Duckett delivers but England fall flat again to put tournament on the line

England opener shows way ahead of must-win games against Afghanistan and South Africa

Knight: The way Duckett rotated strike put Australia under pressure

It was as fine a consolation hundred as they come. An innings which rubber-stamped Ben Duckett as one of England’s best multi-format batters, further vindicating his move to open the batting in ODIs. It also highlighted the shortcomings of his team-mates.Duckett’s 165, the highest individual score in Champions Trophy history, made up 47% of England’s 351. A total which Australia chased down with 15 balls and five wickets to spare in Lahore thanks to Josh Inglis’ own collector’s item century. The way Duckett approached Adam Zampa was particularly fresh, scoring 50 from the 36 balls faced. The rest of the line-up managed just 14 off 24 balls from the legspinner, who dismissed Joe Root (the only other batter to make a score of note) and Harry Brook.”We’ve been wanting that from our batters,” a downbeat Jos Buttler told Sky Sports immediately after the match, referencing Duckett’s journey to three figures. In 15 ODIs since the 2023 World Cup, England have only produced four centuries, and Duckett has been responsible for half of them.Related

Josh Inglis 120* seals record win for Australia

There is a lot to be said for England’s woeful run of 50-over form since the botched defense of their 2019 title. Much of it is summed up by the fact this, their 11th defeat in 15, already has them in “must win” territory for the final Group B games against Afghanistan and South Africa. And the fact Duckett was able to play an innings of such substance will be of some comfort. That comfort is solely down to Duckett’s reliability rather than a blueprint to adopt. The left-hander’s methods are very much his, from the way he chokes the neck of the bat with his bottom hand, to his ability impart a “slap” into every shot in front of the wicket. Both short balls from Spencer Johnson despatched down the ground for successive fours to take him to his hundred from 95 deliveries were fine examples of this.Duckett’s consistency has been something to behold, underlining his maturity and leadership capacity, which is why he finds himself at the forefront of Brendon McCullum’s white ball refresh. Since his return to the Test side in 2022, Duckett has been England’s third-highest runscorer in whites, averaging 43.20 as an opener. Last year, he was also third across all formats, despite not playing a single T20I. And since moving to the top of the order in ODIs, his nine appearances – six against Australia, three against India – have produced 601 runs, with five 50-plus scores and a strike rate of 113.82. By way of comparison, Jonny Bairstow and Jason Roy, one of the greatest 50-over opening partnerships, went at 105.98 and 105.53, respectively. This knock was as much about persistence. At three hours and 35 minutes, with 143 balls faced, taking him from the start of the innings through to the 48th over, this was comfortably the lengthiest of Duckett’s 86 List A innings. In fact, of his 60 Test innings to date, only two have been longer in terms of balls faced.Ben Duckett brought up his second ODI hundred against Australia•Associated PressIt also showcased Duckett’s evolution, underpinned by a sense of responsibility. “I was certainly not fluent at the top – it was probably my slowest powerplay,” Duckett told Sky Sports, having been 17 off 24 before striking the last ball of the 10th over for four. “But I knew in my head that they were gonna bowl a lot of spin through those middle overs, and it was spin that I could target.”The way he played Zampa was smart, but the way he used his array of sweeps (or didn’t, in this case) was smarter.”I think the beauty now is people are cutting off the sweeps for me, which allows me to hit straight. On that pitch, it felt like really early, actually, I’m not gonna sweep too much with the bounce being a little bit invariable. But, I’m gonna commit and run down and and make sure I can hit the ball straight and I think that’s probably the biggest part of my game that I’ve tried to change.”Duckett’s first swept boundary came once he reached three figures, a reverse for four at the end of the 33rd over against Zampa. His three sixes went down the ground – one off Zampa and two off Glenn Maxwell, having clocked the latter’s traits during their recent Big Bash League stint together for Melbourne Stars. As ever with Duckett, there was a bit of light relief when assessing how this particular approach could fair going forward. “I might get caught mid-off next time, who knows… but it’s something that I back myself to do now and you know, I’ve only got to clear the ring.”That, however, was as meme-able as Duckett got. Amid the high of another fine performance was an admission of feeling “flat” at how the match itself transpired.England return to the Gaddafi Stadium on Wednesday to face Afghanistan, needing to match Duckett’s verve. He himself will be required to match his own – even if this majestic century, comfortably one of England’s best at a major event, was not enough. It was not even the best century of the day.

