Aston Villa: Fans react as Mbwana Samatta reportedly agrees move to Turkey

Many Aston Villa fans have reacted to a report claiming that striker Mbwana Samatta has agreed terms to join Fenerbahce.

Villa manager Dean Smith saw Keinan Davis, Wesley and Samatta all struggle for consistent form last season and a fresh face has been signed in Ollie Watkins from Brentford.

Despite arriving in January for £9.45m, the 27-year-old’s future with the Claret and Blue now looks bleak, with the Midlands club opting to bring in Watkins, who netted an impressive 26 goals in the Championship last term. The ex-Bees marksman may be expected to spearhead Smith’s attack when Villa’s Premier League campaign gets underway against Sheffield United on Monday evening.

To add to Watkins’ arrival, Villa are also now being linked with Lyon striker Bertrand Traore, with a latest report claiming that a completed deal worth £19m is almost done.

Samatta, who arrived in January for £9.45m, scored just one Premier League goal during the back end of the season and it has now emerged that he could be set for a move to Turkey.

Reacting to the claim which was made by Turkish journalist Ekrem Konur, these Villa fans gave their opinion on the update via Twitter account @villareport:

Tottenham Hotspur: Spurs want to sell Serge Aurier or Juan Foyth to fund transfer for Zeki Celik

Tottenham face competition from Everton for Lille defender Zeki Celik as they consider offloading Juan Foyth.

Their rivalry with the Toffees is becoming the tale of the transfer window, as both clubs competed for former Southampton captain Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, but it seems as though Spurs have won the race to sign Jose Mourinho’s top target this summer.

According to The Telegraph’s Matt Law, as relayed by @TranSPURS, Tottenham are willing to sell either Foyth or Serge Aurier to fund a transfer for the right-back.

The Lilywhites are well aware that they will have to offload players in the summer and both defenders are at the top of the list. Spurs are believed to have held talks with AC Milan to sort out a deal for Aurier, while the 22-year-old Argentine continues to be linked with a move to Leeds United.

Daniel Levy is hoping to raise some cash from their sales to make a move for Celik, who moved to Lille from Turkish side Istanbulspor in 2018.

The 23-year-old right-back has earned rave reviews at the Stade Pierre-Mauroy, becoming Christopher Galtier’s first choice in that position in the process. Les Dogues are demanding £18m for his signature, which should in theory be more than affordable for Spurs.

Mourinho managed to muddle through the majority of last season with Aurier as the club’s only designated right-back, although the 60-cap Ivory Coast international struggled for consistency.

Foyth, who was once considered a prodigy of former boss Mauricio Pochettino, finds himself out of favour with the Argentine’s successor as he has featured just twice for Mourinho since the Portuguese native replaced Pochettino last year.

The Lilywhites are also in the race to sign Norwich City’s Max Aarons but the 14-cap Turkish international could be a better option, as he has played in the Champions League before. Celik is only a couple of years older than Aarons so could become a mainstay in the first team for many years to come.

In comparison, Foyth failed to score or provide a single assist in the Premier League last season, and Spurs should not get in his way if he wants to leave. Celik, who has been described by Duncan Castles as “powerful in defensive duels and a good provider of crosses” could be the perfect replacement for the Argentina international at Tottenham.

Tottenham fans react to Hojbjerg latest

It’s no secret that Tottenham are interested in Southampton midfielder Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg after reports this week stated that the London club are in for the Dane.

With the midfielder entering the final year of his contract, one would imagine that he’d be available for a cut-price fee, but unfortunately for Spurs, it seems as though that’s not the case.

Ralph Hasenhuttl made it abundantly clear with his comments earlier this week that the Saints wouldn’t be letting the former Bayern Munich man go for cheap, and The Times have stated that the south-coast outfit value the midfielder at £35m.

This news has Tottenham fans concerned, partially down to the reputation Daniel Levy has garnered for himself when it comes to being a tough negotiator and refusing to pay over the odds for a player.

