Paris Saint-Germain’s exploits last season, as they broke their Champions League duck, are considered to make Ousmane Dembele a leading contender for the Ballon d’Or. Barcelona wonderkid Yamal remains part of that conversation at 18 years of age.

Getty/GOALWHAT RODRI SAID
Asked to pick out his leading contenders, City talisman Rodri told reporters: “The Ballon d’Or is difficult. PSG has been the team of the season, and it would be hard not to give it to someone from that team. I’m happy for Luis Enrique. I’d like to see Lamine or Pedri win it for my affinity with them, but on sporting merit, Dembele or Vitinha.”
Co-owner Ryan Reynolds could only watch on as Wrexham lost again, succumbing to their third loss of the season as Queens Park Rangers beat them 3-1 on Saturday. Phil Parkinson was critical of his side despite pointing out a few positives. Indeed, the head coach lamented the team's disorganization in defense and believes the backline can do much better.
Wrexham's third loss in opening five Championship games
Wrexham's woeful start to life in the Championship continued with another setback, as Reynolds watched from the stands while QPR secured a 3-1 win at the Racecourse Ground. Parkinson, who might be feeling considerable pressure after three losses in five games, explained why his team have only managed to earn four points in the league so far.
AdvertisementGetty Images SportWrexham are Championship's biggest summer spenders but fighting relegation
The Red Dragons came to the Championship on the back of three successive, record-breaking promotions. To say that their rise in English football has been meteoric would be an understatement. Over the summer, Reynolds' team splashed £33 million (€38m/$44m), recruiting as many as 13 players. However, after five games, Wrexham are languishing in 21st position on the Championship table, one spot and two points above the relegation zone. Adapting to the second tier was never going to be a cakewalk, but things are looking more arduous than expected, considering they were the biggest spenders in the Championship.
Parkinson emphasises Wrexham's own mistakes
Speaking to reporters after the loss, Parkinson said: "We've changed the squad around completely. There was always going to be a period at the start where it doesn't go completely as you'd want it. We've got to work this week on the training pitch to put on a performance like we showed at Millwall two weeks ago [when Wrexham won 2-0].
"The previous home games, we looked like we can create chances and score. But the goals we conceded – on one hand, you'll say they were clinical but when we analyse them all, we'll know we could have done better.
"I thought we started the game well and then we had a scrappy period with some mistakes on the ball. The goal really typified that period. We had to clear our lines quicker and be braver in the key moments to keep the ball out of the net. The third goal was just a real killer for us, it knocked the stuffing out of us."

Shakib Al Hasan has been suspended from bowling in all competitions organised by the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB), after his action was found illegal at independent testing at Loughborough University earlier this month. Shakib’s action had been called into question by the umpires in September, in his one-off appearance for Surrey in the County Championship. To overturn the suspension, Shakib will need to pass an independent reassessment of his action – that is, his degree of elbow extension in testing will need to be below the 15-degree threshold laid out in the regulations. The suspension is officially dated from December 10, the date when the ECB received the results of the assessment from Loughborough University.Shakib claimed nine wickets in that match for Surrey in Taunton in September, his first appearance in county cricket since 2010-11.Of late, Shakib’s career has been marred by controversy stemming from his role as a Member of Parliament in the now overturned Awami League government in Bangladesh, following protests in which several hundred civilians – mostly university students – were killed in July and August. He has retired from T20Is and eventually withdrew from travelling to Bangladesh (he is based in the USA with his family) for what would have been his farewell Test in Mirpur in October, as protests – for and against him – were staged in Dhaka. He has not played international cricket since then.
Manchester United have been urged to launch a January swoop for Marc Guehi after the Crystal Palace captain's proposed move to Liverpool fell through. The centre-back was set to move to Anfield on deadline day but, at the eleventh hour, the move collapsed, leaving Guehi to spend at least the first half of the season at Selhurst Park.
Guehi still at Palace
Guehi was set to move to Liverpool on deadline day, after the Reds agreed a £35 million ($48m) deal, but the Eagles pulled the plug on the deal at the eleventh hour, reportedly due to concerns over Oliver Glasner's future as manager, although he has denied such suggestions. That has led to suggestions that the England defender could instead move on a free transfer next summer, with multiple clubs said to be interested.

