Everton: Luis Diaz not for sale in January

Reported Everton transfer target Luis Diaz won’t be sold by FC Porto in January, according to Portuguese newspaper Record (via Sport Witness).

The lowdown

Everton tried to sign him in the summer as part of a deal which would have seen James Rodriguez go the other way, but the latter’s salary proved to be a stumbling block (via Carlos Aleman).

The 24-year-old has started the 2021/22 season in electric fashion, scoring nine goals in 11 league outings and also bagging twice in the Champions League (via WhoScored). He has also been averaging 2.5 dribbles and 1.5 key passes per 90 minutes in the Portuguese top flight.

His Porto team-mate Sergio Oliveira has described Diaz’s technical ability as ‘extraordinary’.

The latest

Journalist Henrique Pinto wrote that Porto fear the consequences of letting Diaz go in mid-season, adding that the €25m (£21.3m) bids which apparently came their way last summer are expected to increase in light of his form.

Intriguingly, Pinto suggested that Porto could be open to agreeing a deal in advance of the summer transfer window. For instance, back in March 2019, Real Madrid agreed a £43.5m move for Eder Militao, waiting until July before he officially became their player.

The verdict

Diaz’s form has surely caught Everton’s attention, but the question is whether they can afford him. If he keeps up his current scoring rate, it wouldn’t be hard to imagine the 2020 valuation doubling by next summer.

Provided that such a fee is affordable for the Blues, then a swoop in the early months of 2022 might be the smart move, enabling them to get the jump on any competitors. Based on what Diaz has shown in recent months, clubs surely will be queuing up for his services, so Everton ought to take note of Pinto’s suggestion about striking a pre-agreement.

West Ham want Hlozek on loan in January

West Ham United are set to reignite their interest in Sparta Prague gem Adam Hlozek this January…

What’s the word?

That’s according to 90min journalist Toby Cudworth, who delivered a fresh update on the situation to social media this week.

“#WHUFC want to sign Adam Hlozek in January and also a centre-back to cover the injured Ogbonna,” he tweeted.

“Hlozek could be an initial loan with conditions to make an obligatory purchase, similar to Soucek’s 2020 deal. Kretinsky could be key.”

In an accompanying article, it’s claimed that the Irons are preparing a loan-to-buy agreement to sign the 19-year-old forward in the winter transfer window, which will be a similar type of deal used to sign Tomas Soucek in 2020.

The Hammers now have Sparta Prague co-owner Daniel Kretinsky on their board following his investment this month, so that is expected to stand them in good stead when negotiating a deal both clubs will be happy with.

Imagine him and Antonio

The Czech Republic international can play upfront – a position that manager David Moyes really does need to bolster – but he has predominantly been deployed on the flanks until this season.

Hlozek has provided four goals and eight assists in 20 appearances this season, all coming in a central role. It builds on last season’s tally of 15 goals and nine assists, where he averaged a direct contribution every 75.9 minutes, as per Transfermarkt.

[snack-amp-story url = “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/latest-west-ham-news-transfer-updates-gsb-kretinsky-moyes” title=”Read the latest West Ham news, transfer updates and much, much more!”]

Michail Antonio has had his fair share of injury woes over the years and at 31, you can’t expect that to improve in the future. Moyes has been left with just one senior option in the centre-forward position for nearly two years now, so a new frontman is certainly a priority in 2022.

The 6 foot 2 dynamo, valued at £15.3m by Transfermarkt, is a hugely encouraging long-term prospect and one that should leave many around the London Stadium buzzing with delight.

Pavel Paska, who is the agent of both Hlozek and Tomas Soucek, believes his client is an “extraordinary talent” who “has everything an attacker needs,” whilst scout Jacek Kulig has described Hlozek as “an incredible talent” and Czech’s best talent since the emergence of Tomas Rosicky.

Just imagine him alongside Antonio or him providing the perfect foil for the 31-year-old talisman as the season goes on.

On this evidence, he’d be a signing that would leave the fanbase absolutely buzzing, especially given the success stories of Soucek and Vladimir Coufal and the recent involvement of Kretinksy, who should help them tenfold in any likely deal.

Rhodes dismisses home advantage for South Africa

Jonty Rhodes has said home advantage will mean little in next month’s Champions Trophy in South Africa since teams travel a lot more and are used to different conditions these days

Jonty Rhodes: “They [South Africa] are a really well-balanced unit and they are setting standards for the other teams to chase•Getty Images

