Kishan's 'continued braveness to take the game on' impresses Moody

“I think we’ll always be aggressive and always be positive but we’ll always try to be smart as well,” says assistant coach Simon Helmot of SRH’s batting approach

ESPNcricinfo staff24-May-20251:19

Moody: Kishan has made it clear he’ll be retained

Ishan Kishan scored 106 not out off 47 balls in the second match of IPL 2025. In the latest, his 12th innings, he scored 94 not out in 48 balls against Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB). Take out those 200 runs, and you’re left with 125 in ten innings. One of the many reasons Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) weren’t the force they were last season was Kishan’s lack of runs through the best part of the IPL – “that certainly impacted the SRH performance,” as Anil Kumble said.Kishan wasn’t the only one, of course. Travis Head couldn’t replicate his heroics from 2024. Heinrich Klaasen was patchy. Abhishek Sharma held his own. But Kishan, the new face in the top few for SRH this year, showed in those two innings what could have been for SRH.”I think that if your opening partnership, which was so effective last year, between Travis Head and Abhishek Sharma – Abhishek has played well this season but Head hasn’t been able to do it – then your No. 3 has a huge responsibility,” Kumble said on ESPNcricinfo’s Time Out. “His start to the season was great, but after that he was not in form. That certainly impacted the SRH performance.Related

RCB need their share of luck now to find lost momentum

Kishan, SRH quicks dent RCB's chances of a top-two finish

“Not to forget that Klaasen couldn’t do what was expected of him either. Nitish [Kumar] Reddy too. Aniket [Verma] played well, but if your main batters are not in form, maybe when you don’t qualify for the playoffs you think about all these things.”It was the poor run through April that really spoilt it for Kishan. Most recently, while he has scored 44 and 35, those have taken him 34 and 28 balls respectively. Well below what he is capable of. Till he found his mojo again on Friday. “Ishan Kishan played a very mature innings; he certainly held the innings together for us,” SRH assistant coach Simon Helmot said at the press conference after the game.”He was under a lot of pressure going into this game,” Tom Moody said of Kishan. “He would have felt the fact that he has had a poor season even though he started very well. We were talking about that and you can guarantee [that] around the franchise, they were probably talking about it: do we keep him, do we retain him, what do we do, how do we go about it…”I think he’s made it very clear today that he is being retained, if there was any doubt. The composure stood out to me. And just his continued braveness to take the game on. Obviously helped because it was happening at the other end as well.”3:20

SRH season review: Shami could feel the heat, Aniket Verma the bright spark

In what has been a disappointing season for SRH with one match to go, their last two games is cause for optimism. Before scoring 231 for 6 in the win over RCB on Friday, they had scored 206 for 4 in 18.2 overs to overhaul Lucknow Super Giants’ total.”The last two matches, our batting performance has been very solid, we’ve achieved large scores, match-winning scores,” Helmot said. “Obviously, our batters assessed the wicket [on Friday] and we felt it was a very nice wicket to bat on and a large score was going to be required. So, we maintained that aggressive approach but it was still important to have a batter in at the very end to ensure that we could capitalise on those last few overs. So, I think as a batting unit, we maintained the course.”I think we’ll always be aggressive and always be positive but we’ll always try to be smart as well and understand that not all surfaces play the same way. And so, a score of 170 or 180 might be a match-winning score [in some places]. So, we’ve never sought to try and make over 200 every innings but if we believe that the surface is good enough and our batters can get some partnerships together, then you can get those match-winning scores.”

Price 2.0: Mason must unleash West Brom star who has “energy in abundance"

After falling short of the playoff positions in the Championship last season, West Bromwich Albion made a daring call in appointing rookie boss Ryan Mason as their next manager this summer.

The bold appointment looks to be paying off already, when assessing the Baggies’ fast start out of the blocks, with the West Midlands outfit already occupying second spot in the challenging division after picking up three wins and a draw from their opening four clashes.

Mason has one breakout figure in his Baggies camp to particularly thank for the second-tier side’s unbeaten start, with Isaac Price sticking out as a top performer in Championship action, away from also being a goalscoring hero for his nation.

Price's blistering form this season

The former Tottenham Hotspur coach turned West Brom manager must be further commended for his new side’s electric start when you consider regular first-team faces such as Tom Fellows deserted the Hawthorns so late into the hectic window.

Thankfully, the 34-year-old has Isaac Price at his disposal to soften the blow of Fellows’ departure, with the former Everton youngster proving to be a real hit with the West Brom faithful so early into his stay back in England.

Indeed, the 21-year-old midfielder already has three strikes and two assists next to his name for the promotion hopefuls this season from just five clashes, with the West Brom number 21 also ripping it up for Northern Ireland recently to keep up his whirlwind run of form, having scored against Julian Nagelsmann’s Germany during the break.

