Gianluca Scamacca West Ham injury update

West Ham United have suffered a body blow ahead of their opening Premier League fixture of the season against Manchester City today.

What’s the latest?

That’s according to Manchester Evening News, who quoted David Moyes’ response to injury updates as the Irons manager coyly claimed: “We’ve got quite a lot of concerns but I’m not going to give you them.”

He continued by ruling out the Hammers’ new signing Gianluca Scamacca due to fitness issues, saying: “Gianluca has only just joined us and he’s a little behind so I’m not expecting him to be available this weekend. He’s not played any minutes in pre-season so it makes it very difficult to put him out so soon…”.

Moyes will be gutted

Although Scamacca is yet to play for the Hammers, both Moyes and the club’s supporters will be disappointed to see their marquee summer signing ruled out for what looks the most difficult opening game that any Premier League side could be handed.

Michail Antonio has struggled with injury problems over his West Ham career, although he managed an impressive 36 league appearances last season, scoring ten goals.

In all honesty, though, the club were very lucky that the 32-year-old did not break down and leave them without a senior striker for some time.

Although that issue is now resolved with the arrival of Scamacca, his absence will be frustrating given his proficiency in front of goal last season, when he netted 16 goals in Serie A. The Irons are unlikely to get a host of chances against title holders Manchester City, so to be without the forward for today’s clash is a huge blow for West Ham.

Also, with an expected goals (xG) of 11.13, he overperformed in front of goal by 4.87. This outlines his clinical nature and his tendency to score from positions of little opportunity.

For comparison, Antonio’s xG of 12.79 represents a 2.79 underperformance. While over a league season one might prefer the striker who gets in the right positions, for games such as this a wildcard would often be prepared in order to stand a chance.

Moyes has been vocal in his admiration for the player, claiming that the Irons had “been watching him [Scamacca] for some time and even considered going for him last January. He has a presence as a player with his size and his ability to take the ball in, retain possession.

“We see him helping in maybe a different way to what we’ve had and his youthfulness means we know there is more room for improvement. It’s very rare you can have a top striker at 23 years of age – but he is.”

The absence of this kind of presence could be felt heavily by West Ham today, and Moyes will surely be gutted to be without his Italian recruit for their all-important opening league game.

Chukwuemeka is Milan’s transfer priority

AC Milan are reportedly prioritising a move for Aston Villa midfielder Carney Chukwuemeka this summer, according to a report from Italian outlet Calciomercato.

The lowdown: Hot prospect

A product of the youth system at Bodymoor Heath, the 18-year-old has enjoyed a rapid rise through the ranks in the Midlands, making 54 outings for the under-18 and under-23 sides before becoming a regular feature in the first-team squad.

The England youth international has made 16 senior appearances to date and has attracted admiration from Barcelona and a plethora of Premier League clubs, including Manchester City, Manchester United, Arsenal and Newcastle.

However, following early interest from Milan, it has now emerged that the Serie A giants are extremely keen on signing Chukwuemeka during the ongoing transfer window…

The latest: Milan’s priority

As per Calciomercato, the England Under 19 starlet is the leading target for the San Siro outfit ahead of Lille midfielder Renato Sanches.

It’s claimed that Chukwuemeka is ‘in the list’ in Milan, and a ‘overtaking’ has taken place in terms of priorities, with the Villa youngster now the main focus of the Rossoneri’s transfer activity.

The report added that a deal for the youngster, who was dubbed ‘special’ by podcaster Sam Tighe, could be done for a fee in the region of €10m (£8.5m).

The verdict: Writing on the wall

Chukwuemeka provided one assist in 12 Premier League outings last season but could be set to have his head turned by the lure of regular action and Champions League football.

Into the final 12 months of his contract at Villa Park (Transfermarkt) and after recent reports claimed that the Austria-born sensation had ‘no interest’ in signing a new deal, a sale could be the best option for all parties this summer.

While losing any top talent, particularly one nurtured from within, is a worry for the Villans, it seems as though the pathway to potential stardom could lie elsewhere for Chukwuemeka, potentially due to the likes of fellow academy graduate Jacob Ramsey already flourishing in Steven Gerrard’s side.

