Chelsea in "direct contact" with "super boss" to discuss move for £60m star

Chelsea have now been in “direct contact” with a club’s “super boss” to discuss a move for a “fascinating” new signing in the final days of the market.

Blues' transfer activity hinges on outgoings

After a frantic start to the summer transfer window, there has been little recent activity at Stamford Bridge, with Todd Boehly focused on getting current players off the books before being able to bring in more new signings.

That has been the case for quite some time, with Fabrizio Romano nearly two weeks ago revealing the Blues are looking to sell both Christopher Nkunku and Nicolas Jackson before bringing in two new attackers.

Aston Villa have subsequently made Jackson their top target, while there is no shortage of interest in Nkunku, with Bayern Munich and Newcastle United being named as potential suitors.

Consequently, Enzo Maresca’s side should have little trouble sealing the departures of the two forwards, which would create space in the squad for both RB Leipzig’s Xavi Simons and Manchester United’s Alejandro Garnacho.

According to an update from Sky Sports reporter Florian Plettenberg on X, Chelsea have recently engaged in fresh talks over a deal for Simons, having been in “direct contact” with RB Leipzig “super boss” Oliver Mintzlaff.

The Blues will “remain keen” on signing the Leipzig maestro right up until deadline day, and he is said to have agreed a deal until 2031, but the west Londoners are still waiting to finalize the sales of Jackson and Nkunku before advancing the deal any further.

"Fascinating" Simons could excel at Stamford Bridge

Given his fantastic goal and assist record in the Bundesliga, the Dutchman received high praise from scout Jacek Kulig during the 2024/25 campaign.

Not only that, but the RB Leipzig star, who is expected to cost £60m, has been lauded by former Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel, who also revealed what he thinks the 22-year-old’s best position is.

RB Leipzig'sXaviSimonsreacts after the match

Tuchel said: “I think his best position is half winger, half 10, so he can be free. He is technically strong, calm with the ball, and very good in front of goal.”

With Nkunku scoring just three Premier League goals last season, and Jackson massively underperforming his xG over the past year, Chelsea could do with a new attacker who is clinical in front of goal, and Tuchel seems to believe Simons fits the bill.

Five Premier League stars endure flight chaos as cracked plane forced to make emergency landing

Five Premier League players – including Alex Iwobi and Calvin Bassey – were among those to endure flight chaos after jetting out of Nigeria's latest 2026 World Cup qualifier. There was midair mayhem during that journey as a cracked windscreen forced the plane that the Super Eagles were travelling on to make an emergency landing. Said trip was eventually completed some 12 hours later than initially planned.

Why Nigerian plane was forced into unscheduled pitstop

The Nigeria squad was heading home after playing out a qualification clash in Polokwane, South Africa. They emerged triumphant in that contest, with a 2-1 victory being picked up against Lesotho. A chartered ValueJet Airline – the same carrier that had taken the team to South America – was used for the return journey.

Once it emerged that damage had been suffered to the plane’s windscreen, those on board were left with no choice but to revise their plans. The jet in question had stopped in the Angolan capital of Luanda for refuelling. After being in the air for a further 25 minutes, it emerged that an unscheduled pitstop would need to be taken. The plane returned to Luanda and landed safely.

AdvertisementHow Nigeria were able to resolve the issue

The Nigeria Football Federation confirmed that a delay had been suffered en route to Uyo, where the Super Eagles are due to face Benin on Tuesday. Government officials, including the president's chief of staff, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Minister of Aviation were able to secure permission for another airline to fly out from Lagos and collect the team.

A statement from the NFF read: "The ValueJet Airline and the relevant Federal Government of Nigeria authorities are working assiduously to get the necessary overflying and landing permits for another aircraft to fly from Lagos, pick the delegation in Luanda, and fly them to Uyo."

The replacement plane eventually completed the journey on Sunday morning, with almost 12 hours of disruption being brought to a close. Team media officer Promise Efoghe said in a statement issued to the media: "Finally, Super Eagles arrive in Uyo, Akwa Ibom. The team touched down at 8.05 am Sunday morning."

