Steve Harmison has expressed surprise at his omission from England’s squad for South Africa after speaking to team director Andy Flower prior to the announcement earlier this month. Harmison was the most notable absentee from the 16-man squad and the general consensus is that it draws a line under his England career – seven weeks after he helped regain the Ashes at The Oval.”I had spoken to Andy Flower three or four times before and everything coming out of that was positive,” Harmison told BBC Sport. “But they [the selectors[ made a decision about building for the Ashes in 2010-11 and I didn’t think I would be around then.”Harmison has only contributed bit-part performances for England in Tests in the last four years. Since 2005 he has provided one truly match-winning display – against Pakistan at Old Trafford in 2006 – with the next-best effort coming against South Africa, again at The Oval, last year.Despite the latest snub – which came nearly a month after he lost his ECB contract – Harmison was noncommittal on an international retirement. “I don’t see the point because I don’t think they’re going to pick me,” he said. “At this moment in time, I’m not in. If it came about again we’d have to see where we are.”England have got a group of five fast bowlers who have got a chance of winning them a series in South Africa. I hope they do do that then questions won’t be asked anymore. Comments about an ultimatum disappointed me, there was never none given from me.”

Newcastle transfer news on Lorenzo Insigne

Newcastle United have reportedly now probed to sign Lorenzo Insigne in the January transfer window.

The Lowdown: Insigne saga continues…

The St James’ Park outfit have been linked with a move to sign the Italy forward ever since the completed takeover on Tyneside by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) consortium.

Rai Radio (via Sport Witness) reported a couple of weeks ago that they will attempt to throw a large amount of money at Insigne in order to try and sign him as a free agent next summer.

However, given that he has still not signed a new deal at Napoli, the Serie A club may want to cash in on their £43.2m-rated star in January at risk of losing him for nothing at the end of his contract.

The Latest: Newcastle probe for Insigne

As per Calciomercato, Newcastle have now ‘probed the ground’ in order to try and sign Insigne, along with Tottenham Hotspur and West Ham United, the latter of whom are currently fourth in the Premier League table.

There is reportedly ‘no agreement’ with Napoli over the extension of his contract, leaving the door potentially open for a January exit.

The Verdict: Difficult

It would be extremely difficult for Newcastle to attract Insigne to Tyneside in January given that they are currently in a relegation battle. With the likes of West Ham and Spurs pushing for European places, they seem likelier destinations for Napoli’s captain, even if the Magpies could offer him more money.

Of course, signing a player of his calibre would be quite the coup, given that he has played so many games at the highest level with both club and country. He would improve Eddie Howe’s side massively going forward, as he averages more shots in Serie A than any Toon player does in the top flight, while his average key passes (2.1) and dribbles (1.1) per game are only bettered by Matt Ritchie and Allan Saint-Maximin respectively at St James’ Park.

Nonetheless, the Italy international would likely be a very difficult player for the Magpies to attract come January.

Siddle joins Australia's casualty list

Australia’s injury list from their tour of India has grown again with the news that Peter Siddle will return home after suffering stiffness in his left side during Monday’s win in Mohali

Australia’s injury list from their tour of India has grown again with the news that Peter Siddle will return home after suffering stiffness in his left side during Monday’s win in Mohali. Siddle bowled five overs during the victory and the team physio Kevin Sims said the decision was in part a precautionary measure.”Peter’s injury does not appear to be a serious problem but it is unlikely he will be able to safely bowl within the next week which would therefore not allow him to have any further participation in the tour,” Sims said. “With this in mind we have made the decision that Peter will return to Australia where he will reviewed by Cricket Australia medical staff to ensure he is available for selection at the beginning of the Australian summer.”Australia’s selectors are yet to decide on a replacement player and the depth of the nation’s bowling stocks has already been tested during the tour. Brett Lee and James Hopes have flown home from India mid-series and the squad was already without Nathan Bracken, who has a knee injury.Clint McKay and Moises Henriques have joined the squad to boost the attack and the selectors will need to scour the state ranks for a third fast man to add to the group. Their options will include Dirk Nannes and Brett Geeves, both of whom have been part of the squad over the past year.

Everton fans react to Iwobi revelation

Farhad Moshiri was the driving force behind the signing of Alex Iwobi, not Marcel Brands.

That’s according to Phil Kirkbride, Everton correspondent for The Liverpool Echo.

Brands was apparently ‘certain’ that the idea of signing Iwobi from Arsenal would ‘die down’.

But majority shareholder Moshiri ‘pressed on’ with the deal, which was confirmed on 8 August 2019.

This will have added to Brands’ feeling that he wasn’t in ‘complete control’, Kirkbride writes.