Whilst the Midlands club will remain hopeful that the teenager undergoes a change of heart and signs a lengthy contract extension, at present that seems unlikely. As such, Johan Lange and the Villa hierarchy should ensure they can extract as much as possible out of selling the 18-year-old to reinvest into targets such as PSV Eindhoven star Ibrahim Sangare.

Celtic must land Malick Thiaw transfer

Celtic have cashed in on a significant number of players over recent years, some of whom have made moves to English clubs.

The likes of Kieran Tierney, Odsonne Edouard and Kristoffer Ajer, among others, have all joined Premier League clubs in recent years and seen the Hoops pick up hefty sums in terms of transfer fees.

One other player who waved goodbye to Parkhead to join a team south of the border is Virgil van Dijk.

After making 115 appearances for the Bhoys across all competitions, in which he found the net 15 times and delivered seven assists in addition to winning two Premiership titles and one Scottish League Cup, the defender was sold to Southampton in 2015 for a fee of £13m.

Now that several years have passed since the Dutchman left Glasgow, the current transfer window could give Hoops boss Ange Postecoglou the chance to unearth what could be his own version of Van Dijk.

Last month, it was reported that Celtic were in talks with German club Schalke 04 over a potential swoop for their young centre-back Malick Thiaw.

The 20-year-old joined Schalke’s youth squad in 2015 and has since made 142 appearances for the club across their senior and youth teams, chipping in with 14 goals and providing five assists along the way.

In his 31 league appearances last season, the youngster made more interceptions (55) and won more tackles (45) than any other player at the Gelsenkirchen club. He also ended the campaign with a higher average of clearances per game (3.4) than any of his teammates.

This shows that, in addition to being a very capable defender, the Schalke centre-back can also be a threat in front of goal, just as Van Dijk was during his days at Parkhead.

It also backs up why the £5.9k-per-week titan was touted to have a “big future ahead” of him by football talent scout Jacek Kulig.

Bearing in mind how successful Van Dijk has gone on to be with Liverpool, the prospect of Postecoglou having his own version of the 30-year-old in his ranks with Thiaw is something that the Parkhead club should definitely try to make a reality this summer.

Williams again linked with Liverpool exit

Nottingham Forest are still trying to seal the signing of Liverpool youngster Neco Williams, according to BBC journalist Natalie Jackson.

The Lowdown: Williams expected to leave Liverpool

The 21-year-old looks likely to leave Anfield on a permanent basis this summer following the arrival of Calvin Ramsay from Aberdeen earlier this month as right-back cover for stalwart Trent Alexander-Arnold.

Williams’ playing time is set to be very limited at Liverpool, and it was for that very reason that he was sent out on loan to Fulham for the second half of the 2021/22 campaign, a decision that his national team coach Robert Page described as “brave” by the youngster.

Forest have been strongly linked with a move for the 21-cap Wales international recently, and it looks as though they could snap him up imminently.

The Latest: Forest working on Williams deal

Taking on Twitter on Saturday, Jackson claimed that the newly-promoted Premier League club are making a significant effort to sign Williams from Liverpool.

She said that Steve Cooper’s Forest are “doing everything they can to sign Liverpool defender Neco Williams” over the coming days.

[freshpress-quiz id=“398089″]

The Verdict: Ideal summer move

This would be a perfect summer move for Williams, allowing him to be a regular for a Premier League team ahead of the World Cup in Qatar later this year.

While Liverpool is arguably a level too high for him, given his sparsity of game-time, Forest could be an ideal destination, playing a rich brand of attacking football which allows their full-backs to get forward, as Djed Spence showed last season by chipping in with six goal contributions and averaging one key pass per game.

[freshpress-poll id=“399042″]

There is no reason why Williams can’t blossom into a formidable player at the City Ground, and it would benefit all parties for the transfer to be completed as soon as possible.

Everton: Richarlison transfer twist emerges

Richarlison reportedly wants to leave Everton this summer, with Tottenham Hotspur speculated to be interested in signing the Brazilian this summer, and a new update has now emerged from a reliable source.

What’s the latest?

The Daily Star journalist Paul Brown has made a huge claim regarding Farhad Moshiri’s stance on the deal for Richarlison with Spurs, which comes as a fresh twist on reports from recent days.

