New Deulofeu: Everton enter race to sign "immense" £30m O'Brien upgrade

Everton manager David Moyes has responded to his opening-day defeat at the hands of newly-promoted Leeds United in the Premier League by striking a deal for a top transfer target.

Yes, a £40m deal has been agreed for Southampton’s Tyler Dibling, the 19-year-old attacking midfielder who has been described as a “world-class talent” by former Saints academy manager Andy Goldie.

Tyler Dibling

It fixes a gaping hole on the Toffees’ attacking right flank, though there remains a desperate need for greater depth, if Moyes is to pull it all together and ensure his side challenge for a place at the higher end of the league table.

In particular, Everton need a right-back.

Everton pushing to sign new right-back

Everton released the 40-year-old Ashley Young at the end of his contract last season, retaining club legened Seamus Coleman. However, the skipper is into the twilight of his career, and so Jake O’Brien continued to deputise as a right-back at Elland Road.

Nathan Patterson, after all, was sidelined through injury once again.

Jake O'Brien in action for Everton

O’Brien, 24, is a talented, tenacious defender, but he’s naturally a centre-back, and so it’s clear that Everton need to make a signing who could add a bit more dynamism and impetus to the side.

Well, according to Spanish outlet Sport, Barcelona are preparing for the departure of young prospect Hector Fort, with the 19-year-old at the centre of a loan approach from West Ham United.

The report continues to suggest that the Premier League is the likely destination for the up-and-comer and that other teams, such as Everton, remain in the running.

Just last summer, Barca rejected an offer north of £30m so it would not be a surprise if the Toffees had to pay big to secure his services.

What Hector Fort would bring to Everton

Fort, a versatile full-back, would join a list of players to have made the move from La Blaugrana to the blue half of Merseyside, but his ability to play across both flanks, his technical gifts and his ball-playing acumen suggest he could become Everton’s next version of cult hero Gerard Deulofeu.

Swiftly asserting himself as he joined Everton from Barcelona on loan for the 2013/14 season, Deulofeu notched eight goal contributions across 29 matches for the club, with the manager at the time, Roberto Martinez, going on to hail him as a “real diamond” of a player.

He spent two-and-a-half years at Goodison Park, all told, playing with a point to prove, and though he ebbed and flowed, none can contest the winger’s skilful style.

The same could be attributed to Fort, who, hailed for his “immense” talent by journalist Antonio Mango, would be determined to showcase his qualities and unleash some of his Catalonian flair on the Premier League, be that at right-back or on the left.

As per FBref, Fort ranks among the top 1% of positional peers across Europe’s top five leagues for pass completion, the top 2% for passes attempted, the top 26% for shot-creating actions and the top 14% for ball recoveries per 90.

In La Liga, he might have only featured 17 times last term, but he played his part in winning the title, with Sofascore recording that the teenage talent completed 92% of his passes and avoided making a single error, bespeaking his cultured style even at this stage of his career.

Fort would certainly present Everton with a welcome contrast on the right side of defence, and with a point to prove on a short-term deal, the Spaniard might even find himself enjoying the same success as Deulofeu when his 31-year-old compatriot was in his pomp.

And as a natural right-back, he would surely mark an upgrade on O’Brien too, allowing the Irishman to shift into his own natural berth and enrich the dynamism and fluency that Moyes is trying to achieve.

Club "want to sell" £50m forward to Tottenham, Thomas Frank also keen

Tottenham manager Thomas Frank unceremoniously missed out on his second playmaker of the summer on Wednesday evening, so he is in dire need of some good news when it comes to recruitment.

Despite Spurs’ very advanced talks for Eberechi Eze, Arsenal swooped in to hijack Daniel Levy’s negotiations after Kai Havertz’s injury, and they swiftly shook hands on a deal with Palace overnight.

Tottenham were believed to have a verbal pact in place with Palace and agreed personal terms with Eze, so it looked like a matter of time before the north Londoners welcomed him to N17.

However, the decision ultimately came down to Eze, as both Spurs and Arsenal were prepared to meet Palace’s demands at club level.

The England international chose Arsenal due to his long-standing connection with them through his boyhood academy years at the club (Alasdair Gold), with Frank and Levy now back to square one in their pursuit of a number 10.

They’ve been in this position before this summer, with Morgan Gibbs-White also failing to seal what was once a very advanced move to Tottenham after Nottingham Forest blocked the deal.

With Spurs’ mission to sign a James Maddison replacement now set to continue with just 12 days to go until the transfer deadline on September 1, the Lilywhites also have other positions they need to reinforce.

