PIA, NBP and Abbottabad seal wins

A round-up of the third day’s play of the first-round matches of the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy

Cricinfo staff30-Dec-2008Group AMohammad Talha took 5 for 37, and Mohammad Aamer and Wahaz Riaz scalped two each, as National Bank of Pakistan secured a 171-run win over Habib Bank Limited in Karachi. Chasing 260, HBL had been reduced to 10 for 3 by stumps on the second day, and the remaining batsmen could only score a further 78 on Tuesday. Khaqan Arsal made 34 of those as last year’s finalists began their season on a low note.Pakistan International Airlines completed an innings-and-193-run rout of Karachi Whites on the third day at the National Stadium. Karachi, resuming on 73 for 3 in their second innings, folded for 161. Anwar Ali, the PIA medium-pacer, was once again the wrecker-in-chief, taking 5 for 43 to complete his second ten-wicket match haul in first-class games. An unbeaten 32 from Kashif Daud helped Zarai Taraqiati Bank Limited gain a six-run first-innings lead over Khan Research Laboratories in Rawalpindi. ZTBL, who began the day at 191 for 7, managed to reach 255. KRL, though, have a chance of trying to force a result on the fourth day after scoring 210 for 3 in their second innings by stumps. A high run-rate of 4.17 was achieved thanks to Saeed Anwar jnr’s 102 off 128 balls. He put on 181 for the second wicket with Azhar Ali (81), but ZTBL captain Iftikhar Anjum came back to remove the two set batsmen after having bagged an early wicket.Pakistan Customs suffered a collapse on the third day at the Quaid-e-Azam Park in Karachi, in the process conceding a 44-run first-innings lead to Sui Southern Gas Corporation. Qasim Sheikh, the Scotland batsman, scored his maiden first-class century, but SSGC’s bowlers hit back. From 181 for 1, Pakistan Customs crumbled to 302 all out. No other batsman besides Sheikh went past 40. For SSGC, Mohammad Kashif took four wickets, while off-break bowler Haaris Ayaz bagged three, including that of Sheikh’s. SSGC’s openers negotiated two overs in their second innings before stumps. After no play on the first day, and 33 overs on the second, only six overs were bowled on Tuesday in the match between Water and Power Development Authority and defending champions Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Limited in Sheikhupura. SNGPL, resuming on 66 for 3, lost a wicket for the addition of six runs.Group BRawalpindi conceded the first-innings lead to Islamabad at the Diamond Club Ground, but came back strongly to dismiss the hosts for 124. They now need only 11 runs on the final day, with four wickets remaining, to seal victory. Rawalpindi added 20 to their overnight 211 for 8, but still fell 14 short of Islamabad’s first-innings total. Their bowlers, though, quickly reduced the hosts to 70 for 7, and it was only a 40 from No. 8 Fakhar Hussain that helped Islamabad past 100. Haseeb Azam took 6 for 64, while Rashid Latif snared three as Rawalpindi used only three bowlers. Rawalpindi crumbled to 31 for 5 chasing 139, but opener Hammad Azam (58 not out) and Yasim Murtaza (34) revived the innings with a 73-run stand.Half-centuries from Sajjad Ahmed and Mohammad Rizwan failed to stave off defeat for Peshawar against Abbottabad at the Arbab Niaz Stadium. Peshawar, with five second-innings wicket gone, began the day trailing by 99. Sajjad (84) and Rizwan (60) gave them hope with their 135-run stand – 59 of which came on the second day – but still Peshwar could only manage 247 in their second innings, setting Abbottabad a target of 22. Rashid Mansoor took five wickets, with fellow spinner Noor-ul-Amin grabbing three. Abbottabad lost one wicket during their chase, which was completed in 4.3 overs.Karachi Blues will also look to wrap up a win on the final day against Quetta in Karachi. Quetta, though, put up a much better performance after they were shot out for 129 in their first innings on Monday. Resuming their second innings at 51 for 1 – they were made to follow on – Quetta progressed to 249 for 8 in the 73 overs bowled on Tuesday. Quetta captain Nasim Khan top scored with 62, but with a lead of only 89, Karachi would look to take the remaining two wickets and chase down an easy target.Only 60-odd overs were possible at the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore, where a draw seems likely between Lahore Ravi and Faisalabad. Resuming their first innings at 260 for 6, Lahore Ravi pushed to 327, with the overnight pair of Junaid Zia and Ali Raza both scoring 40s. Opener Imran Ali made an unbeaten half-century, but Faisalabad lost two wickets while scoring 96 in their 36 overs before stumps.Proceedings finally got underway at the Multan Cricket Stadium, where Multan made 170 for 5 in 55 overs against Hyderabad. Left-arm spinner Pir Zulfiqar picked up three wickets for the visitors.