This will all rest now on Price being able to keep up this blistering form when the games continue to come thick and fast, with four of the Baggies’ six Championship strikes to date relying on the magic of their £2.5m ace.

Mason will want to unearth more lively performers, such as Price, to make his team an even harder prospect to beat, with this raw Baggies starlet perhaps in line for more starting opportunities subsequently.

The West Brom youngster who could be the next Price

After all, Mason’s expertise when still situated at Spurs centred on his ability to work with youngsters closely and advance their game.

This could well have been a pulling factor as to why Toby Collyer decided to move to the Hawthorns on loan from Manchester United this summer, having already made considerable waves in the first team picture at Old Trafford.

Collyer has very much shown Ruben Amorim back in Manchester that age is just a number when unleashed into senior action, with this vital off-the-line clearance just one standout moment from his 13 first-team starts and counting for the Red Devils.

Price, who is the same age as the United midfielder, has also shown Mason why having youthful energy on his side can be impactful, with the England U20 international now searching for regular first-team minutes in the Championship to further his game even more.

Despite having nothing concrete to really show for his limited United first team chances, with zero goals or assists picked up, Collyer has still impressed with his fight and vigour from his minimal minutes in the senior picture, with 2.8 ball recoveries averaged and 3.3 duels won on average last season in the Premier League leading to analyst H hailing him as possessing “energy in abundance”.

He could well liven up the midfield ranks even more at the Hawthorns, therefore, away from just the emerging star of Price, with Collyer ensuring a 1-0 away win at Stoke City was secured last time out by winning a solitary ground duel, despite only being on the pitch for 11 minutes.

It might well be deemed unrealistic to expect him to break into the first-team picture ahead of the likes of West Brom midfield stalwarts Jayson Molumby and Alex Mowatt, but Mason could well catch Derby County off-guard up next by throwing in his new number 13 from the start, knowing the Rams are more of a well-drilled unit who rely on seasoned heads, over rising talents.

As a result, Collyer’s youthful exuberance might well catch John Eustace’s Rams cold.

The Red Devils youth product will have to be patient, however, with Mason knowing all too well that he will need his full squad – from Price to Collyer – to seal a dramatic return to the top-flight.

Sold for £6.7m: Spurs must regret selling star who's outscoring Kolo Muani

Tottenham Hotspur love a deadline day signing under Daniel Levy and, well, they’ve made another one.

On Monday, Spurs completed the signing of striker Randal Kolo Muani, arriving on a season-long loan from Paris Saint-Germain, costing a €5m (around £4.3m) loan fee, with no option or obligation to buy included.

This certainly gives Thomas Frank plenty of choice when it comes to his centre-forward position, with Richarlison having started all four matches in that position so far, including the UEFA Super Cup, bagging a brace on the opening day of the Premier League season against Burnley.

That’s not to mention Dominic Solanke, who joined Spurs as recently as last summer for £65m, but has seen just 49 minutes of action so far this season, spread across three substitute appearances, although he remains a contender for serious minutes.

However, will Tottenham still rue selling one of the highest-scoring players in Europe since the start of last season, one that could have flourished in North London had he not moved on?

What Randal Kolo Muani will bring to Tottenham

Tottenham will become the fifth club Kolo Muani has represented in just six seasons, searching for a more permanent home.

His major breakthrough came at Nantes, scoring 12 Ligue goals in 2021/22 for the Canaries, earning a move to Eintracht Frankfurt, who snapped him up as a free agent.

Well, one season and 23 goals later, Kolo Muani joined Paris Saint-Germain in a deal worth, potentially, as much as £78m on deadline day of 2023, but this has not proved to be a shrewd investment from les Rouge-et-Bleu.

Never truly in Luis Enrique’s plans, the Frenchman scored just 11 goals in 54 PSG appearances, spending the second half of last season out on loan at Juventus, for whom he bagged a more than respectable ten goals in 22 outings, eight of which came in Serie A. He most recently scored a brace against Al Ain during the Club World Cup.

Now though, having scored goals in Ligue 1, the Bundesliga and Serie A, he’ll be looking to add the Premier League to this list, hoping to make his Tottenham debut against West Ham after the international break.

Well, perhaps Spurs would never have needed to sign Kolo Muani, had they not sold one of their best academy products of recent times.

Ex-Tottenham striker free-scoring in Europe

Having scored 17 goals in 15 appearances for the U18s, as well as nine goals in nine UEFA Youth League outings, there was plenty of excitement from within the Tottenham fan base about Troy Parrott, even before his senior debut in September 2019.

Nevertheless, despite being free-scoring at youth level, the Irishman made just four senior Spurs appearances, loaned out to Millwall, Ipswich, Milton Keynes and Preston, before exploding in the Netherlands.