New York Strikers, themselves first-timers, face Samp Army in Qualifier 1, while Team Abu Dhabi and Deccan Gladiators meet in the Eliminator

Aadam Patel03-Dec-2022The final four of the Abu Dhabi T10 is set after Friday’s triple-header at the Sheikh Zayed Stadium, with New York Strikers and Morrisville Samp Army, the two new franchises, topping the league table. They will now be going head-to-head in Saturday’s Qualifier 1, with the winner directly making it to Sunday’s final. After Delhi Bulls beat Chennai Brave in a dead rubber on the last day of the round-robin matches, Samp Army brushed Northern Warriors aside to temporarily go atop before Strikers reclaimed top spot by hammering Team Abu Dhabi. In what is the same format as the IPL, the loser between Samp Army and Strikers will get another go on Saturday evening against the winner of the Eliminator between Team Abu Dhabi and defending champions Deccan Gladiators.Related

Moeen Ali’s Samp Army side came into their final league match knowing that a win would be enough to finish in the top two, but found themselves in a bit of bother after losing four wickets in the space of eight deliveries during their chase of 118. At 82 for 5 at the start of the seventh over, the game was in the balance, with Moeen, David Miller, Shimron Hetmyer, Karim Janat and Johnson Charles back in the dugout. Both Moeen and Miller were dismissed without troubling the scorers, but a rapid 45 off 18 deliveries from Hetmyer – including five monstrous sixes – had set Samp Army up, after which Dwaine Pretorius (17* off seven) and Chamika Karunaratne (22* off eight) held their nerve to take their side home with nine balls to spare.Hetmyer was in the headlines in October after missing West Indies’ rescheduled flight before the T20 World Cup, and subsequently getting removed from the West Indies squad, but has enjoyed being a part of the T10. He walked into the post-match press conference with a bandage around his left arm after hurting himself during the run chase, but still with a beaming smile.”Whatever’s happened before has happened, and I’m trying to put that behind me,” Hetmyer said. “One of the best things about T10 cricket is just the freedom to go out and express yourself. Win, lose or draw, I try and play the game with a smile on my face, and enjoy it as much as I can.”After seeing Samp Army’s win, Chris Lynn’s Abu Dhabi outfit knew that nothing less than two points would do if they wanted to get back in the top two, and coming off the back of a four-game win streak, they would have certainly fancied their chances. But Strikers have found another gear throughout the last week, and came into the game with a five-match winning run of their own. And from the moment Kieron Pollard won the toss, they were in control. They struck regularly with the ball, with Wahab Riaz taking 3 for 4, and Rashid Khan showcasing his craft and guile by bowling his namesake Adil Rashid and Andrew Tye. At the halfway mark, a total of 78 was never going to trouble Pollard’s side, who had spent their previous two evenings in Abu Dhabi pulling off chases of 144 and 113.Though Paul Stirling was undone by a superb inswinger from Naveen-Ul-Haq, it was Eoin Morgan and Muhammad Waseem who steadied the ship before Adil Rashid removed his former England captain. But any doubt of a Strikers’ win was removed in the next over, as David Payne was sent for three sixes by Waseem, and Pollard secured victory in style with a huge hit over long-on.Eight teams are now down to four, and it is the new boys who are making all the noise at season six of Abu Dhabi T10.