– Eu quero ganhar o Campeonato Pernambucano.

Celtic: Liel Abada flops on his return

After an injury-ravaged Celtic side scored three times in Seville in the Europa League only a few days ago, it was exciting to see what a fitter Hoops squad could achieve.

They were fabulous from an offensive point of view last Thursday but were missing the likes of Kyogo Furuhashi due to injury and Liel Abada because of religious reasons.

The thought of Abada returning to the team on Sunday alongside Jota was a mouth-watering one. Both have been electrifying since signing for the Glaswegian outfit in the summer, but sadly they couldn’t get going against lowly Livingston this weekend.

The hosts came into the game with just a solitary point to their name but once the full-time whistle was blown, they’d added a tally of three points to their collection as they recorded a famous 1-0 victory.

It was a sluggish performance from Ange Postecoglou’s team, who had somewhat of a European hangover.

They weren’t quick in transition and struggled to create regular opportunities for Albian Ajeti, but it was two players who didn’t even play in midweek who were most disappointing.

Stephen Welsh was beaten to the ball all too easily by Andrew Shinnie for the game’s only goal as he got across the young defender and then rifled home a powerful shot.

Celtic’s defensive problems appear to be mounting but what was most concerning today was the attacking play.

Abada was back in the side but delivered a poor performance compared to the high standards he has set since being signed.

In ten matches prior to their encounter with Livi, he had contributed to eight goals. Unfortunately, there was no similar impact on Sunday.

Livingston set up with a low block and the Israeli attacker found life difficult in breaking it down.

So often full of swagger and pizzazz, the winger was a shadow of the player we’ve seen this season, completing just one of his four dribbles and registering two key passes.

Only one of his eight attempted crosses were successful, which led to a dismal pass success rate of 70%. That happened to be the worst of any Celtic player this weekend as he surrendered possession on 18 occasions.

The 19-year-old was incredibly feeble in physical situations too, as he was bulldozed at times by the Livi defence. He finished the game having won just 12.5% of his defensive duels in a shoddy display at Almondvale.

Abada appears to be better when he has the freedom and space to run in behind but that simply never emerged on Sunday.

Dirk Nannes, the Victoria left-arm fast bowler, has been signed up by the IPL’s Delhi Daredevils. Nannes joins the team on the recommendation of Greg Shipperd, who coaches both the Victoria and Delhi sides, and is the third Australian to be signed by the team ahead of the tournament’s second edition, after the Victoria allrounder Andrew McDonald and the New South Wales batsman David Warner.Nannes was part of the Victoria and Middlesex teams that won the domestic Twenty20 competitions in Australia and England last year. “He meets our needs of a quick, quick bowler,” a Delhi spokesperson told Cricinfo. Delhi signed Nannes on January 23, a day before the Twenty20 Big Bash final last week, which Victoria lost to New South Wales by five wickets. He managed only a solitary wicket in the final, but was the third-highest wicket-taker with 12 victims at an average of 13.83 and economy-rate of 6.38. In 2007-08 he helped Victoria to their third successive Twenty20 title with figures of 4 for 23 against Western Australia in the final and finished as the top bowler in the tournament with 12 wickets. He was not as impressive in the subsequent Twenty20 Cup in England, with 14 wickets in nine games at an average of 17.57 and economy-rate of 7.47.By getting Nannes, Delhi have managed to cover for the absence of Mohammad Asif, who quit the IPL for personal reasons, and now also have an express fast bowler in their ranks to join the likes of Glenn McGrath, Farveez Maharoof, Brett Geeves and Ashish Nehra. In addition to consistently peaking 140kph-plus speeds, Nannes gets the ball to swing late, making him a dangerous prospect.

