Gregg Evans offers Grealish injury latest

Jack Grealish was withdrawn from Aston Villa training on Saturday ahead of their clash with Fulham, The Athletic’s Gregg Evans has revealed.

The playmaker looked set to return to the matchday squad after rejoining his team-mates on the grass, but Villa’s medical staff apparently deemed it too great a risk to let him play. The club won’t simply let the 25-year-old play through the pain, as there is a real danger that he could then aggravate his shin injury.

Villa were victorious without their captain over the weekend, with Trezeguet (twice) and Ollie Watkins on target as they came from behind to beat Scott Parker’s side. However, Evans noted that Grealish’s absence has now extended well beyond the month which was initially expected and there is understandable concern about how much further that will extend.

The 25-year-old has scored seven goals and provided a team-high 10 assists this season (via BBC Sport).

Dean Smith is now refusing to put a timeline on his return, with the severity of the recent setback unclear. For now, there’s ‘no indication’ of his season resuming ‘any time soon’.

Transfer Tavern verdict

Villa had enough to beat relegation-threatened Fulham at the weekend, but now they face a daunting run of fixtures.

They travel to Liverpool next Saturday before hosting runaway league leaders Manchester City. Meetings with Everton and Manchester United then come after a local derby against West Brom.

If Grealish’s fitness struggles continue, they could slowly slide down the table and out of European contention unless his team-mates step up to fill the scoring and creative void his absence presents.

In other news, many Villa fans hailed this midfielder’s display on Sunday.

Seriedade!

– Vínhamos fazendo grandes jogos, jogamos bem contra o Inter, controlamos contra o Coritiba, estamos tomando gols bestas.

Vou me soltando aos poucos. Se precisar, posso fazer esse papel.

West Ham eyeing Toney

According to a report by the Daily Star, West Ham United have Brentford striker Ivan Toney on their radar and potential list of strikers for the summer – supporting ExWHUemployee’s recent claim that GSB are in fact keeping tabs.

Toney, who has enjoyed a prolific season in the Championship, is reportedly being eyed alongside the likes of Eddie Nketiah and Tammy Abraham – coming after West Ham failed to sign a striker in the January transfer window.

Toney eyed by West Ham and GSB

David Moyes managed to secure Jesse Lingard on loan from Manchester United but little progress was made in terms of finding a replacement for Sebastien Haller, who departed for Ajax at the beginning of the window.

Now, the Daily Star have supported ExWHUemployee’s recent claim that West Ham are keeping tabs on Toney and have him on their radar – with Nketiah and Abraham also touted as forward’s GSB hold an interest in.

The 24-year-old has come on leaps and bounds for Brentford, evidenced by his 25 league goals – six more than second place in the Golden Boot race (before tonight’s Championship action, BBC).

Transfer Tavern take

Football Insider pundit Gabriel Agbonlahor recently urged West Ham to get a deal done for Toney. He claimed that the striker would ‘100%’ be a ‘great signing’ for the Hammers, going as far as to say Toney could even usurp Michail Antonio’s place in the starting eleven and give him some much needed competition (Football Insider).

West Ham appear to lack options in the forward department, but only time will tell whether GSB will make a more concrete move in the summer for Brentford’s rising star.

Villa confirm Martinez fitness before Blades

After taking home all three points against Leeds United, Aston Villa are back in Premier League action as they take on Sheffield United at Bramall Lane on Wednesday evening.

Dean Smith’s side secured a huge win against fellow top-six chasing contenders Leeds thanks to a goal from Anwar El Ghazi, and will be confident of securing back-to-back triumphs when they face the top-flight’s bottom club tonight.

One major injury concern for Smith was the fitness of goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez, who appeared to be struggling with a groin problem during the game against the Whites at the weekend.

Now, The Athletic’s Gregg Evans has confirmed that Martinez will be fit for the clash against the Blades tonight, revealing: “The goalkeeper is fit for the game despite a problem with his groin in the 1-0 win over Leeds United at the weekend.