India's conservative starts batting first in ODIs hurting them

It is a matter of a shift in attitude and some time to get used to England’s style of play

Manjrekar: Rahul seemed to be encouraged by Kohli to play the long innings

10-0-47-0On a day that a lot will be said about India’s bowling, these figures of the opposition’s fingerspinner are the story. Moeen Ali, who averages 51 runs for a wicket and concedes at 5.30 an over in ODIs, bowled at 4.70 an over in a match where 336 was gunned down in 43.3 overs. In all, Ali was hit for one boundary, that too thanks to a misfield by Ben Stokes at the 30-yard ring. ESPNcricinfo’s scorers recorded only one aggressive stroke attempted off Ali’s 60 balls that were bowled in a single unbroken spell starting at the 17th over, by which time India’s third-wicket partnership was 7.2 overs old.Ali is no mystery bowler. He doesn’t bowl the carrom ball. He was bowling to two right-hand batsmen, one of them among the greatest ever to play the format. The pitch was not turning: spinners have combined figures of 67-0-489-2 in this series. All Ali did was avoid bad balls, and India didn’t bother to attack the good ones. This was a period of ceasefire where England didn’t try to manufacture a middle-overs wicket, and India didn’t go out of their way to hit the spinners out of the attack.Consequently, for a second match in a row India needed a crazy two-run-a-ball innings to get to what was still a second below-par total in a row. In the last game a freak collapse gave India the series lead, this time the bowling reverted to type: since the start of 2020, the first wicket has cost India 115 runs on an average at 6.40 an over. And for a majority of this time, India have had their best attack barring Bhuvneshwar Kumar to choose from.Related

Stats: Sixes galore in record England win

India are a very good ODI side. In the last three World Cups, they have won one and made two other semi-finals. They are consistently among the top three ODI sides at any given point of time. Their win-loss ratio is always impressive. Their batting takes care of itself when they are chasing. It is when batting first that their conservative attitude is keeping them from becoming the undisputed leader of the field. To put it in one sentence, they don’t subscribe to England’s principle: they would rather be aggressive and risk falling short by 70 than consistently staying par or 10 below par. India like to take games deep. Just stay in games for long period of times and never risk losing out too early. That’s the cricket this team’s leaders, Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, learnt under MS Dhoni. It is not that they lack the skill. When Australia chased successfully with 10 wickets to spare in 2019-20, India responded with a 340 in the next ODI. West Indies won with eight wickets in hand, and India came back with a 387 three days later. Every time they are pressed against the wall, they respond with aggressive and successful cricket batting first, but drop back to conservative cricket at the start of every series. The last time India were presented with such a challenge in ODI cricket – they consistently found out their 325s were not the above-par totals they would have liked to believe – they responded by overhauling their bowling. The two wristspinners worked like a charm, but now the world seems to have caught up with them. With just four fielders outside the circle, they are getting attacked. Yuzvendra Chahal is a completely different bowler in T20Is when he has that extra fielder out. ODI cricket has thrown a huge challenge at spinners – as R Ashwin points out in this video – and this time India’s spinners are not immune. It was interesting that Kohli said at the post-match presentation that he felt India had posted a decent total on the board, and that they were blown away by a freak partnership. Three of the last 11 successful chases of 300 in ODIs have come against India. Make it 280, and India have lost four of the last nine successful chases. The way Rishabh Pant and Hardik Pandya bat, especially with KL Rahul now as that dynamic middle-order batsman, it is scary how good India can be if their top order decides to bat the way England do. To be fair, Kohli takes more risks now than he did a couple of years ago, but there is a chance that with three such similar batsmen at the top, India are still lagging in that regard. Not long ago, with Dhoni and others struggling in the middle order, there might have been a case for the top order to be conservative so that they can be at the back end to maximise the death overs, but that is not the case now. Even if Sharma sets himself up for a crazy assault at the end, he won’t be going much faster that what Pant, Rahul and Pandya anyway do. With the bowlers getting further marginalised, there might be a case for India to relook at how they bat in the first 30 overs when batting first.India have all the skill to be as good if not better than England; it is a matter of a shift in attitude and some time to get used to that new style of play. Perhaps even a slight change of personnel.