He told GIVEMESPORT: “My understanding is that from Everton’s point of view, they would rather keep the two things separate and that any deal for Richarlison would be just for money. That might change.”

Earlier this week, it was revealed that Tottenham are preparing to offer Harry Winks and Lucas Moura to Everton in an attempt to secure a deal for the Toffees’ Brazilian winger.

Supporters will be worried

There seems no doubt that Everton supporters will be worried about the unfolding situation with Richarlison, who has become a favourite at the club since he joined in 2018.

The 25-year-old has been a consistent performer at Goodison Park, scoring 53 goals and contributing 14 assists, with a goal contribution every 185 minutes, but it was his commitment and output in his final 10 appearances of this season that supporters would miss the most if he leaves.

Richarlison was Everton’s top scorer in one of the club’s most difficult seasons in the Premier League, which saw them only secure safety from relegation in the penultimate match of the campaign.

The Toffees winger scored six goals and contributed two assists in his final 10 appearances of the season, which contributed massively to the Merseyside club’s survival in the top flight.

Frank Lampard had high praise for Richarlison towards the end of the season, saying (via Liverpool Echo): “With Richy I think and I know that he understands what my feelings about him are. I think he is a fantastic, huge talent, with a work ethic which is the reason why Everton fans are so drawn to him.

“The way he fights – he is a really tough boy – and some of that is due to his make-up and upbringing. It is a pleasure to work with him.”

Everton are reportedly having to tighten up their spending this summer, so selling Richarlison for his full transfer value would likely be the only option as opposed to any proposed deal which may include Winks and Moura from Spurs, so that they can reinvest the funds effectively ahead of next season.

With that being said, Moshiri must prepare for the high chance that the 25-year-old leaves this summer, and identifying a player to replace the Brazilian’s output is an absolute must to ensure that the Toffees don’t get caught short next season.

Leeds: Marsch plotting Adams bid

Leeds United are interested in a deal to bring Tyler Adams to Elland Road in the summer transfer window.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to a report by MLS Transfers, who claim that sources have revealed the defensive midfielder is ready to leave RB Leipzig this summer, with the Bundesliga side looking to secure a “big fee” for the 23-year-old.

[snack-amp-story url= “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-leeds-united-news-transfer-rumours-gossip-and-much-more-2″ title=”Read the latest Leeds news, transfer rumours and more!”]

It is then claimed that Leeds and Benfica are the two “most interested” clubs in the USA international, with the duo believed to be “pushing” to secure the defensive midfielder for a more reasonable price than Leipzig are currently demanding.

The next Keita

While it is true that, following links with a £34m move to Arsenal last summer, Adams did not enjoy the best campaign of his career in 2021/22, it is undeniable that the American is nevertheless a player who boasts a significant amount of potential.

Indeed, according to FBref data, the £26m-rated talent still ranks in the 2% of midfielders in Europe’s big five leagues for blocks per 90, in addition to the top 18% for passes attempted, the top 25% for passes completed, the top 20% for pressures, the top 25% for progressive carries and the top 39% for aerial duels won over the last 12 months.

Furthermore, with the £38k-per-week midfielder looking to be a player who is a perfect fit for a team who like to deploy a high-press, it is easy to see why Marsch would once again like to work with his former New York Red Bulls and Leipzig starlet at Leeds, while it is also not difficult to understand why the Bundesliga website compares the 23-year-old to Liverpool’s £48m Naby Keita.

Indeed, it would appear as if Adams and the Guinea international possess extremely similar tools in the middle of the park, albeit with the Leipzig talent being a more reserved version of the Reds midfielder, while the American’s potential switch to the Premier League from the Red Bull Arena naturally echos the 27-year-old’s 2018 move to Merseyside.

As such, should Victor Orta be able to negotiate a much lower fee than Leipzig’s £34m asking price for the 23-year-old last summer, the signing of the player who Andrew Stern dubbed “an elite 6” would appear to make a great deal of sense for Marsch and the Whites ahead of 2022/23.