Jonty Rhodes, the former South African player, has said home advantage will mean little in next month’s Champions Trophy in South Africa since teams travel a lot more and are used to different conditions these days.”The support of the crowd does make a difference if things go a bit flat and they can lift you, but South Africa won’t be relying on that,” Rhodes told the Supercricket website. “They’ll be relying on planning and getting in place all the processes involved in winning.”Rhodes, a fielding coach for IPL team Mumbai Indians, said South Africa were favourites for the trophy along with Australia and India. “They [South Africa] are a really well-balanced unit and they are setting standards for the other teams to chase. But Australia are written off far too easily, they will obviously be strong contenders, they have a good record in the competition and they know how to win. India are also very good, they’ve learnt how to travel and win and they have destructive bowlers and hitters in their line-up.”South Africa’s strength, Rhodes said, was their consistency, which is important in a 50-over tournament. The top eight teams have been divided into two groups of four each and the top two from each group will qualify for the semi-finals of the two-week long tournament. “They’ve been playing great cricket, the team is settled and everyone knows their roles, they’ve got special players in batting, bowling and fielding. Their preparation and organisation will be excellent and they’ve learnt how to hit the ground running. They’ve learnt how to switch on very quickly and the management team of Graeme Smith and Mickey Arthur have been very good at that.”But you can’t afford to have a bad day. We saw that in the Twenty20 World Cup, where we played great cricket but, to take nothing away from the opposition, someone like Shahid Afridi produced something special.”South Africa will open the tournament, from September 22 to October 5, with a game against Sri Lanka in Centurion.

Bad light brightens Somerset's day

A round-up from the latest action in the County Championship

Cricinfo staff30-Aug-2009Division OneMarcus Trescothick and Craig Wieswetter were again to the fore for Somerset on the final day against Hampshire, but it was the dreary weather which eventually saved the visitors from defeat at The Rose Bowl. Following-on, Somerset resumed on 50 without loss but Arul Suppiah was soon bowled by Dominic Cork, while Justin Langer (32) departed to Imran Tahir. Trescothick, who crashed 118 in the first innings, added yet another fifty to help stabilise a wobbling Somerset innings. He is now just six runs short of 1600 for the Championship season, far and away the highest run-scorer. But when he fell to Danny Briggs for 73, Somerset still trailed by three runs, making Kieswetter’s second fifty of the match all the more vital. He followed his 94 in the first innings with 70, and although Somerset were dismissed for 294, they held a crucial lead of 139 before bad light and rain put paid to Hampshire’s chances of knocking them off quickly.

Gloucestershire were set an unlikely 406 to win, and lost Chris Taylor early for 25. Berg then struck twice in two balls, dismissing Kadeer Ali followed by Steve Adshead, cleaned up first ball. James Franklin was the mainstay for Gloucestershire, stroking an unbeaten 80, and he was well supported by Richard Dawson (35) for nearly 22 overs, but Berg cleaned up the tail to record career-best figures of 5 for 55, bringing rare cheer and an even rarer win to Lord’s.3rd dayKent took complete control of their match against Surrey at Canterbury and look set to top Division Two, after a commanding third day performance. Geraint Jones moved from 102 to a career-best 156, putting on 183 with Darren Stevens who cracked 112. Jones was mostly untroubled until a lapse in concentration cost him his wicket, while Stevens suffered a tortuous period in the nineties where he could have fallen several times, most memorably when he offered a slip catch to Stewart Walters who couldn’t cling on. Neither for that matter could Pedro Collins who dropped a dolly at mid-off off Tim Linley, and Surrey’s day got even worse when they conceded five runs after Walters picked up Jon Batty’s discarded wicketkeeping glove to collect the incoming throw. Surrey suffered further in their second innings, both openers falling within five balls of each other, as James Tredwell picked up three of the five to fall. They lead by 54 with effectively four wickets remaining, as Mark Ramprakash was yesterday ruled out of the remainder of the season with a broken thumb.

Cross drops Leeds update ahead of January

Leeds United are not expected to do much business in the January transfer window, according to LeedsLive reporter Beren Cross.

What’s the word?

The ever-reliable journalist delivered a fresh claim to supporters in a recent Q&A on the website, where he said:

“We know the club and Bielsa do not see a lot of value in January, nor do they see the time available for new arrivals to have an impact before the season finishes, given how long they will need with the under-23s and on the training field to reach Bielsa’s high standards.

“If Leeds are really in the thick of the bottom four or five teams when the window opens though, there surely has to be some frank conversations about the risks of not strengthening for the final stretch of the campaign.

“It will be interesting to see what compromises, if any, Bielsa or the hierarchy make in the window to get business done.”

Worrying news

The Yorkshire giants are just one place and two points above the relegation zone heading into this weekend’s fixtures and they could well drop inside it, depending on other results.

Marcelo Bielsa’s side face the stiff test of Brighton and Hove Albion in Saturday’s late kick-off, with the Seagulls currently occupying a place inside the top ten.

A lot of their struggles this season could be attributed to persistent injury problems to several key stars, including vice-captain Luke Ayling and leading striker Patrick Bamford, both of whom have missed several months of action.

Neither has a genuine alternative, so it’s no wonder that United have suffered in recent games, and it would make their stubbornness to change their ways this January look stupid.

If Leeds are to avoid a relegation scrap all season, then they may well need to bolster the playing squad this winter, as failure to do so could leave Bielsa and co in a very precarious position.

This latest claim from Cross will surely leave those around Elland Road absolutely worried about what might lie ahead. The Whites have won just twice from 12 league games and that doesn’t look like changing anytime soon with the aforementioned players still on the treatment table.