Nationals Outfielder Used His Foot to Make Coolest Catch of the MLB Season

The Mets and Nationals did battle on Sunday afternoon as NFL games kicked off across the country. But it was the sleepy NL East clash that produced the best highlight of the day.

In the bottom of the fifth inning, Washington found itself with a 3-1 lead over New York at Citi Field. Bret Baty was at bat and mashed a deep fly ball to dead center field, where Nationals center fielder Jacob Young backpedaled to try and make the grab. He jumped, caught the ball, then smashed into the outfield padding, forcing the ball to pop out of his glove. As he stumbled backwards, Young flung his foot out and somehow managed to bounce the baseball straight up back into the air, where he nabbed it for the out.

Very impressive hacky sack skills, and maybe the coolest catch of the whole baseball season.

What a ludicrous play. Young could collide with the wall like that 100 times and not see the ball bounce so perfectly into the air again. And even though MLB athletes are incredibly coordinated, it would be tough for him to replicate his hacky sack move with the ball as he's stumbling around the outfield dirt.

An awesome highlight. It also may prove painful for the Mets should the score hold. New York is only one game ahead of the Reds for the last NL wild-card spot. Young's circus catch could wind up rather consequential for postseason hopes if the Mets can't turn it around and pull out a win.

Tottenham looking to offload Spurs regular in January, Frank doesn't want him

Tottenham are looking to sell a Spurs regular who Thomas Frank no longer wants with the January transfer window looming, according to a new report today.

Tottenham's rumoured plans for the January transfer window

If there’s one thing the last month has taught us, it is that the Lilywhites are still far from the finished article.

Tepid London derby defeats to Arsenal and Chelsea in the last few weeks, where Spurs barely managed to threaten in either encounter, significantly highlight the need for more firepower in particular.

Striker Dominic Solanke remains out with an ankle injury that required minor surgery, while star playmakers James Maddison and Dejan Kulusevski are still working to come back from their respective long-term problems.

This has left Spurs starved of attacking quality at times, with summer signing Xavi Simons largely failing to impress bar a player of the match display at home to FC Copenhagen in the Champions League.

A silver lining for the north Londoners was Randal Kolo Muani’s exceptional outing against parent club PSG in Europe on Wednesday, where the Frenchman bagged a brace and an assist during the thrilling eight-goal thriller in Paris.

However, amid Solanke’s injury problems and the uncertainty surrounding Kolo Muani’s long-term future, considering he is only on a dry loan, reports suggest that Tottenham could look to sign a striker in January.

Co-sporting directors Fabio Paratici and Johan Lange are also targeting a winger, with Bournemouth’s Antoine Semenyo on their radar.

Semenyo, who has stood out as one of the Premier League’s finest attacking players this season, could leave for just £65 million during the early stages of January due to a release clause in his contract.

Ex-club chief now tips Tottenham to sign Man City star for £50m in January

A deal is apparently there to be done.

By

Nov 28, 2025

Some media sources claim that Tottenham are prepared to shatter their winter transfer record by signing both Semenyo and FC Porto striker Samu Aghehowa, with the latter in excellent goalscoring form right now.

To fund such a big investment, player sales may be needed, and one man believed to be on the chopping block is striker Richarlison.

Tottenham looking to offload Richarlison in January

According to recent reports, despite selecting him 20 times this season, whether that be in the starting eleven or from the bench, Frank views Richarlison as ‘expendable’ heading into 2026.

Now, journalist Pete O’Rourke has told Football Insider that Tottenham are looking to sell Richarlison in January.

Amid concerns surrounding inconsistent form and the fact his contract expires in 2027, it is clear to see why.

The Brazil international has actually scored six goals and bagged a further two assists this term, including two stunning goal of the season contenders against Burnley and Arsenal respectively.

However, Richarlison has still come under criticism this season, and January represents an opportunity to offload for a significant fee before it is too late.

The 28-year-old cost £60 million to sign from Everton, and reports suggest that Richarlison could return to Goodison Park as one mooted destination.

