Celtic: Could Ajer be Brown’s successor?

Whoever the new manager at Celtic is, they will face a huge rebuilding job in order to take the Hoops back to their former glories.

They will, however, potentially have to do that without players like Odsonne Edouard.

The Frenchman is one of a number of individuals at Parkhead touted with the exit door.

On the chalkboard

Another face who will definitely be heading for the departure lounge is Scott Brown.

The 35-year-old’s time at Paradise is coming to an end this summer as the midfield veteran winds down his career in Glasgow and heads to Aberdeen.

Brown will become a player coach under Steven Glass at Pittodrie but will leave behind a considerable void in the middle of the park.

The Celtic skipper’s performances were mediocre this term but one area of his game that remained unquestionable was his leadership.

Even if now feels like the perfect time for him to depart, the Hoops will miss his tough tackling nature and his commitment to the cause.

The replacement

The natural successor in the middle of the park feels like Ismaila Soro.

The Ivorian has struggled for game time since penning terms in January 2020 but like Brown, his tenacious attitude is infectious.

There are few better tacklers in the entire Celtic squad with Soro registering as many as ten successful challenges in one game against Lille last year.

Liam Shaw could also arrive and fill the spot in midfield but there are other unorthodox options that the incoming Hoops boss has to consider.

One of them needs to be Kristoffer Ajer. The Norwegian could leave for the Premier League this summer but if he stays, he should be well suited to stepping up into midfield.

Ajer came through the ranks as a defensive midfielder and although he’s now been moved into the backline, he could become a genuine star playing further forward. After all, it’s a position he’s played in on 19 occasions throughout his career to date.

The 23-year-old is a marauding figure from centre-half, ploughing forward with an unrelenting amount of energy. He can beat players for fun and push them over in a devastating fashion.

In the words of ACSOM presenter Paul John Dykes, Ajer is a “man mountain” at the back for Celtic but it feels like he’s more than equipped to play further forward.

A commanding figure, his defensive attributes would still be important but it would give Ajer more of a platform to rampage forward and carry the ball; two attributes that define his play style.

The 6 foot 6 pillar would also be allowed to do so knowing he has cover behind him, something that evidently isn’t the case when he plays at centre-back.

With a pass success rate of 87.5%, he’d also be able to keep things ticking over safely. If there’s one area that never fails to let him down, it’s his ball-playing capabilities.

The Norway international might not be as tough in the tackle as Brown but his tall figure would do enough to scare plenty of opponents. He’d be a perfect fit for the midfield.

AND in other news, Celtic must sign “outstanding” 21-goal animal, he terrorised Scott Brown this season…

The West Indies Fight Back!

Even from my perspective, and I do not give kudos easily, Glenn McGrath is quite special