United are long-term admirers
United have been linked with a move for Guehi previously, in 2024, but did not formalise that interest. Now, former defender Wes Brown has urged the club to reignite their pursuit of the defender and beat the Reds to the punch.
Wes Brown urges club to make 'brilliant' move
Brown told OLBG: “I don't see why not. I'm not sure if he's got a preferred team out of them. Who he would support, whether it's Liverpool or United in that sense.
“He would cost a lot of money though, but it would be brilliant to see him in a Man United shirt. Like I said, I think he's done everything he's needed to do to prove to get to that top level.
“Now he will probably himself individually, be looking at can he win stuff, can he be battling in Champions League, can he be battling for leagues, FA Cups.
“I think that's one thing, going ahead in his career now he'll be looking to be able to do.”

Firdose Moonda15-Dec-2024Close South Africa 17 for 0 trail England 395 for 9 dec (Sciver-Brunt 128, Bouchier 126, Mlaba 4-90) by 378 runsNat Sciver-Brunt scored the fastest hundred in women’s Tests, off 96 balls, eclipsing debutant Maia Bouchier who had briefly held the England record for herself, with a 124-ball effort in a show of batting dominance in Bloemfontein.England finished on their ninth-highest score and were well on track to post a new record until a South African comeback late in the day clipped their tail. South Africa took 6 for 96 in the third session and left-arm spinner Nonkululeko Mlaba claimed a career-best 4 for 90, as the surface started to show early signs of turn. That will only delight England’s spin pair, Charlie Dean and Sophie Ecclestone, who will know that in hot weather, the surface’s deterioration will accelerate. With overhead cloud and the floodlights on, there was also some movement on offer and Heather Knight hoped her seamers would make inroads when she declared with England nine-down, leaving South Africa with six overs to face. Laura Wolvaardt and Anneke Bosch got through them on 17 without loss and will resume in what’s forecast to be blue, windless conditions on day two.Maia Bouchier made a century in her first Test innings•ECB/Getty ImagesOn what has historically been referred to as the flattest track in the country, Knight opted to bat first and England made full use of the batter-friendly conditions. Four of their first five partnerships were worth more than fifty runs. Their third-wicket stand of 174 off 172 balls between Bouchier and Sciver-Brunt demonstrated the best of their attacking mindset, which saw them score at a shave under five runs an over for the first two sessions and left South Africa out of ideas.Wolvaardt used eight bowlers in the first session-and-a-half and all of them struggled with their disciplines. They conceded 47 fours and two sixes in the first two sessions (and 59 fours overall) and their ground fielding was poor, with several balls slipping through the hands or under the body.South Africa will look back on the two chances they had early on and identify them as their best to take a wicket. Marizanne Kapp appealed for an lbw against Tammy Beaumont on the second ball of the morning, which was given not out by debutant umpire Kerrin Klaaste. With no DRS, South Africa could not review. Beaumont was on four at the time and dismissed for 21 when she pulled Ayanda Hlubi to Sune Luus at midwwicket to give Hlubi her first Test wicket. Bouchier could have been gone soon after when she had a mid-pitch mix-up with Knight but Tumi Sekhukhune’s throw to the striker’s end was wide. Bouchier was on nine at the time.Sekhukhune, picked as the third seamer, was only introduced in the 26th over but immediately found some swing. She could have had Bouchier on her second ball, when the England opener swung wildly over square leg but Kapp misjudged the catch and the ball went for six to bring up Bouchier’s fifty. After she raced to 43 off the first 45 balls she faced, Bouchier spent 25 deliveries working toward her half-century and showed the patience required for this format. England went to lunch on 103 for 1.South Africa enjoyed some success soon after the interval when Sekhukhune dismissed Knight lbw with the third ball of the session, but then it was the Sciver-Brunt show. She opened her account with a gentle push that beat Mlaba at mid-on and raced away for four and the runs kept coming in boundaries. There was at least one in every over, and Bouchier took three off a Dercksen over that put her into the 80s. She entered the 90s with a six straight down the ground off Sekhukhune and reached her century five overs