Nigeria’s squad includes five players from the Premier League. They are Iwobi, Bassey and Samuel Chukwueze of Fulham, Brentford’s Frank Onyeka and Tolu Arokodare of Wolves. Galatasaray striker Victor Osimhen and Atalanta forward Ademola Lookman are among the other star names in the Super Eagles’ ranks. They currently sit third in their World Cup qualification group, three points behind table-topping Benin and one adrift of South Africa in an ongoing bid to secure a play-off spot.

Similar issues for Newcastle's Brazilian duo

Nigeria are not the first team to endure airplane chaos during the latest international break. Newcastle United duo Bruno Guimaraes and Joelinton suffered similar issues when attempting to link up with the Brazil squad.

Their aircraft was also forced to turn around due to a broken window. They were heading out to Seoul for a friendly date with South Korea. The Selecao are also taking in a meeting with Japan during their time in the Far East. Guimaraes and Joelinton both arrived in time for the first of those fixtures.

They did, however, spend more time in Amsterdam than they had planned before landing in Asia. They are said to have spent around 12 hours in the air after leaving an airport in the Netherlands and returning to it once a problem was identified.

Getty Images SportQuestions asked of travel in international windows

The Brazilian football authorities scrambled to make alternative arrangements, with direct flights and those with potential connections explored. Said journey was eventually completed, with Guimaraes playing 79 minutes and recording an assist in a 5-0 win over South Korea.

Joelinton saw no game time, meaning that he will be desperate to figure against Japan on Tuesday. Whatever happens, the Magpies duo will have taken in around 10,000 miles of travel before returning to England for a Premier League game with Brighton on October 18 – with more questions being asked of the demands being placed on international performers in 2025 and the windows that are packed into three months early in domestic club campaigns.

"Whether you like it or not" – Martin demands "perspective" after Rangers defeat

Russell Martin retains belief that Rangers will come good in the long run after beginning their Europa League campaign with a 1-0 Ibrox defeat to Genk.

Gers midfielder Mohamed Diomande was shown a straight red card in the 41st minute for his challenge on Zakaria El Ouahdi. In added time in the first half, Gers keeper Jack Butland saved a penalty from former Celtic striker Oh Hyeon-gyu, but the South Korean eventually opened the scoring in the 55th minute and it proved to be the winner.

Martin, who had no complaints about the red card, has won four times in 14 games since he took over in the summer and the remaining fans in the crowd of 37,898 – the lowest in a European game at Ibrox since Rangers came back to the top flight – chanted against him at the final whistle.

When asked what gave him continuing confidence, he said: “Well, the way the players train, the way they stick together in the second half, the feeling inside the training ground, so I can’t control anything else apart from that. We will work, learn from tonight.

“Have a bit of perspective on tonight and how difficult it was after the red card. Because whether you like it or not, it changes a lot when you are down to 10 men for so long in a game in a European tie.“So, learn from it, especially the first half, where we hurt ourselves a little bit and got trapped too much.

Fewer touches than Butland: Rangers man was just as bad as Diomande vs Genk

Rangers began their Europa League campaign with a 1-0 defeat to Genk, but the sent off Mohamed Diomandé as not the only man to blame for this defeat.

ByBen Gray Sep 26, 2025

“And then get ready to prepare and perform and win on Sunday. I’m disappointed we lose. The red card changed the game a lot. I was looking forward to getting to half-time. We had a few key points across to help the performance.

“We started fine, we had a bit of control and then we had a 10-minute spell where Genk got on top because we just didn’t look after the ball anywhere near well enough, forced it a little bit, and then we defended too deep because we didn’t take care of each other with the ball.

“And then I thought we rode that out and it looked like we were getting a bit of control back. Then Dio gets sent off, so it’s frustrating for us, really frustrating. I asked them to be really aggressive and not just defend for 45 minutes to try and get a draw and get a point, so I thought we looked a threat.

“And they had a couple of moments but they didn’t cut us open. It wasn’t like we were defending relentlessly and we had a couple of moments ourselves. So I’m frustrated. The red card changes a lot but I’m proud of the effort in the second half.

Genk boss heaps praise on "special" Rangers fans

Genk boss Thorsten Fink was pleased to leave Ibrox with a 1-0 win and recalled playing at the Govan stadium for Bayern Munich in 1999, when the two sides drew 1-1 in a Champions League group game.

