Luke Ronchi and Amad Butt turn it on for Islamabad United

There was little Multan Sultans could do in the face of a proper onslaught

The Report by Danyal Rasool22-Feb-2020

Luke Ronchi was in good touch for Islamabad United•PSL

That’s the Islamabad United we all know. It might have been predictable, but there was little Multan Sultans could do in the face of a blistering onslaught from Luke Ronchi and Colin Munro to bring down the target of 168. Both raced to half-centuries, and the game as a contest appeared to be over well before the final runs were actually taken, with 3.2 overs to spare. Ronchi (74 off 45) fell just two runs short of the target, looking to hit the winning runs. The top order has been key to Islamabad’s success so often across the PSL, and with both openers firing, they got off to a flyer. Imran Tahir, introduced in the second over because Ronchi and Munro ostensibly struggle against leg spin, was instead hounded out of the attack after an over in which the batsmen plundered 22 runs. Forty-seven came off the first four, and when the first wicket fell, the partnership already read 92 in 59 balls. The wicket didn’t stymie the run chase much, with Dawid Malan happy to carry on in Ronchi’s slipstream. Multan tried everything, including bringing on Moeen Ali, who had been the trump card against Lahore Qalandars in the last game. But, he was carted for 19 in his first over and Islamabad raced towards a first win of the tournament.Islamabad had been tighter with the ball earlier on, helped by how, for the second time in as many days, the Multan captain Shan Masood fell after getting a start. The further loss of Moeen and Rilee Rossouw within three balls was a profound blow to Multans’ momentum, and when James Vince fell in the next over thanks to an exquisite yorker from Amad Butt (4-27) the game was on its way to its very predictable conclusion.A tale of two PowerplaysThe contrast between the two sides’ opening six overs was essential to the outcome of the match. Whereas Islamabad went on the attack straightaway, Multan took time before the scoreboard began to tick over. Masood and Vince don’t have the explosive abilities of their Islamabad counterparts, and they had managed just 10 runs in the first 3 overs, a whopping 28 fewer than Islamabad at the same stage. And while Islamabad didn’t lose a wicket in the first six, Multan lost Masood, who holed out to fine leg off the final ball of the sixth over.Turning pointDespite Masood’s early departure, Multan weren’t in too troublesome a position after the first nine overs. That was the only wicket that had fallen, and Moeen was alongside Vince, who appeared to be growing in confidence. With Multan having accumulated 69 in the first nine, it was high time to accelerate.Islamabad, though, saw their chance to strike. Butt came on, and first ball of the over, deceived Moeen with the pace, forcing the England batsman to slice the ball up into the air. It was an easy catch for extra cover, and an early departure for Moeen, who, at this early stage of the PSL hasn’t quite been at his best. The killer blow came a couple of balls later. When Rossouw, who has often saved his best for the PSL, came on strike for his first ball, the variation in pace worked again. He would scoop the ball to the same spot, with Faheem Ashraf once more taking the simplest of catches. Islamabad were suddenly into the middle order and Multan found themselves having to make serious adjustments around the kind of target they had expected to set.Star of the DayWhile Islamabad knocked off the runs without a single Pakistan player so much as coming out to bat, the ease of the victory had been made possible by a local lad yet to take his international bow.Butt, 24, had suffered a pounding at Quetta Gladiators’ hands, going for 50 in four overs, but he grasped the chance to make amends with both hands. Not many bowlers make complete mugs of Moeen and Rossouw in the same over, and yet that’s precisely what sliced open the game for Islamabad in the 10th over.Incredulously, that wasn’t by his finest moment of the day. In his following over, he knocked Vince off his feet with a perfect yorker that Waqar Younis, who was on commentary at the time, would have been proud of. It went through the batsman’s legs to take out the leg stump. Vince was then 42 off 30 balls, and Multan needed him to be the anchor for the final eight overs, only for Butt to decisively uproot him. He would return at the death to dismiss Sohail Tanvir to claim his fourth wicket of the day and register his best-ever T20 figures.Where the teams standBoth Multan and Islamabad now have one win each, joining Quetta and Peshawar Zalmi, who are in the same situation. Karachi Kings remain the only team with a perfect record, while Lahore are the only side yet to win after the first three days.