later when she slashed a wide Chloe Tryon delivery through third. While that was happening, Sciver-Brunt had galloped to a 46-ball half-century, the second fastest in Test cricket, and was on 68 off 66 balls by the time Bouchier got to a hundred. Sciver-Brunt continued to move through the gears and offered a half-chance when she inside-edged Nadine de Klerk to fine leg but otherwise looked in complete control. As much as South Africa offered up some poor deliveries on the pads, Sciver-Brunt manufactured some excellent shots, read the length well and raced to hundred with a quick two off Luus. It was her second Test hundred, after an unbeaten 169 not out in her previous Test against South Africa at Taunton in 2022.Nonkululeko Mlaba claimed a career-best four-for•Gallo Images/Getty ImagesBouchier was dismissed in the next over before tea when she lashed at a Mlaba ball that turned a touch. Luus, at slip, reacted quickly to take the catch above her head to the right. Another wicket came two overs after the break when Mlaba got one to grip, turn and take Danni Wyatt-Hodge’s edge. England were 299 for 4 in the 63rd over.South Africa continued with a post-tea squeeze and the next 15 overs only cost them 56 runs, at below four runs an over. Sciver-Brunt’s scoring rate slowed down dramatically. After her hundred, she scored 28 runs off the next 47 balls but was keen to keep things going. She was well outside her crease at the non-striker’s end when Amy Jones drove the ball back to Mlaba who deflected it onto the stumps. The run-out cameras (of which there are only two instead of the usual four) were not needed and Sciver-Brunt walked.Despite removing her, South Africa did not take the second new ball when it became available and kept the spinners in operation with the old ball. Mlaba found appreciable turn from the Loch Logan end and bowled Dean off the under-edge. In her next over, Amy Jones skied her in the region of mid-off, where Kapp had to judge the swirling chance well to give Mlaba a career-best fourth wicket. The second new ball was taken after 90 overs and given to Kapp, who had only bowled six overs in the first session. She was on the money from the get-go and bowled England’s second debutant, Ryana MacDonald-Gay, for 11 with a delivery that angled in and squirted past the inside edge. Hlubi bowled Ecclestone when she missed a flick. Lauren Bell faced three balls before Knight called the innings closed, 20 minutes before the scheduled end of the day.
Tottenham have opened talks to sign another player in a “separate deal from Savinho”, according to Fabrizio Romano on Tuesday, with the Lilywhites moving to support new manager Thomas Frank with late fresh faces before deadline day.
Spurs recently lost Son Heung-min to LAFC, who drew the curtain on his memorable 10-year stay at the club with an emotional farewell in Seoul, while star playmaker James Maddison is set to be absent for most of 2025/2026 with an ACL rupture.
FFC Spurs – James Maddison
This series of blows comes amid Dejan Kulusevski’s lengthy lay-off with a knee injury too, so the need for new attacking options is glaringly obvious.
Daniel Levy and technical director Johan Lange attempted to shore up Frank’s forward line with a £60 million deal for Nottingham Forest’s Morgan Gibbs-White last month, and the deal was so advanced that Spurs even had a medical booked in for the Englishman.
However, after Forest blocked the move, threatened legal action and convinced Gibbs-White to commit his future to the City Ground, Tottenham were forced back to square one in pursuit of a new number 10.
With just three weeks to go until the transfer window closes on September 1, Spurs have now upped the ante in search of proven attackers to fill the voids left by Kulusevski, Son and Maddison.
On Sunday evening, it was first reported by Romano that Tottenham opened club-to-club talks with Man City over a deal for Savinho, and the Brazil international winger is open to moving down south in what would be a statement deal.
The 21-year-old is expected to cost in excess of £45 million, but considering Savinho’s age, flair, pace, proven top-level experience and contribution going forward at Eastlands, this could be a very good value deal.
Savinho bagged 13 assists in all competitions for City last season, and was a key member of the Girona side that finished third in La Liga and briefly contended for the title in 2023/2024 – racking up 21 goal contributions.
His playing style can be likened to that of ex-City and Leicester star Riyad Mahrez, with the prospect of him joining Spurs a pretty tantalising one for supporters.
