…

Former England international Danny Mills believes Mason Holgate must leave the club if he wants to find more game time.

What did he say?

Holgate started the away defeat at Brighton & Hove Albion because of the injury to Yerry Mina, whilst he kept his place against Watford as Michael Keane was rested. The 23-year-old has not been a regular for Everton and has only been seen more recently because of injuries.

In fact, Keane has started every league game, whilst the trip to the Amex was Mina’s first time missing out in the league this season. As a result of his lack of minutes, Mills believes Holgate must leave Goodison Park.

When asked if Holgate has lived up to expectations, Mills told Football Insider: “No, maybe he needs another loan spell or whatever to get out and play consistently, week in, week out.

“There’s a lot of players at Everton, they’ve brought in a lot of quality, have they performed to their best? Have they performed under the pressures that they need to do? I’m not sure many of them could say yes.”

Not a youngster anymore

Holgate is 23 now and simply has to be playing on a consistent basis, whether that be on loan or at Goodison Park. The days of settling for a sporadic role in the side and playing in the domestic cup games to gain experience have passed.

As Mills suggests, at his age he must be playing on a regular basis, especially if he has any future dreams of  making a statement to Gareth Southgate for England.

For example, players such as Keane have been regulars for teams for a number of years. Prior to his move to Merseyside, the former Manchester United man was a big player for Burnley, missing just five league games over two seasons.

Now, Keane has found his way into the England setup and become a regular at the back for Everton. Holgate could do the same, as he has proven in the past two games he is a man with quality and potential to hold is own against Premier League opposition.

His assist against Brighton and his goal and a clean sheet against Watford prove that he can be a great asset, but he needs to continue playing on a regular basis to maximise his potential.

Steve Bruce unable to play attacking football at Newcastle, says Charlie Nicholas

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Pundit View series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent quotes from journalists, pundits, players and managers…

Charlie Nicholas believes that the visit of Bournemouth is a game Newcastle could win quite easily, particularly given their current form.

What did he say?

Newcastle have performed well in spurts this season but one thing they lack is consistency, having failed to register back-to-back wins in the Premier League.

The Cherries have recorded two away wins so far, more than the Magpies have managed at St James’ Park, so they will be no pushovers, and should be feeling buoyant after ending a goal drought of nearly six hours against Manchester United last week.

Nicholas suggested that Bruce is an attack-minded manager who is doing the best he can with the players at his disposal, but he did point to three players who could provide the key going forward.

Writing in his Premier League predictions for Sky Sports, he said:

“I know Steve Bruce likes to play attacking football, but he cannot do so with this team. Miguel Almiron is like a little whippet who cannot slow down to finish.

“The fans love him as he is energetic, which I do like about him, but the other phases of his play need to come sharpish. Allan Saint-Maximin is skilful and unpredictable, while Jonjo Shelvey is back in the team. If Newcastle win, they are heading towards the top end of the table.”

The former striker also noted the Cherries’ prowess in attack, stating they “can cause any team problems”, which is a worry for the Magpies given Martin Dubravka has had to make 36 saves this year – the joint-third highest amount in the division.

Will counter-attack style work?

Newcastle have struggled at home in the main this term. From their five league games at St James’ Park they have scored just three goals and a lack of ambition and ideas going forward has let them down.

The front-three showed signs of potential in the win over West Ham last week, but they had space to run into and the counter-attack worked in Newcastle’s favour.

At home to Bournemouth it is likely that they won’t get such joy in behind the defence, and that could limit the influence of the wingers, particularly Almiron.

That being said, it is difficult to envisage Bruce moving away from his settled system of five-at-the-back, but with the Cherries’ front-three often prolific, scoring 35 goals between them last season, and Joshua King finding his scoring boots last week, that may be the best option to nullify the visitors’ attack.

If Newcastle manage that, they may only need one goal to win it in order to record their first back-to-back victories this term.
