Man Utd legend Gary Neville urges Solskjaer to be "selfish" like Jose Mourinho

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Pundit View series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent quotes from journalists, pundits, players and managers…

Speaking on Sky Sports’ Monday Night Football, Manchester United legend Gary Neville has urged Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to be “selfish” in the upcoming January transfer window.

What did he say?

The Red Devils pulled off just three permanent summer signings in Daniel James, Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Harry Maguire. Despite losing a host of players, including the likes of Romelu Lukaku and Alexis Sanchez, United failed to bring in replacements.

And having seen the side’s young players go 2-0 down at Sheffield United before clinching a dramatic 3-3 draw, Neville insisted Solskjaer desperately needs to add more experienced players to the side.

He said: “They haven’t got senior players to let them know the expectation of what’s required in a football team. They don’t know how to approach a Premier League away game. They don’t understand that it’s different playing at Old Trafford than away from home. They don’t have the experience or maturity. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has to go and spend the club’s money for himself, on two or three experienced players.

“He must demand it, he’s not going to be there to see the fruits of the labour that he’s putting in because there’s a lot of good young players on that pitch that I enjoy watching, but unless they get the players in and around them quickly, they’ll not see the standard and won’t have the maturity.

“Ole’s going to have to be selfish. He’s going to have to have that ruthless streak that a (Jose) Mourinho has, or a (Antonio) Conte has, and he’s going to have to go and spend the club’s money in the January window and put two or three experienced players in that group and they could come alive.”

Needs must

Make no mistake about it, Solskjaer must address some of the key areas for concern in the January window. Waiting until next summer to do something about it would place even greater doubt on their ability to finish in the top four – they currently find themselves nine points behind fourth-placed Chelsea.

If the United boss simply towed the club line and refrained from bringing in a new striker and midfielder in the summer, then he has to be more selfish in January as Neville alludes to. He has to stamp his authority and take the game to Ed Woodward, and demand that he backs him in the transfer market. The winter window promises to be a pivotal point in the Red Devils’ campaign, and it all rests on whether Solskjaer can really dip his toes into the water.

If he can embrace some of the cut-throat elements of Mourinho’s style of management, then he stands a much better chance of not having Woodward simply roll him over.

Newcastle fans react to Charlie Nicholas’ comments about Rafa Benitez

Steve Bruce’s Newcastle side have been very inconsistent since he arrived at the club, but according to Sky Sports’ Charlie Nicholas, he is doing a better job than Rafa Benitez.

It is quite an odd assessment to make and one that he may not have dared to assert after their pitiful defeat at Aston Villa, though a draw with Manchester City does give the Magpies boss some credibility.

However, Rafa Benitez beat the champions last season with a squad that didn’t contain signings like Joelinton and Miguel Almiron.

Fans certainly think Nicholas is completely wrong in his comments, though Newcastle have been nicking points here and there recently, as he suggests.

Nicholas also claimed that Bruce has brought passion back to Newcastle, but how he has come by that judgement is anyone’s guess, as if anything attendances and the mood around St James’ Park have declined.

It was Benitez’s name on the fans lips at Fulham at the end of last season, something which Bruce is yet to enjoy, and likely won’t until he makes a significant impact on the club.

There is no doubt that the Magpies boss faces a bit of an uphill battle to sway fan opinion, and slowly but surely he is beginning to impress some, though there will seemingly always be love for Benitez.

In other Newcastle news, fans have been lavishing praise on a top performer following his display against Man City and subsequent inclusion in Alan Shearer’s Premier League Team of the Week.

Liverpool fans react to the news they are in for Takumi Minamino

Liverpool had a tough first-half against RB Salzburg in the Champions League on Tuesday.

The Austrian side were fantastic before the break, managing six shots on target, and, although the Reds were the better team after the interval, Jesse Marsch can be proud of his players, just as he will have been in October when his side pushed Liverpool all the way at Anfield before losing 4-3.

Can you name the result these iconic Liverpool images belong to? Give it a go now…

Takumi Minamino was one of the players to impress. He wasn’t on the scoresheet – unlike he was in front of the Kop – but he did manage three key passes, as well as two dribbles. He stood out, and now he is being linked with a move to the Premier League club he has faced twice this term.

The club’s supporters are delighted with the update, and they have taken to Twitter to share their pleasure with the reported deal.

Indeed, based on his displays this term – he has nine goals and 11 assists in 21 matches in all competitions – he would be a fantastic fit for the Reds, and his work-rate would be much appreciated by Jurgen Klopp.

Many fans have focused on the potential transfer fee. He is said to have a release clause of just £7.25m, and the supporters are sure this represents a bargain.

You are unlikely to find a better deal for a player that has so many goal contributions this term, but it would be interesting to see whether he could translate that form to a far more competitive league.

One fan, however, has indicated that Liverpool are in need of a new recruit in another area of the pitch.

With Dejan Lovren having picked up a hamstring injury, he does have a point.

It remains to be seen whether the Japan international makes the move to Anfield.

Profit Players: David de Gea has more than justified his price tag at Manchester United

This article forms part of our Profit Players feature series, which is where Football Transfer Tavern takes a look at how well a player has fared since being signed or sold, using statistical figures and statements from pundits to prove how good of a deal the club managed to achieve.