He said: “I was happy to see the crowd today and the fans in the stadium. I was here in 1999. I didn’t play, but I was on the bench. Rangers drew 1-1 with Bayern Munich.

“They played a very good game against us. I have been a coach for a long time, but it was my first time coming here as a coach so it is a nice victory for me.

“There is always a good atmosphere here. They supported their team from what I saw. When I was here with Bayern Munich there were more fans, 52,000 I think.“They are special, special fans. The atmosphere in 1999 I will never forget. Today the fans were good as well. I was happy to be here.”

MI limit CSK to 176 despite Dube, Jadeja fifties

Mumbai Indians (MI) restricted Chennai Super Kings (CSK) to 176 in an innings that largely remained intent-less at the Wankhede. In the last match on this pitch, RCB scored 221 and had to work hard to defend it. That CSK got to a respectable total was down to Shivam Dube and Ravindra Jadeja targeting certain pockets of the innings, and the 17-year-old Ayush Mhatre’s eye-catching debut.Ashwani Kumar and Trent Boult went for 85 runs in six overs between them. The other 14 overs, led by Jasprit Bumrah and Mitchell Santner, produced just 91 runs. There was a 27-ball period in the middle overs when not only was a boundary not hit, but there was not even an attempt made to hit one. Then, even after Dube broke free with a 30-ball fifty, MS Dhoni and Ravindra Jadeja presented plum match-ups to Bumrah and Santner, who went through overs 17 and 18 without a boundary.Dhoni’s dismissal in the 19th over to Bumrah resulted in the return of Boult for the final over – otherwise MI could have bowled Santner – and Jadeja could finally get a couple of big hits in to reach his half-century and unfurl the sword celebration.Hardik Pandya, MI’s leading wicket-taker this IPL, bowled only two overs for only 13 runs. He could have perhaps bowled at least one of the overs bowled by Ashwani and Boult. However, this was the only blemish on a night of excellent planning and execution for MI, which began with Deepak Chahar bowling four overs in a row at the top and ending with the wicket of Mhatre with a slower legcutter after the debutant had given CSK the only impetus in the powerplay for 32 off 15.Santner then tied down Shaik Rasheed and Jadeja before the arrival of Dube meant he was taken off with two left-hand batters at the wicket. Especially when one ofn them was Dube, whose slow start again underlined the lack of batting power in the CSK line-up.

Did RR choose the wrong batters for the Super Over? Bishop and Pujara think so

Both of them say they would have preferred Nitish Rana, who scored 51 off 28 in regular time, as one of the Super Over batters

Pujara surprised by RR’s Super Over line-up

Did Rajasthan Royals (RR) get their choice of batters wrong in the Super Over against Delhi Capitals (DC) in Delhi? After Mitchell Starc tied the game for DC in regular time, RR sent in Shimron Hetmyer and Riyan Parag – a left-right combination – for the Super Over, with Yashasvi Jaiswal as the third batter. Starc once again took the ball for DC and conceded only 11, with Parag and Jaiswal run out on the fourth and fifth deliveries, respectively. KL Rahul and Tristan Stubbs needed just four balls to chase it down against Sandeep Sharma.Could RR have sent in Nitish Rana, who scored 51 off 28 in the regular time? Reverse in fast forward – Starc's three overs of yorker mayhem

“I think Nitish should have been there in those three,” Pujara said on ESPNcricinfo TimeOut. “But I don’t know whether he should have started. I would want Jaiswal to start because of the way he bats against Mitchell Starc – his record [against Starc] has been phenomenal across formats [26 runs from 15 balls without a dismissal in T20s and 133 from 203 with three dismissals in Tests].”I know it was the Super Over and Starc was just trying to execute his yorkers, but there’s a psychological advantage. If Yashasvi had faced a few balls, then Starc would have been under some pressure.”Bishop, Pujara’s co-panellist on the show, agreed. “I like Jaiswal at the top there, but I am biased towards Nitish Rana as well,” he said. “I would not mind Rana’s silky skill to come in there, not necessarily raw power.”DC captain Axar Patel was surprised to see Hetmyer come out too. “Hetmyer wasn’t able to connect in the match either,” Axar said after the game. “So I felt Jaiswal and Riyan would come out. But it worked out well for us, whoever they sent out.”2:32

Are RR overdoing the left-right combination?

