Rangers have suffered a possible blow in their quest to sign Joseph Okumu this summer, with Lorient making a bid to sign the defender.

The Lowdown: Rangers keen on signing Okumu

Steven Gerrard is eyeing up reinforcements ahead of next season as the Gers seek to clinch a second successive Premiership crown.

Rangers have been linked with Elfsborg centre-back Okumu, with Old Firm rivals Celtic also tipped to make a move for the 24-year-old.

The Latest: Lorient make the first move

There has been a fresh twist in the saga, however, with L’Equipe claiming [via Daily Record] that Lorient are now the front-runners to sign Okumu, having tabled a €2.5m (£2.1m) bid for him.

Elfsborg are believed to be holding out for closer to €4m (£3.4m), though, as the Kenyan’s future remains up in the air.

The Verdict: Time for Gers to act

This update represents a setback for Rangers, considering that Okumu has been such an impressive performer for the Swedish club, even being compared to Virgil van Dijk – who won three Premiership titles with Celtic – by Elfsborg teammate Johan Larsson.

He has also made seven appearances for Kenya and averaged 1.7 tackles per game at the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations, impressing on the international stage.

Okumu’s age means he is likely to improve further in the coming years, too, so Gerrard would be wise to consider making an offer for him, especially with the defender wanting to test himself in a stronger league and the Gers at risk of being beaten to the punch by the more proactive Lorient.

Pinnington was caught behind, edging the ball to keeper Wade Seccombe.Kasprowicz’s opening partner Adam Dale snared the Tigers’ next wicket, just three overs later, as Seccombe again took an easy catch behind the wicket. The dismissal of Dene Hills (3) left the Tigers teetering at 2/8.Opener Jamie Cox (27) and Shaun Young (52*) set about rebuilding Tasmania’s innings, as Cox guided a Kasprowicz delivery past gully for four.Young survived an appeal for lbw off the next Kasprowicz over, and rubbed salt into the wound by driving the next ball through gully and point to the boundary.Cox and Young continued to find the fence, both beating the mid off fieldsmen in consecutive overs. Young was probably a touch lucky to survive two lbw appeals off Dale’s bowling.The introduction of Ashley Noffke to the bowling attack proved fruitful for the Tigers. The man of the match reserved special punishment for the medium pace of Scott Prestwidge, pulling him twice through square leg for sixes in the same over.With Tasmania needing just six runs to win, rain looked likely to set in. However, Young took delight in again driving Noffke to the boundary, then bringing up his 50, and registering the winning runs by lobbing a shot into vacant space at deep cover point.After a brilliant display with the ball earlier in the day on a helpful pitch, the Tasmanians took full points from the match. What made it even better was that they also recieved a bonus point for reaching their target within 35.1 of the maximum forty-four overs available to them in the rain-reduced contest. The win will not completely remove the sour taste left by the drubbing they received from the Bulls in the Pura Cup match between the sides that concluded two days ago. However, the determination, spirit and unity shown today by the Tigers shows there is still a spark in Tasmanian cricket.

Bangladesh ended the first day of their first Test match against Zimbabwe on 256-9

John Ward19-Apr-2001On a hot sunny day at Queens Sports Club in Bulawayo, Heath Streak of Zimbabwe won the toss and put Bangladesh in to bat on a pitch containing an unusual amount of grass for this venue.However, with Streak himself well below his best form and his three fellow seamers inexperienced, the team wasted their advantage and were undoubtedly relieved to take five wickets in the final session after Bangladesh had reached 194 for four. Bangladesh, for their part, would have settled for a total of 256 for nine at the close.It was a notable first day in Test cricket, though, for all-rounder Andy Blignaut, who took four wickets with the new ball, effected a brilliant run-out and took a slip catch. A pity there was a crowd of only about 100 to appreciate it. For Bangladesh, Aminul Islam nearly followed up his century in Bangladesh’s inaugural Test with another here, being dismissed for 84.Queens normally provides batsmen with the perfect conditions to practise their trade, but this pitch was obviously intended to assist Zimbabwe’s strong pace attack; to what extent remained to be seen. It has been usual for Zimbabwe to play two spinners at this venue, but instead left-armer Raymond Price was made 12th man, giving Zimbabwe four pace bowlers – two of them debutants Blignaut and Brighton Watambwa.In the event, Javed and Mehrab Hussain, the more aggressive of the two, handled good bowling by Streak and Blignaut competently. The bowlers extracted some pace and movement from the pitch, but it was never as venomous as it can be at Harare Sports Club. It was 50 minutes before Mehrab (16) snicked a fast, high catch to third slip, where Mluleki Nkala parried it for the catch to be completed by Guy Whittall at fourth. Bangladesh were 26 for one and Blignaut had taken his first Test wicket.He took another in his next over, as Habibul Bashar (0) slashed at a wide ball, only to hammer a catch straight at Brian Murphy at backward point. Watambwa came on to bowl faster than either of his predecessors, but without success. None of the Zimbabwean pace bowlers was able to put the ball in the right spot consistently enough to pressurise the batsmen, and Streak in his later spells was unimpressive and occasionally awful.After lunch Javed slashed Streak and Blignaut in turn just past the heads of statuesque slips to the boundary before another slash backward of point for four brought him his fifty. Zimbabwe kept an attacking field but too many loose deliveries thwarted their plans. The 84-run partnership came to an end when leg-spinner Murphy came on for the first time and had Javed adjudged caught bat-pad by debutant Dion Ebrahim for 62 with his second ball.Aminul and Akram Khan appeared to be settling in for another good partnership when a brilliant turn and throw from Blignaut at third man ran out the latter for 21, and Bangladesh were 149 for four just before tea.Naimur Rahman (22) was another batsman to get a start but fail to build on it, Blignaut taking a catch at second slip to give Watambwa his first Test wicket. Aminul had by now passed his fifty and gave rise to hopes that he might become the first batsman in history to score centuries in both of his country’s first two Test matches. However, he showed signs of lapses in concentration and finally fell for 84, driving at Blignaut armed with the second new ball and snicking a catch to the keeper.Khaled Masud (30) batted positively against the second new ball before finally giving Streak his wicket, edging a catch to the wicket-keeper. Streak followed up by trapping Hasibul Hossain (1) lbw in his next over, and then catching Mushfiqur Rahman (4) off the bowling of Blignaut to end the day.