AND in other news: Orta can form “dangerous” duo with Leeds bid for £20m talent who “glides past players”

Liverpool: Source drops Tchouameni update

Spanish newspaper AS (via Sport Witness) have brought a fresh update regarding Liverpool and the pursuit of highly sought after AS Monaco midfielder Aurelien Tchouameni.

The lowdown: Rife speculation

With the summer transfer window fast approaching it appears that the interest in the 22-year-old Frenchman is intensifying.

The Reds have been extensively linked with Tchouameni in recent weeks despite the main focus being on the upcoming FA Cup and Champions League finals, as it becomes apparent a future away from the Ligue 1 outfit awaits at the end of the ongoing campaign for the powerful youngster.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/latest-liverpool-transfer-news-32/” title=”Latest Liverpool transfer news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Now as the speculation rumbles on, it’s been suggested that the Anfield club will have to pay big money to fend off Real Madrid and PSG…

The latest: ‘Very close’

The Spanish press believe the Reds have already made their first offer, and now according AS, translated by SW, sources close to the player have indicated a major move is expected this summer – the player has decided to leave Monaco.

It’s claimed that Liverpool are the ‘main rivals’ to Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain in the pursuit of the eight-cap France star, who is ‘very close’ to resolving his future and currently prefers a move to the Spanish capital.

The report also states that the Reds will need to spend between €70-80million (£60-68million) in order to sign the ace hailed as ‘outstanding’ by journalist Robin Bairner following a recent match-winning brace against LOSC Lille.

The verdict: Much-needed signing

Given the cruel setback suffered to Fabinho ahead of a crucial month for Jurgen Klopp’s side, the timing of the links to Tchouameni couldn’t be more salient.

Predominantly operating as a defensive midfielder, with very strong tackling and aerial ability (WhoScored), the Frenchman would be the perfect candidate to bolster the Anfield ranks as currently there is no natural understudy for Fabinho.

This season, Tchouameni has added goal contributions to an ever-developing game with seven in 48 appearances across all competitions whilst also boasting an average Sofascore rating of 7.33, the eighth-highest in Ligue 1, just behind the likes of PSG trio Lionel Messi, Kylian Mbappe and Neymar.

At just 22 and already an accomplished top-level operator, Liverpool should be pulling out all the stops to make this deal happen.

Mustafizur of old resurfaces in yo-yo spell

The left-arm seamer has struggled since returning from a shoulder injury, but a break and two first-class outings may have rekindled his success

Mohammad Isam at P Sara Oval18-Mar-20174:05

Isam: Mustafizur bowled really well to the right-handers

There were oohs and aahs, along with a bit of head-holding, in almost every over bowled by Mustafizur Rahman on the fourth day, especially in the second session. And not only from the slip cordon but also from people in the stands, the press box, and in all likelihood from those watching on TV too.Kusal Mendis pressed forward to drive, but saw the ball wobbling around and played it softly. He resisted the temptation to drive off the next delivery too, and left the third outside off as well. Another defence and a leave followed, and one ball remained in the 45th over from Mustafizur. The last delivery came into the right-hander with the angle from around the wicket before curving away ever so slightly. Mendis played at it.The wicketkeeper and the slip cordon appealed, but there was nothing more than a polite inquiry from Mustafizur. The umpire said not out and, after Bangladesh reviewed, replays suggested nothing decisive. But the TV umpire heard a noise as ball passed bat and overturned the decision. Mendis was unhappy on his walk back and Mustafizur had given Bangladesh a big breakthrough.***Mashrafe Mortaza says a captain doesn’t need to be in Mustafizur’s ears all the time because he believes it could affect the bowler’s thinking. For someone who has a bagful of tricks, Mustafizur uses variations quite tactfully, but things haven’t been as smooth as they were before a shoulder surgery in August last year. The Mustafizur who burst through against India in 2015 wasn’t to be found in New Zealand, and the team management gave him a break after he complained he wasn’t feeling fine. There were whispers that ‘IPL fever’ had got to him, with the T20 tournament slated to begin in the first week of April. It was all hearsay. After Mustafizur was essentially dropped for the one-off Test in India in February, he played two first-class games and took four wickets. One umpire remarked that the batsmen had found it tough to negotiate Mustafizur’s pace, a trait he isn’t known for. Was he ready for another tour?***During the first Test in Galle, Mustafizur showed glimpses of the bowler he was when he first emerged in 2015. But in these times the opposition sorts you out quickly. He finished his first Test in 18 months with three wickets, but bowled a late spell that may have gone unnoticed. The pace wasn’t striking because he had found his groove through his delivery stride, pivot and release to bowl his cutters. Here at the P Sara, Mustafizur’s run-up looked less ginger, his action less hesitant, and his delivery stride more powerful. Most indicators signalled a return to form. All he needed was a performance.***After taking Mendis’ wicket, Mustafizur kept forcing Dimuth Karunaratne and Dinesh Chandimal to drive by bowling full and straight. Chandimal was sucked into one and was caught behind, reward for pressure that had been built up through the spell. He bowled even better to Asela Gunaratne, but Shakib Al Hasan reaped the reward at the other end. Dhananjaya de Silva looked to play Mustafizur on reputation and gave him respect, but fell to the drive anyway, perhaps because he was caught in two minds.Mustafizur’s spell read 7-1-24-3, and it was as effective as it was fun to watch. He literally made the ball dash around like a yo-yo. Even more astonishing was the manner in which he got the ball to reverse, a factor that could be key on the final day against a lower order that will have to start from scratch.Another effective, and fun, Mustafizur spell could be the difference between a fairly comfortable chase and a nervous one.

