Misbah-ul-Haq to join squad in New Zealand

The thinness of resources in Pakistan’s middle order has opened the door for Misbah-ul-Haq to revive, once again, his international career

The thinness of resources in Pakistan’s middle order has opened the door for Misbah-ul-Haq to revive, once again, his international career. Misbah was dropped from all three Pakistan squads before the team left on its tour of New Zealand, following a poor run with the bat this year. The withdrawal of Younis Khan from the New Zealand trip, however, not only left Pakistan without a captain, but also a No. 3 who averages 50 in Test cricket. Mohammad Yousuf, who took over the captaincy from Younis, immediately asked for Misbah’s return, citing the need for his experience in a middle order which included inexperienced batsmen Fawad Alam and Umar Akmal in the first Test in Dunedin.A member of the selection committee told Cricinfo that Misbah would most likely be in New Zealand before the second Test, due to begin in Wellington on December 3. “We don’t know exactly what day he will go, but we are keen to send him there to be part of the squad,” the official said. The decision needed to be approved by the board but that is thought to be a formality. The request for Misbah’s inclusion was initially turned down by Pakistan’s selection committee. However, following the failure of most of Pakistan’s batting line – the Akmal brothers apart – in the first innings of the ongoing first Test in Dunedin, the selectors agreed to send Misbah out to New Zealand. Before the younger Akmal saved Pakistan with a hundred on debut, Pakistan had collapsed to 85 for 5, and the middle order of Alam, Yousuf and Shoaib Malik, was looking undermanned, particularly with an opening pair as flimsy as Imran Farhat and Khurram Manzoor. The decision is bound to cause comment, especially as Pakistan already have a large 17-man squad touring in New Zealand. Additionally, they already have a middle-order option, Faisal Iqbal, in place. If he plays, he will at least provide a safe pair of hands in the slips. Farhat, who has a long history of dropping chances in the slip cordon, was at first slip and he promptly dropped two in New Zealand’s first innings.Misbah returned to the Pakistan team after a five-year hiatus in 2007, in magnificent fashion. His inventive, fearless batting led Pakistan to the brink of World Twenty20 glory that same year, and he bolstered his reputation as Pakistan’s man for a crisis by scoring two Test hundreds in India towards the end of the year. The returns since were not so spectacular and this year in particular has been poor – an average of 28.57 in five Tests and 300 runs in 13 ODIs. He has been scoring domestically, however, the route through which he came back into the national side in 2007 and the day he was axed, he responded with a career-best 284 in the Quaid-e-Azam trophy.

West Ham refuse to rule out Wijnaldum

As per 90min, a shock transfer claim has come out of West Ham United involving former Liverpool star and Paris-Saint Germain midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum.

The Lowdown: Agents approach Moyes…

As confirmed by the boss himself, agents have already been attempting to offer their top players to both manager David Moyes and West Ham United (football.london).

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/west-ham-latest-updates/” title=”West Ham latest updates!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Scotsman’s candid admission in a recent press conference perhaps exemplifies his side’s season so far and how they’re continuing to defy expectation, with West Ham currently still fighting on all fronts.

As the January window looms, the Hammers’ top priorities appear to be an emergency centre-half and the continued pursuit of a back-up striker to Michail Antonio (The Daily Mail).

However, that hasn’t stopped them from being tipped to bolster their midfield too, with 90min now sharing some surprise news.

The Latest: West Ham approached over Wijnaldum…

As per the outlet and reporter Graeme Bailey, West Ham and Moyes have been ‘approached’ by representatives of PSG player Wijnaldum just months after his move to the Parc des Princes from Liverpool.

His agents are apparently ‘working on finding him a potential loan move in the new year’ with West Ham among those to have been offered the 31-year-old alongside ‘more than half the Premier League’.

The Irons’ stance is not yet clear as they have allegedly refused to rule out the possibility of signing him temporarily in January.

The Verdict: Get it done?

Capable of playing further forward in the attacking midfield positions, Wijnaldum is arguably proven in the English top flight and could come as a cheaper alternative to target Jesse Lingard – especially on loan.