O’Neil can replace Hwang & Cunha by unleashing Wolves’ teen dynamo

Wolverhampton Wanderers play their first Premier League this evening since March 9 as they face Aston Villa.

The Old Gold are flying high in the top flight this term, yet they slipped to a stunning defeat to Coventry City in the FA Cup quarter-final just two weeks ago.

Wolves manager Gary O'Neil before a Premier League game.

They led 2-1 with just injury time to go, but the Sky Blues scored twice – including the winner with just seconds to go – to claim a semi-final spot.

Gary O’Neil will no doubt have been devastated at such a collapse, yet it will allow him to focus on securing a top-half finish in the Premier League this season.

Wolves team news vs Aston Villa

The previous few weeks have seen several first-team stars suffer various injury issues. First, it was Matheus Cunha, before the likes of Hwang Hee-Chan, Jean-Ricner Bellegarde, Craig Dawson and Pedro Neto were all ruled out.

The latter four will be unavailable for the clash against Villa this evening, as O’Neil will have to rejig his starting XI.

Matheus Cunha

Cunha may be in line for a first appearance since the 2-0 loss to Brentford at the beginning of February.

Despite the Brazilian pushing for an opportunity, the manager may prefer to play it safe and continue to utilise a striker who has deputised for him and Hwang recently – Nathan Fraser.

Nathan Fraser can replace Hwang and Cunha

Between them during the 2023/24 campaign, Hwang and Cunha have scored 22 goals along with registering a further ten assists between them, emerging as O’Neil’s main attacking partnership when both are fit.

Since the pair have been out injured, he has had to change things slightly, with Fraser coming into the first team setup on a more regular basis.

During an EFL Cup tie against Blackpool earlier this season, the youngster scored and grabbed an assist, adding another goal to his collection against Brentford in the FA Cup back in January.

The teen has been described as “inquisitive” by the U21 head coach, James Collins, following his excellent showings for the youth team.

His maturity at such a young age has given O’Neil a licence to unleash the player against clubs such as Newcastle United and Manchester United recently.

Nathan-fraser-wolves

The teenager has shown plenty of promise across his four league appearances this season as he has averaged 0.5 key passes per game, won two total duels per game and lost possession on just three occasions per match, showing he has the ability to have an excellent future at the club.

If he can score his first top flight goal against Villa this evening, it could give O’Neil a major selection headache, especially with Cunha and Hwang returning to the fold sooner rather than later.

Being thrown in the deep end appears to have worked wonders for Fraser and his confidence levels, showing that he can adapt to senior football, especially in the Premier League.

Wolves in danger of losing a "top talent" who could replace Semedo

A victory over the Villa Park side will bolster their chances of finishing in the top half of the table. There is no doubt about that.

Usman Khawaja tells Shane Warne to look at his record

The left-hander has been unable to regain his Test place this season but his one-day form has been impressive