Hope regained as South Africa fall on their feet

South Africa’s Test victory at Centurion cannot disguise the team’s problems but it gives them a basis from which to start the rebuilding process

Firdose Moonda in Centurion26-Jan-2016In the same way that we wonder whether a tree that falls in a forest devoid of people makes a sound, we question whether a match won in a series already lost really counts a victory. South Africa will tell you that it does.Centurion was a catharsis for them because it showed that, contrary to AB de Villiers’ thoughts after the Wanderers Test, all hope is not gone. That is not to be confused with the opposite: all hope has not been regained.South Africa won the match against a team who had already secured the only tangible thing there was to play for and at times lacked intensity as a result. Who knows how differently England’s attack would have approached their task on the first day. Who knows how much more value England would have placed on their wickets if there had been two more Tests, or how much care they would have taken with their catching.Because we don’t know, we have to credit South Africa for picking themselves off the floor and putting on a performance they can be proud of. If nothing else, that says they have made some progress.Van Zyl keeps up the pressure despite Cook success

Stephen Cook has secured his spot in South Africa’s Test side for the foreseeable future after he “played fantastic cricket, looked at home from the word go,” as AB de Villiers put it.

However, Stiaan van Zyl, the man he replaced, will continue to push for a place at the top of the order despite being given the option of moving down to No.3 at domestic level.

“Speaking to Stiaan van Zyl, he wants to continue opening the batting in franchise level. He loves it and he thinks he can do it,” Russell Domingo, South Africa’s coach said.

“There were phases were he looked really good. The middle order seems to be pretty jam-packed and there are also guys who are not playing like Faf du Plessis and Rilee Rossouw. Stiaan has to work out where he feels he can fit best. You don’t just give a player one or two opportunities. Chopping and changing breeds nothing but insecurity and adds more pressure.”

While South Africa consider the make-up of their team, de Villiers feels they have made some strides in this match. “It’s definitely a step in the right direction,” he said. “We didn’t play good cricket at the Wanderers but now there is something brewing. There’s a bit of confidence. a bit of experience, mixed with good youth.”

Two of those younger members are Temba Bavuma and Kagiso Rabada, who are changing opinions about transformation in South Africa. The importance of their development has not been lost on de Villiers

“For Temba and KG to come through – we know how South African’s history has gone – to see two guys step up is fantastic. It’s one of the highlights of my career.”