Frank believes that Tottenham actually need two number 10s after Maddison’s long-term injury, but whether the Dane gets his wish is another matter.

Elsewhere, it is reliably reported that Spurs also want to sign a new winger and centre-back (Michael Bridge).

Brentford captain Nathan Collins and Bayer Leverkusen’s Piero Hincapie are among Tottenham’s defensive targets, while Man City winger Savinho is still being chased by Spurs despite Pep Guardiola’s side blocking the deal as of now (Fabrizio Romano).

Believe it or not, Brentford striker Yoane Wissa may also remain a possibility too.

Brentford "want to sell" Yoane Wissa to Tottenham as they delay Newcastle deal

According to The Mail’s Craig Hope, there is a feeling behind-the-scenes that the Bees are delaying their deal with Newcastle, having just rejected a second bid for the Congolese, because Brentford “want to sell” Wissa to Tottenham instead – due to their relationship with Frank.

The Dane would also be keen on signing his ex-star. However, any move for Wissa is dependent on revitalised centre-forward Richarlison leaving and a club meeting his minimum £50m valuation.

The Brazilian was actually offered as a makeweight in talks for Eze, as per this report, but that now won’t be happening.

Perhaps if they can offer out Richarlison in part-exchange for another playmaker, the door could reopen for Wissa, but for now, the 29-year-old has his “heart set” on a move to St. James’ Park.

He would be an excellent replacement for Richarlison, scoring 19 goals in the Premier League last season and earning plenty of praise from Frank in the past.

Perfect for Gibbs-White: Forest planning bid to sign £22m star after McAtee

Will Nottingham Forest continue to be busy in the transfer market, ahead of their Premier League opener against Brentford on Sunday?

So far, the Garibaldi Reds have signed goalkeeper Angus Gunn, Brazilian duo Igor Jesus and Jair Cunha, both from Botafogo, and, most recently and most excitingly, winger Dan Ndoye from Bologna, costing a reported fee of £34m.

Having finished seventh last season, Nuno Espírito Santo’s side are preparing for a European campaign, the first time Forest have competed on the continent in 30 years, meaning squad depth will be key, so are they set to bolster their midfield options further?

Nottingham Forest targeting midfield reinforcements

Despite making four new additions, the best piece of business Nottingham Forest have done this summer, without question, is keeping hold of Morgan Gibbs-White.

The 25 year old appeared destined to depart when Tottenham triggered his £60m release clause, but Spurs were ultimately left ‘stunned’ when the midfielder signed a new three-year contract instead, news that came completely out of the blue.

Nottingham Forest's MorganGibbs-Whitereacts after the match

This is a serious statement of intent from Forest, able to keep hold of their best player, so will they now bolster their midfield options to help get the best out of Gibbs-White?

Well, amid talk that they are on the verge of signing James McAtee from Manchester City, another top midfielder could be on their way to Nottingham.

According to a report by TEAMtalk, Nottingham Forest are ‘plotting’ a move to sign Yunus Musah from AC Milan, adding that they’re ‘considering making a bid’ for the United States international, valued at around £22m.

The Rossoneri have reappointed Massimiliano Allegri as head coach this summer, following a catastrophic campaign that saw them finish eighth in Serie A, failing to qualify for any European competition.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

During Il Diavolo’s pre-season tour of Asia last month, newly-hired sporting director Igli Tare stated that “I consider Musah an excellent player, but we are looking for profiles with characteristics that fit the [Allegri] project”, which very much sounds like they’re open to a sale.

So, could the 22-year-old soon swap San Siro for the City Ground?

What Nottingham Forest fans should expect from Yunus Musah

Born in New York City, Musah’s family moved to London when he was just nine years old, subsequently spending seven years in Arsenal’s Hale End academy, before moving to Valencia at the age of 16.

After starting out in los Murciélagos’ B team, he made his senior debut a year after arriving, accumulating 108 appearances for los Che.

His performances caught AC Milan’s attention, joining the Italian giants for a reported fee of £17m two summers ago, featuring 80 times across two seasons for the Rossoneri, albeit he only started 19 Serie A matches last time round.

Musah has also won 47 caps for the United States, although his importance has diminished since the appointment of Mauricio Pochettino last year, with Taylor Rockwell of Total Soccer Show noting that he needs to be starting games regularly at club level as a central midfielder if he harbours realistic hopes of being an important figure at the World Cup.

Well, still only 22 years old, Musah certainly could do so at a high level, with Greg O’Keeffe of the Athletic labelling him an “exciting midfield talent”.