Colin Croft01-Dec-2000Even from my perspective, and I do not give kudos easily, Glenn McGrath is quite special. He certainly knows something about fast bowling. Many spectators at the WACA will not have noticed a few things of engineering and mechanics that were implemented by the lanky fast bowler.Firstly, although the pitch at the Western Australia Cricket Association seemed even and somewhat grassy, McGrath did not try to bowl as quickly as we all know that he can. Instead, he more or less decided that he must allow the batsman to play most of the time. To do that, he had to slow down slightly, not noticeably, but enough to allow his body and arm to reach their elongated peak. The mechanics of fast bowling then came into play. At a slightly slower pace, the ball, on pitching, would ‘grip’ a bit more than usual, even though there was a considerable amount of grass on the pitch. Thus, it was no surprise that McGrath, master that he is, managed to get the ball to ‘dance around’ somewhat. The sequence of McGrath’s hat trick was fast bowling magic, the bowler showing splendid control. The first two wickets also confirmed his boast last week; that he would get both Sherwin Campbell and Brian Lara as his 299th and 300th Test wicket. Do you not love a sportsman who can follow up a boast? That is why Muhammad Ali is my all-time favourite sportsman. The first two deliveries to Campbell were good length off-cutters, Campbell having to play them. The change came in the next delivery, with a bit of a flick of the bowler’s wrist. The ball held its line, but bounced a bit more. Campbell, out of position, fooled by the previous deliveries, sparred at the ball, the edge ending up nicely in the hands of Ricky Ponting at first slip; McGrath’s 299th Test wicket. In came Brian Lara, with great expectations from the crowd, and tremendous responsibilities on his shoulders. McGrath bowled his standard ball to a left-handed batsman. Pitched on leg stump, at good but not great pace, but angled across the batsman. Lara also sparred at the ball, trying to ‘ride the bounce.’ He could not. Stuart MacGill took the edge at fourth slip, suggesting that Lara nearly succeeded in keeping the ball down. Lara was gone, from the first ball that he received, and the West Indies were not only in serious trouble at 19-3 in the ninth over, but McGrath was on a hat trick, and he had taken Lara as his 300th Test wicket. The third wicket was the one that was especially well thought out by the big fast bowler. Instead of bowling at the stumps, or perhaps angling the ball towards the slips, McGrath dug the hat trick delivery in short, but ‘skidding it’, so that it didn’t bounce as much as the batsman expected. Furthermore, McGrath had directed the ball into the ribs of West Indies captain, Jimmy Adams. That was planned, as McGrath explained afterwards. “I expected the ball to bounce a bit more, but the direction was right, straight to the batsman’s body.”All Adams could do was to try to use his bat to turn the ball down to fine leg. The pace of the delivery deceived Adams, and he could only spar the ball to Justin Langer at forward short leg. That was the hat trick, the 10th for an Australian in Test cricket, the 27th overall. As McGrath said afterwards, “The last ball did not go as I would have liked, but I will take it anytime!”It was a wonderful display of controlled fast bowling, and McGrath deserves every credit for it. Anyone who thought that fast bowlers do not have any knowledge of sciences, physics in particular, should think again. I know of at least four international fast bowlers, including McGrath (who did have a helicopter’s license), who are actually pilots! The recovery for the West Indies came from two rather ungainly, but very effective left-handers, Wavell Hinds and Ridley Jacobs. Like Jeff Dujon and Larry Gomes in 1984, both of whom hit centuries in the corresponding Test for the West Indies at the WACA, Hinds and Jacobs fought the West Indies back into the game. Indeed, Wavell Hinds, who opens the batting for Jamaica, but bats at No. 3 for the West Indies, could not have found out his position in the batting order until, just before play started on Day One. Shivnarine Chanderpaul was ruled out with a foot injury, only about 45 minutes before the game started.Hinds effected the plan suggested by former West Indies middle orderbatsman, Seymour Nurse. Simply, hit the ball very positively. He did so.From 22-5, he and the more circumspect Jacobs helped the West Indies to 97 before the next wicket fell. During that partnership, Hinds hit seven boundaries in his 87-ball half-century, playing with such fluidity that many asked why he hadn’t been selected for the first Test. Sometimes disappointments are for the best.Hinds’ only fault was his dismissal. After riding his luck somewhat; he was badly dropped by Ponting at first slip on 16, and again by wicket-keeper Adam Gilchrist when he was 33, the bowler being Brett Lee on both occasions. He was actually caught, from a no-ball, when he was 19.Then Hinds slashed at a wide ball from MacGill, only for Mark Waugh to take a comfortable catch at slip. Hinds had made 50 precious runs, for both himself and for the West Indies. On losing Hinds, Jacobs, who played the innings of the day, then assumed the responsibility and the ascendancy. He played with his normal flamboyance, hitting everything ‘in his half’, but doing it sensibly. He probably would have known that Jeff Dujon made a century here in 1984, when the West Indies were in the hunt, ironically, for the record that Australia are trying to break if they win this game. Jacobs’s 50 came from 92 balls, with six boundaries; bearing witness that he knew his responsibilities. He even managed to cajole Merve Dillon into putting on 55 magnificent runs, through some very hostile bowling from Brett Lee, for the seventh wicket. Dillon contributed 27.That is the commitment that is required at this level. No quarter is asked, none given. Day one of this Test showed that both sides knew what was at stake, and were willing to fight for it. The West Indies have a lot to be thankful for from their later order batsmen, especially Ridley Jacobs and Merve Dillon, while Wavell Hinds, coming back in, took his opportunities well. The fight-back was great to see!

Andersen talks begin as Spurs in pole position

According to a report by Danish news outlet BT, as translated by Sport Witness, Tottenham Hotspur and Ligue 1 giants Lyon are in ‘concrete talks’ over a transfer for Joachim Andersen.

The Lowdown: Spurs and Andersen…

football.london first reported that Andersen was on Tottenham’s radar, with reliable correspondent Alasdair Gold believing he is one of the defensive candidates for this summer.

He is joined by the likes of Nikola Milenkovic and Lewis Dunk, according to that report, but Spurs appear to have been more heavily linked to Andersen since then.

Indeed, the Evening Standard have backed Spurs’ interest in the 25-year-old and believe he is keen to remain in the Premier League.

The Latest: Spurs in pole position as talks begin…

Dropping a big update, BT (via Sport Witness) now believe that Spurs are in ‘driving seat’ for his signature with ‘concrete’ Lyon talks now underway.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/spurs-latest-news/” title=”Spurs latest news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

It is believed that Andersen is ‘almost certain’ to remain in the Premier League and in London, with several English capital sides also interested in a move.

