The left-hander’s second 50 came off only 19 balls and there was more stick to come for Glamorgan when Andrew reached an unbeaten 66 from 22 balls. The former Somerset allrounder hit 24 off the final over, including two sixes and two fours, leaving the unfortunate Chris Ashling with figures of none for 80.Worcestershire’s much-improved performance suggested they benefited from a practice session in the middle on Saturday. Although the exercise was curtailed by rain, the top-order batsmen were challenged to replicate different match situations. When it came to the real thing, Moeen seemed to be out of touch, playing and missing regularly before driving his first boundary off the 22nd ball he faced.However, once one shot had gone off the middle of the bat the runs flowed, although it was Solanki who set the quicker pace with five fours and a six in his 51 until he drove Dean Cosker to Tom Maynard at long off. That was the signal for Moeen to crack on with one of the best innings on the ground this season. His hundred arrived from 94 balls and when he hoisted
another catch to Maynard at long on, he had made 121 from 105 deliveries.The wicket went to Nick James, the former Warwickshire spin bowler’s first in the 40-over league this season, and two balls later he had another when Shakib Al Hasan gave the easiest of return chances. Kervezee then went for 37, caught at long on off Cosker, but Andrew waded into the bowling with six fours and five sixes as Worcestershire added 75 off the last five overs.In contrast Glamorgan lost half their side before they had as many runs on the board. Mark Cosgrove was caught at slip in Matt Mason’s eight-over spell of 3 for 38 and acting captain Mark Wallace was top scorer with 29 before falling to Shakib, who picked up 4 for 32.

He had been their coach since early July, but had been functioning in an interim capacity. But having now impressed in the role, Sri Lanka Cricket has given him the full-time job.Under Jayasuriya over the past few months, Sri Lanka won their first bilateral ODI series against India in 27 years, defeated England away in a Test for the first time in 10 years, and more recently whitewashed New Zealand 2-0 in home Tests to give the team an outside chance of qualifying for the World Test Championship final.”The Executive Committee of Sri Lanka Cricket made this decision taking into consideration the team’s good performances in the recent tours against India, England, and New Zealand, where Jayasuriya was in charge as the ‘interim head coach’,” the board statement said.This is Jayasuriya’s first serious foray into coaching. He has said in various interviews that he views his primary role as creating an environment in which players can operate with freedom. Players appear to have been receptive to his methods, with several providing glowing reviews in public.Jayasuriya’s previous involvements with the team, which preceded his two-year-ban under the ICC’s anti-corruption code, had been as chief selector. He had held that position in two separate stints.His first assignment as head coach will be the forthcoming limited-overs matches against West Indies, in Dambulla and Pallekele.

The semi-finals will be held in Mumbai and Kolkata on November 15 and 16.The 45 league matches and the three knockouts will be played in Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Chennai, Delhi, Dharamsala, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Lucknow, Mumbai and Pune over a span of 46 days. The two semi-finals and the final will all have reserve days. There are six day league matches in the tournament, which will start at 10:30 am IST. The long-awaited, and much-delayed, World Cup schedule was finally released by the ICC and BCCI at an event in Mumbai on Tuesday, just 100 days before the start of the tournament. In comparison, the fixtures for the 2019 World Cup in England and Wales and the 2015 World Cup in Australia and New Zealand were released more than 12 months in advance.The format will be the same as it was in 2019, with ten teams playing each other once in the league phase and the top four qualifying for the semi-finals. India qualified for the event as hosts, while Afghanistan, Australia, England, Bangladesh, New Zealand, Pakistan, and South Africa made it by finishing in the top eight of the 2020-2023 World Cup Super League. The remaining two teams will be identified at the ongoing World Cup qualifiers in Zimbabwe, which is being contested by Sri Lanka, West Indies, Ireland, Nepal, Netherlands, Oman, Scotland, UAE, USA and Zimbabwe.Before the tournament begins, the teams will play warm-ups in Hyderabad, Thiruvananthapuram and Guwahati between September 29 and October 3.