In the personnel department, they have certainly made progress, after a merry-go-round series in which their squad swelled to 17. In that mix were six fast bowlers, three wicketkeepers, two captains, a bowler who bats, a batsman who bowls and, only for the last match, a second specialist opening batsman. The addition of Stephen Cook brought immediate stability not just because South Africa’s top two had struggled up until then. Cook added experience – he has played 15 years in the first-class set-up – and assurance. Every shot Cook played was the stroke of a man in form. As a result, he has, in the words of Russell Domingo “secured the opening berth” for the immediate future.South Africa’s next Tests don’t come for six months but keeping Cook around beyond that will ensure South Africa have a solid top two for tours to Australia and England. It will also give Stiaan van Zyl the chance to develop into an opening batsman, assuming that is what he wants. At one-drop, South Africa have their No.3 back. Hashim Amla’s stepping-down as captain freed him up to be a batsman and it showed. With the decision made at Newlands, he scored a match-saving double-hundred. His innings at Centurion showed the Amla of old – the smooth drives, the wristy flicks, the mind that will not be hurt by a sore thumb – all that was there. But then we get to de Villiers and that’s where the problems start. South Africa’s new Test captain could be a former Test captain come August, by which time the selectors will have decided on a permanent skipper. No-one really knows if de Villiers wants the job, not even de Villiers himself. His series started with a story that he was considering early retirement, which he denied by saying all he wanted was a lighter workload. That came in the same match in which he was asked to keep wicket. So, for the next Test, de Villiers handed the gloves over but by the third one, he accepted the leadership. In essence, de Villiers wants to captain, but not keep, but he does not know how long he wants to do that for.His indecision will become South Africa’s irritation, as it did when Jacques Kallis neared the end and veered between being unavailable for bilateral ODIs to quitting Test cricket to focus on ODIs ahead of the 2015 World Cup, but he retired before the tournament. De Villiers is facing similar conundrums. His mixed messages are creating confusion and until South Africa obtain clarity on his situation, they will continue to face a conundrum. One of the reasons they’re allowing him this yo-yo period is because he is the best batsman in the world. Another is that he is one of very few senior players left and will be one of even fewer judging by how Faf du Plessis and JP Duminy are performing. They were both dropped in this series after lean patches that could no longer be tolerated. “No-one is sure of a place in the side,” de Villiers said afterwards. Now, du Plessis and Duminy know. They also know they are replaceable. Temba Bavuma has shown promise that has given South Africa a reason to look forward to the future. His groundbreaking century at Newlands and his gutsy innings at Centurion are the foundations of a career. Now he has to go and build the house.Like Kagiso Rabada, every brick Bavuma lays down is not just for himself. As the first black African batsman to play for the country, he is representing a huge majority and he knows it. “I know when I walk onto the field, it’s not just me walking onto the field,” he said. On the day of his century, the KFC kids from the township he was born in, Langa, were chanting his name and telling journalists how they wanted to be batsmen. Bavuma will inspire many more.Rabada will inspire them differently. At 20 years old, he is already a record-breaker. He has taken the most number of wickets by a South African in a Test, a figure he holds jointly with Makhaya Ntini and Hugh Tayfield. When Rabada took the 13th, Ntini was on his feet, passing on his baton.Kagiso Rabada is all smiles after dismissing Jonny Bairstow cheaply•Getty ImagesDale Steyn was in his lounge, passing on another baton. Rabada will become the new spearhead of the South African attack which may allow Steyn, when he regains fitness, to take on more of a Shaun Pollock-like role. Cut down on the extremes, focus on the accuracies and maybe South Africa will still get more of Steyn too. They need to, because the rest of the attack is as unsettled as the batting line-up. Morne Morkel has proved himself a workhorse and the best supporting actor South Africa could ask for. He has remained more injury-free than Steyn but it may not be that way forever. He is 31, which means in the next few years, South Africa will need someone to take over his role.At the moment none of Kyle Abbott, Chris Morris or Hardus Viljoen inspire that confidence. Abbott has not been the same since the World Cup, when he was left out of the semi-final XI in favour of Vernon Philander, Morris looked a better batsman than a bowler and, after Viljoen’s wicket off the first ball, he faded. South Africa still have to look for others. The search has not been made easy by the growing gap between franchise cricket and the international stage. Its causes have been put down to everything from the increased quotas which have affected franchise squads’ balances to the search for coaching expertise in an era of the declining Rand. Those complications will eventually flow upstream and affect the national side. The Centurion win cannot change any of that. It has given South Africa some reassurance, some reasons to smile, some relief. It has given the team its tree that fell in the forest, but it cannot guarantee how many people heard the noise.