Somos a verdadeira torcida do Grêmio!”.

A maioria estava me vaiando, pegando no meu pé, e todo sabe o motivo.

Rangers: Barisic’s price has soared

Rangers ended their local rival’s period of dominance in Scottish football as they won the Premiership title last season, preventing their arch-rivals from completing the coveted 10-in-a-row.

Steven Gerrard, who joined the club as managed in 2018, was able to construct a side capable of going unbeaten throughout the entire campaign, winning the title in style as they picked up 102 points.

In order to do this, Gerrard needed players who he could trust to put in excellent performances week-in-week-out in the Premiership and one man he trusted explicitly was left-back Borna Barisic.

He started 30 of Rangers’ 38 Premiership matches in defence and was a brick wall at left-back, whilst also offering an attacking edge on the ball. Barisic averaged a sublime WhoScored rating of 7.35 in the top-flight, as he provided 2.2 key passes per game – ending the campaign on one goal and five assists.

This shows that he made a huge contribution to Rangers’ title success, as he was consistently impressive throughout the season and made a difference with his delivery in the final third.

Former Gers player Alex Rae lauded the defender for having ‘terrific quality’ with the ball at his feet. He said:

“He performs at good level week-in, week-out and has terrific quality in the final third of the park.”

Mark Wilson added: “He’s the best left-back in country. He’s improved his defending and supplies assists and is a threat at set pieces.”

The defender arrived at Ibrox in 2018 from Croatian outfit Osijek, having started his career at Dinamo Zagreb. Transfermarkt valued him at £1.8m at the time, with Barisic venturing out of his homeland of Croatia for the first time.

Barisic’s impressive form for Rangers, as aforementioned, has seen his value soar since arriving at the club. Transfermarkt now value the brilliant defender at £5.4m, which is a 200% increase from his initial valuation after leaving Croatia. His valuation has soared over the last couple of seasons and that is a credit to him and the coaching staff at Ibrox.

It shows how much he has been able to thrive under Gerrard’s management, showcasing his brilliance in the Premiership and in the Europa League.

Last season, he averaged an excellent WhoScored rating of 6.97 in Europe as he registered three goals and three assists in 10 appearances from left-back, yet again highlighting the ability he has on the ball to create from defence.

Martin Love left a memorable display in his farewell to the Gabba as his 118 not out was responsible for handing Queensland a 97-run advantage over New South Wales. Love, the state’s leading run-scorer, will retire at the end of the season and his 30th century drove the Bulls to the confident position of 5 for 366.The innings was crucial in gaining two points that moved the Bulls to 24, equal with the second-placed Tasmania, who are struggling in Hobart. Both teams are jostling to face Victoria in the final on March 13. Love, the No. 3, held the order together after the hosts were 3 for 81 and shared vital stands with Andrew Symonds, James Hopes and Chris Hartley, who raised half-centuries.Love stayed for 219 balls and struck 15 fours while his partners operated at a quicker rate. Symonds slammed 52 from 45 deliveries, with 10 boundaries, to provide a timely surge to the innings and show he was still capable of producing an important performance. When Symonds, who is playing his 100th first-class game for Queensland, left after hooking at Grant Lambert (2 for 92) he had scored all but eight runs of his partnership with Love.Hopes followed his 4 for 80 with 55 to settle any fears of a collapse and Hartley continued his strong finish to the summer. After taking six catches, Hartley moved to 82 not out and on the third morning will aim for consecutive centuries.Queensland suffered their first loss with Ryan Broad edging behind on 0 while Shane Watson, who is returning from back stress fractures as a specialist batsman, also failed to score. The opener Nick Kruger (44) played on to Greg Mail before Love settled the situation.Usman Khawaja added three to his overnight 109 and was last man out as the Blues reached 269. Ben Cutting picked up the final wicket to have 3 for 51.