The pessimists amongst the fanbase are already blaming Levy for the deal falling through, despite no reports backing up those claims.

You can’t help but feel Levy is being a little hard done by here, fans are already angry with him for not completing a deal that may still yet be done, and even if he does refuse to pay, is that necessarily a bad thing?

Hojbjerg is a good player, but £35m for a player in the final year of their contract is preposterous, especially when they’re not from a top side.

Other’s simply weren’t happy with the valuation, stating that Hojbjerg isn’t worth the £35m that Tottenham are being quoted.

One fan claimed that better players were available at that price point, and with Liverpool being reportedly being asked for just £1m more for Thiago Alcantara, who is a regular for one of Europe’s top sides, you have to say that these fans may have a point.

Charlton: Lee Bowyer ‘understands’ Lyle Taylor’s refusal to play

Lee Bowyer has spoken out about Lyle Taylor’s refusal to play for Charlton again and admits he ‘understands’ the striker’s decision.

After Championship clubs were given their return date of June 20, the Addicks were delivered a blow as three senior players announced they would not be taking part in any of the upcoming fixtures (via talkSPORT).

Taylor, along with David Davis and Chris Solly, has refused to partake in the rest of the 2019/20 season due to a fear of picking up an injury which could hamper his chances of a big summer transfer. All three players will be leaving the club shortly through contract expiries or the end of a loan deal.

Manager Bowyer told Sky Sports that he ‘understands’ Taylor’s decision in particular to withdraw from the squad.

“I went back to Lyle at the weekend and asked him if I could persuade him but it didn’t happen,” the 43-year-old said. “He said that he just couldn’t take the risk. I do understand. He’s got the chance to go and make life-changing money for him and his family.”

The forward has been linked with several clubs ahead of the upcoming new season, including Rangers and fellow Championship side Nottingham Forest.

When Charlton return to action, they have a battle on their hands as they try to pull their way out of the relegation zone. It will prove even harder now without the influence of 11-goal ace Taylor (via Transfermarkt).

Profit Players: David de Gea has more than justified his price tag at Manchester United

This article forms part of our Profit Players feature series, which is where Football Transfer Tavern takes a look at how well a player has fared since being signed or sold, using statistical figures and statements from pundits to prove how good of a deal the club managed to achieve.

After arriving at Old Trafford all the way back in 2011, it is fair to say David de Gea had a lot of expectations on his young shoulders. Nearly nine years later, he has firmly established himself as the number one goalkeeper at Manchester United.

De Gea joined Manchester United from Atletico Madrid for £18.9m on a five-year-deal, teaming up with Sir Alex Ferguson’s side shortly after the Red Devils had won their 12th Premier League title.

His arrival coincided with Edwin van der Sar’s retirement, and the Spaniard had big gloves to fill, as the legendary Dutchman made over 250 appearances for United, saving 135 clean sheets in all competitions.

Almost immediately, De Gea was thrown in at the deep end, as he faced derby rivals Manchester City in the Community Shield. His performance drew criticism from fans and pundits alike, although Fergie’s men went on to win 3-2. He made his league debut in the 2-1 win away to West Bromwich Albion one week later and allowed a Shane Long shot to go past him into the back of the net (The Sun).

The 20-year-old was subsequently dropped for Anders Lindegaard.

However, he didn’t allow this to deter him, and carried out a vigorous training programme to meet the physical demands of the English top flight.

Following a string of four games on the bench, he earned himself a recall to the starting lineup, and demonstrated his full potential in a 3-3 draw with Chelsea.

Evidently, De Gea hasn’t once looked back, as he settled into the role of Ferguson’s first-choice keeper, and it has remained that way ever since, despite the changes in managers over the years.

In total, the Spanish international played in 80 games under the legendary Scotsman, lifting the Premier League trophy in his final season in charge.

During David Moyes’ infamous time at the Theatre of Dreams, it can be said De Gea single-handedly saved his job more often than not, and he was named Manchester United’s Player of the Year in recognition of his incredible efforts. He went on to earn this award for the next couple of seasons in a row.