Garnacho upgrade: Chelsea enter race to sign "best winger in the country"

As they do every year, Chelsea made their fair share of signings in the summer.

Some of them have been hits, like Joao Pedro and Estevao – even if he was technically signed last year – but others have struggled, like Jamie Gittens and Liam Delap.

Then there are a few who sit somewhere in between, like Alejandro Garnacho, who hasn’t lit the world alight, but has popped up with goal involvements here and there.

Unfortunately for the Argentine, that might not be enough to save his place in the team, as reports are now linking Chelsea to someone who’d be a massive upgrade.

Chelsea target Garnacho upgrade

It might be around a month and a half until the transfer window officially opens, but that hasn’t stopped the reports linking Chelsea to a number of talented Premier League stars.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

For example, despite being well stacked in the middle of the park, the Blues have been linked with both Elliot Anderson and Adam Wharton in recent days.

Now, both of them would undoubtedly improve Enzo Maresca’s squad, but they certainly cannot be described as Garnacho upgrades, unlike Antoine Semenyo.

Yes, according to a recent report from Spain, Chelsea are interested in signing the Bournemouth star.

However, they are not the only ones, as the report also claims that the likes of Arsenal, Manchester City and Liverpool are also all vying for the Ghanaian’s signature.

Fortunately, even though the competition is far from ideal, another story from The Athletic has revealed that the Cherries star has a £65m release clause in his new contract, which will be active for part of January.

It will be a complicated transfer to get done, but given Semenyo’s immense game-changing ability, it’s one worth fighting for, especially as he would be an upgrade on Garnacho.

How Semenyo compares to Garnacho

As Chelsea have lofty ambitions of challenging on all fronts in the coming season, the best place to start when comparing Garnacho to Semenyo is their ability to score or assist goals.

Unfortunately for the former Manchester United ace, doing this makes it quite clear that he is second best when it comes to output.

For example, so far this season, he has scored twice and provided two assists in ten appearances, which comes out to a goal involvement every 2.5 games.

The Bournemouth star, on the other hand, has scored six goals and provided three assists in 12 appearances, which translates to a far better average of a goal or assist every 1.33 games.

Even last season, the Ghanaian international came out ahead as, in 42 games, he scored 13 goals and provided seven assists, which is an average of a goal involvement every 2.1 games.

In contrast, the Blues’ new winger produced 21 goal involvements in 58 appearances, which comes out to a less impressive average of one every 2.76.

The bad news for the Madrid-born ace is that he also comes out as a clear second best when you take a look under the hood and compare their underlying numbers.

For example, while he’s not ahead in every metric, he performs better in the majority of them, including some key ones, such as non-penalty expected goals, progressive passes, shots on target, successful take-ons, and more, all per 90.

Ultimately, with all this in mind, it is clear that the Cherries ace is a better player than the West Londoners summer signing, and that Chris Waddle might not be too far off the mark with his claim that he’s currently “the best winger in the country.”

Therefore, while it won’t be easy, Chelsea should do all they can to sign Semenyo in January, as he’s an exceptional player and a clear upgrade on Garnacho.

Braves Announce Injury Updates for Ronald Acuna Jr, Spencer Strider

The Atlanta Braves have opened spring training, and general manager Alex Anthopoulos provided key updates to two star players.

Four-time All-Star and 2023 National League MVP Ronald Acuña Jr. will not play in spring training games as he continues to rehab from a torn left ACL. Acuña is not expected to be ready by Opening Day, but could return early in the season. The star player told reporters on Friday morning that he feels "90-95%" and that he feels "much more stable" than his first ACL surgery and rehab.

As for starting pitcher Spencer Strider, his rehab from surgery on his UCL in his throwing elbow is preogressing well. He is expected to pitch this spring, per Anthopoulos, as he tries to regain the form that made him a 20-game winner pre-surgery in '23.