The revelation comes after Brands left his post as director of football by mutual consent.

Everton’s Iwobi deal a mistake?

At £27.36million, the Nigerian ranks as the fourth most-expensive signing in Everton’s history.

He’s gone on to make 78 appearances for the Blues to date, but only managed to deliver six goals and five assists.

One Everton podcaster said following the 5-2 defeat to Watford in October that Iwobi has ‘done nothing for two years since he’s been here’.

Twitter fan feed The Toffee Blues relayed Kirkbride’s insight, and here’s what supporters made of it.

These Everton fans slam Moshiri after Iwobi reveal

“Of course it was. Wasn’t the overpaying his former club Arsenal the giveaway? Brands is the fall guy here, Moshiri is the main problem.”

“That’s enough to never let moshiri make another footballing decision again. Just because he has got dough doesn’t mean his footballing decisions aren’t the worst in the country”

Ismael delivered Gardner-Hickman masterstroke

With 21 Championship games played so far this season, West Brom have racked up a rather mixed bag of results with 10 wins, seven draws and four defeats under Valerien Ismael, who replaced Sam Allardyce in charge of the Baggies back in June.

During his time in charge of the Midlands club, one big positive from the manager that the fans can be proud of is giving Taylor Gardner-Hickman his chance to shine in the team, which he certainly has done.

Even though the 19-year-old has only played in three Championship games so far this season, his performances in those outings have earned him an overall season rating of 7.08/10 according to WhoScored, making him West Brom’s fifth-highest rated player in the league.

This shows just how well he has done when given the chance alongside the other senior players in Albion’s squad and why former Baggies star Carlton Palmer said it was a “magnificent” decision from Ismael to give Gardner-Hickman his chance to play.

His previous appearance for the Baggies in their 2-1 win over Coventry City saw him deployed in a central midfield position rather than the right wing-back role he had occupied previously.

Against the Sky Blues, Gardner-Hickman made three clearances, four interceptions and two tackles and blocked two shots, as well as winning seven ground duels, showing off his defensive capabilities and awareness in midfield.

This performance against Coventry earned the 19-year-old a solid overall match rating of 7.3/10 from SofaScore, as well as being called “impressive” by Baggies podcaster Chris Lepkowski.

After making a total of 64 appearances with West Brom’s under-18 and under-23 sides, scoring nine goals and providing eight assists along the way, it’s great to see Gardner-Hickman not only playing in the first team but thriving, a masterstroke for which Ismael should be given a lot of credit as well.

Moving forward, if the teenager keeps making the most out of every opportunity he gets for West Brom from now until the end of the season, he could definitely help them to secure promotion to the Premier League given his versatility and defensive talents, duly ending the campaign as one of the team’s shining lights.

England earn consolation win

After losing the one-day and Twenty20 series, England women rounded off their tour of the West Indies by beating the hosts by six wickets in St Kitts

After losing the one-day and Twenty20 series, England women rounded off their tour of the West Indies by beating the hosts by six wickets in St Kitts. Katherine Brunt and Holly Colvin helped set up the win with tidy bowling displays to keep West Indies down to 119 before Charlotte Edwards and Jenny Gunn led the chase with brisk cameos.West Indies rested three players – Stafanie Taylor, Anisa Mohammed and Cordel Jack – and opted to bat but failed to post a challenging score. Brunt and Holvin kept them in check, taking 2 for 27 and 1 for 15 in their four overs respectively. Brunt put West Indies on the back foot early, dismissing Merissa Aguilleira with her third delivery. Isa Guha didn’t get a wicket but was very economical and West Indies were 40 for 3 after ten overs. The hosts didn’t succeed in putting together big partnerships and their most productive stand was 47 for the fifth wicket between Pamela Levin and Stacy-Ann King. Lavine top scored with 61 from 49 balls with five fours and a couple sixes.England had no real problems in the chase, with the first pair adding 49 in quick time. Edwards, the captain, made 29 hitting three fours before she was dismissed, caught behind by Aguilleria off Shakera Selman’s medium pace. West Indies hit back by running out Rainsford-Brent for 19, but Gunn’s 26-ball 35 boosted the chase. She was dismissed with an athletic catch from King, but Caroline Atkins and Brunt guided England to victory by six wickets in the 19th over.”It’s been a tough two weeks of cricket but it will be incredibly valuable moving forward,” said Edwards after the game. “We have been able to expose some of our younger players to a lot of international cricket in a short space of time and have learnt a lot, not just about the West Indies and how they play but about ourselves as a team. I would like to congratulate the West Indians, they outplayed us and deserved to win but we’ll be back in May determined to retain the World Twenty20 and this trip has been important part of our preparations.”
