Leicester stars James Maddison and Ben Chilwell involved in hilarious exchange on Twitter

[ad_pod ]Being called up for the national side is probably pretty daunting for a young player. They’ve got to put aside all club rivalries and work with players who are usually on the opposing teams week in week out.It presumably helps to have a player from club level standing beside you, and fortunately for James Maddison and Ben Chilwell, they can rely on each other.Watch Leicester City Live Streams With StreamFootball.tv Below

Indeed, both Leicester stars have been named in Gareth Southgate’s latest England squad, and they shared a moment on Twitter that highlights the type of camaraderie they will bring to the Three Lions’ set-up.

It all started when Leicester City’s official account posted an image of Chilwell looking at Maddison’s phone over his shoulder.

The left-back then took that tweet and joked that the midfielder was checking to see if anyone had sent him some rather private messages, thanks to his England call-up.

Maddison wasn’t having any of that though, and he fired back with a quip saying that he was actually checking if Chilwell was fit this weekend so that he could sort out his Fantasy Premier League team.

Celtic star Ryan Christie faces tough test when Scotland take on Russia

Ryan Christie has enjoyed a phenomenal start to the season, but he faces a tough task on Friday night that could determine just how good he truly is.

Christie has smashed in eight goals and five assists in just 12 appearances so far this season, a stunning effort to kick off the new campaign.

His form has been so good in fact, that John Hughes recently said the youngster “must be on the radar of big Premier League clubs”, per The Scottish Sun.

Now, while this isn’t exactly what Celtic fans want to hear, it is a massive compliment to the 24 year-old, and it will come as no surprise that he is expected to start Scotland’s Euro 2020 qualifier against Russia on Friday night, per BBC.

The report places the Hoops starlet on the left-side of midfield, where he will come against perhaps Russia’s best player, Mario Fernandes.

The attack-minded right-back was born in Brazil, but acquired Russian citizenship in 2016, and wowed spectators at the 2018 World Cup – WhoScored gave him a 7.42 overall rating for his performances at the tournament, as he scored once and assisted once in five showings.

He has been in fine form again this season, racking up ratings of 8.22, 7.38, 8.22, 8.69 and 7.19 in his last five CSKA Moscow appearances, earning man of the match twice, scoring two goals and grabbing an assist in that time, per WhoScored.

Fernandes is no slouch defensively either, mustering up 1.9 tackles and 1.1 interceptions per game this campaign, while the stats site list some of his strengths as aerial duels, defensive contribution and concentration.

Quite simply, this is a well-rounded full-back more than capable of playing at the highest level – he has 36 Champions League appearances to his name and was attracting interest from Premier League sides this summer.

If Christie can rock up to Hampden and put on a show against Fernandes, it will not only put him on the radar of big teams just as Hughes suggested, but it will confirm what Celtic fans have likely suspected for quite some time – this is a truly top player in the making.

Ex-Newcastle United forward Michael Owen reflects on feud with Alan Shearer

[ad_pod ]

The whole Michael Owen Alan Shearer debacle was a bit of a strange one, wasn’t it?

Two goliaths of the English game clashing on social media like high school students, each trying their hardest to air one another’s dirty laundry.

Twitter-gate was the latest episode in a lengthy feud that has seen the pair locking horns since their relationship went sour at St. James’ Park. Is it pathetic that two grown men are arguing on Twitter? Yes. Is it entertaining? Absolutely.

And in case you were wondering, Shearer definitely came out of the scrap with a few less bruises. Sorry, Michael.

Owen has recently emerged from his cave to promote the release of his latest book, ‘Reboot’. It means we, the public, have been afforded hours-worth of not-so-juicy, uncharismatic material from the man himself.

Owen recently reflected on his time at Newcastle United and his relationship with Shearer in an interview with talkSPORT…

Refreshingly mature from the former Magpie.

Crystal Palace fans hijack club’s tweet for Jairo Riedewald’s birthday

[ad_pod ]

Some Crystal Palace fans have taken to Twitter to hijack the club’s tweet in celebration of Jairo Riedewald’s birthday.

Whilst it is fairly standard procedure on a football club’s official account to celebrate a player’s birthday, the situation of the man it is aimed at is not a standard one by any means.

Riedewald has made just 12 Premier League appearances since signing for the Eagles back in 2017, and finds himself well out of favour under Roy Hodgson.

The Dutchman, signed from Ajax for £7.9m, has made just two appearances in 2019 as he struggles to get any sort of game time under the former England manager, despite being able to play in midfield, at centre-back or at left-back as he did in his last outing against Colchester – even that showing was because of injuries to Joel Ward, Patrick van Aanholt and Jeffrey Schlupp.

As a result of the 23-year-old’s situation, some Palace fans have hijacked the post. One fan suggested giving him his career back as a present, whilst another simply asked: “Who is this man?”