After arriving at Old Trafford all the way back in 2011, it is fair to say David de Gea had a lot of expectations on his young shoulders. Nearly nine years later, he has firmly established himself as the number one goalkeeper at Manchester United.

De Gea joined Manchester United from Atletico Madrid for £18.9m on a five-year-deal, teaming up with Sir Alex Ferguson’s side shortly after the Red Devils had won their 12th Premier League title.

His arrival coincided with Edwin van der Sar’s retirement, and the Spaniard had big gloves to fill, as the legendary Dutchman made over 250 appearances for United, saving 135 clean sheets in all competitions.

Almost immediately, De Gea was thrown in at the deep end, as he faced derby rivals Manchester City in the Community Shield. His performance drew criticism from fans and pundits alike, although Fergie’s men went on to win 3-2. He made his league debut in the 2-1 win away to West Bromwich Albion one week later and allowed a Shane Long shot to go past him into the back of the net (The Sun).

The 20-year-old was subsequently dropped for Anders Lindegaard.

However, he didn’t allow this to deter him, and carried out a vigorous training programme to meet the physical demands of the English top flight.

Following a string of four games on the bench, he earned himself a recall to the starting lineup, and demonstrated his full potential in a 3-3 draw with Chelsea.

Evidently, De Gea hasn’t once looked back, as he settled into the role of Ferguson’s first-choice keeper, and it has remained that way ever since, despite the changes in managers over the years.

In total, the Spanish international played in 80 games under the legendary Scotsman, lifting the Premier League trophy in his final season in charge.

During David Moyes’ infamous time at the Theatre of Dreams, it can be said De Gea single-handedly saved his job more often than not, and he was named Manchester United’s Player of the Year in recognition of his incredible efforts. He went on to earn this award for the next couple of seasons in a row.

Indeed, the shot stopper has consistently produced match-winning performances when the Red Devils have needed him the most, and his displays between the sticks attracted attention from La Liga giants Real Madrid in 2015.

The transfer saga overshadowed the entire summer that year, but he ended up staying at Old Trafford, and, ever the consummate professional, he returned to his posts.

Instead of turning his back on the club, De Gea helped Louis van Gaal’s side win the FA Cup in 2016, before picking up the League Cup and Europa League title under the Dutchman’s replacement, Jose Mourinho (Transfermarkt).

As a result of these heroics over the years, his market value dramatically rose from £16.2m in August 2014 to £63m by December 2018. Admittedly, this has now dropped to £36m, although this can be attributed to the economic uncertainty surrounding pandemic, and is still double the original fee the board paid Los Rojiblancos (Transfermarkt).

The 29-year-old has made 304 appearances in the Premier League so far, keeping 108 clean sheets, making a staggering 848 saves, taking 180 high claims, and successfully completing 84 sweeper clearances.

Despite his long spell with United, the veteran has only made 13 errors leading to goals, whereas former Arsenal and Chelsea keeper Petr Cech racked up 24 errors in total. His loyal service to the club has been rewarded with another contract extension which is set to expire in June 2023.

All things considered, De Gea has more than justified his price tag, as he has continued to help the Red Devils add to their impressive collection of silverware, and been recognised with a number of awards up until now.

Aston Villa: Pundits discuss Jack Grealish’s potential exit

Sky Sports’ Sunday Supplement panel of pundits have said Jack Grealish’s potential move to Manchester United will depend on whether or not Aston Villa remain in the Premier League.

Villa’s club captain Grealish has been excellent this term, arguably having his best season for the club in netting seven goals and registering six assists in league action.

The former England under-21 international has gained interest from Manchester United, who are now said to have made the play maker their number one target this coming summer.

The report, which was shared by TeamTalk but written by the Sunday People’s Steve Bates [via TEAMtalk], was discussed on Sunday Supplement.

“Grealish has been a player on their radar for quite some time, I’m not sure United would be spending anything like £80m on Jack Grealish, but particularly if Villa end up going down, in this current market, I don’t think United would be valuing him at anything like £80m for a player who hasn’t played for England or had sustained exposure in the Premier League,” said Bates.

Bates’ comments were then backed by The Telegraph writer Matt Law, who said: “Villa’s Premier League safety will be key to the Grealish situation.

“If they go down, I think everybody expects them to have to sell him, and not at the money they’d want to.

“But if they stay up, they have incredibly wealthy owners and if they go down, they’d only have to sell Grealish from an FFP standpoint. Their owners are the fourth or fifth wealthiest in the Premier League. There’s no financial pressure on them to sell him, and if they do stay up, do Manchester United have the stomach to spend £80m on Grealish?”

You have to agree with Bates’ and Law’s comments on Grealish. Villa will likely play hardball if they remain in the Premier League and why shouldn’t they, given the midfielder’s excellent performances this season.

Manchester United have a number of transfer targets ahead of the summer transfer window so, if Aston Villa are firm enough, then the Old Trafford club could abandon their pursuit of the 24-year-old and pursue other targets instead.

Do you think Grealish will still be at Aston Villa next season? Let us know in the comments section below…