The 85-cap ace, called ‘sensational’ by Reds boss Jurgen Klopp, has scored an impressive 26 goals over those appearances for the Netherlands – potentially highlighting his threat going forward.

Despite playing a bit-part role under Mauricio Pochettino this season, he’s still managed to make his mark in the Champions League group stages with two goals, all while averaging an impressive 91% pass accuracy in midfield – more than any West Ham regular domestically with over two starts (WhoScored).

The only big caveat could be his reported £165,000-per-week wages, over £40,000 more than what West Ham’s current highest earner, Kurt Zouma, is taking home (spotrac).

Australia forced to wait another day for series win

West Indies had Australia shuddering for half the day but by stumps it was the hosts who were one wicket from cracking in a courageous chase. Australia grabbed four breakthroughs in the last hour to be on the verge of a 2-0 series win, with Kemar Roach and Gavin Tonge needing another 51 to reach their unlikely victory target of 359.The match seemed headed for a quick finish when West Indies were 3 for 68 at lunch – the dangermen Chris Gayle and Ramnaresh Sarwan were gone – but Narsingh Deonarine and Brendan Nash combined in a brave partnership that gave them hope. By the scheduled end Australia needed three wickets and took the extra half hour, succeeding only in dismissing Sulieman Benn and Ravi Rampaul. Roach and Tonge not only held on, but added 29 in 30 balls to take the score to 9 for 308, extending the game into a fifth day.On a swinging afternoon West Indies had started to believe in a drawn series during the second session, when the 128-run stand between Deonarine and Nash was taking them closer to what would be the second-highest successful run-chase at the ground. At tea Australia’s bowling had been ineffective, flat and as sick as Mitchell Johnson. By stumps Johnson, who was suffering stomach problems, had bowled through the pain to gain three wickets and Ricky Ponting could relax over his 35th birthday dinner. There will be no long party for the captain, but with a sunny day predicted for Sunday, most of his fears over the result will have disappeared.Just as Ponting’s men were wondering if they would be giving up two huge chases in a row at the ground – last year South Africa pursued 414 – they broke through twice in two overs. Deonarine and Dwayne Bravo, the last game-changer in the order, departed to return control to Australia and more dismissals came in the final stages.A maiden wicket went to Clint McKay when he bowled Denesh Ramdin, but the final one stayed out of reach. Benn struck two sixes off Johnson in his 33 before Theo Doropoulos, the substitute fielder, made up for his earlier miss at mid-on, and Rampaul went in the same Johnson over. Then the last pair showed similar determination as Deonarine and Nash to hold out.Until his 183rd delivery Nash was an immoveable object, but Doug Bollinger took the new ball and delivered an off-cutter that hit off stump without the batsman playing a shot. It was a sad end for such a gutsy display in which Nash was the side’s brick wall, deflecting the ball and insults from the fielders during his 65. Deonarine more than doubled his previous best score with 82, his first Test half-century, as the aggressor in the stand that lasted more than three hours. The combination was slow at the start, but West Indies didn’t need to rush and preventing any further damage was key. As the partnership went on the Australians increased their appealing, especially when the spinners were on, and Marcus North could have had an lbw if a not-out decision for Deonarine, on 65, had been referred to the third umpire.Further resistance came after tea, with Nash becalmed for 70 minutes on 48, as the Australians worked on suffocating the pair. Neither left-hander made a fatal mistake until Deonarine played back to Shane Watson, who was working from around the wicket, and the ball deflected from pad on the stumps. The Australians roared in relief and were jubilant again a run later when Bravo lashed at Johnson and was caught in the gully by Michael Hussey.Johnson spent time off the field and on taking the wicket bent over in exhaustion as his team-mates patted his back. Nathan Hauritz was also unwell but the burst of wickets after tea ended the queasy feeling for the team.Nash was unflustered throughout, and deserved the applause when he moved from 48 to his half-century with a glide for four off Watson. Even the bowler, the most chirpy of the Australians, clapped his former Queensland team-mate. Watson’s 2 for 24 off 12 was an impressive return blighted only by his antics when he removed Chris Gayle to a catch behind on 21.Travis Dowlin (22) had already departed, finding one of two men in the deep with a hook shot, and when Watson captured Gayle the bowler cheered like a gorilla within a couple of metres of the batsman. Watson was immediately summoned by the umpires, but the Australians weren’t too worried as they thought they had the crucial wicket and the rest would be easy.At the beginning of the day the tourists’ bowling surge continued as Australia were dismissed for 150, their lowest completed innings since 93 in a dead rubber against India in 2004. They lost their final two wickets in the first 27 balls of the morning, adding 13 valuable runs to their overnight advantage of 345.Bravo’s three wickets had kept his side in the game on the third day and he collected 4 for 42, finishing the innings with Hauritz’s edge to slip. West Indies arrived with most predictions of a cleansweep but they have ruffled the hosts since they were battered in Brisbane. They had a chance in the morning but by stumps they needed a miracle.