Let’s take a look at some more of the Twitter reaction…

Crystal Palace hero Damien Delaney’s comments reminiscent of 2013 disagreement

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Pundit View series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent quotes from journalists, pundits, players and managers…

Former Crystal Palace centre-back and fan favourite Damien Delaney has spoken to The Athletic about a number of talking points from his days at Selhurst Park.

The Eagles signed the Irishman in perilous times under Dougie Freedman, having only recently exited administration – the south Londoners had just one fit centre-back at the time of his arrival.

Delaney went on to make 193 appearances for the south Londoners, helping the club earn promotion to the Premier League and consolidate themselves in the top-flight.

He also spoke of Frank de Boer’s botched spell in SE25, and his comments trigger the memory of another spat between a Palace manager and player from 2013…

What did he say?

Delaney told The Athletic’s Matt Woosnam: “I was down at the other training ground with the kids, not even in the building. Me and him had differences of opinion on things. I made my opinions known and that was the end of me — which was fine.

“I didn’t play for him or train for him. I had no relationship with the guy.”

When asked if he felt his Palace career was over at that point, the 38-year-old said: “No, I was fully sure that he wouldn’t last.”

Reminiscent of Owen Garvan and Ian Holloway’s spat

Back in 2013, after the Eagles had secured the promotion previously referenced above, attacking midfielder Owen Garvan – who started the Wembley win over Watford in the playoff final – found himself left out of Palace’s 25-man Premier League squad.

The Irishman then took to his Twitter account to write: “I’ll be here longer than he will, trust me.”

His words appeared to be aimed at Holloway and eventually rang true, with the former Blackpool boss leaving just eight games into the Premier League season.

Delaney’s prediction also came true, with De Boer sacked just four league games into his tenure at the club after a turbulent spell at the helm in which he failed to see his side score a single Premier League goal.

The former Palace No.27’s presumption about the Dutchman came true, as did Garvan’s on Holloway – there must be a crystal ball somewhere at Selhurst Park.

Real Madrid fans take to Twitter to slam Thibaut Courtois

Real Madrid will surely have to go back to the drawing board after their horrible display against PSG.

Los Blancos suffered a huge 3-0 defeat at Parc des Princes as Zinedine Zidane continued his struggles at the helm.

Fans, naturally, have not taken too kindly to the result, and goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois has come under fire.

Obviously, the former Chelsea goalkeeper conceded three times throughout the encounter and has generally endured a poor start to the campaign.

Indeed, the club have yet to keep a clean sheet in La Liga, with Courtois conceding six goals in four games.

Many of them seem to think the 27-year-old is just not good enough for Real and they described his display as “embarrassing” while claiming that he is the “definition of a joke”.

The Belgium international will certainly have to improve as the season progresses, with Real now looking to bounce back in group games against Galatasaray and Club Brugge.

Nottingham Forest’s Yuri Riberio shows his worth at left-back

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s The Chalkboard series, which provides a tactical insight into teams, players, managers, potential signings and more…

Nottingham Forest edged into the Championship playoffs last weekend with a victory over Barnsley at the City Ground.

The 1-0 win was courtesy of a rare Ben Watson strike as the 34-year-old met Matty Cash’s cut-back pass to net his first for the club and first in three years.

It was Forest’s only shot on target all afternoon as goalkeeper Brice Samba kept the league strugglers at bay, keeping them inside the relegation zone.

Reds boss Sabri Lamouchi yet again made a couple of changes to his side, who have now gone seven unbeaten, as Joe Lolley and Tiago Silva returned to the starting XI despite Forest beating league leaders Swansea a week earlier.

That meant that Yuri Ribeiro kept his place at left-back over Jack Robinson.

On the Chalkboard

Lamouchi may have stumbled across their best defence after his men picked up a second successive clean sheet and fifth in all competitions.

Joe Worrall and Michael Dawson have become a solid foundation at the back, playing in all eight Championship ties while Matty Cash has seen his role at right-back increased due to the injury to summer signing Carl Jenkinson.

On the other side of the defence, another off-season addition has particularly caught the eye – Ribeiro in the last two matches has kept Reds regular Robinson out of the side.

The 26-year-old made 40 appearances last season, but the Portuguese ace has come in and looked every bit like a perfect option at left-back.

He is averaging a rating higher than anyone else in the squad at 7.33 and has won more aerial duels than Robinson with an average of 3 per game.

While the 22-year-old has also recorded more interceptions (1.5) and clearances (3.5) per outing too.

His most significant contribution, however, has been in the attacking phase of the game where he is averaging 2.5 key passes per game.

This is some way above anyone else in the squad – thus suggesting his impact along the left is quite substantial.

Robinson may face a battle to get back into the side based on Ribeiro’s two league appearances.

Tottenham fans unimpressed with Toby Alderweireld comments

Tottenham Hotspur fans on Twitter have been left unimpressed with defender Toby Alderweireld’s comments in the aftermath of the 7-2 defeat against Bayern Munich.