Now, in another bit of very promising news, Tottenham are in negotiations for Crystal Palace playmaker Eberechi Eze as well.
Tottenham open talks for Crystal Palace star Eberechi Eze
Frank’s side have been linked with a potential swoop for the 27-year-old in the last few days and earlier this summer, but discussions are reliably believed to be underway.
According to Romano via X on Tuesday morning, Spurs talks for Eze have reopened, with Levy and co trying to sign the England international again as they also work on a deal for Savinho simultaneously.
What’s more, Eze is also keen on a switch to N17, dealing a major worry to arch rivals Arsenal, who’ve been actively pursuing a deal for some time.
The former QPR star’s 14 goals and 11 assists in all competitions last term explain just half the story, with Eze spearheading Palace to their first ever major trophy by scoring their FA Cup final-winning strike at Wembley in May.
He is by far Palace’s standout attacking asset. Eze averaged more shots at goal, key passes and successful take-ons per 90 than any of his teammates in the top flight last season, with the CAM also able to fill Tottenham’s ‘locally trained’ Champions League quota in another potential boost.
There are plenty of reasons for Tottenham to move, and even more reasons for fans to clamor for his signature.
Chelsea’s summer spending spree is showing no sign of slowing down.
So far, the Blues have made eight new signings this summer, including bringing in Liam Delap, João Pedro, Jamie Gittens, Estêvão Willian and others.
However, they’ve still got plenty to do in the transfer market.
Right now, by our count, the Blues have 46 senior players on their books, but one could be on the way out, making way for another exciting young talent to arrive in West London.
Chelsea set to bolster their attacking options
As already alluded to, Chelsea are seeking to offload at least a dozen high-profile players in the next month or so, with Mike McGrath of the Telegraph reporting that Raheem Sterling could be on his way to Fulham.
One player who is closer to the exit door is João Félix who, according to David Ornstein and Simon Johnson of the Athletic, is set to join Saudi Pro League outfit Al-Nassr for around £26.2m, amid interest from boyhood club Benfica.
The Portuguese only joined Chelsea permanently from Atlético Madrid for £45m a year ago, but has scored just 11 goals in 40 appearances for the Blues across his two spells, spending the second half of last season on loan at AC Milan, thereby very much not in Enzo Maresca’s plans.
So, with Félix on his way out, Chelsea are on the cusp of bringing in a replacement, with journalist Ben Jacobs noting that they are “advancing talks” to sign Xavi Simons, with “terms now broadly in place” to bring him to England. Club-to-club talks are ongoing to find a full agreement over a fee.
James Olley of ESPN claims that the Blues are willing to spend around £50m, with Leipzig holding out for closer to £60m.
So, will he soon become the 15th Dutchman to call Stamford Bridge home, following in the footsteps of Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink, Ruud Gullit, Arjen Robben and others?
How Xavi Simons will improve Chelsea
Simons is certainly a highly-rated player, with Sultan Babajide of Breaking the Lines asserting that he is ‘destined for the top’, noting how he is ‘brilliant between the lines’.
Meantime, Bart Vlietstra of the Guardian believes there has always been ‘something irresistible’ about a player he labels a ‘precocious’ talent, while Jacek Kulig of Football Talent Scout agrees, describing him as a ‘fascinating player’.
Simons’ career breakthrough came at PSV Eindhoven, scoring 22 goals and registering 11 assists in just 48 outings for the Dutch giants, while he has also racked up 21 goals and 23 assists in 76 appearances since making the move to RB Leipzig.
So how does he compare to the player he’s set to replace in the Chelsea squad Félix? Let’s find out.

As the table outlines, ever since Simons became a regular first-team player at PSV, his statistics have been more impressive than those of Félix.
The Portuguese international’s £113m move to Atlético Madrid back in 2019, making him the fourth-most expensive player of all-time, has turned out to be one of football’s great what if moves, with Jack Lang of the Athletic noting that he is widely-regarded as having ‘wasted his talent’, never able to fit into the playing style or system at any of the clubs he’s featured for since Benfica.
Simons, in contrast, is a player on the way up, likely to get even better, so he could have an enormous impact at Chelsea, potentially elevating them to a level where they’re fighting for the Premier League title and Champions League supremacy once again.