During the 2023/24 season, on loan at Excelsior, Parrott scored a total of 17 Eredivisie goals, averaging a goal every 127 minutes, made all the more impressive by the fact that his team finished third-bottom, subsequently netting seven times during the play-offs, including four in the final, but this was in vain as the Rotterdam-based side were relegated, defeated 7-6 on aggregate by NAC Breda.

This though, caught the attention of bigger Dutch clubs, including AZ Alkmaar, who agreed to pay €8m (around £6.7m) to sign him permanently from Tottenham last summer.

Well, the Cheeseheads are certainly glad they made this decision, given that the Republic of Ireland international scored 20 goals last season, four of which came in the Europa League, on target against Elfsborg, Ferencváros, Galatasaray and Roma.

Well, Parrott has started this season absolutely on fire, netting ten times already, including seven in five Conference League qualifying outings, as well as a brace on the opening day of the Eredivisie season against Groningen.

The table below documents how prolific he has been since joining AZ.

As the table documents, Parrott is keeping quite illustrious company when it comes to players who’ve scored 30 or more goals across all competitions since the start of last season, with the Irishman skyrocketing up that leaderboard following his exploits last month.

For comparison, Kolo Muani has scored 12 goals during the same timeframe.

Troy Parrott scores for Ireland

Former Tottenham midfielder Rafael van der Vaart has certainly been impressed by Parrott’s form in the Eredivisie, labelling him a “striker who actually has everything”, impressed by his “killer instinct” in front of goal.

Thus, the Republic of Ireland international could prove to be the one that got away for Spurs fans, even if they’ll be pleased to see him thriving over in the Netherlands.

Perfect for Bruno & Mbeumo: Man Utd to make bid for £20m star this week

Manchester United star Bruno Fernandes has been a player who has thrived at Old Trafford over recent years, undoubtedly being the shining light in the first team squad.

The Portuguese international managed to register 37 combined goals and assists in the 2024/25 campaign, by far and away the highest tally in Ruben Amorim’s side.

Since his arrival back in January of 2020, the 30-year-old has notched 98 goals and 83 assists, averaging a contribution every 1.15 games he’s featured in – a simply staggering feat for a midfielder.

However, there’s only so much the former Sporting CP talent can do alone, desperately needing added reinforcements if the side are to rise up the Premier League table next campaign.

Work is already underway behind the scenes, as evidenced by the addition of Matheus Cunha, but further signings are expected between now and the end of the transfer window.

The latest on United’s hunt for new signings this summer

Over the last couple of days, midfielder Douglas Luiz has reemerged as a potential addition, with a move away from Juventus expected after starting three league games last season.

He’s not the only Juventus star on their radar, with striker Dušan Vlahović also a player in their sights, with the Serbian available at a cut-price of just £15m this summer.

Juventus' Dusan Vlahovic

However, work has also been done elsewhere, resulting in progress being made on a deal to secure Valencia midfielder Javi Guerra, according to one Spanish outlet.

They claim that the Red Devils are set to make a bid for the Spanish U21 this week, after he made 36 LaLiga appearances throughout the 2024/25 campaign.

It also states that the 22-year-old could be available for as little as £20m this summer, but numerous sides such as AC Milan are also in the race for his signature.

Why United’s £20m target could be perfect for Bruno & Mbeumo

After Cunha’s subsequent transfer to join United, fellow Premier League attacker Bryan Mbeumo has been a player hugely linked with a move to Old Trafford.

Brentford's Bryan Mbeumo celebrates after the match

The 25-year-old has been the subject of two separate offers from Amorim’s side this window, but no agreement has yet been reached for the Cameroonian’s signature.

Mbeumo has already stated his desire to join the Red Devils, but no deal can progress if a fee isn’t agreed with Keith Andrews’ side, who are demanding a package totalling £65m.

However, his tally of 20 league goals last season showcases the threat he possesses within the final third, undoubtedly handing Amorim the talent he needs within attacking areas.

Should he complete any move, a deal for Guerra would also aid the forward, whilst also being perfect for Bruno and bolstering the ranks at the Theatre of Dreams.

The Spaniard’s arrival would allow the club captain to operate in his more natural number 10 role, having more of an impact in such a position as seen by his tallies from 2024/25.

He also has the tools to provide Mbeumo with the tools to thrive, as seen by his tally of 4.8 progressive passes and 4.2 passes into the final third per 90.

Guerra, who’s been labelled “phenomenal” by journalist Zach Lowy, also attempted 2.7 take-ons per 90, along with 1.5 carries into the final third – showcasing his ability to get the ball into the opposition’s defensive third.

Out of possession, the youngster had also won 1.7 tackles per 90, winning 46% of the tackles he entered, having the ball-winning capability that the heart of the side has been lacking in recent months.

The £20m fee touted for the LaLiga star would be an excellent piece of business, having the potential to build on his early success in the professional game, given his tender age.