A major update has emerged on £1.9k-p/w ace Matt Crooks, it could lead to Ipswich CEO Mark Ashton facing a disaster in the transfer window.

What’s the talk?

According to the East Anglian Daily Times, Championship side Derby County are seriously interested in a swoop for Rotherham attacking midfielder Matt Crooks this summer. Wayne Rooney has identified Crooks as a target as he looks to rebuild his Derby squad and as such, he could sanction a bid for the Englishman soon.

The report claims that Ipswich are also looking at Crooks as a potential target. Ipswich are attempting to build a squad capable of securing promotion from League One and Paul Cook believes that Crooks could improve his current team.

Earlier this year, Crooks won the Championship Player of the Month award and pundit Don Goodman claimed that he was “flourishing” at a higher level. He told the Rotherham Advertiser:

“Crooks might not be the most well-known player in the Championship but there’s simply no doubting his effectiveness. Having made his way from the lower leagues, he is now flourishing at a higher level.

“There are fewer better sights in football than an attacking midfielder charging through on his way to scoring. Crooks made a habit of this in January.”

Fans will be gutted

Ipswich CEO Mark Ashton could be facing a disaster with this update. Derby joining the race for Crooks could be a massive blow to the Blues by dampening their chances of being able to land the forward.

This news should be gutting to Ipswich fans, as they could be about to miss out on a talented player who could be an excellent addition to their squad. Ashton would then need to scour the market in search of alternative targets, which could slow down their recruitment process.

Derby are in the Championship and this means that they can offer Crooks an immediate return to the second tier. Ipswich, meanwhile, can only offer him League One football and the prospect of a promotion push. Derby also have Rooney in charge and that could be a draw for English players due to his legendary status in this country, being the top-scorer in the national team’s history. This means that Derby could be a more attractive proposition for Crooks, which is why this news could leave Ashton facing disaster as he looks to secure such a good player.

The £1.9k-per-week ace produced seven goals and three assists in all competitions for a struggling Rotherham side in the season just gone. Crooks averaged a solid WhoScored rating of 6.75 in 12 starts as an attacking midfielder as Rotherham were relegated from the Championship, which shows that he is a solid performer at that level and that he could have been influential at a step down in League One. Therefore, Ipswich fans will be gutted if they miss out on him due to Derby’s interest.

Apesar da recusa de Didier Drogba em defender o Corinthians nesta temporada, o clube brasileiro planeja participar de outras ações com o atacante marfinense nos próximos meses. A ideia do clube é fazer uma parceria além do futebol com a Fundação Drogba, que presta assistência no que diz respeito à saúde, educação e infância na Costa do Marfim, em projetos no Brasil.

Após divulgar uma nota oficial agradecendo ao atacante, que depois também se disse honrado pela proposta do Corinthians, o presidente do Timão, Roberto de Andrade, comentou nesta quarta-feira como foram as tratativas com Drogba.

– Na realidade, as pessoas comentaram sem conhecimento, se falou muito que não sei quem estava em Londres, e então vão replicando coisas que não espelham a verdade. Depois o torcedor pensa que o Corinthians falhou, enfim… Mas tivemos alguns contatos com ele, eu falei com ele três vezes, nós agradecemos pela recepção com convite, tratamos de outras coisas também. Ele tem uma fundação na África, a gente vai fazer alguns projetos com ele aqui no Brasil, são outras coisas além do futebol – afirmou Roberto de Andrade, em entrevista ao canal Esporte Interativo, e que ainda completou.

– Eu ouvi que ele ficou muito satisfeito com o convite. Quando conversei há duas semanas, ele ficou de analisar e pensar, falamos depois na semana passada já com os números que eu tinha passado, e ele ia consultar a família porque tinha outros projetos. Ontem (terça-feira) ele disse que não viria e conversamos sobre esse negócio da fundação. A gente vai fazer alguns projetos que ele já toca aqui no Brasil – acrescentou.

A negociação entre Corinthians e Drogba durou cerca de 20 dias, mas a resposta final do marfinense foi não. O Timão contratou sete jogadores para a temporada e está próximo de fechar com Jadson.