Robbie Dunne of Opta’s the Analyst agrees, asserting that he is ‘immensely talented’ and capable of carrying out any instructions, given that he is able to ‘cover lots of ground quickly’, hence why coaches often shunt him out-wide, even though he is best utilised centrally, with ball-carrying his ‘greatest strength’.

YunusMusahof the U.S. in action with England's Jude Bellingham

Meantime, Mario Husillos Jr. of Total Football Analysis notes that his ‘influence can be seen all across the pitch when deployed in a central role, thereby given license to ‘get close to the defenders to help in the buildup’.

This certainly sounds as though Musah would be the hard-working, hard-running type of defensive midfielder who would be able to get the best out of Gibbs-White, so let’s compare their respective statistics last season.

The table first and foremost emphasises Musah’s lack of importance at AC Milan, given that he actually made two more appearances than Gibbs-White across all competitions last season, but accumulated almost 1000 fewer minutes.

On top of this, the table outlines why the duo could form an excellent partnership in midfield.

The England international is the creator in chief, hence why his numbers when it comes to goals, assists, shots and chances created are all exponentially higher.

The American, on the other hand, is more secure in possession, completing a higher percentage of his passes, while posting better defensive numbers, most notably in terms of tackles.

At the base of Nottingham Forest’s midfield, there is a spot up for grabs alongside Elliot Anderson, so Musah could be the man for that position, allowing Gibbs-White, deployed as a number ten, to flourish for Nuno’s team.

Late bid made: West Ham pushing to seal late signing who'd be the new Rice

With seven goals conceded, one goal scored and no points on the board, it would be fair to say that West Ham United’s Premier League season has got off to just about the worst start possible.

Graham Potter’s side looked utterly hopeless on Friday night, were played through with ease and are in desperate need of some serious steel in the middle of the park, someone like Declan Rice.

While things didn’t always go his way in East London, the former Hammers captain was determination personified, and if he were still in the side, we do not doubt that the situation would be far better at present.

Fortunately, while the Englishman is plying his trade elsewhere in the capital, it now looks like West Ham are eyeing a late move for someone who could be their new Rice.

West Ham target their new Declan Rice

West Ham’s midfield situation was not great heading into the summer, and in recent weeks it has only got worse.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

After a couple of rather uninspiring campaigns, Mexican international Edson Alvarez has left the club to join Fenerbahçe on a season-long loan with an option to buy.

The departure of the former Ajax star has left an already leggy-looking midfield in even greater need of reinforcement, specifically with younger, more energetic players.

Fortunately, the club seem to have realised the same thing, as they appear to have identified the perfect recruit, someone who could be their new Rice.

At least that is according to a recent report from Foot Mercato, which has claimed West Ham are still very interested in Soungoutou Magassa.

The report reaffirms previous claims that the Hammers made an offer of around €16m for the Frenchman, about £14m, but that Nottingham Forest have made an even better offer of €17m, about £15m, and that Atalanta are now interested as well.

It looks like the Irons are going to have something of a battle on their hands to land the AS Monaco ace, but he seems like he’d be worth it, especially as he could be their new Rice.

Why Magassa could be West Ham's new Rice

Now, while fans obviously shouldn’t expect Magassa to be on the same level as Rice to begin with, there are some apparent similarities between the two.

Paris St Germain's Ousmane Dembele in action with AS Monaco's SoungoutouMagassa

The first is that, like the former West Ham captain, the young Frenchman first started as an impressive centre-back, before slowly moving up the pitch and finding his best position at the base of midfield, as a six.

Therefore, if he does end up making the move to East London before the window slams shut next week, he’d be doing so to fill in where the Englishman thrived during his time at the club.

However, the similarities go deeper than just a position, as, just like the former Irons star, the tremendously “effortlessly” brilliant Monaco ace, as dubbed by respected analyst Ben Mattinson, is both a monstrous presence in the midfield and a technician with the ball.

We can clearly see these two parts of his game when examining some of his outstanding underlying numbers.

Finally, despite still being so young, Mattinson has described the midfielder as being “composed when under pressure” and someone who has a “forward-thinking mindset,” which sounds an awful lot like the former Hammers star.

Ultimately, West Ham need young and dynamic midfield reinforcements this summer, and even though he’s not reached his full potential just yet, Magassa looks like he’d be the perfect addition, especially as he could be the club’s next Rice.

Everton now considering making offer for "incredible" £13m La Liga defender

Everton are now believed to be interested in completing the signing of a highly rated Spanish defender during the summer transfer window.

Moyes positive after Everton draw with Man Utd

The Blues continued their pre-season with a 2-2 draw against Manchester United on Sunday night, as they prepare for the new Premier League season. Manager David Moyes has been slightly downbeat of late, saying Everton are “not ready” as the 2025/26 campaign approaches, but he was in more positive spirits after the United game.