Should he carry his skillset over to England, he would be a phenomenal signing, having the ability to allow Bruno and fellow pending addition Mbeumo to thrive in the process.

Derby boss John Eustace wants to reunite with "real leader" at Pride Park

Derby County are on the lookout for additions after escaping relegation last term and John Eustace could now be set to swoop for a star he has previously worked with, according to a recent report.

Derby County make strong start to the summer window

There is plenty of excitement at Pride Park ahead of the new season, and a common theme has emerged within the Rams’ summer recruitment that may paint an intriguing picture.

Andreas Weimann and Danny Batth have both arrived from Blackburn. Richard O’Donnell, alongside Carlton Morris, come in from Blackpool and Luton Town, respectively.

John Eustace took over at Derby from Rovers in a surprise turn of events earlier this year, and new signing Batth has pointed out why the Rams boss is the man he wanted to work for, above all.

He explained: “We have got a good relationship. We speak about football and get on well generally. I like the way the manager works with his team and obviously I know what I am getting into coming here.

“I am sure he will be really pushing forward with the team this season, and to be a part of that is a great privilege.”

Offer submitted: Derby make £5m+ bid to sign "great" new player for Eustace

He wants to join the Rams.

2 ByBrett Worthington Jul 2, 2025

Determined to keep building on what has been an encouraging start to the window, Derby are in talks to sign free agent midfielder John Swift and he has already met Eustace amid rumours that he could be set for Pride Park.

Three other clubs in the EFL will provide competition for his signature, but there can be no doubt that the Rams are on the right track when profiling where to add fresh blood. Now, Eustace could be set to repeat his trick of raiding Blackburn for new additions by reuniting with a star he rates highly from his time in Lancashire.

Derby plotting move for Callum Brittain

According to Football Insider, Derby are plotting a move for Blackburn full-back Callum Brittain amid an impasse in talks over a new deal for the 27-year-old at Ewood Park.

Eustace is said to be a huge fan of the defender and previously labelled him “one of the best full-backs in the league” alongside talking up his qualities as a ‘real leader’ on and off the pitch.

Enjoying a productive time of things last term, Brittain registered two goals and five assists in 35 appearances across all competitions, predominantly featuring on the right-hand side of their backline.

However, he is also capable of featuring further up the flank when needed. He may be set for a new challenge under a familiar face if reports are to materialise into something more concrete.

Derby avoided relegation by a solitary point in 2024/25 and seem determined to avoid a similar fate this time around. Their pursuit of Brittain could be a statement of intent on that front.

Sky Sports: Newcastle in talks to sign "world-class" £30m star Howe loves

After announcing the arrival of Antonio Cordero, Newcastle United have now reportedly entered talks to sign a long-term target who Eddie Howe loves in a deal worth £30m.

Newcastle announce Cordero arrival

Having spent the last two windows watching other clubs spend big and welcome key additions courtesy of their PSR concerns, Newcastle and PIF wasted no time before getting their business started this time around. Securing the addition of Cordero, the young Spanish winger will arrive at the end of his Malaga contract on July 1.

Welcoming Cordero to the club in what could be one of his final acts at the club, departing sporting director Paul Mitchell said: “Antonio is an exciting talent. We’re delighted to bring him to Newcastle United amidst interest in Spain and across Europe. He has lots of potential, and the next phase of his development will be for the club to select a loan move that will challenge him and build on his experiences.”

PIF are not done there though. In search of a winger instead of Bryan Mbeumo, who could soon be on his way to Manchester United, the Magpies have been linked with moves for the likes of Anthony Elanga as well as Brighton forward Joao Pedro.

Anthony Elanga in action for Sweden.

Elanga is a name that was mentioned last summer before Newcastle were ultimately unable to make their move. One year on, however, they’ve got the necessary breathing room to spend and have reportedly already enquired about a potential deal to sign the Nottingham Forest star.

The Swede isn’t the only target that Newcastle could revisit this summer, either. Making up for last summer’s disappointment, those at St James’ Park are now “in talks” to sign a long-term target who Howe loves, according to reports.

Newcastle "in talks" to sign £30m Trafford

According to Sky Sports, Newcastle are now “in talks” to sign James Trafford from Burnley, who value their shot-stopper at just £30m this summer. The England international is a player that Howe has had ‘long-term admiration and interest in’ and wants Trafford to compete with current No.1 Nick Pope next season.

The latter has struggled on the injury front over the last 12 months and the addition of Trafford could see his place come under threat.

Newcastle’s interest in Trafford is, of course, far from new. The Tyneside club even agreed personal terms with the goalkeeper last summer before failing to negotiate a deal with Burnley.

One year on, whether that agreement remains in place or Newcastle are forced back into negotiations will be interesting to see, especially if Trafford’s stance has changed.