Andrew Fidel Fernando09-Sep-2019Pakistan’s hopes for Test cricket to return to the country have suffered a substantial blow, as ten prominent Sri Lanka cricketers have refused to travel to the country for the forthcoming limited-overs tour.By hosting the limited-overs series first, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) had intended to prove to Sri Lanka players and officials that the nation was secure enough to host Test cricket, starting with the teams’ World Test Championship matches, presently scheduled for December. But with Niroshan Dickwella, Kusal Perera, Dhananjaya de Silva, Thisara Perera, Akila Dananjaya, Lasith Malinga, Angelo Mathews, Suranga Lakmal, Dinesh Chandimal and Dimuth Karunaratne all pulling out of the limited-overs tour PCB’s plans have been significantly dented.Even if this tour goes off without a hitch, Sri Lanka’s frontline Test players may remain unconvinced about the December tour. And, if that is the case, Sri Lanka Cricket is almost certain to refuse to play those Tests in Pakistan. While in this case the board is prepared to send a weakened limited-overs side to the country, it is unlikely to do so for Tests that have championship points at stake.SLC had held a meeting on Monday with the players who were part of the preliminary squad for the tour, to inform them about the security arrangements in Pakistan, which the board itself is largely happy with. In fact, a former Sri Lankan Air Force Commander had conveyed his confidence in those arrangements to the players. But the board has ultimately respected the players’ wishes. As far as the PCB is concerned, the tour is on and we look forward to welcoming the Sri Lanka team in Karachi later this month,” a spokesperson said.This is not Sri Lanka’s first trip to Pakistan since the Lahore attack on the Sri Lanka team. In fact, they had played a solitary T20 there in 2017, also with a weakened squad. But Thisara, who captained the Sri Lanka side in that match in Lahore, is this time among the players who have refused to travel. This, however, is understood to largely be because of his commitments at the Caribbean Premier League with the St Lucia Zouks. He did not make the XI for Sri Lanka’s two most recent ODIs, nor their most recent T20 squad, in any case.Of the players currently in the frame for selection, only Suranga Lakmal had been on the team bus that was attacked by gunmen in 2009. Nevertheless, many younger players will have heard of the ordeal from former players, some of whom remain scarred by the experience. Among the arguments this current group of players mounted their refusal on, is that some other team should be the first to resume Tests in Pakistan, rather than another Sri Lanka side.The PCB will be especially disheartened at the development, because they had been the first to send a team to Sri Lanka following this year’s Easter Sunday attacks. There was a time, in the weeks immediately following the bombings, when cricket tours on the island faced an uncertain future. But the PCB had sent its Under-19 team to Sri Lanka for five ODIs only a month after the attacks, which helped demonstrate the improved security situation. Since then, Sri Lanka has hosted Bangladesh and New Zealand at venues around the country.But although SLC had at one stage said it had received “very positive” feedback from the security team it had sent to assess the situation in Pakistan, their players have ultimately made their own decisions. The PCB will hope there is still a chance the limited-overs tour can still be a springboard to hosting Tests at some point in the near future. But the chances of Sri Lanka being that touring Test team have diminished significantly.The limited-overs series, which features three ODIs and three T20Is, is set to run from September 27 to October 9. The ODIs will all be played in Karachi, before Lahore hosts the T20s.