When Rana himself was asked about it, he defended the team management’s decision.”The team management, the captain, and senior players decide it and I think it was a correct decision,” he said at the post-match press conference. “Had Hetmyer hit two sixes, this question would not have been there. Hetmyer is our finisher and he has delivered for us in the past.”I think we were one big shot short. We were targeting 15 runs in the Super Over because we know if you have 15 runs and you get one wicket, there’s a chance because then the batting team is under pressure. I think credit goes to Starc. We saw this type of death bowling in the IPL after a long time.”With the ball, RR preferred Sandeep over Jofra Archer, who famously bowled the Super Over in the 2019 ODI World Cup final.”Sandy has bowled such overs for us previously,” Rana said, “and I think he was most likely the best bowler we had for this situation.”

Mata 2.0: Maresca must bench Neto & unleash Chelsea's "world-class" star

It’s certainly not panic stations just yet, but things are not going to plan for Chelsea so far this season.

Enzo Maresca’s side were held to a draw by Crystal Palace in their Premier League opener, drew away to Brentford last weekend, and then lost at the hands of Bayern Munich on Wednesday night.

Now, there is no shame in losing to the German giants, especially given the inexperience in this Blues squad, but the lack of genuine threat from the West Londoners was worrying.

So, to ensure they have a better chance of beating Manchester United this afternoon, Maresca should drop the underperforming Pedro Neto for someone who could be something of a new Juan Mata for Chelsea.

Neto's poor start to the season

Firstly, it is worth noting that Neto is an undeniably talented player, and when he is on form, he is a nightmare for defenders.

Chalkboard

Football FanCast’s Chalkboard series presents a tactical discussion from around the global game.

However, what is equally true is the fact that he’s started this season slowly and, as things stand, is not offering very much to the team.

For example, Joao Pedro has already scored twice and provided three assists, Enzo Fernández has produced three goal involvements and Cole Palmer, who has been out injured, already has two goals in his last two appearances.

In contrast, the former Wolverhampton Wanderers star has scored just one goal thus far, and not to diminish his efforts, but that came against West Ham United, who are looking like serious relegation candidates this season.

Moreover, against Bayern, he wasn’t even ineffective; he was actually making things worse for the team, losing the ball nine times despite taking just 25 touches.

In all, while Pedro is a talented player and could still have an important role to play in Chelsea’s season, he should be dropped for the game today, especially as there is someone ready to replace him, someone who could be something of a new Mata.

Chelsea's new Mata who should replace Pedro

While some may argue the closest thing to a new Mata in this Chelsea side is Palmer, the player we are talking about is the incredibly exciting Estevao.

Now, while it is undoubtedly true that the Brazilian is primarily a winger and the Spaniard an attacking midfielder, people often forget that the former Blues star actually spent plenty of time out wide during his time in West London.

In fact, the 37 appearances he made off the left, combined with the 26 he made off the right almost match the 67 he made as a ten.

However, while there is actually minor positional similarity between the two players, that is not the basis of this comparison.

Instead, it’s that, when at his best, the 37-year-old was capable of making something happen out of nothing, and was an incredibly gifted attacking force.

For example, in 135 appearances for the Pensioners, totalling 10118 minutes, the Burgos-born maestro managed to score 33 goals and provide 53 assists.

In other words, the 41-capped icon averaged a goal involvement every 1.56 games, or every 117.65 minutes, which is the sort of creativity the team need now, and something Estevao may be able to provide in the future.

Granted, he’s probably not going to put up numbers like that this season, but with people like respected analyst Ben Mattinson calling him a “future Ballon d’Or winner”, there is no reason to think he won’t get there.

In fact, we have already seen what he’s capable of this season, as following a mazy run in the West Ham game, he provided his first competitive assist in blue for Pedro.

On top of having the potential to be as good as the former United star, he’s also a left-footer and, by watching his highlights, clearly an entertainer.

Ultimately, while he is not on Mata’s level yet, as scout Jacek Kulig says, he is a “world-class” prospect and could well get there soon enough.

Therefore, Maresca should be bold and start him in place of Neto today.

Newcastle eyeing move to sign future "£100m-plus footballer" who Howe loves

Already thinking about 2026 targets, Newcastle United have reportedly set their sights on signing a Premier League rival who Eddie Howe is a huge fan of.