Daniel Brettig25-Nov-2019Usman Khawaja has bluntly directed Shane Warne to his record in all forms of cricket in response to criticism that he needs to “show how important playing for Australia is to him”.Having been dropped from the Australia Test team during the Ashes and not chosen in the squad for the Gabba Test, Khawaja will instead lead Queensland against Western Australia in the domestic limited-overs tournament final on Tuesday, and made his irritation at Warne plain when asked about it.”I don’t think there’s any need to answer that question,” Khawaja said of Warne questioning his desire to play for Australia. “I’m a batsman, I’m a run scorer first and foremost so that’s my currency, but if you look at my Shield record, you look at my one-day domestic record, my record for Australia, my BBL record, I score runs. That’s all that matters. Not really [going to change my body language], I’m a pretty cool bloke. You either get it or you don’t, that’s the way it is.”Asked whether he had given up on playing for Australia, he said: “No, never. If I had, I would’ve retired. You always have the goal of playing at the highest level. I feel like I belong at international level, but I’ve got to score runs, and if I do that, the rest will take care of itself.”Warne, who has criticised Khawaja on other occasions in the past, lauded the selectors Trevor Hohns and Justin Langer for dropping him. “Justin Langer and Trevor Hohns have done a good thing with Usman Khawaja,” Warne said in a column. “By leaving him out they have asked him to show how important Test cricket, and playing for Australia, is to him.”Throughout his Test career, he always seems to do just enough. Sometimes you just want to shake him and get him to show a bit more. Different personalities make up the team and some people aren’t as exuberant and emotional as others, but he can be better, particularly with his body language.”However, there will be an insight provided into how Khawaja felt about playing for Australia in a new fly-on-the-wall documentary series, commissioned by Cricket Australia in 2018 and depicting the team’s road back from the Newlands scandal to the dual campaigns for the World Cup and the Ashes. Khawaja is captured in the trailer holding his head in his hands after England’s one-wicket triumph at Headingley, which meant Australia had to win at Old Trafford to retain the Ashes. Khawaja was dropped after Headingley and has not played since.”Yeah it was very tough, a tough moment. I think it was a tough moment for the whole of Australia, let alone the guys playing,” Khawaja said. “So that stuff’s the down of sport, the stuff you don’t see, I keep my emotions in check when I’m on the field, but it’s probably the stuff off the field that you don’t see. I think I just wanted to win the Ashes there, and it felt like we had and then we lost it. That’s all it was, that’s why it hurt so badly at the time, it was devastating.”For a long time Australian cricket’s been very closed off, especially at international, not allowing people into the change rooms. I think this documentary is great, to see the other side of it, a lot of the fans wouldn’t have seen it ever, unless you were invited to come in. It’s a pretty special place, very different to what you see on the outside.”We just got used to it, you could have the camera in the shower and we wouldn’t even notice. A lot of the time the Doc just had the cameras up in the change room and we had no idea they were even there. Once it happens all the time you just get so used to it.”The selectors chose to drop Khawaja after he suffered a string of poor umpiring decisions in the Sheffield Shield, but in the domestic one-day tournament has delivered scores of 138, 112, 5, 31 and 86 not out to drive Queensland to the final at Allan Border Field. Speaking about how his Test fortunes had seemingly been cruelled by the judgments of umpires, Khawaja took a fatalistic view of events.”That’s frustrating, but that’s life, I’ve got to move forward, there’s not much I can do about it now,” he said. “I’m quite happy playing for Queensland, doing what I need to do for my state. I actually don’t think too much into a lot of things these days, I’m literally just going out and for me I’m a batsman trying to score runs, or in the field trying to take catches or get run outs, try to keep it really simple.”

Wet conditions force washout after 13 overs

Chris Gayle played his slowest ODI innings (minimum 25 innings) in his 31-ball 4, while Evin Lewis’ three sixes gave the home fans something to cheer about

The Report by Sreshth Shah08-Aug-2019Match abandoned After a five-and-a-half-hour period where only 13 overs were bowled, the first ODI between West Indies and India in Providence was called off by the umpires due to a wet outfield. In that period, Chris Gayle played his slowest-ever ODI innings (minimum 25 balls), scoring only four singles in 31 deliveries. At the opposite end, Evin Lewis ensured there was something for the home fans to cheer, blitzing an unbeaten 36-ball 40 that included three shoveled pulls over deep midwicket. The match began 90 minutes after the scheduled start, a delay forced by morning showers. When play started, though, following Virat Kohli’s decision to bowl, the sun was bathing upon a half-filled Providence Stadium, but with rain scheduled towards the afternoon, it was not long before the first interruption happened. With Mohammed Shami, from around the wicket, troubling the sedate Gayle, and Lewis failing to find gaps in the infield, the teams first left the ground after 5.4 overs with West Indies yet to reach double digits. Over an hour later, the players returned, and Lewis made full use of the wet ball, shoveling Bhuvneshwar Kumar for six. In the next over, he creamed 15 runs off left-arm quick Khaleel Ahmed, with a pulled six over midwicket sandwiched between two flicked fours through the on side. The partnership was primarily saved by Lewis’ aggression with Gayle failing to find his timing, and it was eventually Kuldeep Yadav who ended the batsman’s innings in the 11th over.Playing his 299th ODI – equalling West Indies’ record-holder Brian Lara – Gayle needed 11 runs to become the team’s highest-ever ODI run-scorer, but swinging conditions early on meant he was either splicing the ball or missing it completely. While Lewis’ rampage was on, Gayle was unable to break free as he tried to heave Kuldeep’s full-pitched stock delivery over the leg side, only to inside-edge it onto the stumps.Rain returned two overs later, and it was intermittent enough for the umpires to call the game off at 3.12pm local time. Wet patches on the field earlier in the day had delayed the game’s restart, and in anticipation of the ground not being ready by 4pm – the cut-off time for a 20-over-a-side shootout – umpires Nigel Duguid and Adrian Holdstock called off the match. Ironically, a few minutes after that decision, the sun returned, but by then it was too late. The teams now move to Port-of-Spain for the second ODI on August 11.