Better signing than Simons: Chelsea could see bid accepted for £34m star
Chelsea will need to improve their defence this summer
Liverpool came into their pre-season clash with Milan full of optimism.
They’ve arguably had the best transfer window of any team this summer, namely signing Jeremie Frimpong, Milos Kerkez, Florian Wirtz and Hugo Ekitike.
Jeremy Frimpong and Arne Slot
Arne Slot’s team looks set to pack a firmer punch even than they did during their Premier League-winning campaign and things could get even better.
Indeed, the Reds are favourites to land Alexander Isak after the Swede made the hierarchy at Newcastle know that he’d like to explore an exit this summer.
That positivity, however, was not enough to carry them to a win over Milan who defeated Slot’s side 4-2.
Work to do then, largely at the back where options look sparse centrally for Liverpool. Still, they seem intent to taking steps to add more to the forward line.
Who could replace Nunez and Diaz at Liverpool
Any moves Liverpool complete between now and the end of the summer are likely to depend on what happens to Darwin Nunez and Luis Diaz.
It’s largely been expected that the former takes his leave but where he ends up feels a little uncertain right now. As for Diaz, his future will be in Munich with Bayern having agreed to sign the Colombian winger for a fee of around £65m.
Liverpool's Cody Gakpo and Luis Diaz
Should Nunez leave alongside Diaz, then the Reds could turn their attention to a record-breaking bid for Isak.
Yet, with Ekitike already through the door, signing an out-and-out replacement for Diaz would make a great deal more sense.
That’s where Liverpool’s wide options come into the equation. Another Toon star in the form of Anthony Gordon has been linked but that feels unlikely.
What’s more likely is concluding a deal for Real Madrid winger Rodrygo. That’s according to reports in Spain.
Reports a few weeks ago noted that Liverpool had begun talks to sign the Brazilian and now they are said to be leading the race to sign him.
Rodrygo stats
It’s alleged that Arsenal are now out of the race for the Madrid star, making the Reds firm favourites. That being said, they will have to sell in order to find a move for a player being valued at around £87m.
That’s certainly a lot of money, but for a player compared to Wirtz, it’s easy to see why they’ve cast their eyes in the direction of the 24-year-old.
How Rodrygo compares to Florian Wirtz
Described as the “best midfielder in the world” by former Leverkusen striker Patrick Helmes, it was some coup to get Wirtz to Anfield this summer.
Many think the classic number 10 has died out but in Wirtz, you sense Liverpool have signed the heir to Kevin De Bruyne’s throne.
He’s a creative machine, having assisted 15 goals last season, but he’s also more than competent in front of goal, netting 16 times in all competitions.
Not just capable of playing through the middle, Wirtz has also found a home in wide areas, just like Rodrygo.
Real Madrid's Rodrygo
The Brazilian isn’t much of a number 10, however, like Wirtz, he’s played as a false 9 and out wide. His statistical data is also very similar.
Indeed, according to FBref, the German is the seventh-most similar attacking midfielder and winger to Rodrygo in Europe’s top five leagues over the last year. Here’s why.

While Wirtz’s output is supremely better – Rodrygo scored 14 and assisted 11 in all completions – their data was comparable in other areas.
Looking at the numbers, it was actually the Real winger who bettered Wirtz for key passes per 90 minutes, although only marginally.
In the dribbling department, their ability to manipulate the ball in tight areas and advance beyond the defence is uncanny.
They’re dazzling with possession at their feet, something that’s backed up by the fact that they both average over five progressive carries per 90.
Teammates clearly recognise that too, as they receive an identical number of progressive passes, underlining their ability to be given the ball between the lines where they can impact proceedings in the final third.
While Rodrygo did go 17 games without a goal at one stage in 2024/25, his ability is obvious and if you’re a player earning comparisons to Wirtz, it’s clear you’re a very talented footballer. After all, he is a “world-class superstar” in the words of Luka Modric.
For Liverpool, this would be a great move if Diaz departs.
New Fabinho: Liverpool prepare bid for "one of the best DMs on the planet"
Liverpool are looking at signing a new defensive midfielder this summer.