“Martinez had to take painkillers to get him through the last outing and also called on his centre-halves to take the goal-kicks. Smith confirmed this morning that he will play at Bramall Lane.”

News of Martinez’s availability will be of a major relief for Smith, with the Argentine shot-stopper playing a crucial role in Villa’s rise up the table this season – his tally of 13 clean sheets in the Premier League is only bettered by Manchester City’s Ederson.

The £16.2m-rated gem has been a transfer revelation for Villa since joining from fellow Premier League side Arsenal, so having their number one shot-stopper all ready to go for today’s game against the Blades will surely have Smith buzzing.

Meanwhile, Villa are eyeing a summer move for this “talismanic” striker…

West Ham target Frankfurt’s Andre Silva

David Moyes can end his West Ham United striker woes by signing Eintracht Frankfurt ace Andre Silva to fill the void left by Sebastien Haller.

What’s the word?

According to the Daily Mail, Silva has emerged as a potential target for the London Stadium natives after Moyes made clear his intentions to reinvest the £20m made from Haller’s exit.

AFC Bournemouth’s Joshua King also remains high on the former Manchester United boss’ shortlist, which features a string of options including Cagliari’s Giovanni Simeone and Stade de Reims’ Boulaye Dia.

But Moyes is loath to pay over the odds to solve his attacking situation, with Reims expected to demand no less than £15m for Dia while the Irons are touted to offer £16m for King, who will be a free agent at the end of the season.

Silva is under contract at the Deutsche Bank Park through to the summer of 2023 on €50,000-per-week (£44.5k-p/w) terms, after joining Eintracht Frankfurt permanently from AC Milan in the last transfer window for just €9m (£8m).

The 25-year-old had set Milan back €38m (£34m) when signed from Porto in 2017 but never lived up to his price tag at the San Siro, scoring just 10 goals in 41 games. Yet he rediscovered his touch in front of the net with Frankfurt last season, striking 16 times in 37 matches during an initial year-long loan deal.

Silva has continued to thrive in Germany since completing his bargain move to Adi Hutter’s side, with his brace at DSC Arminia Bielefeld on Saturday moving his tally for the term to 15 goals in 19 outings, plus five assists, across all competitions.

The dream solution?

Moyes could find his and West Ham’s dream striker solution with a move to acquire Silva in the January transfer window, but will be expected to face serious reluctance to sell with the £25m-rated attacker proving to be a pivotal weapon in Hutter’s arsenal.

Silva has scored at least one goal in more than half of his Bundesliga outings thus far this season, and has only sat out one German top-flight fixture as a result of an injury when a muscular problem prevented his involvement in December’s 2-1 defeat to VfL Wolfsburg.

That loss has proved to be Frankfurt’s only defeat in their last 13 league games after beating Armenia 5-1 on Saturday, with Die Adler proving to be strong contenders for Champions League qualification.

Silva is neither under or overperforming at present, too, with the 37-cap Portugal international – once lauded by Cristiano Ronaldo for his “phenomenal” record – scoring on par with his expected goals record, per FBref.

He is additionally not afraid to switch play, constantly harries opponents, uses any part of his body to control the ball and is rarely caught offside.

Michail Antonio’s high workrate was considered to be a key factor in why he was relentlessly favoured over Haller since Moyes’ return to east London, with the Ivory Coast international not believed to have shown the same determination to make a difference – something that would not be said of Silva.

Spurs handed Eriksen transfer blow

Tottenham Hotspur look to have been handed a big transfer blow in their hopes of re-signing Christian Eriksen this month after Inter manager Antonio Conte confirmed that the Danish international would not depart during the current transfer window.

Spurs have been linked with the £31.5 million-rated attacking-midfielder in recent weeks with Gazzetta dello Sport reporting they could look to bring him back if they decided to offload Dele Alli, as he has struggled for game time since signing for Inter in January 2020.