Southampton keen on signing Premier League full-back ahead of Leeds

Southampton are showing an interest in signing an "absolutely brilliant" Premier League player in the January transfer window, according to a new report.

Southampton transfer news

The Saints are flying on the pitch at the moment, thumping Sheffield Wednesday 4-0 on Saturday afternoon, and they also continue to be linked with new signings who could aid their Championship promotion push between now and the end of the season, with Bournemouth midfielder Joe Rothwell looking likely to be the first loan arrival of the month.

Ussumane Djalo is one player who has emerged as a potential target for Southampton, with the 19-year-old midfielder currently playing for Porto, and Aston Villa youngster Lamare Bogarde has also been backed to move to St Mary's Stadium. On the flip side, there are certain players who could move from Saints this month, including striker Che Adams, who has recently been linked with a move to Premier League side Wolves.

It looks as though the south coast club are looking to England's top tier for a possible new addition to Russell Martin's side, however, after a new transfer claim emerged.

Southampton want Ben Johnson

According to Football Insider, Southampton are one of many clubs interested in signing Ben Johnson, alongside promotion rivals Leeds, with a move away from West Ham potentially happening for the defender this month.

Leeds United transfer target Ben Johnson before a Premier League game with West Ham.

"Rangers, Leeds United and Sheffield United are among the sides keen on landing West Ham star Ben Johnson this month, sources have told Football Insider. It is believed Southampton are also in the mix for the 23-year-old – who could leave the London Stadium on loan before the 1 February deadline.

"Johnson is entering the final six months of his West Ham contract and is keen to play regular first-team football after struggling for game time with David Moyes’ side."

Johnson is someone with proven experience at Premier League level, making 57 appearances in the competition for West Ham, not to mention chipping in with two goals for good measure, so he could be an excellent signing by Southampton.

The 23-year-old would bring experience and potential quality to the defence, not to mention putting his versatility to good use, with the Hammers ace capable of turning out as a centre-back, right-back, left-back or even a midfielder.

Former England and Tottenham goalkeeper Paul Robinson has hailed him as "absolutely brilliant" in the past, and he will surely be open to bringing an end to his time at the London Stadium.

Southampton eyeing cut-price transfer to sign highly-rated midfielder

Scouts have been sent to watch him in action.

ByHenry Jackson Jan 10, 2024

At 23, there could still be so much more to come from Johnson, who has won 10 caps for England's Under-21s, showing what a highly-rated prospect he has been in the past, and he may really stand out in the Championship, helping Southampton seal a return to the Premier League in the process.

The Englishman, who also shares the same agent as Kyle Walker-Peters, is also a UEFA Europa Conference League winner with West Ham, and this winning mentality could do no harm at the Saints, should they pip others to his signature before the month comes to an end, making this one to keep an eye on.

Is this the next batch of Australia's golden generation?