Newcastle handed early Barcelona boost

Ahead of Thursday’s clash against Barcelona, Newcastle have already been handed a major boost when it comes to team news. After missing their game against Valencia at the weekend, Lamine Yamal has been ruled out of Barcelona’s trip to St James’ Park and will not travel with Hansi Flick’s squad.

The 18-year-old, who is undoubtedly one of the best players in the world, would have been playing in England for the first time, but will now have to wait for his chance to send the same statement that he’s been sending ever since stepping foot on the biggest stage.

That said, Howe recently admitted that as much as Yamal’s absence could provide Newcastle with a boost this Thursday, he relishes playing the best players and best teams.

The Newcastle boss told reporters: “Whenever I get asked these types of questions my answer’s always the same – you want to play the best teams, you want to play against the best players, and you want to challenge yourselves as much as you can.

Ready to challenge Woltemade: Newcastle have found a "poor man's Haaland"

“But in saying that, we also want to win. We’ll take whoever they play. We know they’ve got world-class players in every position, so it’s irrelevant to a degree who is out there.”

It’s the first time in over 22 years that Barcelona will square off against Newcastle and a lot has changed in that time, both on and off the pitch. Away from the action, the Magpies are arguably in a position to compete against the Spanish giants financially and they could prove that by signing a Premier League rival in 2026.

Newcastle eyeing Kobbie Mainoo move

According to talkSPORT, Newcastle are now eyeing a move to sign Kobbie Mainoo from Manchester United in 2026. The midfielder has found himself in a frustrating position at Old Trafford after being denied the chance to leave on loan in the summer. Instead, forced to compete for a place in a World Cup year, he’s been left to watch on from Ruben Amorim’s bench in controversial fashion.

Just how long a player of Mainoo’s talent will settle for his current position is the big question. Howe is reportedly a huge admirer of the midfielder and Newcastle could test United’s resolve if they continue to leave their academy graduate out in the cold.

Manchester United's KobbieMainooin action with Leicester City's Boubakary Soumare

It wasn’t so long ago that Mainoo was scoring the winning goal against Manchester City in the FA Cup final and arguably in better form than anyone else in a Man United shirt. Old Trafford legend Paul Scholes even went as far as to describe the 20-year-old as “special” while he was labelled as a future “£100m-plus footballer” by United writer Alex Turk.

It remains unclear why Amorim has not handed him the chances that Erik ten Hag did, but Mainoo shouldn’t wait around to find out. Represented by the same agent as Nick Pope, the young star should jump at the chance if Newcastle come calling.

CSK sign Dewald Brevis as replacement for injured Gurjapneet Singh

Brevis will join CSK for INR 2.2 crore

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have signed South African batter Dewald Brevis as replacement for the injured Gurjapneet Singh for the remainder of IPL 2025. Brevis will join CSK for INR 2.2 crore.Brevis, who has played 81 T20s and has 1787 runs with a highest score of 162, played two T20Is for South Africa in 2023. He has prior experience of playing in the IPL having represented Mumbai Indians in 2022 and 2024. Earlier this year, he helped MI Cape Town win their first SA20 title with an 18-ball 38 in the final. He was the sixth-highest run-getter (230 at a strike rate of 184) in that tournament. Brevis’ ability to hit the ball hard and access unusual areas in the field have caught the eye of franchise owners in other parts of the world too. He’s played the CPL and represents the MI franchise in Major League Cricket in the USA.Brevis, who entered the IPL 2025 auction in November at a base price of INR 75 lakh and went unsold, has been in good form in the last few months. He finished as the second-highest run-getter in South Africa’s one-day and first-class tournaments. Although he is early in his career, the 21-year-old was tapped for big things, not least because of an uncanny resemblance to AB de Villiers when he’s at the crease. Brevis was even nicknamed ‘Baby AB’.Gurjapneet, the Tamil Nadu seamer who was bought by CSK at the auction for INR 2.2 crore, did not get a game this season.CSK are currently at the bottom of the points table with just two wins in seven games. Earlier, their regular captain Ruturaj Gaikwad was ruled out of the season with an elbow injury, with MS Dhoni taking over.