Andrew Miller19-Jun-2018Jonny Bairstow and Alex Hales hailed “another very special day” at Trent Bridge, after capitalising on the pristine batting conditions at their favourite ground for ODI cricket and smashing England’s own record for the highest team total in one-day cricket.After being asked to bat first in the third ODI – on the grounds that Tim Paine, Australia’s captain, didn’t know what would constitute enough runs on what was self-evidently a belter of a pitch – England rampaged to a massive total of 481 for 6, beating by 37 runs the previous record of 444 for 3 that they made here against Pakistan in 2016.And Hales, who top-scored on that occasion with a (then-) England record of 171, was once again the stand-out scorer, with 147 from 92 balls, including a century from 62 deliveries. It was the ideal riposte from a batsman whose place in the side had been under scrutiny, with Ben Stokes expected to dislodge him when he returns from injury against India next month.Asked if he felt excitement or relief at his innings, Hales told Sky Sports: “I’d say a little bit of both, but more excitement. What a ground, we’ve had some great memories here as a team, chasing 380 against New Zealand, and setting another record here as well. A century from Samit Patel helped propel Nottinghamshire into the knockout positions in the north group of the Royal London Cup.Patel scored an unbeaten 103, getting his runs from 104 balls, with 11 fours and two sixes, as Notts defeated Lancashire by seven wickets at Trent Bridge.The 32-year old was joined in an unbroken fourth- wicket stand of 183 by Steven Mullaney which spanned 28.3 overs.Mullaney finished on 77 not out, with four fours and four sixes as Notts chased down a victory target of 261 to win with 24 balls to spare.Earlier, Lancashire scored 260 for 6 after winning the toss and opting to bat first. They lost their way somewhat after a fine opening stand of 98 and were indebted to Haseeb Hameed’s unbeaten 75 to hold the innings together. If there is one venue in the world that could be home from home for Bangladesh, it is the ground they will begin their Super 10s on Wednesday. Kolkatans speak with a different inflection, and a recent trade embargo means Bangladeshi no longer makes it into this city’s eateries, but still, Bangladesh is elementally tied with Bengal; through shared history, struggle and language.It is on this common soil that Mashrafe Mortaza hopes to break ground on the next phase of their World T20 campaign. Dharamsala, where Bangladesh played their group stage, was so cold and wet, he said, it almost felt like Irish conditions. Bangladesh haven’t played in Kolkata for 25 years, but if Mashrafe gets his wish, this game will feel a little like coming home.”I think this is a good opportunity to play in this ground,” he said. “I don’t know if 90,000 people will turn up for tomorrow’s game, but we are excited to be playing here and we want to make it memorable. As a Bengali, I can hope that Kolkata will be behind us.”Even for non-Bengalis, Bangladesh have become an easy team to get behind. Not only Tamim, actually, but all the batsmen are fired up, especially in T20 cricket. In India they can do much better than at home, because the Asia Cup was played on seaming wickets. Tamim and Sabbir are scoring regularly and Soumya is doing it in patches too. I think when the top order does well, the pressure is off the middle order.”If there is a concern in that middle order, it is the relative lack of runs from Mushfiqur Rahim. He has been out in single figures in four of his five most recent outings. Shakib Al Hasan has also been a little quieter than usual with the bat, though he does have a much better string of scores behind him.”I want everyone to perform but in this format, you don’t always get time,” Mashrafe said. “Especially for those batting in the middle order who don’t get time to get settled in the crease. I think Shakib and Mushfiqur are trying their hardest and they have performed regularly in the recent past.”Shakib is an important player for us. He has performed under pressure for the last seven to eight years. We can always bounce off ideas from him about this ground as this is where his IPL franchise Kolkata Knight Riders is based.”

We all know what a class and key player he is, having done it worldwide, and we’re pleased that he took us over the line,” Gayle said. “Being a [former] captain, he knows what the situation requires. Hopefully he can do it again tomorrow, so that we can finish with a high and can celebrate.”Gayle said that despite facing an increasing run-rate, Jamaica were always confident of chasing down Barbados’ 148 so long as they had big-hitters like Russell to come.”Once he [Russell] gets going, it’s going to be difficult to stop him. I don’t know when something like this (a 6-ball 29) will happen again, but I knew that I had the potential for making these whirlwind scores,” he said. “Well done to the guys who set the tone and made my job a bit more comfortable, to just come in and play my natural game.”Looking ahead to Saturday’s final against Guyana, Gayle said that his team would have to be at their very best if they were to prevail against the tournament favourites. “They are the only team to beat us twice and have been playing good all-round cricket. They have the best bowling attack in the competition so it’s going to be tough. But if we bat properly, we have a good chance.”