“I’m more pleased with tonight’s game than I was with the other games because we got something from it.” But it wasn’t so much the result, it was more the performance was much more encouraging. And look, to be fair, we weren’t probably ready in the first two games regarding players fit and available for the games.

“But we knew that tonight we were a bit closer to something which looked like an Everton team. The other games, we’ve not really looked that way. So, yes, much happier tonight.”

Everton still need new signings before the summer transfer window closes, though, and it looks as though they are targeting a player in a key area.

Everton considering offer for £13m Juanlu

According to a new report from TEAMtalk, Everton are “considering” tabling an offer for Sevilla right-back Juanlu Sanchez this summer, with his current club willing to allow him to leave.

The Spaniard is valued at around £13m, and it is claimed that Moyes is now “prioritising the signing of a new right-back following the departure of Ashley Young” at the end of last season.

Juanlu has the potential to be just what Everton are looking for at right-back this summer, having been an ageing area of the pitch in recent years, with Ashley Young and Seamus Coleman limited there. The Sevilla ace is an exciting young player who won the gold medal for Spain at last summer’s Olympics, also being lauded by Garcia Pimienta.

“He has played as an inside midfielder [before], we were short on space in midfield due to Saul [Niguez]’s suspension and [Albert Sambi] Lokonga’s injury. I spoke to him, I knew he could do well in that position. Juanlu has an incredible present and a better future.”

Juanlu has already won four caps for Spain, scoring once for his country in that time, while 74 appearances for Sevilla by the age of 21 is already an impressive return, showing that he can shine in one of Europe’s top leagues.

The youngster would add defensive nous and attacking quality to Everton’s side, giving Moyes much-needed youth at right-back into the future, with his peak still likely to be a number of years away, too.

Marc-Andre ter Stegen warned he has 'no chance' of Barcelona resurrection due to 'merciless' treatment as goalkeeper urged to find a new club

Former Barcelona player Bernd Schuster has warned Marc-Andre ter Stegen to find a new club if he wants to keep his Germany spot for the 2026 World Cup. Schuster believes the goalkeeper has 'no chance' of reviving his career at Camp Nou given the club’s history of moving on from players who fall out of favour.

  • Ter Stegen stuck in the wilderness at Barcelona

The relationship between Barcelona and Ter Stegen fell apart over the summer as the 33-year-old was told he would be dropped to third choice under coach Hansi Flick in the new season. Due to the arrival of Joan Garcia, the new undisputed starter, from Espanyol and the re-signing of Wojciech Szczesny, the club hoped to convince Ter Stegen to leave in an attempt to get his salary off their books.

The tension reached its peak when Ter Stegen, after requiring surgery on a back injury, refused to sign off on the medical report that would confirm to La Liga that he would be out for a lengthy period, which would allow Barcelona to use a large proportion of his salary to cover Garcia's, meaning he could be registered in time for their first game of the season. The German's refusal sparked disciplinary action as he was temporarily stripped of his captaincy, though he eventually relented and granted approval for the report to be sent to La Liga.

Due to the injury, the ex-Borussia Monchengladbach star is not expected to return to training for some time, but he is not expected to feature for the Catalan club regardless of his fitness. The shot stopper is reluctant to leave Barcelona after living there for 11 years, but a lack of playing time will likely result in him being left out of the Germany squad for the World Cup. National team coach Julian Nagelsmann has made it clear that he will only start at the tournament if he plays consistently for his club, and ex-Barca and Germany Schuster has warned a move is an absolute necessity.

  • Schuster believes Barcelona will not give Ter Stegen another chance

He told : “Since it’s well known how ruthless Barca can be with players they no longer need, if I were him, I’d look for a new club in the winter.

"Flick has clearly put his trust in new signing Joan Garcia and Wojciech Szczesny as the backup. Ter Stegen won’t be given another chance.

"In my opinion, his new club doesn't have to be an absolute top club. An ambitious Bundesliga club where he plays regularly would also be good. Because that's what he absolutely needs – otherwise, I can well imagine the national coach bringing Manuel Neuer back into the Germany goal for the 2026 World Cup."

Time running out for Germany goalkeeper

With less than a year until the 2026 World Cup, time is running out for the Barcelona veteran. Unless he finds regular playing time soon, he risks losing the Germany No.1 spot he has long been chasing but could never fully claim with Manuel Neuer in the picture. And now, with the Bayern Munich veteran even being urged to return, the pressure is only mounting.