Indeed, the shot stopper has consistently produced match-winning performances when the Red Devils have needed him the most, and his displays between the sticks attracted attention from La Liga giants Real Madrid in 2015.

The transfer saga overshadowed the entire summer that year, but he ended up staying at Old Trafford, and, ever the consummate professional, he returned to his posts.

Instead of turning his back on the club, De Gea helped Louis van Gaal’s side win the FA Cup in 2016, before picking up the League Cup and Europa League title under the Dutchman’s replacement, Jose Mourinho (Transfermarkt).

As a result of these heroics over the years, his market value dramatically rose from £16.2m in August 2014 to £63m by December 2018. Admittedly, this has now dropped to £36m, although this can be attributed to the economic uncertainty surrounding pandemic, and is still double the original fee the board paid Los Rojiblancos (Transfermarkt).

The 29-year-old has made 304 appearances in the Premier League so far, keeping 108 clean sheets, making a staggering 848 saves, taking 180 high claims, and successfully completing 84 sweeper clearances.

Despite his long spell with United, the veteran has only made 13 errors leading to goals, whereas former Arsenal and Chelsea keeper Petr Cech racked up 24 errors in total. His loyal service to the club has been rewarded with another contract extension which is set to expire in June 2023.

All things considered, De Gea has more than justified his price tag, as he has continued to help the Red Devils add to their impressive collection of silverware, and been recognised with a number of awards up until now.

Fans laud Leicester’s Ricardo Pereira for his Portugal performance

Ricardo Pereira has been in fine form this season and if he continues to play as he did against Luxembourg then he could cement his place in the Portugal squad for Euro 2020.

He has fierce competition for a place from Joao Cancelo and Nelson Semedo, but he has won his place on merit and many supporters were left impressed by his display on Sunday.

Only two Premier League players have averaged more tackles per game this season than the right-back, but Pereira has also made two successful dribbles per game and has two goals overall.

That shows how adept he is in both attack and defence, and is worthy of the praise that has been lavished upon him.

Some supporters thought he was the best player on the pitch against Luxembourg, and has therefore justified his selection choice after biding his time for regular involvement in the national team, having first played for Portugal 2015.

Here is how some fans have been responding to his impressive display.

Man United fans reacted in surprising way to Phil Jones starting

Phil Jones was named in the starting line-up against Sheffield United for the first time in the Premier League this season, and some fans were encouraged by his inclusion.

He is a player often much maligned and mocked by some supporters, and he has seen his importance to the team decline under Solskjaer, who has added Harry Maguire in the summer and also picked youngster Alex Tuanzabe ahead of him.

However, the Norweigan stated that the England international has been training well this term and showing the right attitude, so he feels he is deserving of a chance to impress.

He also noted his past experience of playing in defence and midfield, and the injury to Scott McToninay means United are light in that area.

Despite fans often being against Jones, some have taken the time to post positive messages in response to him starting, believing that he will prove himself to his manager and the rest of the fanbase.

Here are some of the reactions to the Manchester United team news.

Arsenal fans have taken to Twitter to react after Swiss journalist Marcello Pelizzari gave an interview revealing a lot of information about Granit Xhaka and the midfielder’s next move, stating that, unless there is a dramatic turnaround, the 27-year-old will ‘100%’ leave in January. The Switzerland international – who has won 78 caps for his country – was recently stripped of the captaincy by Unai Emery after an outburst in the 2-2 draw against Crystal Palace, and Pelizzari has revealed a lot about where Xhaka’s next steps could be.

He details that the former Borussia Monchengladbach man has been linked with Newcastle, Borussia Dortmund and Inter Milan, although it is AC Milan where Xhaka could end up given his love of the city and the fact that Ivan Gazidis is employed by the Italian giants.

One supporter said that they were “really happy for him” following the news, whereas another simply said “good riddance”.
