Belly-flops and daft decisions

Will Luke provides the Plays of the Day from the second ODI between England and New Zealand at Edgbaston

Daft decision of the day
Play didn’t begin until 3pm, reducing the match to 24 overs. Withheavy rain forecast at 6pm, it would seem only sensible to reduce theinterval between innings as much as possible, in order to give thehardy Edgbaston crowd the chance of seeing a full match. Instead, theytook 30 minutes while the rain petered down, and the race against theweather continued.Shots of the day
It was only a reduced game, but Luke Wright took full advantage toprove his worth which, in six ODIs prior today, had yielded only onefifty. He looked out of sorts at Chester-le-Street, yet today appearedto resemble the fearless striker members of Hove have enjoyed for thepast two seasons. His target? Michael Mason. The first rocketed overcover, going inside out, which was followed by the cleanest of sixesover the top. He saved the best for last, however, with a slog-sweepover midwicket so emphatic as to make Steve Waugh, the shot’s pioneer, greenwith envy. Now, England just need Ian Bell and Wright to fire in thesame innings and they might have found a useful, potentiallydestructive, opening partnership.Unwise marketing of the day
Britons are renowned boozers, and never more so than at the cricket. And while international grounds have, for the most part, banned peoplefrom bringing in their own, one Australian wine company exploitedBritain’s thirst with unlimited quantities available to all, albeit ina tea-cup sized plastic container. With each rain break, the crowdscame eargerly flocking for a top-up, but such was their increasingstupor that they remained beside the bar, ready for another. A trafficisland of sozzled fans, none of whom were capable of remembering whatthey had enjoyed, blocked the entrance to the hospitality suites, prompting a naïve policeman to call for order. He failed.Belly-flop of the day
Dimitri Mascarenhas is many things, but any aspirations he had ofemulating Paul Collingwood’s salmon-leaping catches came tumbling downto earth today. With a bump. Stationed expectantly at short fine-leg,Brendon McCullum flicked one aerially just to his left. He sprangforward, almost getting both feet off the ground, before collapsingflat on his stomach rather indignantly. It was a moment to make allaspiring league cricketers proud.

Phil Hay delivers Leeds transfer news on Noa Lang

The Athletic’s Phil Hay has delivered an update on Leeds United’s pursuit of Club Brugge starlet Noa Lang in this summer transfer window.

What’s the story?

According to recent reports from The Telegraph, Marcelo Bielsa’s side have been been watching the 21-year-old, although they are set to face intense competition to try and land him.

And now, writing on Twitter, Hay said: “They like Lang and that’s a genuine link but they haven’t actually made a concrete move for him.”

The journalist did however leave the door open to a potential move for a new winger later on in the transfer window though, by adding: “Hard to say. It’s been floated all summer but was always a case of doing it if the right option came up at the right price.”

Bielsa would love him

Able to play anywhere across the frontline, Lang has shown he has a real eye for goal in his loan spell at Brugge last season, bagging 17 goals and providing a further 11 assists in just 37 games, including netting in the Champions League.

With the volume of goals and assists that Lang delivered last season, and with him still being very much in the infancy of his career, a move for the youngster would surely be the kind of exciting one that has Bielsa buzzing.

Called a “phenomenon” by Belgian journalist Peter Vandenbempt, the winger made history when he became the first player in 60 years to mark his debut with a hat-trick for Ajax, while his teammate at Brugge, Cyriel Dessers, has insisted that Lang is ready to shine in English football, even backing Leeds’ interest in him.

He said: “He is absolutely ready for the Premier League. He was fantastic last season. Then it is logical that there is a next step.  I would love to see him in the Champions League with Club Brugge, but he has shown that he is one of the best footballers in Belgium.

“He is a graceful footballer, but he also works very hard. I often sat on the bench, so I could keep an eye on him there. But the way he works, I didn’t know he had that in him. He has really taken a step. The interest does not come out of nowhere. I know how Leeds work.”

Victor Orta should be pulling out the chequebook and making a move for the £19.8m-rated Lang before the close of the transfer window this summer.