One of the senior players in the Spurs squad fronted up and spoke to The Telegraph after the Champions League debacle, saying that there isn’t a lack of commitment within in the squad, and that everybody is hungry and working hard.

Recent performances and results certainly don’t reflect that in general, but the players did show some fight when they dug in for around an hour with 10 men against Southampton last week, picking up three points in the process.

Nevertheless, the heavy midweek loss and the Carabao Cup exit against Colchester United will be playing on the minds of some with one trophy opportunity already gone, and the following Tottenham supporters are clearly frustrated about the current situation and Alderweireld’s recent comments.

While one individual simply said “don’t believe you”, another urged the 30-year-old to “stop talking”.

Here is just a selection of the Twitter reaction…

Sheffield United: Fans fuming with Natalie Sawyer after she labels Chris Wilder ‘dinosaur’

Sheffield United have made a fine start to the Premier League, taking eight points from their opening seven matches.

The Blades are defying the odds in the top flight, and have already taken points from the likes of Everton, AFC Bournemouth and Chelsea.

At the heart of their success is manager Chris Wilder, who has guided his boyhood club from League One to the Premier League in just three years.

The 52-year-old is considered by Jamie Redknapp to be one of the best English managers around. Indeed, he has masterminded an innovative system at Bramall Lane in which the outside centre-backs of his 3-5-2 formation overlap the wing-backs and get themselves into attacking positions.

He was even named the LMA Manager of the Year last season ahead of the likes of Pep Guardiola and Jurgen Klopp, which shows just how highly he is rated amongst his peers.

Following his success, Wilder can do no wrong in the eyes of Sheffield United fans. It comes as no surprise, therefore, that many of the Blades faithful were left furious when talkSPORT pundit Natalie Sawyer labelled his style as “dinosaur management” on Monday.

Her comments came after the former Oxford United chief said that he would not “put his arm around” goalkeeper Dean Henderson after his mistake against Liverpool on Saturday.

Fans of the South Yorkshire club were quick to respond to Sawyer, mainly criticising her for using the word dinosaur to describe one of the most forward thinking managers in the English game.

Here is what some of them had to say…

Aston Villa’s Jack Grealish faces stiff int’l competition after position change

This article is part of Football FanCast’s The Chalkboard series, which provides a tactical insight into teams, players, managers, potential signings and more…

Aston Villa ran riot in the Premier League on Saturday afternoon as they picked up just their second win of the season against Norwich City.

Dean Smith’s men were surprisingly rampant, sticking five past an injury-stricken Canaries side with club-record signing Wesley doubling his tally for the season to four, and a trio of midfielders also getting their names on the scoresheet – including captain Jack Grealish.

Villa have been reaping the rewards from a key tweak the manager has made in playing the 24-year-old further forward over the past two matches.

Check out the real life version of FIFA 20’s Volta Football in the video below…

He’s started on the left-wing against Burnley and Norwich and has moved centrally into a number ten role when Matt Targett advances forward or when Smith throws on one of Trezeguet, Jota, or Anwar El Ghazi.

However, as good as this move is for Villa, it will seriously hinder Grealish’s England prospects from here on out.

On the Chalkboard

There’s very much a changing of the guard going on with Gareth Southgate and his senior Three Lions squad – for instance, Kyle Walker, a mainstay over recent years at right-back having earned 48 caps, hasn’t been called up in back-to-back international breaks now while Trent Alexander-Arnold and Aaron Wan-Bissaka have been.

Therefore, the opportunity for the 2016 Toulon Tournament winner has never been greater, yet it still seems like an impossible task ahead.

In the wing position, Grealish will now have to compete with Premier League winner Raheem Sterling, wonderkid Jadon Sancho, and maybe even Marcus Rashford – he wouldn’t start above any of those if they all played for the same club, so he won’t do so internationally either.

Then in the number ten position, it’s just as competitive. Mason Mount’s breakthrough at Chelsea has almost cemented his place as the front-runner for the role, scoring four already this season, but then there’s also his Chelsea teammate Ross Barkley, and Leicester star James Maddison.

Dele Alli can’t even get into the squad above any of these, so again, why would Grealish?

Watch Aston Villa Live Streams With StreamFootball.tv Below

His old central midfield position would give him a far greater chance of breaking into the team ahead of Euro 2020.

Fabian Delph has withdrawn through injury, but given Everton’s form of four straight defeats and his age, it was a surprise to see him even named in the squad.

There is Jordan Henderson, who will be 30 by the time the tournament swings around, so his time at the very top of the international stage is likely to dwindle over the next few years.

There’s not much the 24-year-old can do, he’s massively helping his boyhood club out by thriving in a new role, but it’s one that is a hotbed for talent in the national team currently. He would have to really play out of his skin to be given a chance above any of the names as mentioned above.