A diretoria e comissão técnica acham positivo o time receber o apoio da Fiel antes do Dérbi.

Tottenham transfer news on Kessie

Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly now ‘in the lead’ to sign Franck Kessie from AC Milan.

The Lowdown: Stock rising

Kessie’s stock is certainly rising and his market value has never been higher than the £49.5m that it is now (Transfermarkt).

He has become such a key player for an AC Milan team that has shot to second place in the Serie A table just behind rivals Inter, chipping in with five goals from midfield.

His performances have earned lavish praise from manager Stefano Pioli, who even went as far as to claim that he is a ‘sumptuous’ footballer earlier this term.

The Latest: Tottenham lead

As per Calciomercato, Spurs are now ‘in the lead’ in the race for his signature, although face competition from PSG.

Crucially, he is out of contract at the end of the season, and with no renewal at the San Siro yet, Milan risk losing him on a free transfer in the summer if they do not cash in next month.

The Verdict: No-brainer

At 25 years of age, Kessie is only going to get better, and so it is a no-brainer for Antonio Conte’s team to snap him up now, especially with the fact that they could get a bargain due to his contract situation.

Likened by Milan legend Antonio Cassano to former Manchester City powerhouse Yaya Toure, whose six-foot-two frame helped him dominate Premier League midfield battles, as he was able to three top-flight titles, Kessie also has the potential to be a rock in the North London club’s midfield for years to come.

He offers far more of a threat than the likes of Harry Winks, Oliver Skipp and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg from the middle of the park at the moment, averaging more shots (1.1) and key passes (1.1) per game in their respective domestic leagues so far this campaign (WhoScored), and should fit into the side straight away.

Newcastle transfer news on Botman

Nick Hammond is reportedly now pushing to sign Lille centre-back Sven Botman for Newcastle United.

The Lowdown: Busy, busy

The January transfer window is set to be a busy one for the St. James’ Park faithful, with players such as Aaron Ramsey and Isco linked with a move to the North East in recent days.

Hammond, who has been hired as a transfer consultant on a short-term deal and will now oversee the winter window (Sky Sports), will especially be looking for players to try and combat a recent injury crisis that has emerged on Tyneside, following the latest issues suffered by Callum Wilson, Allan Saint-Maximin and Ryan Fraser.

Nonetheless, as Eddie Howe’s team currently find themselves in the relegation zone at the moment, next month is now such a crucial one in their new era.

The Latest: Pushing for Botman

As per Milan News, Hammond is now ‘pushing’ to sign Botman for the Toon, but will have to pay a transfer fee of at least €30m (£25.2m) for his signature.

Nonetheless, AC Milan also want to sign him, but it would be ‘difficult’ for them to pay the asking price.

The Verdict: Sign

With no fewer than 42 goals conceded in the Premier League so far this season, the joint-most with bottom-placed Norwich City, it is clear that the defence has been NUFC’s main problem.

Thus, they need to bring in some defenders in January to improve the spine of the team, and Botman would do just that.

Described as a ‘machine’ who ‘doesn’t make mistakes’ by Lille teammate Jose Fonte, the Netherlands international is also comfortable with the ball at his feet and can play out from the back, given that he averages more passes at a higher accuracy (WhoScored) than any of Howe’s current options at centre-back.

Nonetheless, he is only 21 years of age as well and so will only get better, thus January presents the perfect time to snap him up – wait any longer and other clubs may well come swooping in.