Pant retires hurt after inside-edging a reverse sweep onto his right foot

He appeared to be in significant pain as he left the field on the back of a golf-style buggy

India were left hoping for a miracle after Rishabh Pant had to retire hurt and go for scans after a nasty foot injury when on 37 during the first day of the fourth Test at Old Trafford.Pant’s foot was swollen and he looked in pain after he inside-edged an attempted reverse sweep off Chris Woakes onto his right (front) foot. He survived the lbw shout and the subsequent review, but the immediate swelling and his inability to put any weight on the foot were worrying signs for India.Pant, India’s wicketkeeper and vice-captain, needed the help of a golf-style buggy to get off the field following on-field medical attention. He was taken to the medical facility at the ground, where captain Shubman Gill went to see him, and then to a hospital for scans.Liam Dawson, the England spinner, said he wished the best for Pant but “can’t see him playing much more part in this game”. B Sai Sudharsan, who was the non-striker at the time, described the pain his partner was in.Before the injury, Rishabh Pant played some incredible shots, including a sweep against Jofra Archer for four•Getty Images

“Oh, he was in a lot of pain definitely,” Sai Sudharsan said. “But they’ve gone for scans. We will get to know [more] overnight.”Sai Sudharsan was asked how much of a loss it would be if the injury turned out to be serious (possibly a fracture). “Obviously, he was batting really well,” Sai Sudharsan said. “We will miss a batter if he doesn’t come back again. So it will definitely have consequences. But, at the same time, the batters we have batting right now and there are a few more allrounders inside, so we will try and give our best and bat long so that we negotiate that loss well.”Pant’s innings of 37 off 48 balls was largely restrained but featured several characteristically outrageous shots, including a slog sweep for four off Jofra Archer, followed by an unsuccessful reverse sweep off the next ball. This is the second injury he has sustained in as many Test matches, following a blow on his left index finger while keeping in England’s first innings at Lord’s. Dhruv Jurel substituted as India’s wicketkeeper for the rest of that Test match. Though Pant was in discomfort while batting, he was cleared to play in Manchester.

Immense new Leeds injury update shared from Thorp Arch on £75k-a-week star

Journalist Beren Cross has provided a significant injury update regarding an influential Leeds United player, ahead of their Premier League clash with Burnley.

Farke expecting "tight" Burnley-Leeds clash

The Whites head to Turf Moor on Saturday afternoon knowing that the result could ultimately prove key in the relegation battle come May.

Speaking to the media ahead of the weekend action, Leeds manager Daniel Farke said he is expecting a “tight” battle away to the Clarets.

“I want to be there with a good performance. So, again, Burnley, what they have done in the last season is fantastic. Also a good start, especially performance-wise, to the season and I expect a pretty, pretty tight and competitive game. Out of these four games until the next international break, we want again to win as many points as possible.

“I would judge it as a difficult period because we have three away games, just one home game and we take it step by step. So right now we are just focused and concentrated on this Burnley game and to give ourselves a chance with a top performance again to win points.”

Farke will want as many players fit as possible for Saturday’s game, and it looks as though he could have a key man back in the fold, following a new update from Thorp Arch.

Farke could unleash Leeds' best English talent since Rio Ferdinand

Leeds fans can get excited about another rising English starlet at Elland Road.

1 ByJoe Nuttall Oct 17, 2025 Stunning Leeds injury update shared

Writing on X, Cross claimed that Leeds winger Dan James is making “immense progress” in his injury recovery and “would befive weeks ahead of schedule” if he features against Burnley. Farke said in his pre-match press conference that there is a chance he makes the squad at Turf Moor.

“Very positive and good news was Daniel James because he is a bit ahead of schedule in his rehab, so a compliment also to our medical department, our rehab coaches. He was even involved already, I would say, in major parts of team training during this week but he is definitely not in contention for the starting line-up.”

Having James back would feel like a massive shot in the arm for Leeds, with one of their record signings such an important figure with his blistering pace and improved end product, even though he is still searching for his first Premier League goal of the season.