With his versatility, end product and willingness to work hard too, Lang fits the Bielsa bill to an absolute tee, and the Leeds boss would surely love to have him at Elland Road.

Meanwhile, Phil Hay reveals Leeds United’s summer transfer plans…

Boards yet to reach a compromise

Sri Lanka Cricket is still in discussions with the ECB about the status of their tour to England next year

Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) is still in discussions with the ECB about the status of their tour to England next year, according to Graeme Labrooy, the Sri Lanka Cricketers’ Association (SLCA) secretary.SLC had earlier said that they would revert to the players’ body by Wednesday on the tour, which clashes with next year’s Indian Premier League, but Labrooy said that “with informal discussions still going on between SLC and the England and Wales Cricket Board, we now expect to be updated by the weekend”.”I have been informed by SLC that discussions are still going on, and some clarity may come through by the weekend,” Labrooy told Cricinfo. “I believe the discussions basically revolve around how best the tour can go forward, whether the tour schedule can be reworked or whether the IPL franchises can release some players for the tour and so on. But we are not pushing SLC because the tour is still a year away and the players are right now focussed on the India series starting on July 23.”It’s believed the SLC interim committee, headed by Arjuna Ranatunga, is scheduled to meet soon to discuss the issue.Sri Lanka’s proposed tour to England clashes with the IPL, for which 13 top Sri Lankan cricketers, include Mahela Jayawardene, their captain, Kumar Sangakkara, the vice-captain, and Muttiah Muralitharan, have signed three-year contracts. On July 8, the ECB announced the dates for Sri Lanka’s visit, which starts with a warm-up game against Leicestershire on April 21, and ends with the third and final ODI against England on May 30. But two days later, following an intervention from the country’s president on behalf of the players, Mendis announced the Sri Lankan players would be allowed to appear for the IPL and that a compromise would worked out with the ECB.The tour was firmed up during the recent ICC conference in Dubai, where Ranatunga agreed to the ECB’s request to fill in the slot vacated by Zimbabwe for the 2009 season.

Corinthians aprimora defesa e tem escalação confirmada para decisão

MatériaMais Notícias

Cássio; Fagner, Balbuena, Pablo e Guilherme Arana; Paulo Roberto; Jadson, Maycon, Camacho e Romero; Jô.

Super Smith, a double bluff and a mix-up

Andrew Miller presents the plays of the fourth day of the third Test at Edgbaston