Lyon were hoping to make €30 million (£25.8m) from his sale, but they now believe that figure can be improved upon given all the interest in Andersen coming from the Premier League.

The Verdict: Do it Levy…

Having already proved himself in the English top flight on loan at Fulham over 2020/2021, Andersen would come as a real coup for Spurs.

The 6 foot 3 powerhouse made an impressive 4.8 clearances per 90 in the Premier League last season and won more aerial duels on average than any Fulham player (WhoScored).

It is clear he has displayed real solidity and Tottenham arguably need to bolster their backline before the beginning of 2021/2022.

Lauded as ‘absolutely sensational’ by Craven Cottage legend Tony Gale (fulhamfc.com), Andersen may be a brilliant acquisition.

Ball concerned by Leeds interest in Kent

Rangers must avoid a grave error with Ryan Kent following Michael Ball’s transfer claim about him perhaps being tempted to make a move away from Ibrox.

What’s the talk?

Former Rangers defender Michael Ball has suggested that Ryan Kent could be tempted to quit the club this summer to move to the Premier League with Marcelo Bielsa’s Leeds United.

Ball has claimed that Leeds have shown an interest in Kent and that the pull of the Premier League could entice Kent into a switch down south away from Glasgow.

He told the Transfer Tavern:

“When you have a good year, you want to capitalise and get better terms and Leeds have shown an interest and it’s a huge pull to come back into the Premier League.”

According to the Scottish Sun, Rangers rejected an £11m bid from Leeds in the summer of 2020 and the Premier League club has retained an interest in the winger. The report was published in April of this year, with Leeds said to be considering a £15m offer for Kent this summer.

Back in 2019, Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp hailed the “wonderful” winger after he impressed in a friendly for the Premier League side. He told Liverpool TV, as transcribed by Leeds Live:

“He is a wonderful kid, a wonderful player.”

Grave error

Selling Kent this summer would constitute a grave error for the club. Rangers must avoid cashing in on him now as they could be on the verge of starting something special. The Gers sealed their first top-flight title in a decade this year and now need to build on their success, rather than dismantling their excellent team and rebuilding ahead of next season, which is what would need to happen if Kent left the club.

Rangers should be attempting to add to their squad instead of taking away from it. This could then give them the platform to build a dynasty under Steven Gerrard and begin to dominate Scottish football, as Celtic did with their nine straight titles prior to the 2020/21 campaign. To do this, they will need their best players to build some momentum over several years to show other potential transfer targets that they are the club to join in Scotland.

The £18k-per-week ace, Kent, has proven himself to be one of the club’s top performers over the past few seasons in Scotland. Kent was named in the Scottish Premiership PFA Team of the Year in the 2018/19 and 2020/21 campaigns, establishing himself as one of the elite players in the division.

The 24-year-old scored eight goals and assisted seven others in 33 league appearances in the season just gone, averaging a superb WhoScored rating of 7.40 – a score only James Tavernier could better.

This highlights Kent’s importance to Rangers and why selling him now would be a grave error by the club. His contract expires in 2023, which means that Rangers do not have to worry about him running down his deal and leaving on a free next summer. If Rangers get to 2022 and Kent has not committed to a contract extension, then the time could be right to consider cashing in on him so to avoid losing him for nothing, but letting him leave this summer should not be a consideration.

AND in other news, Gerrard must entice his “very good” friend to Rangers after pundit’s transfer claim…

Koenig smashes century for Gauteng

Sven Koenig smashed 155 as Gauteng enjoyed themselves on another Kimberley belter at the start of this Supersport Series Shield match, declaring shortly before the close on 350 for seven after winning the toss and surprising no one by having a bat

Marcus Prior – MWP02-Feb-2001Sven Koenig smashed 155 as Gauteng enjoyed themselves on another Kimberley belter at the start of this Supersport Series Shield match, declaring shortly before the close on 350 for seven after winning the toss and surprising no one by having a bat against Griqualand West.Koenig’s innings included 24 boundaries, and when he was dismissed thedeclaration soon followed. There is not a great deal to play for in thiscompetition designed to keep players interested after missing out on theSuper Eights, but at least Koenig, Nic Pothas (83) and Zander de Bruyn (66)used the opportunity to boost their first-class averages. In fact, the quality of Koenig’s innings should not be overlooked, particularly as he and Pothas rescued Gauteng from an extremely shaky start,as they were reduced to 33 for three. It may still be hard to get a result here though, as Griqualand West hadreached 50 without loss by the close, only emphasising again that bowlersare going to have to work extremely hard for their wickets.