Some are around the state first-team or BBL systems already and have shown plenty of promise

Andrew McGlashan12-Feb-20241:47

Australia Under 19 captain Hugh Weibgen: ‘We try to emulate the senior team’

Before Sunday, the last player to captain Australia to the Under-19 World Cup was Mitchell Marsh in 2010. He has just won the Allan Border Medal and will highly likely lead the senior team at this year’s T20 World Cup. Josh Hazlewood was Player of the Match in the final, Kane Richardson was also in the side and Adam Zampa part of the squad. Two years later, when they lost to India in the final the team included Travis Head along with Ashton Turner and Cameron Bancroft. From the 2018 side, also beaten by India in the final, Will Sutherland and Xavier Bartlett have recently made international debuts and Nathan McSweeney is highly tipped to follow. From the 2020 group, Todd Murphy, Tanveer Sangha and Jake Fraser-McGurk are already capped by Australia. There have been others, too, who have gained a handful of matches at the top level and many others who have played, and continue to do so, professionally at domestic level. However, it is not a straight line from being an Under-19 international to then forging a full career.Related

It’s hard to say where all the current Australia U-19 side, victorious over India by 79 runs in Benoni, will be in 10 or 12 years’ time, but there is a feeling it could be something of a golden generation in terms of those who do kick on with their cricket careers.A number are already around the state first-team or BBL systems: Sam Konstas has made his Sheffield Shield debut for New South Wales, Player of the Final Mahli Beardman (who is highly regarded by Marsh) has appeared in one-day cricket for Western Australia, Harry Dixon has a BBL contract with Melbourne Renegades as does exciting quick Callum Vidler with Brisbane Heat and captain Hugh Weibgen holds a rookie Queensland contract.”If they can all keep working hard on their games there’s plenty who can make a career out of the game,” Australia Under-19 coach Anthony Clark told ESPNcricinfo the morning after the final. “Where they go and how far will depend on how hard they work, but the raw ability is certainly there for a lot of them.”My message after the game was obviously congratulations and enjoy the win, but the most important thing for all your guys now is when you go back and the next game you play is as important as this one and you need to keep getting better.”Dixon finished as the team’s leading run-scorer with 309 at 44.14 and believed his time with Renegades played a key role. Though he didn’t play, just being able to practice in that environment was priceless. The fast-bowling cartel – Mahli Beardman, Callum Vidler, Charlie Anderson and Tom Straker•ICC/Getty Images”Think it definitely helped with all the coaches they had around there and all the players, taking stuff from them, the likes of Aaron Finch, just soaking up as much as possible,” he said. “With the training there’s a lot of fielding stuff which is mostly what helped me develop a bit more which I think has helped the team.”However, while some already have their foot in the professional door, for others there are more mundane things awaiting when they get home. Oliver Peake, an injury replacement in the squad who made a vital 46 off 43 balls in the final, will be back at school in a few days.”He’s sucked the marrow out of cricket tournaments over the summer break,” his father, Clinton, told . “But he’ll need to go to school and get ready for assessment tasks and normal world stuff.”But a cricket career looks to be in the offing. “He’s bit of a student of the game, loves batting and is just a really good kid,” Clark said. “As someone so young, the future looks bright for him.”It was Australia’s pace attack that took most of the headlines with Beardman’s 3 for 15 in the final following Tom Straker’s 6 for 24 against Pakistan while Vidler, 14 wickets at 11.71, caught the eye with his pace regularly above 140kph.”With the bowling attack we have it’s pretty much a luxury,” Dixon said. “With all the boys being so good we don’t need to get as many on the board. We backed our bowlers in and they were fantastic throughout the whole tournament so credit to them.”The quicks were supplemented by offspinner Raf MacMillan who took 3 for 43 in the final. “He was really important,” Clark said. “Almost the final cog in the wheel and has gone a bit unheralded just because the other four boys are really exciting to watch…he’s very good at what he does.”You never know when you go into a tournament how it’s going to pan out but though we had most bases covered from a skills point of view across out 15. We had seven really good batters, couple of wicketkeepers, couple of spinners with real talent and the five fast bowlers. But you don’t know how it all gels together until it starts happening but really came together nicely as we went through the tournament.”The time the group spent together over the past year has been cited as a key reason behind their success. “They play hard for each other and really care about each other,” Clark said. “When it’s like that it comes together nicely on the field. Obviously, the talent part is the major ingredient but the other stuff is really helpful, too.”The nature of Under-19 cricket means this team won’t play together again, but the class of 2024 will always be World Cup winners. “It’s a massive achievement,” Dixon said. “Just really nice to make some lifelong friends.”