Innings of the day
At Lord’s in the first Test, Graeme Smith reprised his double-century in 2003 with a second-innings century that guided his side to safety. Here at Edgbaston, he exceeded that feat with the performance of his life. While his team-mates stumbled around him, Smith summoned the indomitable spirit that cemented his legend five years ago, and dragged his bruised team to an incredible victory. On a day when Monty Panesar was spitting out of the left-hander’s rough, he played the spinner with supreme judgment and technique, assessing length in an instant and picking off his runs almost exclusively on the leg side. He was untroubled by the sightscreen issues that dogged the right-handers, and by the fading light as well, as he produced the finest second-innings century in England since Graham Gooch beat the West Indians in 1991.Sidekick of the day
Mark Boucher’s career has been building towards a day like this. No-one in the South African side has a better understanding of sporting heartbreak than he, and there’s no-one whom Smith would have rather had alongside him when the weariness threatened to set in and the requirement began to dip. Boucher is a battler, and he’s got the scars to prove it. Arguably his dropped catch off Allan Donald at Trent Bridge in 1998 turned the tide of that series, and he had a starring role in their 2003 World Cup elimination as well. But in his 117th Test, he summoned every memory – good, bad and downright ugly – and ensured that, at the third attempt, he nailed the series win that, second only to victory in Australia, is the greatest goal of his career.Wicket of the day
The one moment that really rocked South Africa’s resolve came when Jacques Kallis was pinned lbw by Flintoff. Having at one stage been comfortably placed at 65 for 0, his departure left them floundering on 83 for 3, and with acrimony filling the air. Kallis was absolutely spitting as he left the crease. On Thursday evening he had expressed his wish that “common sense” would prevail, and that the troublesome sightscreen that contributed to his first-innings downfall would be extended to help him pick Flintoff’s full-length deliveries. Nothing of the sort happened, and when Flintoff flung down a thigh-high full-toss, Kallis didn’t come close to picking it. He possibly expected it to be called no-ball, but there was absolutely no question about the height. It tailed back into the crouching batsman, and would have hit middle two-thirds up.Double-bluff of the day
He arrived with his usual fanfare, but after 20 slightly underwhelming deliveries, Flintoff consulted with his captain, and arranged for a few subtle changes in the field. A short midwicket was posted, as well as a man back for the hook, which could mean only one thing – it was time for a bouncer barrage. In fact, Flintoff’s next delivery was quite the opposite end of the length scale. Out came the dreaded yorker that had caused such havoc in the first innings, and – although the weather was considerably brighter than it had been on Thursday evening – the effect was exactly the same. Neil McKenzie completely lost sight of it, and could only flinch in anticipation of impact as the ball scudded into his toe, just outside the line of off stump. Some might argue that McKenzie’s evasive action equated to playing a shot, hence he should have been given not out, but Steve Davis had no doubts as the finger was raised.Celebration of the day
As the afternoon wore on, Panesar began to extract more and more from the surface, and his excitement grew exponentially. Leaps and yelps and premature high-fives abounded, not least when Ashwell Prince emerged for a torrid examination out of the left-hander’s rough. In a single over, Panesar stuck up his own finger as if to give an lbw decision that had already been turned down, then hurtled off into the arms of the wicketkeeper to celebrate a caught-behind that was incorrectly refused by Aleem Dar. Dar rightly had a quiet word with Panesar at that point, but before his words could sink in, Prince was gone, caught behind off James Anderson at the other end of the pitch. Panesar’s reaction was somewhat akin to a gazelle stalking a lion – with big, bounding skips, he tracked down his celebrating colleague, leapt gleefully onto his back, and brought him tumbling to the turf.Non-appeal of the day
And yet, incredibly, for all his histrionics, Panesar went AWOL for the one appeal that might have made the difference. On 85, and with the Barmy Army in full voice, Smith propped forward to defend a big ripper that flicked off the finger of his right glove, and looped tamely into the hands of Tim Ambrose jogging round from behind the stumps. England’s fielders, to a man, were indifferent as they asked politely for the decision, though most of them were behind the bat so were in no position to tell. Panesar chose to keep his council as well, and in the face of such apathy, Dar had an easy decision to make.Mix-up of the day
Other than that gloved chance, and a vast legbreaking lbw appeal that would have required a brave decision, Smith’s performance was chanceless. But he could still have been dismissed on 79 after a rash call for a leg-bye from his partner, AB de Villiers. Smith responded, against his better judgement, as Tim Ambrose shed his right glove and hurtled round to field. A fierce shy came in on the bounce, but Ian Bell couldn’t gather, and the moment – and the match – was lost.Moment of the day
The final, brutal blow through midwicket that sealed South Africa’s first series win in England since 1965. He was made to wait for the moment, as Kevin Pietersen tweaked his offbreaks into the rough, and he even edged the penultimate ball down into the crease. But then, Pietersen served up a half-tracker, Smith swung lustily across the line, and raised his arms in instant triumph, as the dressing-room poured out to the middle in acclaim.

Spurs fans erupt over Bernardo claim

Flocking to Twitter, many Tottenham Hotspur supporters have erupted over news involving Manchester City star Bernardo Silva.

As reports surrounding Harry Kane’s future in north London grow and more intense toward the latter stages of this summer transfer window, it is believed the offer of a swap deal shouldn’t be entirely ruled out.

City could offer players plus a sizeable transfer fee in exchange for the 28-year-old (Fabrizio Romano), with Bernardo in particular having been one of the names mentioned in recent weeks (The Daily Mail).

Bringing an update on the Portuguese attacker’s links to Spurs in a potential swap for Kane, journalist Duncan Castles has provided supporters with some encouraging news.