The former Ajax man spent six and a half years with the North London club between 2013 and 2020, in which time he would contribute an impressive 69 goals and 89 assists in 305 appearances.

His time in Italy has not exactly gone to plan, with just five goals and three assists for I Nerazzurri, so it was no surprise to see him being linked with a return to Jose Mourinho’s side, especially with the current rumours surrounding fellow attacking-midfielder Dele Alli and his potential move to PSG.

However, a move for Eriksen now appears to be off the table for Spurs, after Conte discussed the 28-year-old following his late winning goal in the Coppa Italia win against AC Milan earlier this week.

He said:

“I’ve been repeating for a month how it is at Inter: no one comes and no one leaves. I’ve been saying this for a month.

“We’re working tactically with Christian to have an alternative to Brozovic because there is no other playmaker in this squad. He is a very intelligent player; he has quality and he is part of this project. I’m very happy he scored today, I pushed him to shoot because we know what he can do on the ball.

“We all love him in the dressing room because he is a decent person – maybe even a little too much. We’re sticking with him.”

[snack-amp-story url=”https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-spurs-news-and-rumours” title=”Read the latest Spurs news, transfer rumours, injury latest and more!”]

Therefore, from what the former Chelsea manager suggests, Eriksen will be staying with Inter this month as they look to get the best out of him.

This undoubtedly comes as a blow for Mourinho’s side, who have often lacked a creative spark in midfield at times this season, and have drawn far too many games in the top-flight as a result.

Having someone such as Eriksen in the side would have perhaps taken some of the pressure off Harry Kane to be the chief creator in this Spurs side, and allow him to get back to being on the end of crosses into the box.

The Danish midfielder is certainly highly regarded amongst the Spurs squad, with Alli describing him as a “magician on the ball” back in 2019.

Therefore, if Mourinho wants to add a creative midfielder to his side this window, it looks as if they will have to look elsewhere following Conte’s latest quotes on Eriksen.

Celtic must unearth hidden gem in Mikey Johnston as Lennon troubles continue

Celtic are currently on an extremely narrow balance beam as they continue to plod their way through the 2020/21 season. As it stands, the Hoops are nine points behind rivals Rangers, who top the Premiership table with 12 wins, two draws and no registered defeats yet.

Neil Lennon’s side look far from comfortable this term, struggling in both the league and in Europe. They have banked just the one point out of their Europa League group stage and have suffered two losses.

The manager will have a lot on his mind as he looks to make his two games in-hand over Rangers count. But there are a number of worries in his squad, with one being his inconsistent attack.

Lennon must act fast to resurrect Celtic’s form

The Bhoys may be coming off the back of a convincing victory over Motherwell, but the cracks are still very much there for everyone to see. Lennon’s attacking options have been unconvincing as of late, with Odsonne Edouard particularly surprising with his subpar performances since his return from self-isolation.

Leigh Griffiths has been subject to the bench and has made all of his impact as a substitute recently. The only solid option Lennon has is Mohamed Elyounoussi, who bagged a hat-trick against Motherwell last time out. The Southampton loanee’s tally now shoots up to an impressive 10 goals and four assists in 18 appearances this season (via Transfermarkt).

Despite being a left-winger by trade, Lennon has played Elyounoussi up front alongside a strike partner on several occasions this campaign. With Edouard seriously struggling to make an impact, the 49-year-old could opt to drop him and play the Norwegian up top with a new face coming in on the left.

Mikey Johnston has been waiting patiently for his chance with the Celtic first team. He has had some good chances under Lennon, but they have been peppered across the last few seasons. Now could be his chance to fully establish himself in the senior squad. With no margin for error, the manager must be brutal in his decisions and should consider phasing out Edouard and trying something new with Elyounoussi and 21-year-old Johnston.

Chris Sutton lauded the youngster as a “real talent” last December – Johnston went on to bag six goals and six assists in 21 appearances last season.

In other news, Celtic risk losing Kristoffer Ajer at the end of this season unless results change…
