Andre Nel, the South African fast bowler, has said that a desire to play a bigger role in mentoring junior players caused him to switch from the Titans to the Lions. The Lions kick off their campaign in Johannesburg with a game against the Warriors which starts on Thursday.

AS Roma have been linked with a late summer swoop for Aston Villa midfielder Douglas Luiz.

The Lowdown: Luiz’s summer

Luiz has had a busy summer both on and off the pitch since the end of last season.

The holding midfielder, hailed as ‘fantastic’ by Gregg Evans, was linked with a return to Manchester City at the beginning of the window. City had a buyback clause of £27.5m for the 23-year-old, however, that expired in June and as we know, Luiz remained at Villa Park.

He then represented Brazil at the Olympic Games in Tokyo and won gold with his country, playing the entirety of the final against Spain.

Roma were also trying to sign Luiz earlier in the summer, and it now seems as if Jose Mourinho and co could be back in for the south American with days remaining in the window.

The Latest: Roma links resurface

According to Il Messaggero, cited by Sports Witness, Roma are keen on Luiz.

The report states that a move would cost around €30m (£25.6m) and has been described as a ‘difficult’ one to complete, but it seems as if former Tottenham manager Mourinho, 58, is once again interested in Luiz.

The Verdict: Keep

Villa are yet to add to their central midfield ranks this term, so keeping hold of Luiz should be a priority during the final days of the window.

A number of central midfielders have been linked with a move to the Midlands, most recently Abdou Harroui, so should Villa sell Luiz, they may need more than one midfield arrival before the end of the month.

A reported £25.6m price tag also seems low, especially with the player having two years left on his deal and a £31.5m Transfermarkt valuation.

At the time Justice Ahmed Ebrahim said that Odumbe was “dishonest and devious in his behaviour in relation to the game of cricket” and that he had exhibited no remorse. “He has not been found guilty of ‘match-fixing’ but, as I have indicated, his conduct was outrageously reprehensible,” Ebrahim concluded. “In my view, a five-year ban would meet the justice of the case.” Odumbe has attempted to have the ban overturned without success.Speaking to the Nation, Odumbe said he harboured ambitions to play in one more World Cup. “I have no doubts in my mind that Kenya will be in the World Cup,” he said. “I am keeping physically fit in preparation for my rejoining the team once this ban is over.”Locals sources doubted that Odumbe, who will be 40 when his ban ends in July 2009, has much real chance of regaining his place in the side. Newcastle United have now made an offer for Valencia defender Mouctar Diakhaby as the Magpies look to do some business on transfer deadline day.

What’s the story?

Steve Bruce’s side have endured a difficult start to the Premier League season, remaining winless from their opening three games and currently lying in the bottom three with only Norwich and Arsenal behind them.

However, it appears the Magpies could be set to reinforce the centre of their defence, with Spanish publication Super Deporte claiming that they have indeed made an offer for Diakhaby.

The report adds that it remains to be seen whether Valencia will be open to accepting it, but with the deadline looming, the future of the France under-21 international remains unclear.

Fans will be buzzing

The £9m-rated Diakhaby has built up considerable experience playing top-level football with both Valencia and former club Lyon and has also played in the Champions League.

Standing at an imposing 6 foot 4, the 24-year-old is a powerful centre-half who not only can read the game well, but also have the passing ability to play out from the back and not just hoof it into row Z.

As per WhoScored, he has a career average of 1.2 interceptions per game, which is better than any Newcastle centre-back this season; while he also boasts an impressive pass accuracy of 85.9%, which would put him near the top of the Magpies’ squad for that metric.

Given his natural height and aerial presence, it’s not that surprising that he’s actually scored ten goals in 147 games from centre-back, including a notable one in the Europa League semi-final against Arsenal a couple of years ago at the Emirates Stadium.

Diakhaby would arrive at St James’ Park as someone with real physicality and power, and that should bode well for the rigours of Premier League football.

Reports that the Magpies have now made an offer for the Frenchman are sure to have left fans buzzing as Newcastle finally look to try and do some more business in this summer transfer window.

The Lowdown: Frustrating window

The St. James’ Park faithful only managed to bring in one player of note on a permanent deal in Joe Willock from Arsenal.

Given that he was already on loan there last season, the squad has not really improved in what turned out to be a frustrating window in the North East.

The Latest: Players offered

Writing in his latest piece for The Daily Telegraph, Luke Edwards has said that the Tyneside club were offered seven players on loan throughout the window: Hamza Choudhury, Axel Tuanzebe, Ainsley Maitland-Niles, Hector Bellerin, Harry Winks, Mason Holgate and Boubacar Kamara.

However, all of them requited a loan fee to be paid, which the Magpies hierarchy insisted that they could not afford.

The Verdict: Shame

To get even just a couple of those players in on loan deals would have made the window a much better one for Steve Bruce’s team, and instead, the former Aston Villa and Sunderland manager now has to work with a very similar squad to last season.

Described as a ‘phenomenal’ player by pundit Paul Robinson back in February after an impressive performance against Burnley while on loan at West Brom, Maitland-Niles made his feelings known late on in the window about potentially wanting to leave (The Guardian), and one cannot help that a deal could have been struck with the Gunners having already brought in Willock.

Tuanzebe and Bellerin have both moved on to Aston Villa and Real Betis respectively, but the Toon should really be looking at revisiting moves for the other five players when January comes around.
